Reusing characters

RandomBlobMan

That was a misclick I swear
Characters.

So a simple question here. How often do you reuse characters? And if possible, do you reuse a character from another roleplaying site?

It's a rare occasion that I make a character specifically for a roleplay xD  I have a list of, like, 35+ characters that I choose between when I need them.

Ooooh, a box of characters. And you don't know what you get until you open it.

Wait what

It depends on what I'm using them for, if I'm honest! :3

I also have main characters of mine I use in RP's, and I don't think I've specifically made a character just for an RP except maybe once of twice...

I'm on the opposite spectrum most of my characters are specifically made for a roleplay. And my roleplays tend to be too varied to reuse a character from one to another. Although in my original superhero universe I do have a small handful of characters I tend to add in to stories as they are relevant.

I don't think I've ever reused a character. I make a new one every time.

Sometimes, I use some of the same traits but no, I don't think I've done it as far as I can remember. I used to use the same faceclaims back in 2014 though.

I sometimes do, but mostly, everything switches except for the face claims because. I. CAN'T. FIND. FACE CLAIMS.

@A Nerd Named Rae this is off-topic but i have to applaud you using the same username on mutiple sites.

also delete the post and send it via PM before the mods see

I don't think they're going to shut down a topic for keeping to the theme of the topic. They aren't like the secret police or holding witch hunts

i mean I am not derailing the topic any more than people do in other threads. I'm not starting arguments, making a scene, or disrupting anyone else.

I tend to have a pattern of how my characters tend to be sadly, but each is crafted for the rp. The more information I get from the setting, the more varied and unique it tends to be.

I tend to remake a good amount of my characters for different kinds of Role-Plays, if they can be altered without losing their original basis. Otherwise, I tend to just create new characters for a lot of things I do.

I'm personally not a fan of remaking characters, because a: people don't tend to tailor them for the new RP in which they are being used; b: too often the player is used to the "old way" the character was written, and brings stuff in that shouldn't be in the new RP; and c: it shows a lack of effort on behalf of the writer.

Personally, if you want to reuse a character in an RP of mine, that's fine. But it shouldn't be readily apparent to me that you're just copy/pasting stuff, or else I'd likely deny the app.

I unfortunately project myself a lot onto my batch of 10-ish characters (more like 50 in reality, but currently 10 in use), often times unintentionally. Then I get emotionally attached to them, it's horrible. But the thing is, I care more about their unique personalities rather than backstory, so I make their history flexible in order to suit whatever RP they can get shoved into. And really, no harm in developing a character in many different situations.

being someone who draws like 99% of their own fcs most of the time i do re-use characters (r.i.p me the unoriginal), but all have this general basis that they need to follow, like

characters abcd fit in with ______ environment, so rps they can go in have to be modern or etc and they'd fail horribly in a mythical one

but characters ef fit in with _______ environment, so i can punt them in a mythical one but i need to throw some bizarre curve for a modern one

i recycle characters a lot. i have roughly 15-25 characters i flip flop between, but i try to tweak their backstory and skillset to fit the RP. some of them i have a massive preference for and recycle a lot. but that is because nothing is truly original anymore and i am too lazy to research and apply a new name or personality when the name and personality are essentially important details and i refuse to use Generic English 1 or 2 syllable names like Bob, Betty or John for example.  i might use 2 syllable names from another language, but i prefer to use a name that is roughly 3 syllables.

I tend to make a new character for each roleplay, recycling ones that I grow particularly attached to and want to expand on.

...but you could. Just think of the possibilities. Lol

I tend to create new characters. Sometimes they're versions of another character, either mine or from a TV show or book etc but that's never a conscious decision.

When I read an interest check if I'm not already imagining a character who could be part of that story by the end of the pitch I rarely join.

I don't usually re-use characters, I think I've done it once or twice but it's not a habit. The vast majority of my characters are custom-tailored to each RP. I can re-use a character from a role play that didn't go very far (because otherwise, I would have created a whole brand-new character for no reason), but I can't imagine role-playing a character for quite some time, getting used to them in one situation, genre, plot, etc. and then taking them out of that storyline into another verse where everything I've put them through just . . . didn't happen.

If anyone who usually re-uses their characters can tell me how they go about it and how that works for them, I'd really appreciate it :)

I do re-use face claims, though. Finding new face claims is kind of a pain.

I think for most roleplays I end up creating a new character, but I have reused characters before. Particularly characters who never got a chance to develop properly. If a roleplay doesn't get off the ground for more than a handful of posts, I feel badly that the character is wasted, so I use them again when I feel that their personality would be a good fit for another roleplay. They tend to stay within similar settings though. For instance, I've got two harvest moon OCS that I'd use in a harvest moon roleplay, and I've got two characters who can be reused in a sci fi setting.

I haven't reused any other characters that I can think of, but some of them are taken directly from the stories that I write. Usually though, if I'm using a preexisting character, is because they're well suited to the established roleplay plotline or setting.
