  • Esther R. Sophys

    August 12th, ~10:15 A.M.

*~Bzt~* Dhelmise, the Sea Creeper Pokémon. A Grass & Ghost type. The soul of seaweed adrift in the waves became reborn as this Pokémon. It maintains itself with new infusions of seabed detritus and seaweed. The anchor Dhelmise throws around can stretch outward for hundreds of yards, is powerful enough to smash rocks, and can KO Wailord in a single blow.

    “Wo~ow, that’s a big boy.”
Esther wet her lips with a triplet of ponderous smacks. So-called type specialists really loved to run everything except their stated (read assumed) type. However, despite its impressive size—
“Do we just…hang off its anchor? How does this work?”

Curiosity aside, Dhelmise-riding wasn’t in the cards for Esther. She didn’t want the easiest path up the mountain, but rather the one that let her engage with her Pokémon the most. It only took a moment for Esther to switch to her boots and fasten her crampons. She also donned her winter jacket since, with her hands occupied by the climbing, the jacket’s hood was the next best place to perch Istha.

“Thanks for the offer, but I think I’ve got this. I’ll race ya?”

Thankfully, Mt. Lanakila’s incline wasn’t the steepest. Although Çiera had soon faced trouble, lack of arms and all, the rest of Esther’s Pokémon could traverse the mountain as if it were flat land. Pyrrha especially proved an adept climber, her claws finding steady purchase between cracks and small crevices.

It only took a few minutes for Esther to deduce the optimal configuration for mountain side trekking: Çiera sat steady on her head; Istha watched the landscape from the comfort of her hood; Jecroix floated at her back, his strings looped through her backpack to share the load; Susu scouted ahead and altered her to bad footholds or potential pitfalls; and, her rope was secure around her waist, pulled along by Pyrrha and Halay.

In like manner, she moved—no, parkoured—with almost comical ease. A nearby pillar of stones had been completely doused in water, that was Susu’s signal for—
    “Crevice ahead!”
After a holler to her companions, Esther sped up: a brisk walk, then a jog, then a full blown sprint. The crevice came into view, a few meters wide—an impossible jump—or at least, it should’ve been! But Esther was a high-flying, crevice-clearing, poké-powered long-jumper.

Jecroix inflated, the Drifloon more than doubling in size. Halay & Pyrrha raced ahead, the Pokémon easily able to make the jump. Esther tightened her hood—
    “Hang tight!”
    —quickened her steps and JUMPED!

Ropes went taunt as Pyrrha and Halay pulled, Esther’s heart thumped in her ears.
    “Tailwind!”

A sudden squall pushed her up, up, and into a snow pile on the other side of the crevice.

    “Mffhinehhate”

A lick of fire freed the buried girl, and she wriggled herself out of the snow. The temperature had taken another dip a few minutes back as the group moved from the sparsely vegetated base of the mountain to the snow-capped lead-up into the peaks. They were still a distance from the peak itself, but this was a welcome sign of progress.

“Hey, looks like there’s someone up ahead. AHOY, Stranger!”

August 12th, Mount Lanakila

Saiun, now having placed herself a bit away from the clearing to avoid any more close counters with sledders, was casually tossing around a lone berry. Her group was peacefully minding their own business by eating, yet the interested Nobu was constantly trying to grab for the little fruit she held in her hand. Should've brought something warm for myself to drink maybe, but...Saiun was sure she would soon either go up more to the peak of the mountain, or just leave entirely after this-the choice was hers.

Her ears were now muffled slightly, with ear muffs cuffing them away so she could feel warmth in her skin again. Even if Saiun could easily bug her Pokemon to help out, she still brought proper wear. However, when climbing, heavy stuff does tend to get in the way. The sudden sound of getting catapulted into the sky-like a soft hum maybe?-caused her to look up instinctively. But nothing was there. Did I imagine that whistling noise?

“Hey, looks like there’s someone up ahead. AHOY, Stranger!”

Feet trudging along while gathering footprints into the snow, a girl was approaching Saiun as if she was some kind of merchant. The other trainer looked a bit helpless, to her at least. When she tried to stand, Yuu also rose as if wondering what was happening. Saiun shook her head. I just want to train my Pokémon, what's with the interruptions?!

