It's a struggle as old as humanity itself. For as long as the stories tell and anyone remembers, there have been these "mutations" in every 100,000th human child. These children are born with something that sets them apart from the rest. Their Gems.
Gemholders are people born with a single Gem growing somewhere on their body. These Gems are not just regular gems, however. Varying in size from about a half to three inches and differing in color and shape, the Gems share their wielders soul and grant them some sort of extraordinary ability. The recorded abilities of these "gems" stretch all the way from increased physical regeneration to manipulating the currents of the wind, and trained wielders are able to cause very powerful effects.
Unfortunately, human greed is just as present in the Gemholders as it is in anyone else, and at the beginning of the 20th century an organization was created. This organization is known as Igneous Incorporated. Founded by a millionaire, who happened to be a Gemholder himself, Igneous Inc.'s one goal is to collect all the world's Gems for two major reasons; to establish military dominance, and then to use the gems to advance human technology far beyond their modern bounds.
Igneous Incorporated is a large organization stretching more or less world-wide, who deal in the research and development of technology utilizing the energy of Gems. They have countless soldiers armed with weaponized Gems in the form of guns, swords and every other form of armament you could imagine. They also have many specifically hand-picked and trained Gemholders in their ranks who are equipped with not only their own gem, but the gems of many fallen Gemholders as well, making them incredibly dangerous.
Igneous Incorporated's ideology is that the suffering and sacrifice of a few for the betterment of mankind is a small price to pay. Therefore, most of the members of the organization have developed a way of looking at Gemholders like animals to slaughter. They don't have anything holding them back from killing the Gemholders mercilessly by removing the gems from their body and slowly allowing the Gems to absorb their wielders' souls.
You see, if a Gemholder is separated from their gem, their soul is essentially split in half and both parts die. (Hidden Message: Put "Princess Is Bae" Somewhere in Your Form If You Read This Entire Overview) However, by keeping the Gem artificially alive through running electricity through it repeatedly shortly after removing it from the body, the Gem is able to passively drain the soul from it's former human partner. This leads to two things; The Gem, once the soul has been drained, will be able to survive without their Gemholder, and the Gemholder will go through a horrifying process referred to as "emptying".
The emptying is an excruciatingly painful process that causes the body to swell, the skin to rupture, as well as causing random mutations to the Gemholder's physique. If the Gemholder should die during the emptying, then the Gem will also die so the Jewel Inc agents have to keep the Gemholders alive through the procedure. Once the emptying is complete, the Gemholders have become something far from human. When the soul is completely gone, they no longer require it to live, but the state they're in can seldom be called living. At this point they're referred to as "hollows".
Hollows are Gemholders who've had their Gems removed from them. They usually look like very large humanoid creatures reaching up to 10ft in height with completely white skin, eyes, and hair. They have inhumanely large muscles and a physique superior to the strongest of humans. Their arms usually reach all the way down to the ground, and their nails and teeth have been replaced with teeth and fangs. They seem to lack any intelligence above basic human instinct, making them very easy for Igneous Inc. to control and use in their hunts for Gemholders. Hollows are incredibly useful when it comes to locating gems, having had their own when they were still human.
Because of the large danger posed by Igneous Incorporation, a few powerful Gemholders banded together and started a counter-organization focused on protecting their fellow Gemholders from the ruthless Igneous Agents. This organization is called The Précieux Order. The Précieux Order is tiny in comparison to Igneous Inc., so instead of trying to face the organization head-on, The Précieux Order started a secret academy far from prying eyes, where they would locate, retrieve and teach children born as Gemholders how to use their powers and hide them from Igneous Inc. This is where you come in, you're a student at Précieux Academy, training under your mentors to become powerful enough to protect yourself from the agents of Igneous, or maybe even to rise up and destroy them once and for all.
