Question about Swallowing the Lotus Root

There's a charm in the Errata of Exalted called Swallowing the Lotus Root, that's available to all Celestials. It requires Martial Arts 5.

The problem is that Lunars don't use abilities for their charm requirements, they use attributes. Should this be changed to Dexterity 5 for Lunars and Alchemicals?

Interestingly, Lunars use the actual Martial Arts Ability to buy MA charms - with the sole exception of Lunar Hero Style. It could go either way though.

Check out Manual of Exalted Powers: Alchemicals. It has the original versions of all those Charms. It's a Knack for Lunars and a submodule for Alchemicals.

That's a significantly different charm from the one in the errata. The errata charm doesn't require a celestial style and is only essence 2, even ignoring the MA/Wits difference.

Well, according to the errata text, the Charm is a Celestial Martial Arts Charm, so it would use Martial Arts for everyone. Lunars only have Attribute mins for their native Charms.

Canon is pretty clear about using the MA ability for charm minimums and not allowing attribute substitutions. It is unfortunate that you pay more for MA charms by not having the ability favored, even if you do favor physical attributes. I think this is intentional, however, since the attribute based Exalts have much greater flexibility and adaptability. It seems that they are just not good at focusing deeply enough to easily master supernatural martial arts, they just have to settle down and do some out-of-theme intensive training.

Also, consider that Eclipse caste Solars and their analogues can learn Attribute based charms, and must meet the minimum Attributes to do so.

Was anybody else amazed by this charm? I really love it, but it makes even blade style a lot better than even the solar melee tree (especially since they've got that scene length counter attack). This seems like a strange choice to me.

That's just because Even Blade Style is one of the most awesome Terrestrial Martial Arts, not any flaw in Solar Melee.

Admittedly, Chaowin Registrophe's school's two pinnacles, and the ultimate pinnacle for Zu Rat Te, are the best things ever in some ways.

I wouldn't pit anything below the pinnacles against solar melee though. Well... except gruesome wood king. That oughtta be an effect Dawns get somewhere. Why isn't there a might-bolstering blow for solars? Maybe as an overdrive charm now that we have those? Eh, no huge big with the new overdrive stuff anyway. At least there is a way to get the effect for solars at solar level.

Yeah, some of the stuff from Scroll of the Monk is somewhat different from what you'd expect at that level- Wood King is actually better than Ravening Mouth of Melee in some situations.