"
Pleasant seeing...quite another person around here. I prefer to be called Saiun rather than 'stranger'," She tilted her head to the side, "What a party you have back there."

"...What do you mean 'how it works'?" Altair glanced at Esther with a side-eye and responded somewhat sarcastically, he wasn't sure if she was serious or not with the question. He gestured at G climbing onto the Pokemon's frame and gently tapped the anchor with his foot, he thought those acts were self-explanatory.

Though Esther seemed not super interested regardless, as she dashed off, even saying something about making it a race. Altair sighed and patted the ghost-grass type. "Nuh uh, slow and steady, alright? Safety first." He knew that Mobi wasn't the type of Pokemon who'd take challenges like that seriously, but he wanted to reassure them since they always had some self-confidence issues. Although the mention of any potential dangers seems to have startled G.

"Well, it's still the area that league-ready trainers come to train. Anything's possible, especially since it's not even league season." He replied to the girl's startled comments. "And besides, I thought you wanted an ice stone, things like that don't just lie around in chartered territories."

The large, ghostly Pokemon slowly floated up the mountain, slowing down a bit when the cliffs got steep and using their thick metal chain to pull themselves up occasionally.

"So...you prefer tea or coffee?" There was a bit of water boiling on a hot plate. As the anchor slowly rose up Altair set out a hot plate on the metallic parts of the Pokemon, taking care to not have it get too close to any of the seaweed tendrils. A cable extended out from the device, with its end being clasps that were positioned on Togedemaru's tail.

"You know, just because you got beaten by it doesn't mean it'll always work." Altair said half-heartedly responding to G's earlier comment. "There's plenty of ways around it, some Pokemon are immune to it, or just get lucky. I wouldn't use it when there's actual danger, not life or death for sure...that's like gambling with your life isn't it." Before the conversation could continue, there seemed to be a silhouette of another person on the mountain range. Well, if they didn't notice the person, then Esther's distance shouting would've alerted them to the presence anyway.

Mobi shook off the bits of snow that have landed on their tendrils and anchor frame before following the direction of the shout and gently gliding down towards the area where Esther and another person, likely a trainer judging from the Pokemon around, have encountered each other.

"Oh, hi there." Altair stepped off the Pokemon and nodded towards the stranger, he thought he overheard a name, but it wasn't that clear in the slightly chilly winds of the mountain trail. Togedemaru followed, jumping off the anchor Pokemon, with the hot plate balanced on his head. "Right...I would be asking if you prefer tea or coffee, but it seems like you got that covered more than me." He nodded towards the fire-type Pokemon that the trainer had.

Altair was some sort of hidden genius or something. But the fact that he had been able to heat up tea on the way up a mountain?! There's a reason he was her sensei. G enjoyed her cup of tea with a sense of peace flowing through her, ignoring the fact that Altair had not guaranteed their safety, but then again, who cares. They had survived plenty before, they could do it again. She jumped off the giant anchor and tapped it a few times to thank it for its service. "Thank you Moby!"

G skipped along to get with the group, sipping her warm beverage. "Hi! My name's G, nice to meet- O-M-G what Pokemon are those?" G pointed at the Blaziken (and Incineroar if it's out). "Sorry, never seen them before. Nice to meet you!"

“Well then, Saiun—Howdy! What brings you all the way up here?”

Mt. Lanakila was a tourist trap, but they were more than a stone’s throw away from the beaten path and Esther and her ‘party’ really shouldn’t have expected to run across anyone in these desolate parts. Speaking of her party,
“Tea? You sure are living it up.”
Evidently, neither Altair nor G were really in the business of winter wonderland fun.

Esther popped the cap on her water-bottle and took a deep swig. Even with a helping string from JeCroix, Esther could feel the fire in her legs. The desire for a ride Pokémon once more reared its envious head. Halay was getting pretty big, if she evolved then she could definitely carry Esther and then some, no? Future Esther would enjoy that, but present Esther had no recourse.

Saiun nodded a greeting to the following traveling trainers that came right after the one she had been speaking to. A girl with black hair and blue tendrils at the bottom pointed out something of not ever seeing her fire-type Pokemon. She glanced back with a judging expression, before reluctantly replying back. (The three she was training with are all still out)

"Well then...G, this is my Incineroar, Blaziken, and Talonflame. However I do keep names for them. Pleasure to meet you too," I suppose. Yuu gave a small demonstration of a fist bump to the girl trainer, like a welcome that did not align with Saiun's plans.

