Regarding copy-write?

Sorry for asking so many questions, but this is something I have been wondering since I joined this site.


For our avatar pictures, profile pictures, and any other pictures, do they need to be royalty free? This may sound absurd, but is it okay just to use any old picture from Google?


I'd assume that's what most people do, but I figured I would confirm first.

As long as the owner hasn't stated they may not be used without permission, it's usually fine (but we encourage giving credit where it's due, even so).  If the owner requests that it be taken down, please do so (or we may do so for you, if they contact staff directly).



My own avatar comes from a YouTube video, so I have the link in my profile to give credit (also I tend to explain that when people comment on it.  I didn't make it, I just love it!).

I did   (Soft-delete, so you may be able to see it still, I'm not sure.  But others won't.)
