Let's start with a bit OOC, shall we? Welcome to the recruitment thread for my upcoming roleplay! Road to Safina is a post-nuclear apocalypse setting that I created several years ago, combining various elements from various post-apocalyptic and dystopian media. I have made a wiki for the setting, although currently it is a work in progress that I am slowly working on. Thanks to my friends, most the spots I had planned have been filled, so I'm currently looking for 2 more players. The character creation thread will be posted in the week or weekend, and the roleplay might start next or the following week. If you have any questions about the setting, it's characters, the roleplay or it's story, please feel free to ask as much as you want.
It's been 247 years since the world ended with the greatest of all wars. After being viciously hit with economic downfall, rampant disease and never ending famine, the nations of the old world fought for the last scraps and in their hunger for power, they destroyed our once beautiful world with nuclear and biological weapons of mass destruction. But humans are resilient and too stubborn to die, when the fires died, we emerged and attempted to rebuild, some succeeded, creating settlements, some even established new nations, but most of those who dared perished in this new hostile world.
It is the year 2304, a group of scavengers, travelers, adventurers, loners, killers, explorers and robbers are brought together through various means by the government of the Union of Potomac, the direct successor of the United States government. The job is simple, escorting a caravan full of water, food, medicine and fuel from the border town of New Wilmington to their allies in Tampico, an important city part of Union of Mexican Cities. These vagrants will be rewarded with cash, bullets and other items that are valuable out there in the wasteland and the opportunity is too good to pass for most of them, however, they will be forced to tag along with another group, led by a man of pure charisma who refers to himself as 'Priest'.
The group will travel through the enemy territories of the New Dixie Confederation, the perilous swamp lands of Florida and the take a boat through the pirate infested gulf of Mexico to reach Tampico, but during their travel, Priest will reveal the real reason why he joined them and tell them a secret that will change everyone's life.
Before the War...
The earliest years of the 21st century were tumultuous, as the stagnation and status quo prevailed following the start of a unipolar world. Everything changed in the year 2025 when, according to scholars of the time: “It signified the end of most hostilities in the East and a new era of prosperity in the West arose to take its place.” While most contemporary researchers question this narrative, it was undeniable that humanity had made significant leaps in fields such as biology and robotics that changed the facets of society and reshaped global economies. While not every nation shared this prosperity, those that did grew fabulously wealthy and powerful as a result. A ‘golden age’ had ensued, with many believing that their ambitions could take them to the stars, but it was not to last. In 2039, a massive economics crash from the result of overinflated robotics and biotics stocks plummeted the global economy into a freefall. Chaos reigned as countries tried, in vain, to use the limits of capitalist systems to rein in the hardship and devastation. Wars broke out over resources, which had now begun to decline drastically due to the overt mechanization of industries and processes.
Worse came the “Argentine Plague”, a highly infectious and transmissible disease said to have originated from Buenos Aires. Like the bubonic plague, it too spread like wildfire; only by using cockroaches did it ensure its devastating effect upon the world. Millions perished as infectious experts desperately worked for some form of vaccine, and many countries collapsed as a result of the death toll growing too large to bear. The most powerful of nations hoarded their medicine and equipment, seeking to preserve their own populations selfishly rather than collectively working together to beat the plague. This only stoked the flames of resentment among those that were left to suffer and die.
In 2043, things only got worse as the European Union completely cut off the United Kingdom and Ireland after a new strain of the plague, “The Brittonic Variant”, wiped out most of the isles’ vulnerable. Pakistan and India threatened war once again, not only over Kashmir but also over water rights and the access to medicine; the Chinese invasion and subsequent conquest of Taiwan led to the complete cutoff of semiconductor production to the West, throwing electronics and technology production into complete disarray; and the United States refusing to send aid to overseas territories and states such as Puerto Rico and Hawaii nor to its European allies, bringing about global outrage and scrutiny.
Beyond the details of the United States seeking to secure oil fields in Khuzestan, details on the leadup to the Third World War are murky as America declared war on Iran. Fought with the robots and bioweapons made during the years of prosperity, though nobody knows who fired the first world ending weapon. The most patriotic insist that it was the Chinese, while others believe France released a devastating weapon to counter American aggression and unilateralism. A small minority of scholars of the old world insist on the blame being faulted towards the United States itself towards firing the first nuke; but everything is speculation, even among those that were alive at the time such as the Goliaths and Mistfolk.
