Note: This is not set in our world, any similarities is simply for easy of world creation or is simply pure coincidence.
It is the modern era, colonialism ended, officially, a century ago. The Tainib Islands are unique in the region, for multiple reasons. For one they are the only nation that was colonized by three separate old empires at the same time. But closer to modern era, after the last global conflict, they had the first elections, a fascist regime took over with help from the military and religious groups. And now, with a global trade embargo, and the ensuing blockade of their waters, they have been stuck in the technology and building styles from a few decades ago, which would make them a unique tourist destination if it wasn't for the aforementioned blockade by the international community, they are going through upheaval, with the citizens now becoming disillusioned and resistant to the regime. Protests have been put down, people have disappeared. Different rebel factions are now rising up, but currently they are to scattered and relatively disorganized compared top the military. This is where you come in, you are a member of one of the groups. Your reasons are your own, your political opinions might be different to some of the other rebels, but all of you are united in one thing, you hate the current regime who has been oppressing you.

So it goes without saying, we're gonna be telling a story of rebels, guerillas, oppressed people who have had it with the wanna-be monarch of the islands. So there will be violence, swearing, alcohol use and probably drug references. We'll be steering away from explicitly mentioning stuff that is against site rules, obviously. Alluding to said things should be fine.
