SWEET DAYS
premise
just minutes away from bustling downtown, the ward of nerima city, tokyo, is home to many vibrant characters. despite being having a reputation as a quiet suburb, the neighborhood is more than meets the eye; each resident has their own, compelling story to tell. you might bump into the enigmatic wagashi shop owner, for instance, who somehow always seems to know what her customers need. or you might cross paths with the neighborhood goons, who are more obtuse than their facial hair and six-packs let on.

whatever the case, you are bound to meet someone interesting here. and maybe, just maybe, you'll have an encounter so sweet, you'd never forget its taste.

notes
type: literate, character-driven rp
face claims: real-life only, preferably japanese (can be mixed; if needed your character can be from a different ethnicity) [face claim directory]
genre: romance, slice-of-life, comedy
setting: present-day. nerima city, tokyo, japan. (quiet suburbs, minutes away from downtown.)
status: always accepting applications
extra:
❀ though you can create any sort of character you'd like, please note that romance is what drives this rp. therefore, 'outlier' characters (like an elderly man, child, etc.) may be less fun to play among high schoolers, young adults, and college students. it may be best to make these characters your secondary muses instead.

❀ this rp will be quite casual in terms of plot and planning. there will be no discord group chat; all discussion will be done on the ooc chat (on this website). i've become quite jaded with intricately-planned narratives, so i just want to jump into the story and see where it goes. basically, expect everything to be spontaneous!

rules
↳ all rpn rules apply. (especially about keeping it pg-13!)

↳ with regards to plot, you can drive your own story the way you want. (well... let's save murder and much darker themes for another time.) it's your character, you do what your heart tells you. but don't godmod and redirect others' stories. after all, we're all here to have fun, not dictate!

↳ if you aren't feeling up for the rp anymore, please send me a message before you disappear! even if it's a short hiatus, i do need to know. i'll do the exact same if i'm ever busy/unavailable to play for a period of time.

please try to get your applications in by april 17, tuesday. (not a definite due date; just so we can get this show on the road!)

↳ applications are always open, and you can send in as many character sheets as you'd like. however, i'll be picking which applications to accept (based on grammar/spelling and whether the character matches the narrative), and you can only play the characters i've accepted (if any). i'm not too picky, but please put effort into your cs and do keep it sfw (including all images used).

tips: be creative with your characters. i want originality! the characters can fall into tropes (in fact, i'm a big fan of the cliche), but it can't all be a generic copy of one sort of character.

Mornings at Zenshin Marketing Agency were characterized by the hustle and bustle of office workers of different shapes and sizes, all donned in some variant of professional attire. Across the rows of desks and stiff rolling chairs lay the incredibly noisy fax and copy machines. Paired with the shouts of managers and chatter over work phones, the environment was far from tranquil.

Yet for Yamamoto Fumie, every ring of a phone and brrr of machinery was an invigorating reminder of her position as a Marketing Assistant, and the many years of success that were to come from this stable job. High school and college had been a tumultuous time of exploration and uncertainty, but those days were long gone, now. Every weekday morning, she awoke to the sound of her phone alarm, the warm shower, and the chit-chatter of folk on the Tokyo subway. By nine o'clock sharp, Fumie’s productive work day would begin. It had all become so familiar to her, and blissfully so.

Her work day would only be fulfilling, however, if there was a set of cold beer and snacks waiting for her at home. Even as she flipped through pages and pages of material, her lips moistened at the thought of crispy, squid jerky, complemented by a gulp of the spritzy beverage. It was what got her motivated, what made her focused enough to finish the countless tasks her superiors would thrust on her.

Her dark eyes lit up at the sight of her watch, which flaunted a joyous 3:45. That meant only a little more than an hour until she could clock out, and return to her beloved—albeit littered—apartment room.

“Amamiya, have you already contacted the client?” Fumie craned her neck behind her desktop to speak with a timid-looking coworker. The person who now nodded and fumbled before her to reach for some papers was Amamiya Ran, the office’s petite ray of sunshine. The girl was only interning, but her presence had become undeniable. In fact, at that very moment, Fumie could hear a couple of male office workers whispering (not-so-quietly) by the coffee machine about how “adorable” the girl was when she was concentrating.

It took some energy, but the woman managed to tune out their overexcited murmuring. Her focus was, instead, on the bobbed girl seated across from her, and the papers that were in her hands.

“These are the notes from our meeting. I hope this is okay, Miss Fumie?”

“Ah, this is perfect. Thank you.” the older woman beamed. Then, a pause. “Amamiya, didn’t I tell you to just call me casually? You know I’m just an assistant.”

‘Although, I don’t mind the special treatment.’ she secretly admitted. There was something satisfying about being respected in the workplace. It was almost as if she was two steps closer to her dreams.

With the addition of some final touches, Fumie wrapped up the remainder of her work using the intern’s material, moving briefly from her seat to grab a cup of coffee. The pattering men from earlier were now seated near the machine, continuing their conversation as if the whole office wasn’t listening. Their chatter was barely amusing, and only worsened when it was somehow directed towards the very woman herself.

“Amamiya is super cute, but I think Yamamoto is more my type. I mean, she’s pretty, intelligent, and so put-together!”

Pretty. Intelligent. Put-together. Raising her brow, the woman silently poured herself a cup of coffee.

“Eh? But girls like that are such a turnoff… It’s like, with Amamiya you want to protect her, but with Yamamoto you can’t?” the other man spoke up in an incredibly serious tone.

“What are you talking ‘bout? Classy women are where it’s at!”

“But she’s such a workaholic!”

Slowly but surely, their voices began to raise.

Team Fumie’s spokesperson continued on about how brilliant the woman was. Followed by a retort from Team Ran, and so forth. Amidst their passionate arguing, the coffee machine had already finished its job. It seemed that even the machinery was tired of such nonsense.

Mug in hand, Fumie whirled around to observe the backs of her younger coworkers and see when they would notice her laser stare. That was, until, a comment threw her totally off-guard.

“Not to mention she smells good.”

Choking on a swig of coffee, the woman nearly dropped her mug. Her eyes involuntarily widened, meeting the bewildered stares of the men seated before her. It only took a few seconds for her to regain her composure, and squash her astonishment with a poker face.

Straightening out the ends of her umber hair, Fumie cleared her throat. She placed her free hand on her hip, staring long and hard at the culprits. Nakamura. Suzuki. You better start working and stop gossipping, before I let Boss know what you’ve really been up to.”

That got them in a flushed, panicky mess. They scurried off to whatever post they were supposed to be at, allowing Fumie a few moments to breathe.

‘If only they knew the real me.’

She shuddered at the very thought. They’d really be running, then.

“You were so cool, Miss Fumie!”

A mirthful, melodic voice snapped her out of it. Turning to face an awestruck Ran, Fumie couldn’t help but break into a sheepish smile.

“Guys can be so gross. And oblivious. But you handled them so well!”

Clearing her throat, the older woman nodded. “Well, it was nothing. If any of them bother you, just let me know, okay?”

“Okay!”

[div class=bodytitle] — 5 p.m. [/div]

[ Attention passengers: The next station is Nerima. Doors will open on the right-hand side. ]

Releasing a sigh, Fumie lolled her head on either side, one hand grasping a handle and another attempting to release the tension in her neck. The sides of her feet ached, yearning to wiggle out of the Oxfords that confined them so. Even her shoulder begged for her handbag to be cast aside, the heftiness of it increasing by the minute.

It wasn’t until the train slowed to a smooth stop that a sudden surge of energy brought the woman back to life. Squaring her shoulders, Fumie braced for the rush of people propelling her out of the train and onto the platform.

Her first instinct was to clamber up the stairs and speed down to the apartment complex. And so she did. With an ever-increasing pace, her body automatically lead her past the local school, past the playground, past the convenience store, and past the bakery. It wasn’t until her gaze happened upon Cruisers, Nerima City’s “authentic bar and grill”, that her muscles finally halted.

The enticing aroma of sizzling meat and the sound of glasses clinking was enough to change her plans for the night. After all, it didn’t matter where she was getting it from, all she needed was beer.

“Welcome—Oh, Fumie! Good evening!”

A burly, near forty-year-old man poked his head up from behind the main counter, his features immediately brightening in recognition.

