Personality: Talkative, and friendly, Ayumu is amiable to almost everyone he meets. This is a front, though. He's emotionally distant and insincere and doesn't care a whole lot about other people. He loves talking about himself but isn't fond of when others do the same - a narcissist. It isn't to say he's antisocial or hates people. He just doesn't put them on the same level as himself.
For him, social interaction is a means of passing the time and distracting him. While usually "nice" enough, he's not afraid of confrontation. He's very adventurous and fearless, to the point of naivety and carelessness. He doesn't mind getting hurt or sad since he can view it as "not real" and push it away. Thus it's difficult to get him worried about anything but his own appearances.
Backstory: Ayumu lives with his parents and grandma, and has a big sister at uni. He had the bad luck of mental issues, and a predisposition to delusions. The stress of moving from middle to high school caused this to manifest. He started seeing everyday coincidences, such as being sick and missing a dreaded school day, as more than just that. He thought he was special. In his mind, the only explanation that made sense was that he was the main character of a videogame.
Although this wasn't true in the slightest, he fully believed in it. He started slacking in school, skipping on purpose, and distancing himself from his friends. He was alone, the only "main character" in this world, and grew depressed and nihilistic. Why care about anything when none of it was "real"? To escape the worst of these moods he'd set small personal goals like "eat all your lunch for extra experience" and "skip three days in a row for a new achievement". Sometimes this even lead to small hallucinations or intrusive thoughts.
Eventually he grew so tired of being depressed he snapped a little, and decided it wasn't so bad to be "the main character of a videogame". "I'm not going to get out of the game, so I might as well play it," he thought. His sociality returned, shallow and egotistical. Other people weren't real to him; mere two-dimensional background characters there for decoration or filler. He couldn't accept that they had real emotions and memories, just like he did. Although he was still very mentally ill, he managed to hide it well under a guise of normal. He even hid it from himself.