Coffee? Tea? Someone had brought it up, but now Saiun was really being thrown out into the dump. Gifted she had just been thinking of drinking hot chocolate or some milk almost caused her to act like a child that lost their electronic. Except, she paused her actions and instead bitterly bent down to cradle Nobu back into her arms like some kind of comfort bear.

"For your question," Saiun nodded to the one she met first, "I came up here not having any other plans but training my Pokémon...but when one situation collides with another...I end up having a problem. I'm looking out for a later on gym battle, so I don't fail completely before someone's eyes. It's a bit embarrassing, so I'd rather avoid it. What about you? I haven't caught yours, nor his-" A finger towards the white haired dude,"-name."

"Thanks Mobi, it's a bit cold out here for you isn't it." Altair turned around and recalled his Dhelmise, as the grass type probably didn't appreciate being out in the snowy mountains for too long. After the group inched closer to the trainer, a woman with dark hair and red eyes, she responded rather courteously to the question posed by the most...energetic of their group. Training Pokemon huh, well, it wasn't like he expected much else from the look of things. He wondered if it was considered hard training or easy training if you train your fire types on an icy mountain, the environment was pretty harsh, but your Pokemon did have a type advantage.

"I'm Altair, your average trainer, I suppose. I am her-" Altair nodded towards G, making sure to make it clear who he was talking about "-guide, mentor, something like that. Make sure she doesn't die out here and all that." He finished, but not before adding another bit while tilting his head towards Esther a bit, "I don't really know her though, we sorta just ran into her." The young man shrugged casually after finishing the quick explanation.

Afterwards, he can't help but notice that the fire-type trainer, Saiun's words were pretty vague. Though it was clear she was here to train her Pokemon, the other stuff seemed pretty wishiwashi, though Altair didn't like to pry into other people's business. "Gym huh...? You sure came out a long way to train for a gym battle, considering...you know," He vaguely gestured towards the Alola travel brochure he was reading and the direction of the Pokemon League up the mountain, "Alola doesn't really have those."

Interesting, Altair; the casual trainer that knows how to joke in the most worst possible times. What a great Pokedex entry. Now she couldn't just hate on him so quickly, but she did take first impressions harshly.

"If you stick too close to your apprentice, she'll never learn how to fend for herself. But it is what it is," Saiun looked between him and G again. She had expected all three of them to know each other, but that clearly wasn't the case. Who knew one could earn lively companions just by sharing a similar goal. "It's not that I came here to train just for a Gym Battle. I've been raised-or at least, visiting Alola for most of my life. The last thing I need to check off is 'training under harsh conditions' or whatever, so long it benefits my side.

I'm of course not going to battle a Gym Leader here either, if that was what you're thinking. I'm staying here for possibly a week or so, before back to moving elsewhere. Not everything should be assumed, you know," Saiun gave a quirk of an eye brow.

G gave Altair a worried look upon hearing Saiun's comments. She had been in Alola for about week on her before Altair arrived, but mostly it had been them traveling together. She could survive on her own in most areas. But learning from Altair was a big benefit, like maybe get a Pokemon with Taunt. Besides she didn't fully depend on him, she did have a big Steelix waiting for her. In fact, she should start training with it any day now! G looked back at the scary lady, her Pokemon were impressive though, so she could back up her attitude.

"I was fending for myself, I invited him over to Alola because we're friends. He just happens to also be my mentor. But If I hadn't invited him over, I would still be here. I'm actually looking for an Ice Stone, seen any? Or if you know where I can find a fire type like your big cat, that would be cool too."

Altair was expressionless on the surface, but he naturally didn't get too good of an impression of the woman. She was purposely vague about her purpose, won't most people say the gym leader's name too when they speak of plans to challenge a gym? It was like she was fishing for assumptions. He sighed gently, who'd know that trainers who like to train all alone on snowy mountains get uppity about having conversations? (Sarcasm).