“Evening, Eijiro!” Fumie cheerfully replied, setting her bag down as she took a seat behind the counter. Her gaze wandered first to the man’s obnoxiously dyed hair. It was dark orange with hints of bright blond, was gelled in an outdated fashion, and always managed to make her blink.

Abe Eijiro, the owner of this flamboyant coiffure, went on to ask about her day as he prepared her usual meal. As usual, Fumie reported the day’s events, making sure not to leave out the incident with the two juniors in her company. Her retelling gave the bartender quite the laugh, his resonant voice making Fumie herself break into a grin.

“And here’s your favorite.” he finally remarked, sliding a glittering pint of amber liquid her way. Gluttonously, Fumie snatched the glass and lifted it to her nose, inhaling its fruity scent before pressing it against her mouth. As she swallowed her first gulp of liquid, her entire body relaxed. She was more than ready to chug the entire pint down, but reminded herself that she was in public. Chugging would have to wait until one glass later, when she was almost sure that no one would be trespassing in her private indulgence, and when she was brave enough to take the risk.

No one from work—at least, not that she knew of—lived near her apartment complex, but it wasn’t just her coworkers around whom she’d have to be on guard. It was the loudmouthed children, the elderly, and the shop owners that worried her the most. Perhaps Eijiro was the one shopkeeper Fumie trusted herself most with; he wasn’t the type to mindlessly reveal incidents with his customers to others, even if it happened to pertain to Fumie’s horrid drunkenness. She would certainly never tell him her true nature, but it was safe enough to use drunkenness as an excuse to eat and drink like an ‘old man’, here in his company.

Thus, it didn’t take long for her to get comfortable. One glass and a beef skewer in, Fumie stopped eyeing either side of the restaurant, and started relishing in the delightful mixture of sauces, spices, and beer.

Touma Itsuki
∞ 2:30 PM, Friday
A gentle breeze whisked across the ground, dirt tickling his nose as he tried to inhale deeply. The sun's warm rays peeked through the leaves of a tree he and a group of students had gathered around, their laughter echoing across the grass like music. With his hands in his pockets, Itsuki strolled from person to person and examined their artistic intake of mother nature. He smiled both disapprovingly and approvingly at what he saw.

There were some drawings that were mildly inappropriate while others followed the theme perfectly. The inappropriate one's hinted at typical teenaged topics, like romance and girls. One of the boy's gave a tree trunk the shape of a woman's body which was a normal occurrence, considering everything that same boy drew involved females in some shape or form. He couldn't complain because at least the students were attempting to participate.

Itsuki's eyes fell to his wrist to check the time. The minute hand then struck thirty passed two, meaning school was about to be over and the class eagerly was finishing up their drawings. Because his art class was scheduled towards the end of the day, he was lenient enough to let students out as soon as they finished their assignment to do other school-related things. He also remembered how long it took to clean up his homeroom class back when he was in secondary school, and that always made him frustratingly late for club activities. A lot of the other staff members disliked his methods, but if the main art teacher didn't mind, why should he? It wasn't like he was going to be a teacher's assistant for long anyways.

"Touma-sensei! I'm done!"

Itsuki, now sitting on the grass and propped against the wall, looked up and squinted as the sun shined into his eyes. Specks of black seized his vision momentarily and it took a few blinks before he could see clearly again. When he saw the face of bubble Konozuki Ayame, he smiled. "Yes, Konozuki?"

"I'm finished with the drawing, may I leave?"

Retrieving the book from her hands, he flipped through the pages that were relevant. With a simple nod and red check in his grading book, he dismissed the girl and returned to his aimless daydreaming.

∞ 4:30 PM, Friday
His mood from 3 o'clock was no where near as peaceful as his mood then and there.

Itsuki was expressionless--besides the corners of his lips drooping occasionally--and he made it his job not to pointlessly react to his mother's remarks. They were at an important event--adults only so his little sister was unfortunately absent. His father, the CEO, was about to appoint his older brother as the new Marketing Director of the family corporation. It was surprising. Not. Even though Itsuki "tried" to act proud of the announcement, his face remained somewhat stoic and passive. Hiroshi was practically primed from birth to take on a high position in The Touma Organization. Everyone knew that.

"Can you at least smile?" Sumire hissed as she gave Itsuki and look of disgust, fanning herself lightly with a pamphlet. Enomoto Sumire, his half-mother, was a remarkably evil woman. He wasn't one to speak or think negatively of others, but she was one of the two people that he made exceptions for. The fact that she hadn't thrown herself at him like an angry lioness yet continued to bewilder him.

"I don't understand what you mean, Mother." Itsuki responded, nodding with a genuine smile towards people that were looking their way.

That was when he saw it; the slight twitch in her botox perfect face. He irritated her unintentionally again, as if every little thing he did didn't send the woman off the charts. His sister wondered why he moved out as soon as he was old enough. Well, that was why. Itsuki could never, and probably would never, be able to satiate whatever bitterness Sumire had towards him.

It wasn't like he could blame her either. What kind of elite-status wife would accept a child out of wedlock?

The clapping soon ended and his attention was brought back to the stage. His brother was finishing up with a few words before returning to floor level and receiving words of appraisal and congratulations from fellow employees.

Itsuki watched with unconcern before his eyes met those of his father's, who looked a bit disappointed for whatever reason. His best guess to Touma Hiro wanted his other son to play a role in the company, which was a conversation that always came up when they were together. It was quite tiring to hear the same question and respond with the same answer, but things were getting better. Hiro was becoming a bit more understanding and less worried of Itsuki's decision to start his own company, trusting his son instead of his judgement.

∞ 5:50 PM, Friday
There were countless evenings where he'd walked passed the building, seen the same people sitting and drinking alone, but decided to continue on with his own life. Itsuki was always curious about one of the local bar and grill restaurants in Nerima, but the time to pay a visit would always skip by. He wasn't really a drinker either--courtesy to his maternal side. Every alcohol beverage he'd consumed went through him like water, but he was told that he simply hadn't found the one.

He stood outside of the restaurant, surprised by its never ending activity, and let out a defeated sigh. Although he couldn't afford to waste the night, his long legs dragged him inside anyways. The smell of sizzling meat and cold beer filled his nose in never ending waves, his eyes widening slightly from being overwhelmed. When was the last time he stepped into a bar and grill?

"Welcome! You must be new!" A man laughed as he observed Itsuki's face.

Itsuki blinked, nodded, and smiled to recollect himself before he sat down on one of the tall chairs, admiring the simple works of art that were scattered around the interior. There were some things a person would never be able to see from the other side of a window.

The man, whom he assumed to be the owner, stepped towards Itsuki with a wide smile. He leaned against the bar to meet Itsuki at eye-level, to which the young man greatly appreciated. It was easier to talk to someone when he could meet their gaze. Otherwise, it was just a little uncomfortable.

"What can I get you?" The owner asked as Itsuki suddenly noticed the intense, orange-colored hair. Somehow, his stress from earlier immediately dissipated and he felt like he was sitting in his studio.

"Your strongest, please."

2.30 pm

A breeze made its way throughout the hallways as windows were standing wide open due to the hot temperatures. It was nice to feel it passing his body, making him feel refreshed while wearing these ‘professional’ clothes. He preferred wearing more loose clothing, less dressed up but since this was a school that wasn’t exactly possible. He was only allowed to dress the way he wanted to whenever there was some trip going on outside of the domain. Those were his happy times, not being locked in a room, four walls keeping him there with only one safe way out. Some students thought of it as a prison where they had to learn against their will. He couldn’t really say anything about it as he was the same before. He only studied in order to meet the expectations of his family. It was tiring to say the least about it. The hours, days, weeks he put into studying just some trivial tests which weren’t even important. He practically didn’t have a life but now things had changed and he was… free.

His eyes were lingering on the outside view, his class had already ended as they had reviewed pretty much everything that was important. The weather was nice too so he made a deal with them which resulted in them finishing quicker than normal. One of the few times that the troublemakers kept calm and did what they were told. Perhaps he got on a good page with them? Chuckling lightly to himself as he thought about it. It was a possibility so it wasn’t too unusual of a thing to think about. However as he just dazed in the middle of the hallway, he felt someone running into him. Blinking rapidly as he was brought back to Earth. Looking down only to see a girl sitting down on the ground with a pout on her lips. Squatting down in front of her, looking a bit worried as he didn’t expect this to happen. “Are you hurt?” He asked, the girl only responding by moving her head from left to right multiple times. Smiling relieved as he helped her back up, grabbing the materials that she had dropped. “Do your best with your activities.” He commented with a gentle smile, patting her lightly on the head before she ran off with a blush on her cheeks.

