TV & Film Scarlett Johansson as the new Motoko Kusanagi?

The Snowiest Owl

Owl-Obsessed and Owl-Blessed
<p>

Word got out that the famous actress Scarlett Johansson will be the new Major Kusanagi in the new Ghost in the Shell live action movie! How will it go? What will it b based upon? Arise or Stand Alone Complex? What will the media think of this actor 'Whitewashing'? I wanna see your thoughts. :3 <img src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=http://www.thereelword.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Ghost-in-the-Shell-movie-Scarlett-Johansson-1024x651.jpg&key=1116eb1f96e9538f1391e96f0af7ee1eb08f618766e3463f0de4166a24e0bee8" class="ipsImage" alt="Ghost-in-the-Shell-movie-Scarlett-Johans" /></p>

lol. i dunno i think she'd be pretty good. whitewashing aside she's played tough action heroines before.
True True, didn't she play as Black Widow in Avengers? Also, I saw that some other guy named Pilou Asbæk will be playing as Batou.

Yep she plays the most badass Russian Spy in the Avengers. So not worried about her managing the Major. I think it would be good for her - although a lot of comic fans will be pissed that she got this and not her own Black Widow movie.

But whatevs. people find all kinds of reasons to be hateful.

I would personally watch the heck out of that. I loved Ghost in the Shell. The movie, the orignial cartoon, even the bits I've seen of the reboot.

Arise is a pretty good series.

Stand Alone Complex is one of my favorite series (love both seasons and Solid State Society), but I'm not looking forward to this movie. The casting decisions are part of it, for sure, but if they're aiming for a full on adaptation sort of like what happened to Edge of Tomorrow then I might see it eventually on blu-ray or Netflix or something.

As it is right now there isn't enough information for me to be super informed about it but what I've read so far just doesn't sound good to me.

SAC was awesome. I love the Tachikoma.

Yeah, I vaguely remember hearing about this.

Look, the more Ghost in The Shell, or really ANY good cyberpunk out in the world, the better. I totes have to watch it now.

Watch the original Stand Alone Complex. It's pretty awesome.

Oh. Yep, that's the one. The newer series named Arise is cool as well, and I love the new Logicoma character. :3

Arise is a series? I thought it was movies? There were like 3 of them, right?

One I didn't see was the very original movie, and "The New Movie" which I just now saw a trailer for (the music in the background alone sold me.)

Hell yeah man. It's a full-blown series. Motoko has a new outfit too, which is a red motorcycle jumpsuit.

Just making sure, those were the ones where her background gets explained and how she came to be who she is?

EDIT: Saw Pain, Whispers, and Tears. But I guess there were two more I missed.

Oooh, that reminds me I still haven't watched all of The Individual Eleven.

EDIT: SAC 2, couldn't remember the name, but remembered what the plot was centered around lol

Maybe. Because SAC 2 explained her past in depth as well too. Turns out Kuze was the boy she met after she got a full prosthetic body.

So I have a lot of conflicted thoughts about this and a lot of it has to do with the sad whitewashing that goes on in Hollywood, but I do think that some of the criticisms fans of the franchise have are similarly problematic (i.e. the idea that the franchise is somehow 'essentially Japanese' and shouldn't be adapted in a Western setting smells a bit like fetishization of The East and Japan ー and also brings up some questions about the right to adapt stories and themes across cultures). I've been talking about it with some of my friends from Japan and while opinions tend to differ as you'd expect, I think overall Japan really wants her to be playing this role. Just having her name, acting record, and fame behind the movie is a huge boon and if it's nearly as successful (economically) as I think it will be, Cool Japan will be benefiting majorly from this.
