abilities.

Mark of Power: Stone

Mark Abilities:

Stone Limbs
- The skin on Christien's limbs turns into stone which makes his strikes more powerful. This makes his limbs heavier however as it takes more strength to strike.

Stonekenesis - With enough concentration, Christien can move rocks and any object made from stone telekinetically. His ability to move something however depends on the size of an object. He can throw a few stone bricks with enough effort but something like a boulder will be close to impossible.

Petrification - With his touch, he can turn any living being into stone. But Christien's hands need to be on them at all times until they can be covered in stone completely.

Languages Spoken: Norwegian, English, Portuguese, Cantonese

Skills:
- Close-quarters combat
- Small-arms training
- Espionage, Christien is sometimes asked to do missions undercover and destabilize cults from the inside out.
- Research Physicist, on a few occasions Chris has worked with hunters who are focusing on developing weapons for hunters to use in combat
- Strategist, not always the type to lead but is the type of person to coordinate with others and figure out the best means of approaching a situation.

Quirks
- Loves to be out in the rain
- Doesn't like to sleep outdoors, not since his first demon experience
- Really good at billiards. Won an HQ tournament
- Can actually play the bass
- Always asks how others are doing
- Is very self conscious when he's the center of attention

psych report.

"The first time I met him was during the Hunt for the Obelisk, and throughout I mostly had my eye on him. I had selected the hunters for this mission personally and I needed to know who they really were. It wasn't like I was asking them to prove why they were chosen for this mission, I had their files on hand. I only called them in to talk.

The first thing I did was ask his HQ at the time about him and to be as plain as possible. They spoke pretty positively about Chris, he was an up-and-coming hunter at the time. He was said to be a very receptive, attentive, and caring man.

When Christien walked into my office I could tell how anxious he was. He was a lot younger then, having only been a hunter for 5 years he only had 2 demon kills to his name. I chose him for this op for the simple fact that I needed the younger hunters to catch up with the older ones. I also didn't want to risk losing most of our experienced hunters to the demons.

We talked about how he ended up being a hunter, all he could talk about was how much he missed his family. He missed his older brother's wedding and his little sister got accepted to Oxford. You could tell how sensitive he was when you asked him about the people he cared about. It allowed him to open up more to me, it was like he forgot I was his boss. But it's not like I protested. I had to accommodate the needs of the hunters as well as keep them happy enough to stay.

Christien had spoken about his doubts and wanted to leave but ever since his fateful confrontation with a demon all those years ago, he said he needed to be here. It was that conviction that made him more anxious to be a part of the mission than to be taken off.

Once the mission was finished I saw him a changed man. 8 months of him being in the field and he came into my office with a sense of being grounded. He had seen more death than he had thought was possible. He didn't say much afterward, all I could say was that he was not the same anxious Chris I met 8 months ago. Although he seemed convicted of his purpose, I can't help but think about how uneasy he probably feels."

Dossier.
Chris joined the hunters when he was 22. After being saved from a demon encounter while hiking in Switzerland. He reached out to the hunters through an airline which was one of the hunter's many front organizations. Through them, he was able to get a flight to their airfield in Slovakia which also served as a training camp. Chris was given an in-depth interview about why he was here. His experience with a demon pushed him to join and he was willing to go through the training necessary to prepare himself.

Chris struggled initially. His trainers took note of how unfit he was and he contemplated giving up on multiple counts. A lot of people quit or couldn't make the cut so it was very discouraging. Still, Chris stuck through it. He pushed himself to his limits and the trainers took note of him and his efforts. Chris was 24 by the time he reached the end of his training and went through the Blood Ritual as was the standard for all hunters to acquire their mark.

Afterward, Chris was sent to London. He was given the cover of a journalist who worked at 'Hereford Press Company.' Like many new hunters, he was mostly taken on cult raids as support. Over time, he worked his way up and was said to have found community in his HQ and was said to be a quick learner by his superiors. One cult raid would change the course of his life, however. During a raid in the Yukon, Chris and his squad ran into a demon. The first time Chris had seen one in a long time. He was able to overcome the demon and received high praise. Very few hunters with Chris's experience could kill a demon, considering he had only been a hunter for 2 years. After 3 more years, keeping true to his reputation as a reliable and up-and-coming hunter, Chris was selected to participate in the Hunt for the Obelisk and came out alive.

After St. Ava, Chris took point in a lot of missions and played a more direct role in strategy and planning operations.

interview.
"Why did you become a hunter?"
"I mean I felt like I had to. I've met a lot of other hunters who had the same experience I did. It's in my file, I don't feel like going over it again. I just couldn't see living a normal life ever again if spawns of hell were stalking our everyday lives."