4.00 pm

One thing he was grateful for was the fact that his apartment wasn’t too far from his working place. Especially at times when some teachers decided to drag him off to the cafeteria to talk about any upcoming events for the school. Part-time teachers weren’t really obliged to stay as it wasn’t anything important as they would be briefed about it later on anyway. [/i]Ah… I really want to go home. I’m hungry too… What should I eat this evening? I feel like eating some meat so maybe barbecue or grill?[/i] He thought as he stopped listening to the other teachers some time ago as it had gotten too boring. Thinking like this made him stay awake luckily. Just as he wanted to say that he was going home, they did it before him. Thanking the gods which he didn’t believe in so he could get out of this building.

Stretching out his arms once he got outside, the school almost completely empty besides those who had club activities, some taking longer than others. Having changed outfit, he felt definitely more at ease [his working clothes were now in a bag that he was holding]. He didn’t particularly dislike his working attire, it just felt like he had to be somewhere important constantly while he was just teaching his students. Anyway, he was now on a hunt for food as time had passed already, making him really crave for something good. However as he went through the streets, he took his sweet time and looked at the shops displaying interesting stuff, ranging from room accessories to clothes. Eventually distracting him enough that he went inside a few, letting his eyes go over everything and momentarily forgetting about his hunger.

5.55 pm

His grumbling stomach made him remember the hunger he had. Sighing deeply as he stood there on the pavement. Following his nose towards where it smelled good and to his surprise, he got to the front of a restaurant he was used to going to: Cruisers. Going inside as he knew the food was good here so he didn’t have to worry about that this time. The place was as lively as ever, making it fun for anyone to stop by even for the newcomers. A smile creeping up his lips once he spotted the owner of the place. Sitting down on an empty seat before calling Eijiro: “Darling~ The usual please.” Eijiro heard this and rolled his eyes but did what he was told as Keishiro was a regular. The usual consisted of: a glass of beer, grilled beef and squid. He liked both the same amount so he made it a ritual to eat them in one order to satisfy his needs regarding food. There was also a side dish which was a small bowl of pickled vegetables.

As he waited for his food, he turned around, putting his back against the counter only to notice two familiar faces. Touma Itsuki [ koala koala ] who was a part-time teacher and a woman [ peachnim peachnim ] whose name he didn’t know [both were in a close proximity from where he was sitting]. However he did see her somewhere before. The question was: where? His eyes lingering on the female as he tried to remember. Staying like that for a bit until he got it. “Ah, the woman from the lingerie shop.” He stated bluntly. The day he was pulled along with a co-worker who wanted his opinion about the lingerie she was going to buy for her boyfriend, that was when he saw her. Ignoring the stares he received from others sitting nearby him.

School had just let out, the loud ring of the traditional sounding bell filled all of the students with joy and excitement! The courtyard was filled with students talking and gossiping amongst themselves, a group of more athletic students were playing a game of Frisbee, though they weren't the best at actually catching the disc. A smaller and less active group sat on and around a picnic table, they were playing some weird cardgame with monsters and stars on them, one of the students yelled something about activating a...trap card? After about thirty minutes, the population of students started to dwindle and the courtyard became mostly empty, apart from the odd old-timer custodian Haro.

4:45

Just before the doors to the school were about to be locked and the after school detentioners were about to be released, a lone student walked out. He looked different than the other students, he was wearing a jean jacket and black jeans! He wasn't wearing the school's uniform but he had a pin of the school's logo pinned to his left breast so that should make up for it! He also donned a pair of round-glasses!

The boy's name is OMA RYUZAKI. He is nineteen and a third year in highschool! Oma walked down the cobbled path towards the open entrance gate to the school with one hand in his pocket and one wrapped around his phone, scrolling through his various social media apps. "Intagram: 6000, Tumblr: 2000, Youtube:....15..." He said to himself with a sigh. His deep and soothing voice reverberated through the courtyard, he hadn't spoken loudly but the emptiness made his sighs seem like screams. Oma continued walking and reading on his phone when suddenly something fell from the tree above the table and smacked into his head!

The boy screamed in surprise and began to rub a small bump on his forehead. He then looked down to see what mysterious object hit him; "Nani...?" It was a Frisbee Disc! Oma grimaced at the disk and remembered watching the athletic boys through the window as he worked on his late homework, he forgot to do it the night before due to his shitty attempts at a new fad: VLOGGING! He kicked the Disc away and it slid under the Picnic table, hidden with the shade. "Tch..." The boy muttered, ending his vengence against the Disc...for now. Suddenly, his stomach began to growl quite loudly. Oma then set out, leaving the school grounds in search of something to eat.

5:49

After a short subway ride and a couple minutes of walking, Oma spots something interesting; his new employer,Touma Itsuki, walking into a local Bar&Grill called Cruisers! Oma was excited that Itsuki let him join his small business; Suki Entertainment; it could be his first step into his dream of becoming an Internet Superstar. He was already slightly well known around town for his photography and other art small accounts, but he has always aspired to be something much bigger! He hadn't started his first day yet, and didn't even know what he would be doing! Nontheless, the hype and excitement was still very real inside of Oma.
Oma wanted to go inside the bar, but he was below the drinking age, he then wondered if he could just grab a bite to eat without buying a Beer. He began pacing back and forth, biting his nails, trying to quickly think of what to do. "Screw it!" Oma said, trying to sound confident before he nervously walks inside. It was dim and crowded with people chattering all around, he quickly turned his head, trying to spot his employer...or just anyone familiar to stand with so he wouldn't seem so awkward. "M...maybe this was a mistake!" Oma whispers to himself as he fidgets with his hands.

2 PM

Naoki had been bumming around the house for a few hours. He kind of woke up late naturally, so he decided to take an off day from school. He really didn't wanna get up at 8 in the morning... he wanted a nap. And nap he did, for several hours after calling in claiming he was suffering from incessant migraines and not speaking more on the matter. It was 12 PM, he took a quick bike ride out to buy some dango, and then took a few really adorable selfies with it before eating it. Then his mom called, and she was like, Naoki! Could you please come to the shop and feed the birds? and he really didn't WANNA, but he figured he might as well. He was already skipping school today, and sometimes if he helped with something, his mom would give him a thousand yen or so for his efforts. And since his allowance was already halved due to his weekly indulgences, that'd be nice. So he quickly rode home, and fed the birds... also the rabbits, and the reptiles, and the fish, and Poki. And then he took Poki for a quick walk, because mom clearly forgot and the poor thing was looking antsy. Most likely, she was making a delivery to one of the older customers. He... quickly got himself a small baggie of konpeito while he was out. Just for later!

Soon enough it was already 3 PM, and while he didn't really feel bad for sleeping, he'd also completely skipped out on his multi-step skincare routine, which he picked up via several Korean skincare tutorials. Toyoshima Naoki was probably one of the only boys his age who would request snail gel as a birthday present. He didn't even know snails were good for that much! Usually they were just kind of icky... Regardless, he brought Poki home. A lot of people were surprised Naoki owned what appeared to be a hairless rat dog, but they were all stupid, anyway. Poki's skin was almost as smooth as his own. Quickly Naoki took a daytime shower, went through his skin routine, blasted his hair with dry shampoo and changed into a different outfit. He went through a fair amount of laundry during the week... he didn't really like leaving the house in the same outfit twice. And hey, he owned a ton of cute clothes, why the heck shouldn't he wear them? It got under his mom's skin, but she just didn't get it. Ugh!

4:30 PM, after a few selfies, pictures of his dog, and then listening to Capsule albums on his bed and drawing in his notebook, he figured it'd be a good time to go do something with himself. Hopefully he wouldn't get slammed by his teachers tomorrow for not being around. His grades were already not stellar. He didn't need to be good at math, he was too cute to need that kind of thing! He returned to his bike with a bag slung over his shoulder. He decided to go without an eyepatch today. Sometimes he'd wear it to hide his lazy eye, but frankly, this outfit didn't go with any of the ones he owned, so he'd rather just go looking like he was staring in two entirely different directions. He took a ride off to the coffee shop. He wanted to check out that authentic bar place, but he couldn't get in without his mom, and he didn't LIKE going places with his mom. He was GROWN, he shouldn't have HAD to. He got in at around 5, and wandered around the area for quite awhile before popping into his favorite coffee shop.