"...You say to not assume things, yet you assumed enough to give unsolicited advice about my role and our relation after one sentence." He replied sternly after G's worried comments. "She's right, I came here because...I needed a break from certain things. Alola is a well-versed vacation destination isn't it? Nothing wrong with helping out with her goals in the meantime."

"And of course I never thought anyone would do a gym battle here, but you must admit that it is at least question-worthy as to why someone is training for a gym battle in a region that has none."
Altair waved his hand for Togedemaru to run back and climb back onto his shoulder, he can't say the fire-type trainer was hostile, but she sure seemed like a handful. "Maybe people would make less assumptions if you'd explain things a bit better."

Light and fresh and with a little crunch to it. That was Esther’s assessment of Mt. Lanakila’s snow. An assessment she’d made after an accidental mouthful mere moments prior, and one that had set her mind to wonder. By some miracle, some gift of Arceus, the snow was fresh as could be. Perhaps this was just how snow was in high altitude topics in the later months of summer, or maybe they’d gotten lucky and chanced upon fresh but regardless of the reason, the opportunity brought a single question to the forefront of Esther’s mind.
”Think we can make snow cones with this snow?”

”Sorry, that was sudden. Where are my manners? I’m Esther.”
Although Altair and Saiun were really starting to get into their spat over nothing in particular, Esther chose that very moment to interject and course-correct.
”Have you been on Mt. Lanakila for a while? If so, might you know where we could find some local Pokémon? As G mentioned, we’re looking for ice stones and I figure the local Pokémon are our best lead.”

"...You say to not assume things, yet you assumed enough to give unsolicited advice about my role and our relation after one sentence."

"I didn't necessarily say I was tutoring you, I was just saying how I saw it through my own point of it. A statement," Saiun pursed her lips. "Apologies though, if you took my words the wrong way. What your relationship with G is none of my business, so I suppose I could've kept myself quiet then." She watched a small, round Pokémon return back to Altair just my a small hand gesture. Togedemaru? What a choice.

Her gaze drifted back to G, and then Esther, who seemed to be both talking about ice stones and whatever else. "I've had my fair share of snow and ice, but maybe not enough to clearly pinpoint what you need. I don't think I passed by any Pokémon, not from what my eyes have seen, but it would be rare to not find any. Most likely, as commonly known I guess, you're best solution would be wandering in one of the caves. If I had a different goal for today, coming onto Mount Lanakila, I probably would've gave a bit more, but I've honestly kept to myself the whole time."

Where to get a fire-type like my big-cat? Saiun rested her chin on the top of Nobu's head, biting her cheek. "Well, to be fair, Littens are often just labeled as the starter Pokémon for Alola, so it's a so-and-so situation on trying to get one. They stray as loners, so it depends on how you approach them on the surface. Typically for just Fire-Types, on the other hand though, Alola's Wela Volcano Park will you do you good."

"Of course, another dangerous mountain to climb." G sighed. "Why is it always a mountain? Why can't it be like, a casino, some scientific lab or a power plant, I dunno, something with security measures. No, it has to be a place where one wrong step and you might actually die."

G starts to walk up the mountain more. "Well, you heard the nice lady, find a cave! You coming, Saiun? I want to learn more about your fire Pokemon, they are so cool! Like, do they actually eat fire? Or do they have a special diet? What about their workouts? My Pokemon usually do that on their own. But besides my Golduck, they're still babies. We're working on that though. My little Vanilla is the one that needs the ice stone. My Snom has an EXP. Share but so far she doesn't want to evolve, she's really chubby though, it's cute!" She flipped her backpack from her back to her front side. She reached inside and took out the Snom wearing the experience headset.

"See? Her name is Puddin. I also have a Sneasel and a Metang, wait no, Beldum! Oh and this really big Steelix we caught in Iron Island, but he won't listen to me."

    “Caves….makes sense.”
Esther pursed her lips; if they were delving into the caves, then it was better to forewarn themselves of the possible dangers. For that, the pokédex was a limitless font of knowledge.
    “Let’s see what we’re dealing with…”

”*~BZT~ The Icy Caves of Mt. Lanakila provide habits for a diverse group of Pokémon: Zubat, Snesel, Absol, Snorunt, Drampa, Vanillish, Castfom, and Larvitar, as well as the Alolan forms of Sandshrew, Rattata and Vulpix and all their respective evolutions.”

