Other Podcast Recommendations: Which ones do you enjoy listening to?

Outside of music, I’m usually listening to podcasts when I’m working, driving/in a commute, or doing something that doesn’t require my full attention. I was wondering if anyone has any good ones they love to listen to. Any particular series they’d recommend. I’m always looking for something new to try or interesting stories/commentaries/interviews to tune into.

Right now, I’m listening to Behind the Desk: The Story of Late Night. It’s interesting to hear a little bit about the history and the construction of late night talk/comedy shows from the host to the comedic writing/script/bits.

My current favorite is Trash Taste! It's hosted by three anime YouTubers that live in Japan, and I adore it. It's not only hilarious, but taught me a lot about living in Japan.

Ha ha. I love the self-deprecating humour of the title! Is it a fictional podcast about the lives of anime characters as Youtubers or is it about the real people behind VTubers? Either way, I agree that it’s a cool way to learn about another culture. I’ll add it to my list. Thanks!

It's just a bunch of guys! They each have their own channels mainly about anime. They legitimately got me interested in going to Japan!

Oh, I totally read/understood anime Youtuber as a Vtuber. Whoops! My bad. They still sound pretty cool though. But yeah, I think Japanese culture is super interesting outside of just anime. I think I’d want to learn more about the history and the just what it’s like to live there day to day.

It helped me because I was writing a Japanese character at the time and it helped me get a good feel for the culture. Damnit now I wanna write another Japanese character

Oh, what a fun and clever way to do research for an RP! That’s awesome! Hate to be an enabler, but I’d say go for it (if you can fit another character into your RPs). Kudos for diversifying outside your culture!

Maybe this new character can be from a different region so they’ll have different experiences from the one you currently have? Like maybe one from a more rural side or Japan or vice versa (make them more an urbanite) if you already have a character from the rural side of Japan. Either way, it sounds like a good idea!

Personally I love Okinawa and it's culture. It has this strange mixture of Japanese, American, and native culture and language I adore.

I’m afraid I’m not knowledgeable in the regional differences of Japan. Okinawa sounds like an interesting melting pot of cultures. Or maybe, it’s more along the lines of where East meets West. If I were to visit, I think I’d want to go north in Hokkaido. It seems like a beautiful place to visit and a little different from the bustling streets of Tokyo.

Mine at the moment is My Favorite Murder. The hosts are hilarious, which is a weird contrast to the fact that they talk about horrific mysteries and murder cases but it makes it easier to listen to things like that. Kinda like a discussion at the dinner table with friends rather than a spooky middle of the night 90s crime tv show that leaves you sleepless like forensic files lol

Oh, I love that! It’s like making the horror genre digestible for people who may not otherwise be into it. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love a good scare every once in a while, but good comedy horror is still very much an untapped genre at least imo. I’ll give them a listen to as well. On a random tangent, anyone looking for a good sleepy time podcast needs to listen to LeVar Burton Reads. I didn’t grow up with the Reading Rainbow, but now, I wish I did.

My favourite podcasts are Caustic Soda (I was crushed when they canceled it a few years back, but they cover a lot of topics ranging from evil people in history to epilepsy and elephants)
The other one is still ongoing and I listen to all the time, My Brother My Brother And Me is much more comedy focused.

"No Such Thing As A Fish" - each episode, all four hosts talk about their favourite fact that they have learned that week. Definitely silly rather than serious. Basically if you like trivia, weird facts, learning things and Banter™ then it's worth a listen. There are... a lot of episodes to choose from.

I'm still making my way through the backlog, but it's been very enjoyable so far (though the jokes don't always land for me)

Oh I just remembered something similar to this called the Magnus Archives! The jist is that it's the recordings of this guy who's hired to organize the archives of an organization responsible for understanding and containing supernatural threats. It has some of my favorite weird, horrifying interpretations of classic monsters, and they usually rely on common fears (fear of strangers, fear of leeches, fear of isolation, etc) to really hammer home just how horrifying these creatures are. I highly recommend checking it out, though I mean...I guess it's a podcast? It's definitely something you can listen to like a podcast, but it's scripted.