Time to sit at a table... Wait and see if Takeuchi might show up, so he could weasel a free bread roll or two out of her.

4:30 PM
Sawako tapped her foot impatiently, waiting for her calculus professor to just end the class already. It was meant to let out at 4:15, but the old man had gotten engrossed in working out a particularly difficult example and they had gone a full 15 minutes over time. Crap. Crap, crap, crap. I am so going to be late. she frowned, stealth-checking subway timetables on her phone while professor Watanabe had his back turned. She was on the verge of just packing up and walking out when a blessed stranger spoke up from the back of the classroom. "Uhh, professor? I think we're out of time..." they trailed off, trying to be as delicate as possible. Watanabe, in turn, pushed his glasses up higher on the bridge of his nose and finally, thankfully glanced at the clock. "Oh!" he blustered, "so we are! We'll finish this example next time. Class dismissed." He wasn't even all the way through the word 'dismissed' before Sawako was packed up and sprinting down the hallway, out the door, and off to the subway station. Her job at the coffee shop was one she needed, and she could not afford to be late.

5:00 PM
The very second that the subway delivered Sawako to Nerima Station, she was running to the coffee shop as if her life depended on it. The way there was a rough one at her breakneck pace -- the streets tended to be fairly busy with foot traffic, and she certainly bumped into a fair number of people, only having time to yell "sorry!" as she recovered and dashed past them. Finally, at about 4:59 PM, she managed to get there with about 15 seconds to spare. Of course one of the stricter managers was on duty today -- just her luck. The manager cocked his eyebrow, ready to admonish her. "Cutting it a little close, aren't we, Sawa-" "Sorry! So sorry, won't happen again," she replied, only half listening to him as she ran into the back room to put her barista apron on and tie her hair up in a quick, messy ponytail. She finally burst out of the back room and got behind the counter at about 5:01 PM, as ready as she'd ever be to work for the next few hours. She hated taking this late shift, but it was what she usually got saddled with because of her class schedule. She was about to let out a sigh when she noticed her manager eyeing her, so she caught herself, straightened up, and put on a smile. Gotta at least pretend like she wanted to be there, right? She began taking orders and ringing up customers, hoping that this day wouldn't get any more hectic than it had already been.

Of course, as soon as that thought popped into her head, in walked human hurricane himself, Toyoshima Naoki. Oh, great. Great! This is just what I need right now. Thanks so much, universe. She didn't dislike the kid exactly... but he was always trying to get free sweets out of her, and she always caved because she didn't want to deal with any whining. For now, her strategy was to kind of hide behind the cake display case and just pray that he wouldn't notice that she was there.

Wataoka Okiku

2:40 pm

Okiku’s day at school was eventful. Well, just as eventful as any other school day, at least. She learned what she was assigned to learn for the day, had a laugh-filled lunchtime with her best friend Mayu, and learned some more before she was finally ready to get out of that place and not see it for another two days.

Okiku already had her weekend all planned out. After school, she would meet up with Mayu right outside the doors and walk home with her like always. They would check in with Okiku’s father, Ippei, and pick up her so-called baby brother, Ume. After that, all there was left to do was hang out around town until it grew dark. Maybe they would visit that peachy boy who sells flowers, he really did seem to enjoy the girls’ company. Once the sun was hanging low enough to meet with the horizon, their plans were to head home to the residence of Mayu’s older brother, Itsuki. There, they would have the slumber party of the year, just like all the slumber parties the girls would have every other week or so.

Right outside in the courtyard was where the youthful girl sat in wait for her best friend. Finally, she spotted her and shouted a loud “Yucchi!!” her voice echoing off of the school walls. Okiku ran up to her friend with her excitement radiating from all over her face. The girl was positively beaming, her gummy smile being like it’s own source of light. “Come on, let’s go pick up Ume! I bet he misses you!” she giggled. The girl wrapped her hand around Mayu’s and led the way out of their school.

“So what do you want to do before we go home?” Okiku asked on the way to her house. With how much time she spent there, Mayu’s home was practically a second one for Okiku. She always referred to it with such familiarity. “Do you think Peach-kun is working today? Oh! Yucchi!” Okiku gasped. She quickly pulled her arm out of one of the straps of her book bag and whipped it around to her front, opening it up and pulling out her journal. “I found a new kind of salamander today on my way to school! It was so early in the morning that the dew in the grass made it so slippery~y! But I got a good look at it. She was so shiny!” The girl flipped through the well-worn pages of her journal as she spoke.
The book was much more like a discovery log than any journal under the possession of a teenage girl. Each page was covered down to the last inch in sketches and notes about small, everyday reptiles and amphibians that inhabited the suburban neighborhoods of Nerima just like Mayu and Okiku themselves.

When Okiku found the right page she held it up for Mayu to read. There was a sketch that took up the top half of the page. It was very detailed, even accurately depicting the slimy texture of the creature. Over the years, Okiku has grown quite a skill for sketching up small creatures strictly off of memory, and this could be witnessed easily simply by flipping through the book, starting from the beginning pages. “I don’t know what breed it is, though, I couldn’t tell. Remind me to look it up when we get to your house tonight,” she smiled.

Of course, she had to glance up from the book every now and then to make sure the two of them hadn’t made the wrong turn or were about to run into a street light. During one of these glances, she spotted her friend Nakitani Aya, most likely on her way home as well. “Aya~a-chan!” she called. “Come hang out with us, we’re going to have fun today!”

The restaurant was full. Chatter filled the air as small bouts of laughter and accompanying the clinking of glasses talked. The restaurant was filled with a variety of of individuals, from young adults on a date to adults having meetings over lunch, the usual 3:00 pm visual. While others dined, employees in the back were at work, serving the Friday lunch rush and preparing for the dinner rush of a Friday night. While the chefs danced with the pans, the waiters and waitresses spun around like tops in the restaurant, quickly scurried around the restaurant before going to halt, waiting the spun again by the customers sitting. Because it was only about 3 o' clock, not everyone was busy. Some busboys, waiters and some chefs sat in the break room, either changing into their uniform or talking before their break was over. However, one specific waitress wasn't doing anything of the above. That waitress was Kohaku.
Kohaku (or as most referred to her as Mochizuki) was sitting down on a chair, dozing off at the slightest flutter of her eyes. The young woman had been working since the morning and had originally planned to leave at one o'clock, but had to work another two to three hours after another waitress called in "sick". She couldn't refuse an extra wage and an order from her boss, M.Ike, the girl stayed, tired as a dog, but she stayed.
Kohaku finally got up from her seat, stretching and yawning rather lethargically before a fellow co-worker.
"You okay, M. Mochizuki? You don't seem so bright eyed and bushy tailed as before."
"I-I'm fine."
The girl then grabbed her phone and wallet before dragging herself across the room to the vending machine place, prodding at the machine for an energy drink. She snapped the top of the can and took a large gulp before setting it down on the table. Kohaku clicked her teeth and sighed, swiping her phone from her pocket in the process. "Sorry, I can't make it at the moment. I'll text you in a few hours." Click. The young woman sent a text to her pupil, Mayu, who had an affair with her for tutoring after school but wasn't set anymore after the new change of plans. There was no way she could go around it or be at two places at the same time, leading to a cessation of her future plans. As the ringing of the call bell ordered out the plates, Kohaku stood up and joined the ball of waiters at the dining area, spinning and waiting to be spun until her work day was over.

—琥珀—

As the lunch rush passed by, Kohaku slipped to the locker room then to break room, hoping she wouldn't get any more hours. "M.Mochizuki—", her stomach fluttered as her boss spoke her name. "No sir, I will not work any more hours if that's what you're asking." she interrupted, talking to him in a clear and precise tone, almost like a sneer at M. Ike. She made a beeline out the restaurant and closed the door behind her. "Have a nice day..?" M. Ike muttered perplexed and somewhat dejectedly.
The young woman shuffled to the parking lot before making a mental sigh before looking at her car. She dragged herself to it and shut the door, leaning back and resting her eyes and back before she had to work again. The young woman then pulled her phone from her bag, looking at the time, then texting Mayu again. "I'm back. Have any time for a session? I hope you do~" she looked at her text, quickly scanning it before changing the whole text. "Back on schedule, Hope you're ready to study." She brushed her back and tossed her phone back in her bag. "Who am I kidding? I'm pretty sure I just disrespected M. Ike back at the restaurant." She thought as she sat back up and put the key in the ignition, then driving back to Nerima.