Of the listed Pokémon only Absol stood out to Esther. If they were anywhere near as strong or as fast as Oracle, then they might pose a challenge.
“Any of those sound like a problem to y’all? Hey Altair, think you can Parafusion us out of any trouble?”
She obviously didn’t expect an answer since Esther had folded her arms over her head and was already heading further up the mountain.

“Well? We’d better get a move-on, feel free to tag along Ms. Saiun.”

"Hmm." Altair sighed as the fire type using woman gave a small apology, he didn't exactly expect that. Perhaps she was more so just bad with words rather than aggressive. "Whatever, I don't know a thing about teaching anyways, so I suppose you're not wrong." He said halfheartedly while looking outwards into the snowy mountainscape.

G was giving her grievances about the wilderness like always while playing with her Snom. "...Ice types don't live in that sort of place though." He responded quietly to her somewhat rhetorical question. "Maybe except that- Uh, well, actually, nevermind." Altair did recall a more 'manmade' place that had ice types during his childhood, but that place is long gone now.

Esther was at least doing something practical as she was researching the wild Pokemon commonly sited around the area. "...No. Or at least, not unless someone does something extraordinarily stupid. Weaviles hunt in packs after all." He responded to the question, or at least the first half of it before crossing his arms, closing his eyes as if lost in thought (or just needed a break) and adding more. "But I'm not using that, I've got other Pokemon you know." Altair opened one eye and glanced at Esther, then a little to G as well. "That's just a 'fun' little tactic for unserious tournaments, it doesn't always work and isn't suited for wild Pokemon. Unless you feel good about literally gambling with your life."

"Well, you heard the nice lady, find a cave! You coming, Saiun?"

Saiun couldn't tell whether G was just forgetting Saiun wasn't in her group, or if she was actually being invited. Either way, she wanted to quickly shake her head. However, she had nothing else to spend her day. Taking a ride out of the region was boring-especially since the day had so much more to give, and for some reason her inner childhood demon wanted to follow the few people she had just met now.

"I want to learn more about your fire Pokémon, they are so cool! Like, do they actually eat fire? Or do they have a special diet? What about their workouts? My Pokémon usually do that on their own."

"Any Pokémon can be cool, so long you aren't used to it," Saiun pointed out. "But I feel bad for you, because whoever told you Fire-Types eat fire, is a liar. If you meant how they absorb it...then that's alright. Their diet mostly remains to stick with things that are high in energy or with ones that produce heat. Sometimes these pyro munchers can end up having uncooked things, simply because their bodies can give off the warmth inside to cook it up. It's...a very weird process. You can throw a hot pepper to any of them, and take it down like it was candy.

So long you can have your Pokémon 'take out their energy' through sprints, battles, and even what I was doing before with my own, there can't be much of a difference than to one with a different typing."
Basically taking a dog for a walk, except, Pokémon aren't pets in this scenario.

“Well? We’d better get a move-on, feel free to tag along Ms. Saiun.”

Saiun whistled out a simple, "Noted," in reply, taking out a few Poke-Balls to return her Pokemon; excluding her Pancham. If she was decidedly going to be walking around with this lot, she didn't want to keep her team out for no particular reason, especially if they aren't easier to carry just as is.

Unserious!?
OH. NO. HE. DIDN’T! Esther’s eyes narrowed, a hitch in her steps betraying a near-about face. Swallowing her indignation, the Oblivian pressed on with a silence harrumph.
Just you wait, I’ll get your ass sooner or later…

Now Esther typically wasn’t one to speak with authority on Pokémon, but as the conversation between G & Saiun turned to fire-types and their internal flames, her eyes lit up. With a sweet caress of short, dark fur, Esther interjected.
”Oh! I actually know this one. Most fire types have their own special way of maintaining an internal flame of a quick way of producing flames. For example, Halay here stores a chemical mix in her body which she can ignite to produce flames—I haven’t double checked with any scientists or anything, but my guess is that those chemicals are the reason for Houndour noxious flames and why Houndoom burns are infamously difficult to heal. It also explains their propensity for poison type moves!”

“By the by, I heard that Mt. Lanakila sometimes erupts with slow and sedate lava flows, making it a popular spot for volcano surfing—you know, surfing down the side of active volcanoes?—Does that have anything to do with why you’re here instead of…y’know, the Wela Volcano?”

