The Mission Statement
PROJECT TARTARUS is a conservation project, dedicated to colonising solar systems with habitable planets as a method of preserving mankind. Facing the probability of a growing extinction event, an international council was formed in the belief that select groups of genetically diverse colonists could restart civilisation with greater success and greater understanding of sustainability. All ships hold a capacity between 2,000 to 10,000 colonists, with the largest of all ships being THE HELIOS destined for Proxima Centauri.
These ships, designated ARK type vessels, are equipped with GREENSHOOT packs. These hold viable seeds, building materials, tools, weapons of self defence against hostile fauna and sustainably powered wind and solar generators for systems after the mothership's nuclear generator eventually fades out. Information on how to turn the engine rooms into a containment sarcophagus is available to the captain and crew as future understanding dictates.
You have been selected for this program by the PROJECT TARTARUS system as being a candidate of good genetic diversity, colony employability of your skills, and social cohesion.
Are you prepared for a future among the stars?
Faster than Light Travel:
The Alcubierre skip driveβs potential as an obtainable form of faster than light travel was realised by the Swiss quantum physicist Nikolas Kaufmann in 2157 AD. It outlined itself as changing the geometry of space by creating a wave that would cause the fabric of space ahead of a spacecraft to contract and the space behind it to expand. The ship would then ride this wave inside a region of flat space, known as a βwarp bubbleβ, and would not move within this bubble but instead be carried along as the region itself moved due to the actions of the drive.
The local velocity relative to the deformed space-time would be subluminal, but the speed at which a spacecraft could move would be superluminal, thereby rendering possible interstellar flight, accomplished by the following ARK ships in the following re-homing efforts of earth.
It would, nevertheless, be partially limited by two factors:
- The object skipping must not be near a major gravity well.
- The object skipping cannot skip out too far, thus causing the journey to be completed as if a pebble skimming the surface of a lake.
Robotics, Machine Learning & The Advent of AI:Spearheaded by the IBM corporation, artificial intelligence was proven to be a reality in the year 2077, at last deviating from machine learning to full consciousness. With a growing unemployment crisis, one that has long reached boiling-point, humans have never been entirely at peace with their shiny chrome counterparts. Opinion varies, though still the question remainsβ βwhat is of more value? The life of a man? Or his creation?
Bots β Non-humanoid robotics (UNPLAYABLE)
- Warehouse workers, labourers (Machine Learning)
- Incredibly basic robots that often appear unhuman. Whether this be some mixture of wheels and automated limbs, a quadruped design, or simply automated machinery. Bots suffer no consciousness albeit work on their programmed schedules and responses. If the world were to end, the warehouses would still be stocked by these diligent metal subjects.
Androids β Humanoid robotics (PLAYABLE)
- Admin/front facing roles to make citizens comfortable (Machine learning and low AI, though some have managed to evolve full consciousness)
- Crafted from steel and chrome, Androids differ in their vague to lifelike representations of mankind. Relatively advanced, dexterous and utilised for both front of house operations, as well as combat operations, they form the main bulk of all robotics worldwide. Powered by compact nuclear fusion batteries, Androids can maintain operations for centuries if carefully maintained. On earth, however, this is not the case, as the high amount of nuclear cell waste areas have played havoc with the environment.
Synthetics β Nigh-indistinguishable from humans (PLAYABLE)
- Highly specialised roles/ships officers, probability forecasters, scientists, etc. (Fully AI, conscious, and considered an intelligent lifeform, though perhaps not given the same rights as biologicals.)
- With titanium skeletons, textile flesh, and lab-grown bio-robotic elements, Synthetics appear increasingly human with every iteration. Able to process solar energy through modified skin cells, Synthetics rarely have need for docking stations or traditional power sources. A Synth can grow hair, nails, and the plasma replacement for blood utilised by engineers is coloured a syrupy red for subterfuge to avoid detection, and eliminating distrust by acting upon human empathy. However, Synthetics possess an almost iridescent sheen to their complexions, as well as mechanised eyes not so different from that of cyborg technology.
Modified Humans/Cyborgs β Spliced Humans (PLAYABLE)
- While genetic modification laws remain a grey area for ethics, instances of treatments for soldiers, astronauts and the elite to better survive off-world conditions and the failing earth environment are common. Within moderation, some of the most popular are as listed: Greater bone density, improved healing, ease in building muscle mass, pronounced capacity for low oxygen atmospheres etc.
- The cyber-age, likewise, has improved life for mankind β if you can afford it. These robotic enhancements can be linked to the nervous system as self-powered devices, including but not limited to: Limbs, vision, and hearing. Most devices are capped at an extreme of 3, after which their functionality becomes impaired and rejection of the devices becomes a steady incline.
BHASKARA I-A
BHASKARA I-A is a temperate planet in the Andromeda Galaxy, acting as part of a solar system named HH4 that gravitates around a yellow dwarf star.
With a slightly denser atmosphere than Earth, though rich in oxygen and safe to breathe, whether or not human life is compatible with the microorganisms is up for experimentation. THE ECHO is currently located in the warmer southern hemisphere of the planet, filled with a jungle-like ecosystem and nutrient dense soil.