—琥珀—

Kohaku drove back to her favorite parking spot in town, parking and soon looking at the back of her car, revealing piles of clothes, blankets and other human necessities being pushed into her backseat and trunk. She gazed at the pile, reviewing her schedule mentally before getting out of the car. Kohaku left the premises and soon left to the streets of Nerima to hopefully meet up with Mayu and clear her head. However, a smell soon taunted her nose, teasing it with the aroma of grilled meat. That smell was coming from Nerima's only sport's bar: Cruisers. With a strong gaze (well, a glare in Kohaku's case), Kohaku peered inside, looking at the ambiance and most importantly, the food. The sizzle of the meat against the grill, letting the marinade hug the meat from fire, while slowly grilling to a nice medium rare perfection.
Gurgle.
She heard a familiar growl coming from her; that familiar sound is her stomach. Kohaku snapped out her trance and soon sped-walked away from the premises, walking to the nearest cafe in knowing that if she went to the restaurant, she wouldn't even be able to afford a beer to cry in.

The time he got up after a nap. His eyes puffy from resting after a busy day doing practically nothing. Having gotten so bored that his only view of fun was to just sleep through a part of the day to make time go faster. Sitting up on the sofa, barely opening one of his eyes as the sun had no mercy on him. Shining throughout the window as if it was going to burn a freaking vampire. Groaning as he managed to get both of them open, so he could see something. For a single guy living alone in an apartment it was pretty clean, visitors had praised him for it as well as they didn’t expect it from him. Having seen him more as a messy person behind closed doors. It ticked him off as that was the way they saw him but never got angry as he had gotten used to the prejudice people were bound to have. Perhaps his appearance added up to it.

Anyway, he switched on the television, people talking some stupid nonsense about a reality show that was going on. He couldn’t care less about those. The only things he did enjoy to watch were variety programs as he could just laugh with them without feeling guilty about it afterwards or being judged for it by his friends. Moving to his bedroom where he pulled out some clothes for the day, deciding to go out for some a bit instead of wasting his day on the sofa. Switching off the television, grabbing his keys, cell phone and wallet which he stuffed into the pockets of his pants.

5.00 pm

Once outside he was at a total loss about what to do. Maybe he should’ve checked some stuff before going out. Ruffling wildly through his hair which oddly fell back into place as if it wasn’t touched. Kicking an empty can as he wondered about what he could do while walking through the streets. Receiving some stares from strangers, mainly directed to his clearly visible tattoos. “What the fuck are you staring at?” He eventually commented to someone who was staring way too long. The boy scurried off, taken by surprise by Hiroto’s behaviour. Clicking his tongue towards the kid as he saw the leaving back. “Brats these days.” He muttered under his breath as he kept on moving. Eventually taking a break from the strolling around to get some street food: takoyaki. He wasn’t too fond of it but it made do to still his hunger.

Watching the vendor prepare the food skilfully, it made Hiroto actually pay some attention to it. The smell was good, better than those he had before so he was actually quite expectant about the taste now. Six balls were popped in a small box whereas Hiroto proceeded to pay for it. Feeling the heat through the carton which made him switch hands once in a while to hold it. Placing it on top of one of the high tables standing around the small food truck. Pricking a toothpick into one of them before taking a bite. First reaction: almost spit out because it was still too hot. Reaction two: enjoy the taste from it despite the burning sensation in his mouth.

Touma Mayu
∞ 7:20 AM, Friday
One. Two. One. Two. One. Two.

Her arms swung behind her, thrusting her body forwards as she swam. Water rushed into her ears and nostrils as she remained afloat on her back, the sound of her coach motivating her dancing across the waves. As much as she wanted to appreciate his encouragement, he really sounded like an angry, gurgled mess, which only made it more difficult for her to focus.

Mayu was preparing for a swimming competition a couple weeks from the present that would determine her place in the finals. Her schedule made her practice five days out of the school week, with Friday being her only morning session. Normally, Friday was her off day but since she'd made it through the semifinal round, her coach was being especially strict.

A whistle sounded, marking the end of the race against two fellow backstroke swimmers. The young female returned to a normal normal floating position, her toes wiggling beneath her in the water. She pushed up her goggles and rubbed the water off her face, blinking rapidly as she tried to clear her vision. "What's my time?" Mayu asked, her voice hitching at the end as she let out a sneeze.

Her coach wore a serious expression, which sent a wave of butterflies into Mayu's stomach. "You beat your record." Coach finally said, the old woman's serious expression becoming a happy one. She helped Mayu out of the pool and they both clasped hands in excitement. If Mayu beat her own record, which was a good one on its own, that meant she may have a chance of being top three at the final swim meet for first years.

"Alright, everyone!" The coach yelled, her voice seeming to echo across the pool even though they were outdoors. "Practice is over. Go shower and get ready for your first class."

∞ 3:00 PM, Friday
Mayu let out deep sigh and yawn she her hands reached for the sky, the muscles in her back loosening and her bones making questionable sounds. She really hadn't payed attention to what was going on for the last hour, mostly because she was super excited for that night. She and her best friend, Okiku, had been planning a sleepover the whole week. The sleepover was something she really needed to because that meant she got to stay at her older brother's place an extra night out of the week.

The girl strolled down the hall, her book slung over her shoulder as if she were some kind of delinquent. She was making her way to the art room in order to confirm with her brother about Okiku coming over. When she saw him cleaning up some of the supplies, she let out a grumble. "I'm so jealous. All of your students already gone. I wish mine would let us out early."

Itsuki let out a soft laugh. "Well, not everyone is as cool as I am." He raised an eyebrow jokingly before stopping what he was doing and walking over. "So, what are you here for? Coming to make sure it's okay to have a sleepover?"

Mayu gasped, practically dropping her book bag in response. "How did you know?"

He shook his head and returned wiping down a table, his hand almost moving mechanically because of how often he must've done it. "I don't know. Maybe because you kept texting me about it." Itsuki mused before crossing his arms in a teasing way. "During class." He didn't continue any further, besides reaching into his pocket to pull out his wallet. After handing some money that Mayu tried declining, he told her that he'd probably get home too late to cook so they should go out and eat.

"Ah! Thank you!" She smiled.

It wasn't long before Mayu was near the school entrance when she noticed Okiku. Running with her mouth wide open, she yelled, "Kiku-chi! Sorry for making you wait so long! Sensei was taking years to explain the homework and then I had to go see Itsuki." She happily let the shorter girl lead the way as she listened cheerfully to Okiku speak.

"Mm... I wouldn't mind visiting the flower shop. Maybe we can bring him some snacks if he's there."

Suddenly, her friend was pulling a book out and began flipping through it rapidly. Mayu watched in awe as the different creatures passed by before landing on a rather detailed sketch. "Eh? That's so cute. I wonder what it's called." She agreed to reminding her friend to look up the breed, humming slightly as her head moved side to side.

"Oh! Speaking of Aya-chan." Mayu half-ran, half-clumsily tripped her way towards the somewhat older girl. When they were face to face, she stopped and let out a tired sigh. Aya was one of her newer friends and someone that Mayu was a bit jealous of. Unlike Mayu, she was smart, pretty, and feminine. Guys liked girls like her but it wasn't like Mayu minded. She didn't really care about boys at that point of her life. "Yeah, you should come hand out with us! Maybe you can spend the night too. I'm sure my brother wouldn't mind."

Touma Itsuki
∞ 5:30 - 6:00 PM, Friday
The owner seemed to glow upon hearing Itsuki's answer, his body disappearing to the back for a millisecond. The young adult took that time to call his young sibling and inform her of his current status, only because she and her friends were staying at his place for the night. He didn't want to seem like that careless adult that wanders into his house at 2 AM, even though that was unlikely to happen. The only reasons he'd ever arrive home passed midnight were usually business related, and he'd just crash in his office if that were the case.

