backstory
originally not from the town of the wicked, jude was born in jackson, mississippi as an only child, when shortly two years after his birth his biological father passed away due to a mugging incident that occured while he was on his way home after going grocery shopping late at night, ending in a gunshot wound accompanied by a pool of blood. by the time the ambulance had gotten there, it was too late. at the age of five, his mother became pregnant with his half-brother-to-be lowell grover-logan, adoting the last name of a man she remarried on a weekend after meeting him in vegas, though the name change never came through as upon learning about their child-to-be, dean demanded an abortion and became violent when charlotte refused. after finding out that charlotte planned to file for an immediate divorce and move away into a town by the name of graymoor with her brother and sister france and murphy grover, working their own coffin-making business murphy mortuary, he made a brutal attempt on her and it was this that got him sent away into prison and greatly affected their son-to-be.

already socially outcasted for having a hyphenated name, as ridiculous as it may sound, jude moved in to a small home at the edge of graymoor with his aunt, his uncle, his mother and his newborn baby brother lowell, who they would soon learn had a drastic case of autism disorder due to the damage his mother's ex-husband had caused. shortly after lowell was enrolled in primary school, around the time charlotte started looking for a job and financial stability to move out of her siblings home and support her sons, lowell's disabilities became very apparent and it wasn't long before word spread out fast. filthy. child of sin. tainted. infected. diseased. no one would go near lowell, and certainly no one would take charlotte in as an employee. jude, now nine years old, having grown up to be a relatively quiet and withdrawn kid, quickly picked up on the way lowell was treated and the way his family was viewed throughout the town, how people talked about you when you were different. different than they wanted you to be. not eager to stir trouble but having his older brother instinct kick in, jude became extremely protective of his little brother and was quick to snap at anyone who so much as gave lowell a dirty look, which consequentally only caused more trouble and bad rep than there already had been.

thankfully, after a coincidental meeting in the laundromat, jude's mother and sheriff haley turned out to get along surprisingly well, especially on their views of the town and its people. that said, upon mentioning her unemployance, sheriff haley offered charlotte a position at the station as her asssisstant secretary. she happily accepted and took the position at the station.

around the beginning of high school, jude now fourteen and lowell nine, their uncle murphy became very sick and began having serious heart issues. because of this his business with his sister slowly began to deterioate and with no choice but to help his family, along with keeping up with school and tutoring his little brother for hours at a time after school, he took over most of the responsibilities that came with his uncle's shop and assissting his aunt.

jude began to fall asleep during school, he started getting imptatient and irritable with lowell and he couldn't keep up. he was in desperate need for somethng to help him stay awake, anything, and with his undying wish of getting into UPENN, he couldn't afford to let his grades slip. he knew he would never in a million years find anything near a prescription that wasn't praying to jesus, and so he conjured a plan. tracking down his ex step-father dean logan in prison in jackson, digging up all information possible on jury and conviction. after a trip to jackson country prison and a long chat with dean, they had an agreement. dean would contact one of his connections in calmarnock, graymoor's town neighbor, and provide jude with supplements to help him sleep less, and in return when jude got into UPENN he would become a lawyer and have dean discharged. it was win-win for both, and eventually jude would pay off his debts.

of course, all meds whether for good or bad causes, has its side effects, and with jude's extreme abuse of pills, he became a speed freak, popping "study aid" every few hours. although his mother oblivious to the circles under his eyes, sickly frame and restlessness, it didn't take long for his aunt to pick up on his habits and take away all his supplements. at first he resisted, but upon becoming aware of the way he was acting and his decline in his mental state he retreated. withdrawal was nothing short of difficult if not painful, the cravings kicked in soon and despite being sober he still remained awake for inhumane hours at a time. many nights were simply unbearable and the sunlight hurt his eyes, noises were all too loud and left a ringing in his ears. it hurt him. it hurt his family. it hurt his brother. but it was for the best, and due to lack of rehabilitation methods, the grovers had no choice but to deal with it themselves, cross their fingers and hope for the best.

after nearly two years of attempted sobreity and secret trips back to calmarnock eventually found out causing fights upon fights and things he'd say and do which he'd regret were if not for the aftereffect that fogged his memory, jude finally managed to clean himself up and whilst it didn't come close to mending the blurry events he didn't quite remember and thankfully never would, it brought his family back together, even if on a small scale.

another year on, the grovers have buried those three years of jude's life deep, deep underground, for his sake, for theirs, for their reputation, for their business. ever since, everyone in his family has been more.. distant with him. his mother, feeling betrayed for going behind her back to seek aid from the man who nearly killed her, his aunt and uncle after recovery, insisting they were just too busy with work to talk with him not to forget that they had now moved out from their home, visits were rare. all except his brother, who despite having been so mistreated by him in those times of difficulty, still smiled at him and waddled into his room every so now and then to see what he was working on and if he wanted to play a game. he'd never been so appreciative of his brother as he was then, but the truth was -

backstory//
There is nothing special about Barns and his history, as it is just about as unhealthy and traumatizing as anyone's who lives in Graymoor. Barns was born into a sickeningly Christian household, where the only thing that wasn't seen as a sin was washing the dishes and cleaning your room; at least, according to Ezekiel Snowden. A bitter man among the many, however, he was a deacon of the local church. That somehow made him feel powerful, and with that power, he punished his children into the ground. There was none of that 'washing your mouth out with soap' business in the Snowden house-- if you swore or talked back, you'd get a mouth full of drywall. Caught sneaking out? You'd kneel in grits for the amount of time you were gone for. Spoke the Lord's name in vain? Papa would pinch your tongue for as long as he saw fit, and that was usually until the blood started.

