TUESDAY 8/20

Midnight

Having packed up most of his belongings for the move tomorrow, a teenage boy sleeps on a cot in the corner of an empty room. Rejected from his own home, he shall be starting a new life tomorrow in Lanham, Ohio. He has been ordered to sleep well in preparation for the exhausting journey ahead, but his slumber is interrupted as his consciousness is seemingly taken elsewhere.

Jack feels himself being lifted from the cot, unable to move his body. He feels lighter than air as his mind flies through empty space towards an unknown destination. Suddenly, in a flash of light, Jack can suddenly see and feel as normal, though the world around him does not feel real. He appears to have made his way into a train compartment, and a rather spacious one at that. He is lying in a bed, at the foot of which is a window which extends all the way to the opposite edge of the room. By Jack's head is an end table, and a lamp sits atop this emitting a dim glow through the blue lampshade. Next to this is the sliding compartment door, and beside that an empty picture frame, or perhaps a window with a wall behind it. Against the wall directly opposite Jack lie two armchairs with a floor lamp between them. In one of these chairs sits a funny looking old man in black with a long nose and a mad grin ear-to-ear. Immediately the dreamlike quality of this room comes into focus. The train is passing through a tunnel that never seems to end, as seen by the flashes of electronic lights through the window. Everything in this room- the bedding, the carpet, the walls and ceiling, the lampshade and even the chairs- is a soothing shade of blue.

Suddenly, the strange old man chuckles and speaks. "Welcome to the Velvet Room. This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter," he calmly explains as if this whole situation is in any way natural. "If you are alarmed, that is a natural reaction. But fear not, I have brought you here from within your dreams; your real body is still safely asleep in your old home. I have summoned you here to warn you of an impending ordeal, one which you shall share with others of a similar fate. It is only by combining your will with theirs that you shall have the strength to overcome it."

The man gestures to the air in front of him, and from this a piece of paper and quill with ink emerge, suspended in the air. "You may call me Igor. I shall grant you the power and guidance to bring your destined allies together, and to conquer the trials ahead. But I ask only this in return: You must sign this contract." Igor displays the palm of his left hand while resting his chin on his right, and the paper and quill float their way over to Jack. "By signing your name, you will be bound to its terms. You acknowledge that the choices you make in the coming year are yours alone." Igor watches expectantly as the paper floats motionless before Jack.

Jack's eyes twitched open as he looked to the side, his eyes processing the dim light and quickly realizing this isn't his bedroom. Not that the one he slept in was his any longer. He pulled the sheets off of himself and sat at the bedside, staring at the man with unnatural face proportions in front of him, full of shock and disbelief. His jaw dropped, his eyes awoke and his brows rose.

Jack quickly calmed down. This had to be a dream. Just that. Dreams could be really... animated at times. As Igor explained their location and tried to calm Jack down, he merely sat there, listening to what his 'imagination' had to say. Jack still had his doubts - could he really be on that level of consciousness in a dream? Why bother thinking about it? Shortly after, the man warned Jack of a future ordeal he would have to pass with a group of others.

As the paper, quill, and ink floated over to him, Jack, remained perfectly calm. It was all a dream. Might as well sign it. And it was at the moment his hand held the quill in his hand that he realized. The sensation of the item in his hand. The distinct impression of holding a quill in his hand, it was too real. Up to this point, Jack remained quiet, but now he had to ask the question. "This isn't a dream, is it?" he muttered, unsure whether it was a question to himself, or to Igor. He lifted his hand and stopped at the place he was to sign. The contract was too esoteric to even try to debunk it. With a series of swift motions, Jack left his name on the paper and put the quill back into the ink, thinking it was the proper thing to do.

He relaxed his body language a little and looked up at Igor with determined, yet calculating eyes, watching him expectantly, awaiting whatever his new 'guide' had to say. He was ready for anything from 'This world needs you' to 'With great power comes great responsibility,' to anything less cheesy. Then again, he kept ready, you can't underestimate a man that controls time and space like who was in front of him. Materializing a piece of paper and something to write with was blatantly supernatural.