Brrp. Brrp. He waited patiently for his sister to pick up, not in any hurry because she was probably out doing who-knows-what. After a few more rings, he heard the mic rustle against her face.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Mayu," Itsuki answered calmly, his posture appearing to relax immediately. The next few minutes went by relatively slowly as his chatterbox sister updated him on her evening so far. Unlike most siblings, he was quite curious and involved with Mayu's life so he failed to notice the glass of golden liquid that had slid up in front of him or the appearance of new customers.

He chuckled, finally noticing the liquid and taking a sip of it. Itsuki cleared his throat, his face making an almost sour face as he set the drink back down. Asking for the strongest beverage was probably a mistake. His throat felt like it was on fire and his stomach felt like it was about to erupt like a volcano. The burn even made his body heat up and forced him to remove his jacket, revealing the high quality of his shirt and vest.

Why did he ask for the strongest again?

"Hello? Are you okay?" Mayu's voice brought his attention back to the phone call, the man immediately apologizing. The conversation strayed away from his powerful drink and towards the purpose of his call. He explained to her that he might be later than expected and reminded her to grab dinner. She expressed her understanding and the two then parted ways, the call ending with a quiet beep.

Sighing, he decided to tackle the drink once more but more slowly this time. Itsuki was actually surprised at how quickly the taste changed. It was still strong, but the sudden shock from earlier really numbed down the intensity. The drink went from a forest fire to a calm river only after two sips, meaning he still hadn't found the drink for him.

Ah, the woman from the lingerie shop."

Itsuki turned in the direction of the voice, not really getting a good look at the man's face, before facing whomever "the woman" was. There was only a seat between them so it was quite easy to see her face in the dim lighting. She was fairly attractive in her own right, her body clad in typical office worker attire. It did strike him as odd since there weren't business in Nerima. Then again, he was wearing a suit too so that didn't really say much. Maybe she was a lawyer.

However, the one thing that really stood out about her was how much she seemed to enjoy the food and drinks. It was a bit refreshing to see.

A breathe and two sips later, his attention turned back to the man who had made the blunt comment only to be moderately surprised. The surprise factor didn't come from him recognizing the guy, but from the newfound knowledge that his coworker revealed he was at a lingerie shop. "Aikinawa?" Itsuki said, a slight tone of surprise mixed with teasing affection. "I'm a bit surprised to run into you outside of school, but I guess I should be more surprised by you being at a lingerie shop."

He chuckled lightly, listening to whatever either of the two others if they had anything to say. It was then that the ring from the door opening turned his attention elsewhere. Another familiar face had appeared to which Itsuki found all too coincidental and convenient. The poor guy at the door looked almost lost and a bit nervous.

"Oi, Oma!" Itsuki raised his hand lazily while holding his drink, head resting on his free hand with his elbow on the counter. He waited for the younger male to sit next to him before turning to the owner. "Anything he wants. Non-alcoholic beverage only."

"What brings you here? We see each other tomorrow." Itsuki was a bit different from most other bosses. He kind of did whatever he wanted without really caring about the consequences as long as they weren't harmful. The people that worked with him were often victims of his meaningless affection and teasing, even if there were fairly new like Oma Ryuzaki. That's what made a lot of people respect and admire him though. He may have been younger than the typical boss, but he was extremely kind and made sure that everyone felt like they belonged and were cared for.

“Ahhhh~!”

Now one and a half pints in, "put-together" Yamamoto Fumie licked her lips, savored the beer’s aftertaste, and dug into another serving of grilled beef. She nearly whimpered at the medley of flavors as they danced across her mouth. The bartender handed her a side dish, toothy-grinned and chest puffed out. He was definitely appreciating the silent praise.

Of course, Fumie wasn’t rude enough to decline. Immersed in the delectable meal, she seized the plate of grilled vegetables, and dove in.

“Eiji—mmh—ro—” she managed through bites, “make sure I don’t—mmh—drink too much, okay?” She swallowed, and looked up at him seriously. “Otherwise, the aftermath is on you.”

With an airy nod, the man continued sorting out the glasses behind the counter. It wasn’t the most comforting, but she decided to trust him anyways. He knew well enough that she could only risk three drinks in public. Any more, and she’d be a red-cheeked nightmare. Heavy drinking was best reserved for her residency, where she could sprawl about before the television and make a mess of things.

Moments of munching and sipping on her part passed, before Eijiro looked up from his work to speak.

“Fumie,” the barkeep began, simultaneously polishing a freshly-washed glass, “Looks like you didn’t bring any men again, tonight.”

“You really have to bring that up while I’m eating?” she complained. Her brows furrowed in dissatisfaction. In the past, she never brought her boyfriends over to the local eateries—or even her own house—out of fear that they’d come to know of her double life. Now, she’d given up on the thought of relationships completely. Either way, her situation appeared to Eijiro as a pitiful plight, and he could not stop talking to her about it.

With a heavy sigh, the man set down the glass, and placed both hands on the edge of the counter. “You never go to group blind dates, throw away the numbers guys hand out to you, and haven’t once talked about your love life. How can I not be concerned?”

“Okay, okay, Dad.” Fumie quipped, directing her attention to the steaming skewers instead of Eijiro’s defeated expression.

Sure, she understood his worries. He was probably convinced she'd become one of those cynical cat ladies down the line. But she knew now that even if Mister Right were to come along, he’d run for the hills as soon as he’d arrived. It was better to dedicate oneself to something more faithful, like work, beer, or comic books.

Untroubled, the woman gulped down the last of her drink, sighed, and waved her glass before the bartender. “Refill, please!”

[div class=bodytitle] — 5:50 p.m. [/div]
When Eijiro’s attentions drifted from her to his job, Fumie occupied herself by visualizing what she’d do when she would reach home. She could pick up some hangover supplements on the way in case things got a little too crazy tonight. There was also her favorite show… would she be able to catch tonight’s episode in time?

Before she could panic, the barkeep’s eyes lit up as someone walked in. “Welcome! You must be new!”

Half-overwhelmed by the idea of missing out on the whodunit, the woman barely noticed the stranger settling into a seat one space away from hers. It was only until he spoke, that his silky smooth voice broke her thoughts.

“Your strongest, please.”

Three words, but it was enough to spark Fumie’s curiosity. Tilting her head a bit to take a peek, she found herself staring a little longer than intended. The beautiful stranger was clad in a polished suit, his hair conditioned and features sharp. Though there were some businessmen seated around the restaurant, she’d never seen such a young professional. It only heightened the allure.

Well, perhaps, she was mistaken. Perhaps he was just clad in formal wear for some special occasion, like a wedding.

Still, it took every ounce of energy to peel her eyes away from him.

Don’t let the alcohol get to you, she reminded, albeit only being on her third drink. The brunette inhaled sharply, forcing herself to think about who the culprit of the crime was. Was it the doctor, who somehow always disappeared at the worst moments? Or was it the chairwoman, who was responsible for that heinous plot in episode twelve?

“Darling~ The usual please.”

A richer, melodious voice soon entered the picture. Fumie could have sworn she’d heard that playful tone somewhere before, and she craned her neck back to confirm. It was another suave young man, but this one she’d seen around the restaurant ever so often. Seven years, and she hadn’t ever said more than hello.

She bowed her head slightly in silent greeting, but didn't know if he had managed to catch it. Instead of drooling over their charming features, Fumie decided the plate in front of her was more interesting.

That was, until a comment threw her wholly off guard.

“Ah, the woman from the lingerie shop.”

Choking on a piece of meat, Fumie lightly struck her chest, before finally managing to swallow. Wide-eyed, she stared at the blithe fellow, who was somehow indifferent to the current environment. His dark orbs met her own, and she straightened her back.

“You’re mistaken,” she contested. Her lips formed a disapproving pout as she looked him up and down, trying to avoid eye contact with the suited man seated near them.

It took a few seconds, before it finally registered. Though she hadn’t seen him at the local lingerie shop, she had been there this week. In that case, he definitely wasn’t mistaken. A flurry of panic swelled within her as she tried to recall whether or not she was in her “grandpa” mode.

Tracksuit… was I wearing my tracksuit?

...No. No, that day was a Tuesday…

Cheeks flushed, Fumie averted her gaze, and took a swig of beer. It was a close one, but her secret was still safe.

But… wait, what was wrong with this guy?!

She didn’t have time to ponder the question, as the suited man finally spoke up.

"Akinawa? I'm a bit surprised to run into you outside of school, but I guess I should be more surprised by you being at a lingerie shop."