Barns was always a defiant child. He was raised properly by his Mama, Lucille Snowden, who was a very kind woman-- but spited his father by behaving like an absolute lunatic. The punishments became a bore after a while, he acquired a taste for plaster and his calloused knees only aided him in more night-outs. Things haven't really changed for Barns and his family, his father is still a miserable old man, his mother is a miserable housewife, and his sister is just plain old miserable. Living in Graymoor teaches you to accept that being totally and completely unhappy is normal, and no amount of medication can help that-- Barns will be the first to say so.

10 what do you think of graymoor? think of your favorite shirt in the world. imagine getting out of a warm shower and stepping into your bedroom feeling motivated and ready to start your day. you get dressed and put on that shirt, then head down the hall to start your productive day. you just finished washing your hair, fixing up your hair, looking for the perfect outfit to match your shirt. you walk outside, and a bird takes a massive shit and it lands right onto your shirt. you turn around to try to go back inside and clean your shirt off, but you locked the door and left your keys inside. you're stuck going about your day with a bird shit stain on your favorite shirt. the stain is small, but it's just noticeably dark enough to ruin your whole outfit and your whole day. i'd say graymoor is both the bird and the stain at the same time.

My best virtue is I always see the good in a person. I forgive easily...maybe too easily. I put myself down a lot to the point I'll take anyone back who wronged me because I still think they're too good for me.

I used to want to have "regular" eyes and all that. But now? I am beautiful in this body and no one can tell me differently. As for my sexuality, I couldn't imagine loving a man even if people think it's wrong.
do you believe in the lord? My sense of religion has been rather altered since my little act of rebellion and secretly becoming a Buddhist which was meant to be a temporary thing but now is what makes me me. I don't like worshipping higher powers but I do like the rules religions have like Buddhism is about the Four Noble Truths and all that. But no, I guess I don't believe in the Lord.
do you think you're going to hell or heaven?
I prefer Nirvana.
why or why don't you go to church?
I go to church so this town doesn't gossip about what nefarious deeds me and my family are doing during the sticky hours in that tiny shack.

Best virtue would be that I'm always trying to be the mama duck of situations. I just want to shield everybody I care for from everything because they don't need all this awfulness aimed at them.
My vice would be that there is a side of me that does get cold and distant and hard towards those who I feel have wronged me. It's like my personal blacklist that I never forget and always feel like I need to act upon.

history
Summer was born in the poorer part of China and was an orphan soon after. Her father was a man who had simply cornered her mother and gotten his way and took off leaving her mother with the burden. Her mother had to leave her work and spent the last few months of the pregnancy in her one room apartment praying for something good to come out of it all.
Summer was premature and nearly died a few days after being conceived but somehow pushed on. However, her mother did not. She died from some complication and there wasn't a big commotion about it. Summer was put up for adoption.
It was just her luck some do good white people decided to swoop in like some kind of Angelina Jolie. The process was long and three year old Summer found herself in America.
The town of graymoor was in uproar when the Lee's came in that following Sunday in their getup and sat in the front row at church. Mrs. Margire nearly had a stroke and her husband had to revive her by using her hat as a fan.
Now, the Lee's were a fairly young couple. Marrissa came from a respectable bunch as well as her husband, Daniel. Everyone remembered their parents influence and had mourned alongside the two at their untimely passing due to a car accident that the two couples had been involved in. They were swimming in money and owned a lot of businesses in town and hosted parties and such. They were always a bit radical, like Marrissa hosting a party that benefitted children in war-torn countries. Those kids were obviously terrorists, why would the people of graymoor help them knowing that information? Regardless, people swarmed in just to get a glimpse at the good life as always. The town put up with the couple's insanity and it seemed they'd have to wade this out too.
Then Ramiel came when Summer turned 6. He was a year younger and as timid as a sheep. He wasn't from another country like Summer but the projects in Chicago. Summer was still a firecracker at that point from her tough days at the orphanage and seemed to always bully the younger boy. Broken Chinese flew from her lips that she didn't even know the meaning to anymore because of her exposure to English. She threw fits when Ramiel was nearby and disrupt everyone.
It was a things that children did and she eventually grew out of it.
The two were both POC's in a small racist, god-fearing town and it seemed to unite them. They'd walk down the street and people would be unnerved. God, how they wanted to spew out names. Farmers gave evil looks, the only thing holding them back from saying anything was that those two children would most likely tell their parents and they'd have something awful happen to them. Money was a fearful weapon unjustly controlled by the two brats.

