PROJECT TARTARUS
INTEREST CHECK
INTRODUCTION.Mankind has always yearned for the cosmos. Their heads upturned to the night sky for means of navigation, study, and awe. To have named the first brave journeymen Astronauts, conceiving them as sailors on an ocean of stars, it proved to be a modern fantasy that one could board a ship into the heavens and witness the fragility of life with the view of something that had dangerously outgrown the constraints of God. A blue-green planet pulled into orbit around a young star, prime for life.
Yet there were those more interested in profit than the sanctity of nature.
As of 2300 AD, Earth has long passed the 3rd millennium, welcoming in the 24th century at the height of its resource wars. Thick, black smoke from the fighting has worsened the already irreparable air quality, farmlands turning barren in the heat of a warming planet. With most of the Amazon decimated, alongside sea levels submerging coastal cities and towns, food resources running thin with overpopulation; the human race find themselves in the last days of their own extinction.
Where else to look but up?
An international council concerning the survival of mankind was broached with means to colonise other planets in distant systems as well as our own. These ships, designated as ARK type vessels, were the first to utilise the Alcubierre skip drive as an experimental technology for deep space travel.
One of these initial ARKS, named THE EURYDICE left for a terraforming project on mars in 2199 AD, followed by THE HELIOS destined for Proxima Centauri in the year 2213 AD. Both missions were a resounding success, encouraging a new space age with hopes of a future among the stars.
However with more ships being produced, and fewer materials to do it with, rumours circulated about government projects taking advantage of upward-bound men and women of lower social stature in such close confines. Psychological and physical data taken, as well as an increasing amount of failures. Horror stories still crop up concerning the lost ship THE ROOSEVELT, lost in early 2244 AD.
This will be the last wave of colonists leaving Earth. The last ARK, named THE ECHO.
Fully equipped to hold 5000 colonists of maximum genetic diversity in cryosleep, as well as a skeleton crew of 50 ensuring no possibility of system failure, the journey is estimated to take 25 years to reach an identified goldilocks planet named BHASKARA I-A in the Andromeda galaxy.
Yet what happened to THE ECHO was much like THE ROOSEVELT, falling radio silent in a catastrophic failure of life support systems that killed 93% of all colonists.
Awaking in the wreck of THE ECHO as the automated systems of the ARK thaws you from 25 years rest, the crew are all but dead. What killed the captain and those who would form the leadership of the new colony? What secrets does this brave new world hold? And who can show the remnants of THE ECHO a life of prosperity?
RULES.
- RPN rules apply! Please adhere to these on and off-site
- Discord is necessary for OOC
- This RP will be 18+
- No godmodding, no arguing ooc, no misbehaving! IC stays IC, don't bring it OOC!
- This is a LITERATE roleplay. Please don't join if you're unable to keep up with posting requirements.
PERSONNEL.While there won't be specific roles for the roleplay, feel free to play off of these divisons! Try not to overwhelm one particular group, or I'll manually try to redistribute!
LABOURER. While on Earth robots have taken over much of the human roles in active labouring, the colony ships have ensured skilled craftspeople to accompany the colonists in an effort to avoid overreliance on technology. From farmers to carpenters, gunsmiths to clockmakers.
SOCIAL/ADMIN. Is your forte working with people? A therapist? Psychologist? Or have you just got a knack for organising human resources and their subsequent complaints? Keep an eye on the stock levels, your fellow colonists, and try not to overstep your own importance.
SCIENTIST. Whether its studying the climate, the chemical make-up of extraterrestrial soil, or getting familiar with the flora and fauna, scientists are what ought to make this venture safe. Utilising research and knowledge to take care of your fellow colonists. There's no ulterior motives ... are there?
SECURITY. To prevent mutiny and protect the colonists from aggressive fauna (or flora!), these men and women are the top of their game. Ex-military, police, or otherwise, the peacekeepers are charged with maintaining law and order. Lest they be persuaded otherwise.
MEDICAL. Medical personnel ranging from first aiders to doctors, surgeons, and nurses. Charged with keeping the colonists healthy, happy, and preventing tragedy. The inevitable can be battled, but make no promise on winning.
