Requesting aid for side-quests

Alrighty, the spelling might be a bit off but that is the least of my problems.  I'm about to start running an Exalted game with a full circle (Dawn, Zenith, Twilight and all that jazz).  I'm gonna start off with a little show-off story where I can get a feel of what kind of players I'm dealing with since I have never seen them in action before (and some of them have never roleplayed at all).  My problems though have to do with the following adventures.

The Chronicle will be slightly based on the Bones story, that is it will take place in a valley where a war is just about to break out with the rat creatures, aka the hairy men.  The Hooded One in Bones will actually be an Abyssal named Seeress of Darkness and the Lord of Locusts is a Deathlord trapped in rock by powerful magic.  I will then throw in perhaps two more Abyssals to add flavour.  The storyline will mostly happen similar as in Bones, but instead of the Bones there will be Solars.  Most of the other main characters will show their faces.  I intend this to actually be the Chronicle.

What troubles me is the fact that I am going to need side-quests.  Something that can allow the players to take a break from war and perhaps even give them training periods.  It doesn't have to have anything to do with the Bones books but propably will have to take place in the Valley.  I really don't have any ideas of what to put them in other than the storyline.

Any ideas?

You've lost me. Are you referring to something we should know about?

Agreed, please elaborate.

He's referring to one of the great comic series, up there with Cerberus or Mage by Matt Wagner.

Bone was created by Jeff Smith, and the universe he's created has been played with by folks like Charles Vess and other luminaries in graphic arts. It's a high fantasy world, and despite its cute almost animal main characters, it's not really for children.

Charles Vess did a great series, Rose in the setting, and if you want more info, you might want to click here and check it out further.

Me, I'm waiting for folks to get off their butts, and put some time and effort into Mage: The Hero Discovered by Matt Wagner.  And Wagner is still hopeful about his Grendel project finally getting cleared and put to film.  Wagner, like Frank Miller, is someone whose work is perfect for film. Accessible, great characters, and stunning visuals.  Some comics don't translate so well into film, but I think that Wagner's work is a great bet.

Man, I love Bone.  Good luck with the game, but as far as side quests go, really anything that you think is less epic than the war is fine.

That's actually the problem.  I can't think of anything.  It has to be small enough not to effect the whole valley, but still must be something that can interest the players.  Let me know if a demon summoned by Seeress of Darkness (the Hooded One) is too much, its my best idea yet.

What about if the characters get wind of a plan for the Seeress of Darkness to summon a Second Circle Demon to aid her side in the war?  That would be big enough to affect everything--but only if they don't stop here.  Of course, for that plot to work you'd need a snitch (and precuring one could be a side quest all its own!).  There are tons of things you can do.  Perhaps the characters find themselves torn between continuing the fight or going to look for mysteriously missing children (which could have been taken by anyone, though some low-end, subtle Fair Folk would definitely be approrpiate).

Yeah, that's an idea.  But since I'm at it, any guidelines on creating a demon?  Any set numbers of points to put in Attributes, Abilities or the such?  I like the idea, and the missing children could be because of the Rat Creatures (they are bigger than the name suggests).

Guidelines for Demons?  Naw, there aren't any.  Take a gander through Games of Divinity, the Demon chapter.  I'd suggest bringing into the story either one Second Circle Demon or a few First Circle Demons (like the Blood Apes).

There's no real guidelines, but Second Circle Demons are complicated, because they're the souls of THird Circle Demons who are the souls of Yozis who... yeah.  You need to read Games of Divinity.

If all else fails, just use one of the Second Circle Demons from the book itself.

If you want Second Circle Demons that the players will probably not know, try some of these: http://exalted.xi.co.nz/wiki/wiki.pl?De ... condCircle .   See if any of those strike your fancy.

Second Circle Demons range in Essence from 6 to 8 usually, though it might be possible for them to be as weak as 4 or 5.  The average Second Circle Demon will have around 30 attribute points, 50 ability points, 20 Background Points, 10 Virtue points, an Essence of 6, 20 Spirit Charms and 30 bonus points.  I would suggest using the bonus point cost for DB's to customize a Second Circle Demon.

Wow, thanks.  That is alot of help, I can really use this. :D

Here's an idea, for a side quest, try involving a pair of adle-brained, quiche-obsessed, rat creatures. Maybe they could kidnap someone the characters care about, to eat, and the characters have to go after them.

Or perhaps they accidentally cross into the territory of Roque-Jah, a mountain lion Lunar.

Maybe they could run afoul city guards, but they cant just leave town, because they have to track down clues about the abyssals/deathlord, inside the city.

Oh, and by the way, this is a great idea, I hope you dont mind if I borrow it. Especially now that my creative juices are flowing on it.