G nodded along as the two broke into conversation about fire types. G knew how to manage her Pokemon and she knew adding new ones to her team would involve her studying up on them, but at that moment. She wasn't in the mood. She stepped back to Altair's side and took a hold of his arm. "If I fall, you're coming with me." She smirked as her icy blue eyes set on him. "So, how do I feed a Steelix? Are you ever going to help me be strong enough to use it?"

She held out her free hand. "I have obtained two steel types, one that if I remember, can't do much besides use Take Down and another that will probably Slam me into the sky as soon as it sees me. Then I have a steel type mentor and somehow I have made zero progress on those two. Which makes me think, you're slacking brotha!" She said in a teasing tone. "So, what's the plan sensei? Esther R. Sophys

August 12th, 10:25 A.M.

Fresh snow paved the way, a white carpet that rolled all the way to the summit. The snowcapped ascent as picturesque a scene as they came—but therein lay the problem.
“Where are all the DAMN Pokémon?!”
Hands were thrown every which way and Esther wore a pout as the first of her Pokémon returned from o’er yonder.

Sliding across the snow, who else could it be but—
“Susu! Any luck?”
The water-strider skittled and scuttled, an interpretive jigs which Esther translated as—
“No? Drats!”

Even with forward scouts, this search was proving to be rather difficult.

“Saiun, did you scare them all off?!”
No matter how far she trekked or how wide her Pokémon searched, Esther found neither fur nor scale nor claw nor tail. It was almost as if the mountain were barren. That couldn’t be the case, right?

A sharp bark cut through the despair and Esther turned her eyes to the second of her returning Pokémon. She didn’t even need to ask. Without a word, Halay turn on her heels and bound into the snow. Esther’s eyes lit up, a new energy in her steps as she followed in hot pursuit.

“Oh! She found something! After her!”

As it turns out, their destination wasn't far. Not even a few minutes run and Halay had led them to an icy cave that depressed the mountain side. The gaping maw stood out against the otherwise uniform snow of Mt. Lanakila, but even more so than that was the strange residue found at the cave's lip. Esther bent down to investigate, rolling coarse grains between her fingers.

“Huh? Is this...sand?”

Trainer 206!
August 12th, Mount Lanakila

Surfing on the sides of active volcanoes? "I haven't had my share in actually practicing how to surf, much less in an area that is partly dangerous, but it was intriguing to find out about it when I was searching up some things that comes on Mount Lanakila. The other reason that I'm not there, is because I already went there. That's why I offered G that place."

Saiun kicked away at a lump of snow, unfortunately having the cold feeling of it seeping on the inside of her boot. The pain of winter was that nothing on your feet can necessarily be protected, no matter how thick it was, because air could travel in even the smallest of crevices. Esther was whining about not seeing anything breath taking at the moment, and she snorted. "Was patience left along the road?"

Altair and his mentee seemed to have started to drag backwards, talking about what sounded like future plans. Intending to not pry, she watched as a Surskit began communicating with it's trainer. Esther's accusation pointed at Saiun very quickly, but it was probably just a miniature tease. "Oh yeah, or maybe it's just by how loud you are." Yet, true alertness guided her when there was a soft howl and then several footsteps thumping along in a hurry. Esther was running away, and Saiun had no other choice but to keep up. Her nose wrinkled at the sight, when the group paused once more at a crystalized cavern. "It's always the caves, I tell you."

The group was talking about fire type Pokemon, Altair stood backend spaced out into the snowy landscape, as he didn't own a fire type Pokemon and did not plan on obtaining one either. But G spoke up again as she mentioned the Steelix she managed to capture at Iron Island, and her new Beldum. He glanced at her as the jumpy girl latched onto his arm while asking about her new Pokemon. Altair sighed slightly while raising his eyebrows. "Oh, you, uh, actually kept it?" He asked in a semi-surprised fashion regarding the Steelix, before refuting G's accusations. "There's different types of Pokemon, even in the same typing, okay? You wouldn't raise a Gyarados the same way you do a...Pyukumuku." He muttered while recalling the dark lumpy water Pokemon that laid around on Alolan beaches.