After the War...
In the 247 years since the end of the war, the world remains unchanged in its divisions and violent ways. Vast regions of the world being uninhabitable wastelands to most life except those that had arisen from the aftereffects of the weapons used. Despite its immense military power, the United States suffered unimaginable losses during the war with most of its greatest metropolitan regions being completely destroyed of depopulated through nuclear and biological weapons. And while not impossible, reconstruction efforts have been slow and painful.
In the Commonwealth region, the Union of the Potomac emerged from the ruins of the Old World to bear the flag of the United States as a claimant successor to the old superpower. Several cities have been rebuilt by them, and have tried several times to reclaim Washington DC to varying degrees of success and failure across multiple military campaigns. But now they fight a war against those they had mistreated and underestimated in a resurgent “New Dixie” Confederation; the conflict having emerged when a southern President was killed by “Northern Elites” who could not tolerate “a true Christian Dixie”, according to them.
In reality, the seeds of resentment between the two regions go back centuries even far before the Third World War. But the aftermath only made things worse as many of the southern states felt the Union had simply forgotten about them and were left to fend for themselves against the many horrors lurking in the bayou and wastelands. But between these two larger factions is the Democratic Republic of Congaree, its inhabitants baptized by ignorant hatred who now carry out a guerilla war against the south, for allowing the “Night of Burning Churches” to happen, and against the North, for abandoning them alongside the rest of the South to their fate.
Further South, anarchy rules in what remains of the territory of Florida. Pirates from Tampa, believing in the legend of the Bay Bucanners, fight against cultists from Orlando who worship the creations of an ancient cartoonist. And the Seminole peoples have emerged from the ruins of the old world to reclaim their ancestral lands, fighting against any and all that would encroach upon their tribes with a righteous fury.
The lands that once surrounded New Orleans and La Fayette flooded even before the war, and little was done by the government to help those in need. After the war, these flooded wetlands became home to a resurgent Cajun culture, who became “swamp stalkers” for La Fayette and New Orleans. Traversing the old ruins, fighting mutants and beasts, and bringing old technologies and materials back to the cities for trade, this has made the Cajun and both sister cities wealthy, with visitors calling New Orleans the “New Venice of the World”.
Beyond the Commune of Baltimore lays a wild and crazed wasteland, one that they have learned to fight against as a united front. Once one of the most dangerous cities in Maryland in the Old World, the Commune is now one of the most peaceful cities in the former United States – but a variety of threats surround them, from the crazed scavengers of Philadelphia to the mutated Freak marauders that emerge from Point Lookout to pillage and loot the region. Their only nominal allies turn out to be the Families of New Jersey, a group of self-proclaimed Mafiosos who protect small and large settlements against these attackers and creatures for their own profit.
The city of New York, once the great economic center of the Old World, is inhabited by various groups under a quasi-democracy, but the threats surrounding the old metropolis cause the New Yorkers to be even more wary than they were before the war. The Bronx and Queens get into constant street skirmishes with the Brooklyn Blue, a self-proclaimed police force that uses force to get its way more often than not, and the Mistfolk of Manhatten often remain isolated and distant despite the pleas of the New York Magistrate to help deal with the Freak populations of the abandoned sewers and subway lines. Additionally, the Mafioso Families take advantage of the chaos and uncertainty to pressure the communities of Staten Island into their profiteering rackets. However, the greatest danger lies further up north.
The influence of the writers of old holds great sway in the New England region, causing a whole new cultish worship to arise from the ashes of the Old World. Driven mad by war and disease that scoured the region, many of those that survived sought answers on things they could not comprehend; and when the Fishmen appeared on the shores, a man named Ovedo del Pantano saw this as a sign that the writings of old were in fact prophets warning them of the horrors that lay beneath the waves. Ovedo’s cult worships these Fishmen and their “unspeakable gods” that dwell in the darkest places of the world, and their worshippers will do anything to please the horrendous deities they believe they serve.