"Do you have any loved ones that you miss?"
"I miss my family. I never see them as much even less so now. I just miss being close to them, every time I see them it's usually just some pleasantries, we update each other on our lives. They ask how my job is going I just say 'Fine.' And even though they are estranged I'm just glad I'm fighting against what could've taken my life and probably theirs. As far as I know, they're safe and that's all that matters."

"Reflect on your time as a hunter. Any highlights?"
"The hunters I know usually bring up the time I killed my first demon at 24 or how I was lucky to come out of the obelisk hunt alive. But I feel those acts don't define my entire experience. I mean there are other hunters who've killed more demons than me in their teens...

Honestly what always comes to mind is this stakeout I did in Montana. I was working with a hunter whose mark was literally just 'dodge' and it was exactly what it sounded like. When they concentrated their powers on dodging, their body would just dodge anything that would come into contact with them. We were stalking this demon in the forest and we found it slumbering in a brush. All they said was 'wait for my signal' and just poked the demon awake. The demon was just swinging at them but it couldn't touch them. It was kinda funny.

Knowing what they were trying to do I had to concentrate on lifting this heavy rock which did break a sweat. Eventually, I hear them scream 'NOW!' and I hurl the big rock at the demon splitting its head open.

The hunter almost collapsed from exhaustion but we both came back without a scratch. Hope they're doing fine now."

"Do you use your mark outside of your missions or training?"
"Never had a reason to. I mean I've had the urge to punch someone with a rock fist but those are intrusive thoughts with people I shouldn't be harming. Mostly the junior hunters."

"Do you like the taste of demon blood?"
"Do people like it?? I feel concerned that this is being asked."

"Do you enjoy being a hunter?"
"Enjoy is a strong word. Does it have its moments? Yeah. It's nice to be with people who are willing to stand by you and stop an always-coming evil. We do good work... But I miss my old life. Don't know if I can really stress that enough."

mark abilities
Shadow Puppets - Sam’s signature move; she forms tangible creatures out of the shadows into a three dimensional creature that she can control at will to attack or defend. When she is only using one creature, Sam can enter a meditative state whereupon she can link with the shadow creature to see, hear and move using its body. However, during this state, Sam is unaware of what is happening in her real body. Creating shadow puppets is also taxing which leads to Sam’s increased consumption of demon blood. She limits herself to making three creatures as any more would be too difficult to control and create.

Umbral Weaponry - A less complicated usage of her mark, Sam is able to form weapons out of shadows with the same durability as most other weapons that blood hunters use. She is unable to create long-ranged weaponry using this.

Cloaking - Sam can cover herself and others in shadows to render the target almost invisible. This technique often only works in dimly lit areas and requires much more concentration and focus if done in the presence of bright light— so much so that Sam has to stop doing anything more complicated than walking.

languages spoken
French, German, Spanish, English, Latin

skills
Marksman

Parkour

Gun Training - Sam has shown proficiency in most handheld guns, preferring fighting with them rather than in close combat if given a choice

Training in CQC - Though not an expert, Sam shows the ability to be able to hold her own for a while but she’s far less experienced in it

Covert operative - Sam is known for her ability to gather information from secured areas by way of the usage of her abilities. She is also trusted for high-risk operations of infiltrating areas of interest and her ability to extract herself should the mission go awry

quirk
Dislikes dealing with her family

She speaks to her shadow puppets as if they were real animals sometimes

Her body temperature is lower than most people and is often cold to the touch; most attribute this to her mark

Unironically likes the darkness as she finds it safer

Often has an air of impassivity around her, making her seem unapproachable

Has actually tried archaeology and enjoyed it so she can often be seen studying books about it during her free time

Has more reserves of demon blood on her for emergencies due to the nature of her abilities

and pray you'll have a better next life

psych report
“The Durand family— one of the Scarlet clans. I had some expectations when I saw Samantha for the first time when she was just a child being taken around the Nexus, being shown around by her parents on where she will eventually work. There was still some sort of bright-eyed wonder in her eyes back then but I didn’t get much of a chance to talk to her.

The time we had finally properly spoken to each other was when she was officially transferred to the Nexus to start a full-time job there. She had aged significantly since then, collected scars and experiences like a prize and her eyes dimmed quite a fair bit.

We had talked and it was almost far too easy to see and hear what the Durand family had done to their child. They had made a soldier plain and simple. This was someone who didn’t know anything outside what needed to be learned to be a quick and efficient hunter— ruthless, effective and, most of all, loyal. What she needed was camaraderie and experience so I recruited her for the Hunt for the Obelisk. She looked surprised, maybe even reluctant, but quickly shifted gears and agreed to it without question but I saw excitement in her eyes.