"Look, I actually don't know that much about Pokemon that live in caves, not all steel-type having trainers are cave-dwelling loners who quit their cushy corporate jobs to live in the mountains or something like that. That's just a stereotype perpetuated by irresponsible former champions." Altair rolled his eyes slightly at G's assertions, being unsure where to even start with giving advice to the girl before pausing as the group moved.

"...But you'd probably have to work on being a Pokemon trainer in general." After a few moments of thought, he continued despite the former exasperation. "This type of thing happens pretty often back when I was at school, you know. People would catch Pokemon that are really strong, they got lucky, or desperate, or whatever and ended up successfully catching them, but those strong Pokemon won't obey them because they weren't strong trainers." He shrugged while making the suggestion to G, as Togedemaru, one of the Pokemon Altair's colleagues gave to him because of its disobedience, climbed up the trainer's shoulder once more. "Pokemon are only strong as their trainers, in a way."

As the group moved towards...another cave, Altair began to wonder the cave-dwelling loner comment seemed hypocritical. But in his defence he was far from alone, even if in some cases he wished he was alone as Esther was shouting almost the entire way. "Either scared them off or pissed them off." He added dryly after Saiun's comment about the noise level. "Or you're gonna single-handedly cause an avalanche." Altair looked at the Houndour, wondering if it would be capable of helping in that case.

At the mouth of the cave, the source of the noise finally piped down for a moment as Altair waited by the cavern entrance with the others. "So are we gonna go in or-" He wanted to ask before Esther made an observation of the strange residue near the cave. Sand? It was a bit unusual for it to be in an icy area, but was it that strange? Altair wondered. Plenty of rock and ground types can make sand, and he vaguely remembered something about hard ice being able to grind stone into sand as well. "Sand in a cave? Colour me surprised." Altair responded sarcastically, but gazed into the cavern cautiously as usual, as the darkness of its interior contrasted the bright white snow outside. Togedemaru raised its tail and generated an electrical spark, trying to illuminate the inside.

G stood at the cave entrance with her group, sticking close to Altair. She had been in a similar situation before, twice. She could feel her gut telling her to prepare for whatever was about to happen. "I should've just bought the Ice Stone..." She said to herself. Esther pointing out the sand was interesting, at first. Then she heard Altair's comment on it and she brushed it off. Between a trainer at G's level and a veteran like Altair, she would rather go with his reasoning. Whatever it was.

"The only reason I will in there is because we have two strong trainers with us." G said in a low voice. "Also, last time I was in one, I caught two super cool Pokemon. Maybe I'll get lucky again." She stayed behind Altair though. "If something goes wrong, you're going to rescue me first, right?" She looked up at the white haired trainer. "I should have priority being your best friend and all."

You make one loud noise and suddenly everyone’s a critic.
Esther swung on her heels and leaned forward to answer her critics with a wild raspberry! Hmpf, how dare they complain? They hadn’t even sent out their own Pokémon to help! Esther curled her lips and swung her attention back to the cave. Typical naysayers! She couldn’t be bothered to deal with them.
If they were going spelunking… The snow crunched beneath Esther’s backpack as she discarded the weight.
“I’ll leave this here. Halay, Çiera and…Istha! I’ll leave you three here with my bag to stand guard. Keep an eye out for anything returning home, we don’t want to get snuck up on.”
Esther further wasn’t sure her three Pokémon companions were physically suited for cavern exploration. Paws, stubby legs and fins weren’t the best tools when the task involved potentially wet and slippery rocks.
The cave didn’t look particularly perilous but—
“That’s at least three death flags,”
she deadpanned in G’s direction. The Oblivian took her first steps into the cave; a tentative and cautious few as she felt for slippery spot of thinning ice. As she ventured further and her crampons held, her shoulders relaxed, and her steps firmed.
“Ooh! Almost forgot. Susu, be a darling and grab the flashlight from my bag.”

As the strider zipped back to the cave’s entrance, Esther peered deeper into the barely illuminated darkness. The sunlight dimmed as they traveled further from the cave’s entrance and while Togedemaru provided enough light to identify their surroundings, Esther figured they’d be better off with a flashlight that would allow them to see much further ahead.
“How many Ice Stones do you think we’ll find, any bets? Lunch says we find at least one.”