Blinking, Fumie set her cup down. She glanced between the two men, her surprise growing by the minute. Amidst all this, she could feel Eijiro smiling at the three, fully amused by the situation.

“Ah, so you know each other...” Fumie murmured, more to herself than anything. The suited fellow said something about ‘school’, but they were too old to be students… Teachers, then? Administration? Janitors?

None of the occupations seemed to click. Then again, associating any of the above with a bar—and a lingerie shop, for that matter—wasn’t the best idea.

Minutes into her thought process, the man wearing professional attire called over someone much younger and out of place than herself. She watched as he spoke to the younger man in a relaxed manner, but supposing that she was intruding on a private conversation, turned her attentions back to her food.

Friday.

Nothing was more gratifying than that six-lettered word. It was the day of the week in which students, teachers, workers, or any other person subject to societal responsibility, could break free from the humdrum and look forward to a well-spent weekend. Like many filing out of Class 1-B, Hiroya’s head was held a little higher, and his normally vacant eyes kindled with life.

It didn’t help that this month, being April, was one of the biggest in the year. Families had already bought plane tickets and reserved hotels in hopes of making the most of Golden Week. While the Bando household was not going to be travelling far this year, a visit to Hiroya’s grandparents, celebrating Hiro's birthday, and Toshimaen amusement park (Suzue dragged him there annually) were a must. Meanwhile, Hiroya’s teammates (and self-proclaimed friends) intended to date the week away, and those who hadn’t landed a girlfriend yet aimed to in a span of three weeks, just to visit all the places couples usually did. And though Hiro himself couldn’t care less about road trips, Toshimaen, and the dating scene, he had to admit: the month off from work and the time to fully enjoy his birthday were much-needed blessings. All in all, there were so many things to look forward to, it only made sense that both Hiroya and his classmates had a little extra bounce in their step.

This was also why, as the boy sauntered off to the school gym, his mind had tuned out the first year boys’ eager greetings, and why he’d failed to notice the stares and whispers of girls as he passed. Instead, the thrill of relaxation being at his fingertips left him wandering in his own thoughts.

“Yo, Hiro!”

But of course, an unwelcome arm flung around his shoulder snapped him back to reality.

He didn’t have to tilt his head to know whose face was bobbing inches away from his own. It was Goto Masamura, the youngest, shortest, and noisiest member on the basketball team. Masamura had no sense of personal space, and clearly did not understand that following someone around the entire day did not equate to being friends.

“So, you’re not skipping practice today, right?” the brunet inquired, conveniently ignoring the silent treatment, “Right, of course you’re not! You’re headed to the gym right now. Hey, do you think Coach is getting stricter on us, or is that just me? Because yesterday when I was on cleanup duty—hey, are you listening? Hiro—”

Seconds into Masamura’s tangent, Hiroya managed to wrench himself out of his frail arms, and slipped into the locker room. As soon as he stepped inside, he greeted his upperclassmen, who were rather annoyed at his sudden appearance. It made sense, as the first year made a habit of skipping practice whenever he felt like it. Ignoring their side-eyeing, the boy set down his belongings and opened his locker.

Some teammates had already changed and begun practice, but Hiro made no haste in ridding himself of his school uniform and slipping into a black jersey, shorts, and sneakers. By the time the boy shut his locker and strolled into the expanse, Coach Yoshida’s expression had contorted into a scowl so vile it could rival the Grinch’s.

“BANDO!” he roared, and the room fell into an ominous silence. Save for a resonating dribble of a basketball, the entire gym seemingly stopped to watch the scene play out. Now, although the boy wasn't late today... he had skipped enough drills to warrant the wrath of any sane coach.

Everyone held their breath as Hiroya languidly approached the older man, hands stuffed comfortably into his pockets.

“Yes, Coach?”

Twitching at the child’s cheeky semblance, Coach Yoshida inhaled sharply, before lifting an accusing finger. At this moment in time, the onlookers knew precisely what was going to happen. There would be a suspenseful minute of pause, in which the coach would consider his options. To reprimand, or not to reprimand, the team’s star player.

How the boy had made a name for himself, despite being a first year, was beyond even the coach's understanding. Hiroya joined the team when school started, which was not long ago. Yet within the span of a week, the skills he’d shown had already surpassed the glittering athletic reputation that followed him everywhere he went. Almost laughably, within that same period, Hiroya managed to rub off on his teammates the wrong way, show up late to each practice, and sometimes even skip practice altogether.

It was a dilemma, indeed. But, everyone in the gymnasium knew by now exactly how the coach would handle it.

“...Stop standing there, and get shooting!”

With leniency.

“Good work today!”

The team said their goodbyes and departed, some still clothed in sweaty jerseys and others back in their uniform. Hiroya couldn’t be bothered with changing out of his basketball clothes, nor with following his fellow first-years to the local chicken place. Choosing instead to sling his bag over his shoulder and tune out Masamura’s whining about his lack of camaraderie, he started off towards home.

Though his legs were somewhat sore after practice, he would do anything for a late night of gaming and show bingeing. Besides, his house was only a few blocks away from school, so the walk wouldn’t be too taxing. (Well, anything was better than dealing with Masamura for another two hours.)

Minutes after passing the school’s gates and petal-adorned walkway, Hiro turned into a lively sector of the neighborhood. There were a few families out and about, waving to the boy as he passed. If he were to linger for half an hour more, the entire street would be teeming with joggers and nature-lovers alike. He didn’t blame them; with the sun’s setting came pleasant zephyrs and a breathtaking view of the spring blossoms that lined the district. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that springtime in Nerima, at least, in his neighborhood, was one of the most magical times of the year.

The boy finally stopped before a two-story house, one that was simplistic yet all too familiar to him. Though the overall grey and white scheme made the building look almost bland, the array of flowers blooming in the bushes added a touch of warmth to the entryway. It was his mother’s idea to meticulously tend to the house entrance, so that it stood out among the others. She made the most of the small space they had out front, and her efforts had definitely paid off.

When he stepped foot into the Bando residency, Hiroya was greeted by the sound of something bubbling on the stove, along with his mother’s humming.

“I’m home,” he announced, rather sluggishly. Only moments after doing so, his eyes widened as a spoon was pressed against his lips.

“Welcome back—how is it?”

His mother, Ashikaga Kanae, batted her lashes expectantly, cheeks lifting as a smile spread across her face. At once, the boy slurped the aromatic broth down.

Hiroya looked up from the large spoon in his hand, and met his mother’s eager, honey brown orbs. “It’s delicious, Mom.” he revealed, features brightening with sudden greed. “Is it done yet?”

The beam on his mother’s face only widened. She ushered him to his room to change, and asked him to call his sister down to eat. Then, and only then, could the family dig into Mom’s specially-prepared feast.

“Suzue!” the boy called out, flinging his leather, shoulder bag onto his bed soon after he reached the stairhead. Oddly enough, only silence came from the room next door. But before his curiosity could get the best of him, Hiroya stripped himself of the sweaty garments and slipped into something more comfortable. The shower would simply have to wait until after he’d devoured his mother’s cooking.

Poking his head through the crack of a door clearly marked “Suzue”, the boy searched for his unusually unresponsive sister. She was not hard to find; the girl was nestled into her bed, laying on her stomach with her legs crossed behind her, decidedly invested in something other than her brother.

His gaze followed her own line of sight, which was concentrated upon a sizeable novel. Her pocket-sized fingers obscured some of the cover, but Hiroya could, for the most part, make out the book title: Bread and Roses, Too. He watched for a few moments as her eyes combed through the pages, before he finally entered her room. It was only until he lifted the book from her hands that she tore her attention away from the writing.

Immediately sitting upright, Suzue blinked, her mouth parting as her brother grinned down at her. “Oh—welcome home!”

Hiroya returned her greeting while simultaneously examining the book in his clutches. It didn’t look like something her peers would be reading, and he wondered how much of the text she could actually comprehend. He glimpsed from the novel and back to Suzue.

Although she was eight years old, she did everything she could to not show it. Even now, her dark brown locks were arranged into brushed, loose curls, a delicate two-band headpiece keeping the hairs away from her face. The dainty flare dress she sported was something she’d chosen for herself, to coordinate with her accessories. As she stared up at him, her large eyes brimmed with uncanny perception—one that could occasionally surpass his own.

Releasing a breath, the older of the two bent down to meet her eye level. He handed the girl her book, and she placed it on the nightstand as he continued.