The paper in front of Jack fades from existence with his name written on it. Igor chuckles once again and says simply, "Excellent. Now, we shall meet again when it is time to fulfill my end of the bargain. For now, return to your world..." Without a chance to respond, Jack suddenly starts feeling the same feeling as when he came in, weightless and immaterial as he drifts away from the room. He feels himself losing consciousness this time. When next he opens his eyes, it will be in his own room.

WEDNESDAY 8/21
Morning

Yesterday was the first day of school for students of Lanham high. Although Jack is already on the roster for simplicity's sake, the school is well aware that he will not be starting until tomorrow. It looks to be another sunny day, the chill of Autumn not yet setting in.

Dunban groggily rolls on his side, awoken by a most unpleasant noise. He reaches for the snooze button but thankfully stops himself as he reads the time. 7:05; he's reached the absolute limit of snoozes this morning, he begrudgingly admits. Forcing himself to stand up, he chooses to open up his laptop over less important things like showering and breakfast. Three new messages on warfare.net are begging for his attention. Each one reveals itself to be a friend request from strangers he met online, all of which he denies without even reading the attached message. Hanging out with the same crowd every day sounded worse than a root canal.

Finishing up his business, Dunban closes his laptop and gathers his things off the floor. He slings his bookbag over his shoulder and grabs a granola bar for breakfast on his way out.

I couldn't help but name Jack's brother after his initial Persona. It's too good and Jason is still a popular name nowadays :P

Having long said the goodbyes to his family, Jack was in the backseat of a car driving on a highway. He looked out through the window to his right and saw a sign: 'Lanham, 20 miles.'

Behind the wheel was his older brother, who the parents tasked with delivering their insubordinate son to his grandparents. Jack's brother; Jason was already an adult and had his own driver's license, but no job yet, so it was only natural that he'd be given something to do like this. Jack's brother was tall, manly, of a rigid build. He had a thick 5 o'clock shade on his face and pale, unkempt, grayish hair, much like his younger brother. He was focused on the road, but his eyes happened to slightly detour into the mirror. He saw Jack, who was clearly sad that he had to leave behind his home.

"Hey, don't worry, champ. They can't keep you there forever, right? You'll come back before you know it," he smiled, hoping to lighten up the mood.
Jack sighed, looking at his brother with eyes full of intense resentment. "I was proven innocent. What kind of parents do this?" he asked bitterly.
"I know, I know. I trust you. But you know our parents, man. They're... harsh. Remember when I hit that kid in second grade? I got a ban for TV for half a year, just for that." Jason tried to argue.

It was true, their parents were orthodox and extremely severe with punishments. "It's clear you didn't do it. But you know how hard it would be for you to go back to school right now? What would the teachers and your peers think?"

Jack looked out the window again, with conflicted thoughts, thinking of some counter-argument. He didn't want to argue with his brother, of course, but that didn't change the fact that the situation he was in was completely unreasonable. The only thing that came to Jack's mind as a response was a meek and full of bitter anger: "This isn't fair. I don't care if I'm there for a month or a year, or until I'm an adult. It isn't fair," he shook his head.

Jason had no response. His face got a little sadder, but he didn't want to further the state his brother was in. Actually, Jason agreed with Jack. He was just trying to help and he got this as a reward. Jason looked at the road with focus again.

Jason dropped Jack off in the city center. "Wait here for grandpa. He'll be here by eight. Meanwhile, I guess you can have a look around, but don't go too far."

Jason stood beside Jack and gave him his bag, who Jack took and hung over his left shoulder. He still had that mean, judging, clearly angry look on his face, like he wanted to say something but didn't. Jason sighed and reached out with his right hand, proposing: "Secret handshake?" in an excitable way.

Jack couldn't help. He smiled. "Secret handshake," he affirmed, reaching out with his hand. The two brothers proceeded to perform a series of complex, sudden gestures and movements, including fist-bumps, among other things. At the end of it, the two shared a brief, but not too extensive bro-hug. "Don't teach it to anyone. It's a secret," Jason smiled at his little brother. "By the way, I'll visit you on Christmas. I should have a job by then, so I can buy you a gift. Write me a letter," he added. "Here's some change for you. Don't tell mom and dad, they'd kill me. Spend it wisely, you know that grandpa won't give you money for anything. Maybe grandma will," he reached into his pocket and gave Jack a $20 bill.

