Post Question

I just was curious... What's the purpose of the post count? I can see where it would be interesting to know, but it doesn't really say a lot about the person's activity because it could be inflated by many small posts or decreased from always talking PMs over threads. Apparently this former was a reason for not allowing forum games before a special no-count section was added, which implies that people did try to beef up their counts with these games, but why? Is it like a ranking or prestige thing? Anyway, it isn't a burning question or anything, I just was wondering... (:

Hey @AlbaGuBrath!

The biggest use for post count for us is the ten post/twenty-four hour rule that people have to accommodate before they can access, say, PMs and the sort. Overall, it doesn't serve much purpose, but I imagine it's one of the basic things that Xenoforo forums come with, just as you would see on something like proboards. It's helpful for Dwiz for statistical purposes so that we have a better idea of what time the forum is most active, if the site is growing or staling, because ultimately it's forum activity that helps us grow, gives the site better trafficking via Google and what not. As for member use... it's more of a... I'm forgetting the word, but I suppose to a lot of people having a high post count just kind of "looks nice," and if you have enough posts, you may very well bump yourself up to being displayed here. But yeah like you don't get any special privileges for having a high post count or anything. Does that make sense at all?

What @Pine didn't say, is that we also use the ten post rule to filter out spambots. And booooy, do we get a lot of those...

What are those? I mean, I can guess from the name, but what would they be doing on a roleplaying site? All I could guess would be like advertising or something, maybe?

Oops, that's what I meant to say with the ten post thing LOL. Spambots will be spambots, and we honestly get like two or three trying to come in each day? Just about. I haven't tried clicking any links but yeah, either advertising some product or spreading viruses wherever they can, and the effect of that depends on the virus I suppose. Either way, we don't want them having access to PMs and compromising our user security any way, so that's a large part of why we restrict PMs and stuff and require links to go through the moderation queue for a little while.
