Tarick lied awake in bed, staring up at his off-white ceiling. His gaze met a a crack forming, the plaster separating into a dark void. Sleep was always such an aethemer to him. Ice cream. That's what he needed. Tarick forced his limbs to push his body up off the bed, the sheets rolled off him. With a heavy breathe, Tarick threw his legs over the edge of the bed onto the cheap, abrasive carpet below. "3:14" cut through the dark in deep, red LEDs while the sound of rain patted lightly against the window. He moved across the room, reaching into an old dresser to find and slip into his jeans and a dark shirt. After stepping into a pair of boots, Tarick moved across his tiny apartment, throwing his heavy longcoat over his shoulders and picking up his keys off the kitchen counter.
He moved out into the dark hallway of the complex, the wood paneling creaking below each footstep. He pulled a crumpled cigarette pack from an inner coat pocket. Idly packing it as he descended the stairs, he ducked below a low hanging edge. Once out on the street, he pulled up his collar to help cover as he lit his cigarette. The red bloom let loose the tendrils of flowing smoke into his lungs, his boots clapping in shallow pools of rain water. He looked around at the advertisement overlays being transmitted into his eye-overlay. The dancing figures of cartoon animals and scantly clad women played between passing cars in the sky.
Looking through the tall windows of the convenience store, Tarick took a deep drag, standing on the sidewalk.
