Rifleman

A Time of War
As the desert seemingly expands endlessly, the sun tatters down on the barren land without a cloud in the sky. Mountains scattered throughout the environment, with minimal shrub, as the image of life in the region was clearly bleak. The feeling of uneasiness in the air, as the hum of vehicle engines and tires spurning the sand echoed partially. The distance closed as the vehicles were clearly military, and heavily armored. Inside, four soldiers, sporting issued fatigues, weapons, and body armor, all heading towards what they think is just a routine patrol. These soldiers were not alone, as there was three others vehicles, all containing soldiers, willing to put their lives on the line for their country, or so they thought.
The vehicles halted slowly as a grisly scene opened up ahead as a pile of dead farmers and goats lay waste in the middle of the road sweltering under the sun. The doors opened slowly on the vehicles as the soldiers began to dismount, quickly scanning the area under threat of attack. There was a pause as the vehicle engines idled, then went quiet as they died slowly. The air was thin, windless, but it was hot, not humid, your typical desert weather, it was peaceful, finally. Hesitantly a soldier reaches for his radio, as he removes his shemagh and says out loud.
" Command, this is Hunter 1-4, we have a possible Road block, its not a pretty one, how copy over. "
The quaint sound of the radio dispatching the message hummed, as a voice rang out. A female voice that echoed through the soldiers ear.
" Copy that Hunter 1-4 , you are to..... "
The voice was cutoff quickly as the soldier lets out a quick gasp of air as the radio shot out of his hand, as a bullet pierces through and his the vehicle. The young man drops to his knees, then onto his stomach, as quickly he lay motionless. The other soldiers lay motionless to what just happened, as a man just dropped dead from thin air. The next moment, all hell breaks lose, as gunshots begin to rang out towards the young men and women of the convoy. For all but ten minutes, nothing but a firefight rang out as men faced certain death, but was unknown as the convoy was soon shrouded by a dust cloud....
Then.... Nothing, but peaceful silence again.
Two Hours Later....
A helicopter encroached upon a small scene of destruction, landing shortly after to survey the situation. The crew dismounted, as they approached a small convoy of four vehicles, riddled with bullet holes and burning, as corpses laid dead and quiet around them. The scene was disaster, young men and women, ambushed and massacred, as if they were nothing..... All but one.
A young man slowly began to shake on the ground, bristled with sand, blood stained the ground around him and then a blast hole lay next to him. The ground began to rustle as the helicopter crew noticed, and without hesitation ran over. Slowly they gripped the man, and began to roll him over as they dropped what they did and stood up, horrified looks on their faces as they glanced at a man.... A man with a shattered face.... The young soldier's face was destroyed from a blast! He sat up, quickly feeling his face, as the shattered remains even horrified him, he couldn't speak or see for that matter, as his brain couldn't even process the pain anymore, he tried to let out an even bigger cry, but only whimpering came out..... Who expects this.....
As the air crew quickly picked him up and loaded him onto the Blackhawk, the helicopter slowly began to kick up sand as it levitated off the ground, the engines groaning louder and louder as a chopping sound began to echo.
Am I A Person Anymore?
A doctor slowly stared through a panned glass, at a man who laid in a hospital bed, his head surrounded by bandages, his eyes, opened as he glared straight at a wall. He listened slowly as the sound of footsteps rang out through the room, the sound of high heels clicking against the tiled floor. They stopped....
The young man's voice began to pour out patiently.
" Where am I? Why.... cant I see? "
The doctor sighed for a second, a female sigh from what he noticed, as he heard her voice shoot out to answer his questions.
" You are in Germany, slotted to return home soon.... Its a miracle your alive soldier, I don't know how to explain this...." She sighed for a moment then spoke again. " Your face, was destroyed, by a blast, your platoon, was killed, an ambush.... Do you even remember who you are? "
The young man just laid motionless and felt his emotions spike, anguish hit him, then fear, he couldn't comprehend what happened. The battle was so quick, then everything went black....
"Specialist Luke Brown, 325th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne.... I.... but... I remember waking up... but nothing hurt, but my face, I couldn't speak.... I couldn't smell, I couldn't even see! " He hesitated as he tried to cry for a moment. " My platoon is dead.... and now I'm going to return home... looking like a monster! "
He couldn't live with himself as he felt anguish, let alone, now how is he going to live with others.... The shame he felt for himself as he should be dead among st those left before him. This wasn't a blessing.
The doctor slowly approached the bed and read his vital signs, slowly jotting down what the vibrant screen said, then turned her head towards him. He just kept his head forward, and slowly spoke, as she jumped, she wasn't expecting it as she saw the photo of the soldier before the battle, he was actually good looking, just in a bad situation.... She slowly calmed down as she sighed for a second, listening to what he said. " How long.... Do the bandages have to stay on for? " The doctor hesitated for a moment before saying out loud. " Just for a few months, til the healing is complete... You will have to go home with them on.... " She didn't want to tell him that, he had, no face, and some how his internals were completely fine..... What happened over there was the real question.

Overtime Brown healed, slowly but surely, but the scarring on his face was still too severe for him to return home, however, the Army pushed him out, as they soon turned their backs on him and sent him home with a medical discharge for his service. Brown stood motionless at the airport, in civilian clothes, waiting for a familiar face, the airport was similar, but the faces, so many were staring at him, as most of the skin had healed, but there was still major scars from the wounds covering his face. He felt shame as he stepped forward and started walking. The airport was Logan, he was home, Boston.... Finally safe.... he managed to escape the hectic population inside, exiting the terminal slowly, chuckling as he popped in a cigarette in his mouth, taking out a lighter, and igniting it. Exhaling slowly he said. " Home sweet home. " Letting out one less chuckle. He saw a familiar face, it was his Girlfriend, without hesitation he ran over and scooped her up saying. " I missed you, babe... " Her face was different, she was trying to hide her emotions over what happened to his face, his disfigurement, he wasn't the same man anymore, and she could tell. She cracked a smile as best she could as she responded. " I did too. " She kissed him quickly, then yelling. " Your mother has been non-stop calling about you being home you know! " She started laughing as he finally set her down, he was laughing as well.