Unlike the more populous coastal regions, middle America was spared from much of the horrors that had been inflicted upon those areas. Despite this, it has become a land plagued by conflicts between various bizarre and strange groups and pseudo-states that dot the landscape: the Rust worshipping cultists, motorbike riding highway-knights, insane cannibals, neo-Viking raiders worshipping Jesus and Odin, insane libertarian preppers with doomsday bunkers rumored to be filled with precious valuables and treasures, and gun cultists looking for an excuse to use their firearms on anyone in sight inhabit the northern plains and lakes regions. While further south, you find countless warlord states with ample military gear in constant territorial raids and conquests against their neighbors or other regional states such as the Navajo-Hopi Alliance, settlements protected by a union of Goliaths and badge wearing justicieros, and roaming hordes of Tejanos looking for settlements to trade with or raid against. Such lands are lawless, where only the strongest and most insane can truly survive and thrive.
The West Coast remains in a constant state of conflict following the end of the Third World War, as the highly militarized Republic of California tries to bring order to the lawless lands surrounding the ruins of Los Angeles and Las Vegas, now home to prominent anarchistic raider groups. Seen as symbols of old world power, several presidencies have tried and failed to reconquer the regions for strategic control as well as access to the highly advanced technologies in the military bases that are housed in San Diego and the Golden Gate City. However, the problems of urban warfare is compounded not only by the terrain but also by the swarms of military automatons that continue to carry out mindless kill orders for a country that is no more. The three way fighting continues to break apart the ruins of skyscrapers and buildings, leaving entire landscapes of rubble in their wake.
Further North, distanced from the constant warfare between the Californians, Raiders and Tejanos, is the Commonwealth of Cascadia, a socialist and environmentalist nation who are allied with the Yakama and Nimiipuu tribes that have formed a mutual alliance to protect one another from the many threats surrounding them. Trying to preserve what remains of the Pacific Northwest, all three utilize both pre-war and ancient tribal methods of conservation on the landscape to try to renew the rainforests back to some semblance of previous biodiversity, but work remains slow on a project that will require multitudes of generations to finish.
- Q: When will the CS thread be up?
- A: As mentioned in the OOC part of the post, it will be up later this week!
- Q: I see there's more races than just humans, can you tell me about them?
- A: I'll add a section about this to this thread later, and expand on these races on the character creation thread.
- Q: Where can I find X piece of lore?
- A: While there's a wiki for the setting, it is very barebones at the moment, so your best source of information is me, feel free to ask me anything!
- Q: Is there a character limit?
- A: Technically but not really, as you might see down bellow on the players section, two of my friends have two characters, I allowed them because they are my friends but I also put up the conditi0on that they must focus on one character more than the other. I also allow players to create as many NPC's as they want, as NPC's are easier to handle.
- Q: How often do you expect us to post?
- A: Well that depends on everyone's schedule, I won't pressure players to post ASAP, but I expect them to post between a day or two after an update.
- Q: How necessary is OOC participation?
- A: We use Discord to talk to one another about the setting, our characters, pre-established relationships, etc. It's a handy tool that allows me and the players interact with ease, however, I understand several people do not like using Discord, so having a Discord account is not a requirement to join the RP.
- Q: Can we swap characters if we find ourselves not liking our character?
- A: Of course, we can even send your old character away safely or kill 'em on the spot! But in all seriousness, players can switch their focus to their second character if they desire or can create another character to focus on, if the player has no desire to continue playing their previous character, that character will become an NPC and either stay in the group or leave all together.
- Q: What is the expected posting conduct? Do you look for more than single line posts? Do you expect a certain level of good grammar?
- A: It would depend in the situation, I expect players to type more than 5 sentences, but sometimes a short answer makes more sense than a long one, so it is entirely situational.
- Q: What is the general mood/genre of the setting? Is it grimdark? does it have comedic bits? etc.
- A: The story has various elements from various post-apocalyptic setting, so I'd say it has a mixture of various moods, some locations and regions will be grimdark, while others will appear ridiculous and bombastic, some will look like they are straight out of a western or from Fallout, it all depends of where your characters head next.
- Q: And I have a question about character ages. Is there a minimum age requirement for characters to be? Can we have a character that is a teen? A young teen? A pre-teen?
- A: Never thought about it but there really isn't one, players can play as a child if they want.
