Viewpoint Reading Other's Roleplay Threads. Is It Okay?

I like reading people's RP threads, some of them are quite good and very entertaining. Which leads me to wonder if that's ok? Is it fine to tell people you think their RP's are good? Should you leave well enough alone? The threads are obviously in the public area but still I wonder.

Probably not, but I keep wondering because I don't what the social norms is. Do role-play threads have fans and followers other than the participants?

Yes! They definitely can do. My RP partner's friend once wrote some fanfiction of our roleplay... which was awesome. On another forum I'm on, it lists which users have read the thread, so I know some of them were following the RP. I'm on a sandbox site where everyone RPs in a large world but often read each others' RP threads and express approval. Honestly, I'm sure everyone would take it as a compliment that you are reading. If people don't want spectators they generally go into PMs/emails. Just have fun!

Totally fine!!! I've followed RP threads before and told the writers that I love their story. I've yet to have anyone come back to me with a "How dare you like our story and writing, stop reading it!!" Also been on the receiving end and it's insanely flattering. I definitely wouldn't feel bad about reading along.

Also agreed with Crayons that the people who don't like having an audience are the ones who tend to write in PM's. If you're posting in threads it's pretty much accepted that people are likely going to skim over your writing occasionally. Can't really get mad at someone for reading along when you're posting in a public forum lol.

I rarely read the RP's of others myself, but if they're posted in a public forum then they're fair game for anyone to read.

Just firming up the positive replies from Crayons Crayons and ashwynne ashwynne , I think it's rather healthy to look through the various styles and methods for writing on this site ~ whether that be content you enjoy or not enjoy, it's a learning experience regardless of the content. We've all picked up tips and tricks through modelling another's take on a certain situation (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery). I've particularly learnt a lot through reading the many, many fantasy Rps, conjuring ideas to bring to my own table and referring ideas that ought to be refined in more detail before unleashing it on the player-base.

"Constant pestering" you say, as though I'm not having a blast getting to play around with those ideas LOL 😂

Oh gosh... I didn’t even know it could be uncouth to read others RPs you weren’t in...

Personally if I’m not in it, I’m not interested, but hey! If others like what they read and may even join for it more power to ‘em!

“Why not?” I say! :3

If you read my RPs and enjoy them, that'd actually make my day XD

If I wanna do something private, it'd be on PMs or even outside the site altogether, and from what I've seen at least that seems to be the general approach people take.

But at this point I might just be beating the dead horse :P

I log out to peep sometimes so my name doesn't show up in the "users viewing this thread" lol

I am an unashamed reader of other RPs. RPN has a staggering amount of wonderful writers who weave interesting plots and y’all, I’m a sucker for any good story.

I don’t seek out RPs to read all the time, because I do have my own to re-read and write back to. When I find one though, I love messaging RP writers to tell them how much I adore their RPs and fangirling over new events that happen. As an RP writer myself, I’m happy when I see someone reading my stories. Fair warning, though — I might message you in the hopes I have someone else to gush about my brilliant partner and our plots to 😂.

I say go for it! If the creator(s) didn't want their RP to be looked at, they can always do it via private messaging. c: I know one or two people that drop by my RP once in awhile, and it always interests me to see their name at the bottom of the screen.

You heard it here first, folks. Directly from a Mod, lol. Let the thread stalking begin! XD

Sometimes I pop in and read RPs or look through the character list. I see it as reading a book, honestly, and some things I read are neat.

If I'm going to tell someone I like their RP/character though I'd send them a PM instead of cluttering up their OOC though.

True that! Thanks for the reminder =)

Why would it not be? It's writing. It's meant to be read (well, unless you're writing something privately that will never be published or posted on the interwebs) I mean, I'd certainly love if people read my roleplays. Not my old ones of course but I think my new one's are pretty neat once you get past the first one or two pages.

I think that so long as you leave your positive comments in an PM and not on their threads or wherever they're doing it, it should be fine! I do know that on Tumblr, it's considered rude to reblog a roleplay that isn't yours but just reading it (as well as you can on Tumblr) and giving one or both rpers a nice message and the thread a Like would still be okay then ^^ If they wanted it to be private, they wouldn't post it in public? Roleplay can be just as good as fanfiction sometimes~