Scripted podcasts can be the best sometimes though! You might like The Bright Sessions (therapy sessions for people with supernatural powers). And Welcome to Night Vale is a classic, of course.

Haha I remember that. Although some of the jokes got a bit old lol. I do like that you could hear them nearly break character, like they were struggling not to laugh at some points which was very enjoyable.

I've been enjoying Noble Blood by Dana Schwartz, in which she tells the stories of different monarchs (or individuals of royal blood) from around the world. The history is interesting and her voice is soothing.

There's another podcast called "You're Wrong About" hosted by Sarah Marshall (and previously Michael Hobbes) that I tune into from time to time. They talk about maligned women in history, different phenomenon, true crime, and the "facts" about these different people and events that have been warped and misrepresented over time. Both hosts created their own spinoff podcasts that I also listen to, "You Are Good" and "Maintenance Phase". I will say, they do get heavy on the empathy, which I normally enjoy, but it can be a bit much in specific episodes.

i have to drive 2.5 hrs to pick up my weekly shop every weekend (living on a farm is GREAT!!! that 2.5 hrs is just driving to town - its a 2.5 hr drive back home too so 5 hrs all up) so i have a heap of time to listen to podcasts and audible! here are the podcasts ive been listening to in rotation (if i leave a (c) next to it, it means its a christian podcast/audible book sksksk)

✿ Office Ladies - Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey from the Office; they go through every single episode and break them down. I'm a massssive Office fan so this heaven for me.
✿ The Try Pod - The Try Guys from YouTube - general conversation + advice that goes for miles.
✿ You Can Sit With Us - The Try Guy's partners - general conversation
✿ Guilty Pleasures - Zach from the Try Guys - movie/tv reviews; they then discuss if the show/movie was guilty (really bad), a pleasure (really good) or a guilty pleasure (so bad that it's good)
✿ Two Hot Takes - Scavenging through Reddit stories and giving their two hot takes (for example "Am I The Asshole" stories)
✿ Human Hope with Carlos Whittaker (c) - Carlos leads us in conversation about finding hope in today's society
✿ Gotta Be Done - Two mums who are obsessed with the ABC tv show Bluey (we watch it at work with the kids!) go through and break each episode down. Talks a lot about childhood development which is my jam (I own a daycare centre)
✿ The Comment Section with Drew Afualo - If you have TikTok, you've seen Drew drag misogynistic men. She now has her own podcast show where she brings in guests to continue the dragging
✿ Worship Leader Probs (c) - As a worship leader at church, I feel it in my bones when they go through their segment of Prayer Concerns (an example of a 'prayer concern' they mentioned in one of their episodes: "i have left your church because you have too much technology and technology is satan!!! but this church I'm at now needs some new mics can we have your old ones")
✿ BibleProject (c) - Going through each book of the Bible and breaking them down. One of the hosts has a Masters in Languages (Hebrew) and gives us a great insight in original translations
✿ Honest Worship by Manuel Luz (c)
✿ Kill the Spider by Carlos Whittaker (c) - Even if you're not a Christian, I highly recommend this one!!

I will definitely be giving all The Try Guys recs a listen at work today. "Gotta Be Done" sounds so good as well! I have a lot of younger cousins that I often provide care for, and just in general I tend to enjoy anything focused on human development and emotions, so I'm sure that one will be very helpful.

Another recommendation I'd like to give is "Just Break Up" a relationship advice podcast that focuses on many different types of relationships (romantic, friendships, parental, environmental, etc.). Their main goal is helping with emotional intelligence and growth, and they deliver their answers with a lot of care and thought.

Most of mine are fandoms.

So if ya like Harry Potter, Once Upon a Time, Downton Abbey, Sailor Moon, or The Percy Jackson series I gotcha some recs.

But for the general category :

Spirits - a podcast about folklore and mythology by two drunken women (get it? Word play)

Movie Fighters - they find bad movies and fight them

God Awful Movies - same as above but for religious movies (they can be a bit off color so fair warning there)

Bechdel Cast - they review movies through a feminist lens.

But the one thing all of them have in common? Excellent consistent audio quality. I listen to podcasts during my work shift so it’s very hard to find audio I can hear without blasting my eardrums out.

These all have good quality audio that is consistent between hosts.
