This is just an idea I had a little while ago. Maybe it's worth trying.
After a calamity that wiped out 80% of the Earth's population, the remainder of the population was given a choice: adapt, or die. While many chose to adapt, a small handful of people tried to create a third option - a highly experimental "cold sleep" program. Essentially, the participants would enter a thousand year sleep in a secure bunker, and awaken when the world has improved.
40 Participants entered.
Over two millennia have passed, and the Earth has been reborn into one of natural beauty, and humanity has long forgotten the terror of the calamity. Technology has taken a large step backwards, but the population has grown again. Muse A, a curious soul, one day stumbles into the vault holding the 40 participants.
1 man remains.
Upon being awakened, Muse B asks a simple question:
"What year is it?"
Obviously, the plot can be more elaborate, and there can be romance. Emphasis on can.