"See you, champ," Jason rubbed his brother on the head, scattering his hair. Jason returned to the car, fastened his seatbelt and drove away, as Jack waved to him goodbye.

Jack was left completely alone in this new, bizarre place.

Arlene was already cooking breakfast for her 'family'. "Arlene, Arlene!" She couldn't help, but smiled. "Ren, what did father told you? You're not suppose to be in the kitchen." Arlene said as she slid the eggs down from the pan. They softly landed on the plates, as she grabbed the toast and distributed over evenly to each plate. "Yea, but I wanted to talk to you!" Ren said with a smile. She sighed as she picked up the plates filled with breakfast and set them over the table. Ren just happily sat over at the table and started to eat.

Seeing that she made breakfast she started to take her book bag and put it around her shoulder. "Hey, Arlene aren't you going to eat?" Ren said as he looked over to Arlene. "No, I already... ate." Arlene lied as such left the house in hurry to get to the school already. She ordered some snacks along the way and ate until she arrived to the school.

8/21 2019 ~ Early Morning

Louise woke up fairly early, letting out a yawn as she rose from her bed, wearing her yellow pajamas, although they're starting to grow on her.

Upon taking a bath, Louise wore her usual outfit; white polo along with a green tie and skirt. Fixing her tie in front of the mirror, she let out a smile, considering that her first day went on quite well. She headed out here room, finding that her Father had already cooked breakfast.

"Morning, dear!" Her Father greeted quite cheerfully for a man of his age. "Slept well?" Louise nodded in response, as she sat down the table. The two of them ate breakfast together, talking about what they're goals are for week and if they completed them. Much to their surprise, none of them are quite done yet.

Minutes later, they finished eating. Louise soon heading out to her school; Lanham Academy with her bag tucked on her armpit...

Eivuri sat up in his bad, his face that of a stoic expression. This is what he usually felt in the morning: a complete sense of default. His bed had all purple sheets, each a different shade, which also ach the theme of his bedroom. It was early, but not too early. Just early enough to not be rushing to get ready for his day of school. Eivuri changed his clothes into those appropriate for his day to follow, and looked at himself in the mirror as he cleaned his glasses and put them on, taking in his purple-haired covered body. He sighed, and exited his bedroom.

He tiptoed silently past his grandmother's bedroom, previously the guest bedroom, and past his red-painted brothers room, who his pet dog, Henry, currently hard-sleeps in every night since Rowan left. Eivuri entered the kitchen, ate breakfast, and headed to the restroom to get ready. It was very uneventful, but then came his favorite part of getting ready. Choosing what to bring to school. He laid it out every night to chose what was needed, and what he could chose to bring. After choosing the necessary items, he zipped up his backpack, and exited the house to walk to school.

After a short walk around the neighborhood, Jack got a good look at what the local shops were selling. Not much of a difference from where he lived. It was an uncanny surprise.

Waiting for his grandfather to arrive, numerous students from the local school passed him. Avoiding their gazes, ranging from slightly judgmental to coldly indifferent, finally, a short black car arrived for him, stopping just near the sidewalk. Jack got into the backseat and looked into his grandfather' blue, tired eyes. The man had deep, wrinkled skin all around his face and body, making it clear he was at least in his early 70's. The feature that stood out was his balding head, with whatever little hair remaining being of white color. The man also had a pair of glasses and mustache that hid a firm smile below it.

Jack's grandfather looked at him. "How's my favorite grandson?" the old man asked, cheerfully albeit strained. The old man clearly wasn't in best shape. "Grandpa Chuck. It's good to see you," the boy replied. "Look, I don't know what these muckle darned hooligans did to you, but I will talk to your parents and tell them to cease this... asinine tomfoolery!" the man said, loudly and with some clear resentment toward Jack's parents. At least they agreed on that much, although Chuck used a lot of old slang in his speech, typical and stereotypical of old people. "No need. Don't bother," Jack said, although reluctantly. "Don't say that, Jackie! Your mother, she's a great woman, but your father! He's the cause of this. I told my daughter not to marry that goshdarn hoodlum! Now look at what's happening! You can't even have the right enviorment... envirment... enviro..." the old man struggled to pull together a word that was too complex for him. "Environment," Jack finished the sentence for him. "Yes, that's right! Whatever, let's get you home. We've prepared room for you with Margaret. I'm going to have to ask you to forgive me, we didn't have the time or money for anything too suspensefu... suspunsfe... susp-ah... Help me out here!" Jack was pulled away from what seemed to be deep thought. "Uh, suspenseful?" he half-asked, unsure if that was the word his grandfather was looking for. "Yes, that's right!"