“You really like that book, huh?” Hiroya commented, eliciting a satisfied nod from his companion. She hopped off the bed, her long curls trailing just behind her.

“Did you know the story happened in real life?” Suzue asked, clasping her hands together, “It’s about a girl, and her dad works at a mill—”

“—All right, all right, let’s go downstairs first. Dinner’s ready.”

With that, the boy plodded back down to the kitchen, his sister following suit. They settled into a chair each, stomachs grumbling as Kanae unveiled the three platters spread out before them.

Broiled mackerel, dumpling soup, and blanched greens graced the table, steaming and ready to be eaten. Their mother made a habit of cooking too much, and today was no different; the Bando siblings were sure that the dishes could serve the entire street. Nevertheless, they dug in as soon as appropriate, complimenting the food as they munched. It would be another hour or two so until Hideaki, their father, would be home, and Kanae wasn’t one to make her kids starve until then.

However, she, herself, refrained from eating a full serving; it was her inward promise to always enjoy the last meal of the day with her husband, as it was a breath of fresh air after hours of work.

“Ah, that’s right,” Kanae began, setting her chopsticks down, “Text Fumie and let her know we have leftovers again. She’s always helping us out in these situations.”

That’s a nice way of calling her a glutton, Hiroya thought, almost smirking. Just as it was a self-made tradition for his mother to wait until his father returned from work, it was obligatory for the bumbling brunette to come bursting through their front doors anytime over the weekend, ready to be fed. At least, he could give her one thing: her belly was useful enough to save them the trouble of buying a second fridge.

6.00 pm

Keishiro hummed in response to Itsuki, smiling a little as he was asked about what he was doing here out of all the places he could choose. Tilting his head to the side as he thought about the answer that he could give to the male before shrugging lightly with a cheeky smile. “I felt that you might be here so I came in?” He said, chuckling as he was joking around again. “But in all honesty, I didn’t know where to go and this bar was the first thing I passed on my way, the scent made me decide to come in. Who can’t resist Eijiro’s cooking anyway.” He commented seriously as this place was indeed one of his favourites, mainly because the food they served was the perfect meal for in the evening. Especially when there was alcohol involved.

”It wasn’t my idea to go there. She just pulled me inside after I said that I would wait outside. Women have a strong will… It’s almost scary.” He muttered towards Itsuki, showing some kind of scared expression on his face to show how he had felt during that time.

When the woman started coughing after what he said, he now knew for sure that it was her. His grin widening as he looked at her with a spark of curiosity in his eyes. Thinking that the girl could make some interesting expressions when she was shocked or embarrassed from what he could see now. Making him want to tease her a little but since he didn’t actually know her, it would’ve been a bit rude if he did so. Her denial made him try his best to hold back his laughter as he could clearly see her awkwardness from his comment. Earning a smack on the back of his head by the one and only Eijiro of Cruisers. Well, he had seen it coming.

Hearing the comment of the woman, though it was difficult to understand, he nodded lightly. The moment his food arrived though, his eyes seemed to shin as he looked at the gorgeousness in front of him. Taking a bite from the grilled food, followed by a gulp of beer. It was so good. The perfect thing to do on a lazy evening.

Leaning his head on top of the palm of his hand, he looked back towards the female, his lips relaxed so he wouldn’t be stuck in a smiling position for the rest of the day. “Anyway, I’ve seen you in the train station before. You work in another city?” He asked out of curiosity as he didn’t want to eat alone after all. ”Let me guess… You’ve got something to do with a big company? Is it an ICT one?” Popping some grilled squid in his mouth while bombarding the woman with his curiosity.

Touma Itsuki
∞ 6:00 PM, Friday
The man was chewing on some peanuts, American-style, as he listened to Keishiro carefully, nodding in agreement. Itsuki was in the same predicament only moments ago. He didn't know where to go and Cruisers happened to be a place that was on the path towards his home. It was all quite convenient he had to admit, especially since he ran into someone from his part-time job.

"Ah, Eijiro. Is that your name?" Itsuki said, smiling towards the owner who nodded and easily returned the kind expression. It was very comforting to see a business owner that was kind to his customers, especially since he'd see the opposite with his father and brother. People like Eijiro were the ones that the young adult wanted to place his money with, which was a good idea actually.

"Mm... I can understand that. Mayu isn't easy to handle sometimes." He laughed as he took a swig from his mug, shaking his head as he thought about his rambunctious little sister. She was indeed a force that couldn't be reckoned with, but at least he didn't have to worry about her getting into drama with boys. The last thing he wanted was for his precious little sister to lose sight of herself. "Speaking of which, is she doing any better in class? I found her a history tutor a few weeks ago, but she hasn't really told me anything about her progress."

He would nod and grin at Keishiro's response before turning his attention to Ryuzaki and making sure the food was okay. When Keishiro continued to make conversation with the "woman at the lingerie shop", however, he couldn't help but tune in. It was too interesting not too and he wasn't even the type to be nosey. Itsuki tilted his head slightly at the word "ICT" as it was vaguely familiar to him. Maybe that was where he'd seen her before, but the guy had come across so many women in business attire that faces were often murky in his head.

An idea suddenly popped in his head, the need for conversation making its way into Itsuki's body. He scooted a seat over, placing right next to the woman and waved Keishiro over. "We might as well sit together if we're going to talk. Makes the food taste better, no?" He said before turning to the woman and bowing his head slightly. "I hope you don't mind," Itsuki smiled, placing his suit jacket carefully over his lap, "I'm Touma Itsuki."

It wasn’t long after Fumie had collected herself that her attention was directed towards the man called “Akinawa”, who began devouring his food as soon as it arrived. The satisfaction brimming over his features gave her pause. It was almost like she was staring at herself.

Absentmindedly, the woman lifted a beer pint to her lips, the cool liquid making her shudder. She lowered the glass, and peeked at the cheeky stranger once more.

He was staring right back at her.

Nearly jumping at the realization, Fumie stopped herself short when he began speaking.

With the palm of his gentle hand nestled comfortably under his chin, he seemed to have let go of any and all stresses of the day. She could now see that his dark, layered hair complemented golden skin, and though his eyes were the same color as the majority of the population, they were subtly angled and teeming with spirit. As much as he’d taken her by surprise, the man was admittedly charming.

“Anyway, I’ve seen you in the train station before. You work in another city?”

It was a mere two sentences, and yet her body suddenly became alert. What if he knew where she worked? What if he’d recognized her after hours, as well? What if he somehow knew her coworkers, and spilled her secret? The very possibility drove her into veiled panic.

”Let me guess… You’ve got something to do with a big company? Is it an ICT one?”

Fate proved to be on her side, after all. The man had no clue what she did for a living, which meant he hadn’t followed her to work. Of course, she knew it was silly of her to assume so, but over assuming had now become second nature to her.

Running fingers through her coffee-colored hair, the woman visibly relaxed, and tried to ignore Eijiro’s blatant grinning. “You’re really something, aren’t you…” Fumie murmured, recalling his first words to her, then raised her voice. “Close enough! I work at a marketing agency downtown.”

For most marketers, this would be the moment where they would whip out a business card and flash it in front of their potential client’s face. Fearing an arbitrary appearance at her workplace, however, the woman simply broke into a smile.

“I’ve seen you around the restaurant. You are…?”

Akinawa Something, she wanted to say, but found it wrong to casually admit she was eavesdropping.

No sooner had she said this than a sudden movement drew her attention away from the cheeky stranger. It was none other than Akinawa’s coworker, who scooted beside her.

When he suggested that they should sit together to make their meal better overall, Fumie nodded in agreement. Though a part of her wanted nothing more than to dive under the heated table and resume her mystery show, there was a voice in her head convincing her that she should ease up and enjoy the moment. To linger a little longer than usual, and let loose.

That voice was probably the alcohol, and it was also probably the voice she shouldn’t have listened to.

Nonetheless, Fumie found herself easing up, letting her drink take the wheel. Perhaps she could risk it, after all. It wasn’t like they would see each other again, anyways.

“I don’t mind!” she remarked, and stretched a hand towards the man seated beside her after he introduced himself as Itsuki. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Yamamoto Fumie.”

The woman wore a pleasant smile, cheeks brushed a light pink from the alcohol. She leaned back in her seat, and signalled Itsuki’s coworker over as well.