Samantha Durand came out of that with renewed vigor and, perhaps, the weight of lost lives on her shoulders. She had found her purpose once again; though, I do worry that this purpose turns into a thirst for revenge that she cannot be pulled out of.”

dossier
Being born into a Scarlet family, especially the Durand family, means that one will become a blood hunter or die. It was a cruel and outdated method of running a family but desperation breeds indifference and the Durand family’s mark of power had always been nothing short of useful. Sam was no different from the rest of her family; from her childhood, she was only taught what would be useful as a blood hunter. She had no time for mundane school or making friends outside of the veil.

Once she was 16, Sam was properly sent out to one of the training areas in France. While she was already trained from a young age by her family, it was still important to go through the rigorous training of the blood hunters so that they would be properly recognized as one. Her mark of power, as expected, was the Durand’s signature shadow mark. Since then, she started working as an archaeologist aligned with “Dupoint Archaeological Committee” to excuse her long periods of travel to remote areas.

Though she was young, Sam turned out ot be exceptional and useful during raids and investigations. Due to her pedigree, people avoided coddling her— though it would be more accurate to say that people avoided her in any capacity outside of work. However, as time passed, Sam learned to slowly open up and befriend others and not only see everyone in a professional capacity. She had managed to kill her first demon at 18, assisted in more before that. Though this was nothing to celebrate in her eyes; after all, she is a Durand, this much was expected from her.

St. Ava had changed Sam’s view on being a blood hunter. It showed her why her family refused to be attached to their companions and teammates; however, it also showed Sam how it could push people to better themselves as blood hunters so she used this experience to carry on the dreams of her fallen comrades.

interview
Q. Why did you become a hunter?
A: “You assume I had a choice in the matter. A Durand will always be a hunter; it’s either that or I don’t get to live at all.”

Q. Do you have any loved ones that you miss?
A: “There’s no love lost in my family. However, I did have a partner once. She had died during the battle at St. Ava. I wish I could have spent more time with her but, alas, that’s just how things are.”

Q. Reflect on your time as a hunter. Any highlights?
A: “Highlights? Most of what I’ve been through are rather common in being a blood hunter. Even more so when you’re part of the Durand family.

Though I suppose one of my most memorable hunts was when I had first met my partner, Sophia. Unlike me, she had joined due to an encounter with a cult and she’s more extroverted and kind. Our teamwork was terrible and everything was unpolished and I dreaded having to write out a report of what had happened due to it. However, she had showed me a way to use my technique in more unpredictable ways; taught me how to stray away from my own family’s teachings where I was bound to the same tried and true method without experimenting myself. I owe a lot of my growth as a hunter to her despite what everyone thinks.”

Q. Do you use your mark outside of missions or training?
A: “Far too tiring to do so. Not to mention, I’d rather not have to drink more demon blood than I have to. It’s a waste of resources.”

Q. Do you like the taste of demon blood?
A: “I don’t think anyone likes the taste of it. Though, I’m one of the hunters who is far too used to drinking it to really recoil from it nowadays. It’s… tolerable.”

Q. Do you enjoy being a hunter
A: “What else can bring more joy than saving the world and no one acknowledging it?”

Thunderclap: An intently powerful clap of the hands inspires a resounding shockwave of charged energy ro radiate from his position. While this skill is practically harmless to mortal creatures besides a possible momentary deafness (as the clap rivals a thunderclap in noise volume) and the risk of being pushed back by the energy flood (particularly applies to those in close range), the specific sound elicited by this skill is capable of pushing supernatural beings into a strong stunning state. The time needed for them to shake out of this stunned state largely depends on the size and type of creature, hearing sensitivity, and force resistance had.

Deafness: With this skill activated, rather than hearing noise, he gains a strong sensitivity to vibrations in any medium. This may allow him to detect the presence of large supernatural beasts from miles away, or offer advance warnings of unsteady structures ready for collapse. Deafness takes nearly two minutes to fully come back from as his body transitions back from detecting vibrations to noise.

Beam Communication: If he points at someone with intent, this skill allows him to send a burst speech or thoughts to that target. The channel is one-way and messages may not be longer than approximately five seconds or they will not send. Although the beam is invisible, it can be blocked, as it only travels in one direction and cannot curve around obstacles. Those who can detect magic may be able to visualise the beam as it travels. There is no limit to how many beams can be active at once though he must point and re-record the message for each target. If blocked by a mortal creature, the message will simply fizzle out; however, certain supernatural beings are capable of intercepting and deciphering messages.

Light Blade: A hand-and-a-half sword made entirely out of light energy forms in his hand. It does not make physical contact with the physical world, only capable of slicing through magic or the supernatural. He cannot throw the sword, be disarmed, etc. as the light energy disperses if the hilt is not in his hand. While the sword is active, his speed and intuition is likewise augmented, but not his dexterity or physical strength. As it makes no contact with the physical world, the blade cannot be used to block any real attacks (ie. rock blast, falling tree, knives, mortal swords) that come his way.