On their way, the car briefly stopped to let by a few high-school students by.

Chuck pulled the car over near his house and offered help. "Jack, I'll get your bag to your room. Don't tell me I'm too old, I can handle it," the man forcefully took the bag from Jack's shoulder and carried it, albeit barely, in his two hands. "You go get fresh air. Kids need fresh air these days to function normally. You probably want to take a breather after such a long journey." Jack wanted to quickly, but politely object. "Actually, I--" he was interrupted. "Ah-ah-ah. Grandpa knows best. Go and breathe air. You have school tomorrow. Don't be too late for breakfast, though. Your grandmother is making your favorite fish fillets!" the old man carried the back into his house and disappeared behind the door, leaving Jack behind on the fresh air without the time to protest, with a drop of sweat on the back of his neck.

He looked at the town, as people passed by, high-school students in particular. "I guess this is it," he muttered to himself, pushing his hands in his pockets and observing quietly.

Arlene looked to see a rather new face. She knew almost everyone due to her forced services to them, so she at least knew everyone around. Seeing him made her just want to get out of there. "Oi, Arlene-chan, where are you going?" At that moment she instantly froze. She turned around to her sister, Aiko was standing along with her friends. "Oh is that the new student, you spot? Well we have to polite and introduce ourselves right?" The tone in her voice was rather mocking, as she started to push, Arlene to the transfer student.

"Hey, transfer student! What's your name?" Aiko said as she walked up to him, while pushing Arlene. When, Arlene gave a side glance at her sister, she immediately knew that Aiko saw him as attractive. The guy looked plain, and normal, I mean he just looks like an ordinary person. Not giving a chance for Jack to speak, Aiko opened her mouth. "My name is Aiko, and this is my sister, Arlene! If you need any help ask her, first out of all people here! She's the most reliable person!" Arlene just stared down to the ground. She was just too embarrass to look at a boy's face, and when she first time she did it she flushed a little bit.

Still tired from staying late last night, Dunban almost can't handle the obnoxious voice he hears coming from up ahead. He winces when he hears the girl address 'Arlene-chan...' What a weeb. Wait... Arlene? Isn't that his neighbor's name? He looks up and sure enough, that's the girl next door. How strange. He never knew she had a little sister. He also didn't know they had a transfer student, but that was less surprising; Dunban never paid much attention to what the teachers talked about.

As he walked by, Dunban turns and remarks, "Hey, new kid. Welcome to Lanham. Try not to get wrapped up in anything weird too quickly."

Jack saw a couple of female students approaching him and quickly noticed that one was pushing the other. "Jack," he replied to the question of Aiko about his name. When he heard Aiko praising Arlene, he started wondering what was going on. He gazed at the two sisters with calculating eyes for a brief moment. After a moment, it shifted to a firm smirk. "I'll make sure to do that."

Another student walked up and welcomed him. This place sure had some friendly people living around. 'Maybe bro was right? Maybe it won't be so bad.' His attention was drawn back to the student when he mentioned getting wrapped up in weird things. "Weird?" he asked, not sure what Dunban meant.

"Hmm... I'd love to tell you, but maybe you should ask miss reliable here instead," Dunban teases, pointing to Arlene. "Nah, but seriously, it seems like this town gets a new weird rumor everyone's talking about every month. You'll probably end up getting involved eventually no matter how hard you try to avoid it; it's like a rite of passage or something." He points a thumb to himself with a cocky smile. "Lucky for you, you're talkin' to the town debunking specialist, Dunban Relian!" Dunban isn't quite sure what he's trying to prove here, but he's sure as hell into it at this point.

Misuteeku Misuteeku Birdsie Birdsie

Jack listened to the bizarre story. Every month? Rite of passage? That was... interesting. "I see. It's nice to meet you. I'm Jack." He thought a while about Dunban's words. 'Now that I think of it. I had this weird... dream. But that's just it. It was a dream. I'm sure of it,' he thought.