Years passed and Ramiel stayed in his shell while his sister continued being wild and uncontrollable. She punched boys who were saying mean comments about her eyes and then wrestled them when they tried hitting her back for punching them. Their parents got someone too fly in to give them karate lessons which Summer said was stupid but went along and loved it, while Ramiel hid to avoid doing it.
The two started realizing their attraction for the same gender in high school and Ramiel nearly died when he accepted it and Summer wasn't that suprised since she had always wondered why guys were always so revolting. The two came out to each other at the same time and Ramiel spent the next five minutes telling Summer to stop laughing (gotta finish later)

"i'd be a monarch butterfly. they're beautiful, and elegant, and they spend most of their lives in a cocoon and the rest flying an floaring. the most tragic part is that four weeks into their life, they die. i can't decide if that's a bad thing or not."

"i believe that people have to believe in the lord, to give themselves a sort of purpose, but i don't. i don't think we have a purpose and i think that putting your faith in one entity to redeem your 'soul' is entirely pointless. but if my mother wants to know, then yes. i believe in the good and humble lord."

do you think you're going to hell or heaven?
"if my mother had her way, i'd go straight hell. i don't think that either exist, but if what the bible says is true, i'm most likely going to hell."

why or why don't you go to church?
"my mother is a big part of the catholic community, especially in graymoor. she drags me there every sunday, and if she's feeling particularly cruel, to confession on saturdays. it's something i've always had to participate in whether i like it or not."

"my real opinion is to love who you want to love. life is too short. but what i have to say to other people is that it's gross and unlawful and sinful. mother always says that 'she doesn't hate the people, she hates the act' whatever that means."

"depends on what you mean by evil. i don't think that we are born anything. we learn and we perceive and watch and then we follow. it all depends on who you're following. i am personally following no one. i learned that was a bad habit a long time ago."

"i am kind, i think. i don't like to see people hurt and i do what i can to heal pain. i can't say that i'm perfect, but i can lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. i think that i'm fine tuned with other people's emotions. i can sense sadness and anger and happiness. my worst is probably that i'm stubborn, although i prefer to say independent. i don't like to rely on people. i don't step out of my opinion and i won't be told by anyone how to live my life."

"i think we can be both. i know that my mother can sometimes be a ball of light, in front of her friends and the congregation and the school. but behind closed doors she's a raving maniac. cold and cruel and ugly. i think that only we can truly know ourselves. only i can know what goes on in my head; whether it's light or dark. we can't judge what is light and what is dark. not in this town anyway, we have nothing real to compare ourselves to."

"i don't know. i'd probably run away. i don't want to be involved in a possession! but then again, you can't trust the police to do justice here, so i wouldn't be able to go to them. my mother would probably organise an exorcism, for me and the possessed person. she's always wanted an excuse to get my demons out. i think if i was really scared, i'd go straight to my dad. he's the only guy who could ever calm me down and make sense of something like that."

"i think for a place that wants to promote love, positivity and the freedom of americans, they sure spread a lot of hate and negativity and take away a lot of freedom. i think it's a toy town. we live a lie, and even though everyone knows that it's all one big joke, we still put on our sunday best and walk down to church."

"according to the bible, they could. any sin can be forgiven with repentance. but the problem is, i don't repent. i lie to stay alive. i curse to keep me sane. i play with boys to have fun. my life is not to be regretted and i won't spend it on my bended knee praying for forgiveness."

backstory
scarlette was born in graymoor. she was baptised at six months old. her parents were proud, and thought her to be a miracle child. they hadn't been able to have kids, and so scar was a gift sent from god. at a young age, her mother taught her the importance of the bible, but as scar grew older, she realised the limitations that it would put on her life.

all of scar's friends would be part of groups like the cheer leading squad and the dance team. but lillian halliday would not have her child flaunting her body. instead of making scar want to hide herself, it only made her want to get out there more. it made her feel like her body was something that she could choose to flaunt, in secret. scar began to think of herself as a piece of forbidden territory, and boy did it feel good when she broke the rules.

scar has a slight problem with stealing. she steals everything she thinks that she can get away with. she can steal quarters that fall out of people pockets or necklaces that people set down and forget about. when her mother found her with a pair of her friend's mother's earrings, she was locked in her room for a week. her father would always sneak in an ice cream to cheer her up. he always seemed like the only sane person in the world.

scar seeks the outside world. in a family where she has always been locked up, she had always wanted to see hollywood movies and read magazines and listen to extravagant music. but for scar, all she would get is hymns and bible extracts. her several attempts to run away were foiled even before she got off the doorstep.

at age twelve, scar had her first kiss. she hasn't kissed anyone since then, but she has certainly played the field of men. she teases boys with her eyes, her smile, her looks. she uses herself as a weapon, in a game that she plays. but that's what happens when you trap a kid; they only want to escape more.