Jack relaxed his serious, thoughtful facial expression into a friendly smile, looking at Dunban, then at Aiko, then at Arlene. "You three all go to Lanham high?" he asked, curious if any of the group he was talking to was a classmate of his. It'd be good to make some friends early on and get used to the place as a whole, but they probably had to go to school right now. Jack was aware that he was free of school today.

8/21 ~ Early Morning
Interaction: OPEN

Louise's walk to school, so far, has been quite uneventful. Her not-so-wide circle of friends informed her about the newest student was about her age, and by deductive reasoning, in the same year level. Even so, her two friends continued gossiping as she remained quiet, headed for Lanham high.

Arlene could only nod her head. "Yep! I bet you'll get use to it pretty quickly! It's as boring as any other school!" Aiko said. Arlene was getting uncomfortable by the second. It was so awkward for her as of right now to speak up. Aiko purposely did this to bully her, but she had to endure it. "Anyway, I have to go, I need to go meet up with my friends!" Aiko said as she started to run off into the school. "Arlene remember to give the new guy a tour!" Aiko said with a evil smirk on her face that only, Arlene noticed.

Arlene was trying to speak up, but something kept on weighing her mind. She nodded to what, Aiko said which was pretty disrespectful but Aiko would forget about it alter. "A-a-any way, w-w-welcome to our, I-I h-hope that you enjoy it here." Arlene said her face growing increasingly red. This was going to be hard, as she walked up to Jack while looking down at his chest rather then his face. "D-Do you have your schedule?" She asked.

Birdsie Birdsie Flooberoid Flooberoid

As Aiko walked away, Jack looked at Arlene. 'She's stuttering? Is it a lack of confidence?...' Jack noticed that she was avoiding eye contact and blushing. Reading body language was much easier than reading someone's words, but Arlene made it pretty easy on both. The only way to heal shyness was to feed someone with confidence. Jack already had the schedule, but he decided to play helpless. "O-Oh, man. I'm so stupid!" he facepalmed, his face getting irritated. "I totally forgot to get the schedule. I'm a complete moron! And school's starting tomorrow for me too," he said, rather convincingly. "Can you help me out?" he asked. Most people would turn a little bold when faced with a person 'inferior' to them, so he hoped this would give a small boost to the girl's self-confidence. Surely, something like not having a schedule was understandable, but he added some tension by playing out like it was a serious thing to be ashamed of.

Misuteeku Misuteeku Flooberoid Flooberoid

Dunban raises an eyebrow, not totally buying the act but figuring Jack isn't up to anything that would affect him personally. He glances at his watch before looking back to Jack. "Well, Arlene and I are both going to be tardy if we don't get moving right now. I don't know about you, but tardiness on the second day of school isn't something that appeals to me," he says. "Jack, why don't you come along? We'll show you the way to school and you can pick up your schedule in the meantime?"

This only caused Arlene's self esteem to plunge further down. She wasn't dimwitted, and could see that he was trying to make her feel better. When Dunban spoke up, she felt an enormous wave of relief. "Y-yea..." Arlene said stuttering once again. Everyone around them already went inside the building, and she felt anxious. "I think you have to go to the front office to get another one." Arlene said as she looked at the school building. It was way too awkward to be hanging out with two boys that were towering her, or rather she felt like they were towering her.

"Of course," he said, still playing and hoping that she bought it, but it didn't seem like it. 'Damn. Now I just feel ridiculous,' he thought nervously. His facial expression returned to the same, indifferent look he had when he stood alone as he followed the two of them to the school. Getting a good look around the area would be a good idea, but he didn't need the schedule because he already had it. That's what you get for a vain attempt at kindness. "By the way," he turned to Dunban, expecting he'd know some answer to this question. "Anything bizarre happen around here recently? What's the newest rumor? Anything about weird dreams?"

Misuteeku Misuteeku Flooberoid Flooberoid

Arlene could only give a glance at Dunban, before looking at Jack's chest, because she couldn't look at his face. "W-well... there's a rumor going on about a website..." Arlene said as she started to speak up. "P-p-people said that it's a c-completely empty site, b-but rumor has it." Arlene took a quick gulp of air as she continued to 'face' Jack. "T-that w-w-whenever, y-you have h-headphones on y-you, start t-to f-fall a-asleep." Sweat came slightly dripping from her head. "D-during this p-process, when t-the peo-ple who f-fell asle-ep go to a coma l-like s-tate, and never wake up," Arlene mustered as she tried to get the information out from her mouth. "I-I g-got s-so seve-re th-that t-he me-d-dia is ta-ta-talking about I-I-it all day"

"Yeah, that's a fun one. A kid in our class didn't show up yesterday, but the adults aren't saying anything. Thinkin' about trying it myself soon. Anyone else in?" He laughs. "But what's this about weird dreams? You hallucinating from the long trip, or... Or maybe it's the ghooooost of Iiiiigor??" Dunban can't get enough of his own silly jokes. He's finally got an audience for them, too. A boy who's new in town, and a girl who seems to take the spooky stories seriously. This is bound to be a fun year.
Birdsie Birdsie Misuteeku Misuteeku

After he heard their words, Jack clutched his chin and looked at the ground for a moment, full of thought. 'Interesting, but none of that concerns me,' he thought, then looked back up with a more lively expression and relaxed body language.

"I see," he was disappointed to see that none of them knew anything about-- Say what. He heard the name of Igor mentioned by Dunban. A drop of sweat slid down the back of Jack's neck, his eyelids getting wide in surprise. After a moment, he sighed and returned to tranquility, scratching the back of his neck as a sheepish grin slowly formed on his face. "I guess I'm just tired," he said. Jack must have been hearing things already. It was surely a coincidence. "That reminds me. I need to go or grandma will be mad at me. She's serious about meals and I haven't had breakfast. See you guys later," he pushed his hands down his pockets and walked in the opposite direction, back home.

Misuteeku Misuteeku Flooberoid Flooberoid

Arlene could only just watch him leave. "W-w-well I-I h-have t-to g-get t-to cla-cla-class. Bye!" Arlene said to Dunban as she had enough. She almost ran her way to her class with sweat dropping for her. It was just clearly too much for her to talk to them. Fast calm breathes kicked in as she eased herself and entered the her classroom. "Easy... easy..." She said to herself as she sat down in her seat.

Flooberoid Flooberoid Birdsie Birdsie

Well that was an interesting reaction, Dunban thought, noticing Jack's eyes widen momentarily with some realization. Did he take the bit about the ghost seriously...? Dunban hadn't had him pegged for a superstitious type, but figures he must have his reasons. Just then, first bell rings and Arlene dashes off to class without Dunban having a single opportunity to respond. "Uhhh, okay?" She does know the first bell is just a warning, right? There are still five minutes left before they would be officially late to first period, and Dunban uses all of these on his walk to class.

Dunban takes his seat behind Louise just as the bell rings. An open seat is left right next to him, which he now understands is to be occupied by the new transfer student, Jack.

Lunchtime

The cafeteria in Lanham high is awfully crowded today. Attendance is high on account of nobody wanting to miss days so early in the year, and the Open Lunch program hasn't started yet. On days like these, Dunban takes a seat at a special spot he's found, an unoccupied table that almost everyone getting their lunch walks by. From here, he tends to pick up on a lot of gossip. And hey, it's not eavesdropping if he just happens to overhear!

Lunchtime - 12:34

A fit-looking student walked through the door with a smug expression on his face. The chatter was very loud. As he walked in, almost slamming the doors open, everyone stopped talking all at once, staring at the muscular boy. "What the hell are you looking at? Piss off!" He exclaimed in an angry tone. He kept then resumed walking rather slowly, his hands in his jacket's pockets. He walked towards Dunban, grinning smugly. "Look who it is." He remarked with a mischevious smirk drew across his cheeks. He sat down at the table with him and crossed his left leg over the other, "So, what have you been doing lately? It's been a while since we've seen each other." He muttered, adjusting his hat. The students all across the canteen kept up their noisy chatter and Joseph's eye twitched lightly. "Be quiet, damn it! You're too loud!" He shouted out at a nearby table of girls that were chatting and giggling too loudly for anybody's taste. The girls shut their mouths and began whispering to each other to not annoy Joseph more. He then looked back at Dunban, sighing, "Good grief."
