Character Sheet Link: Layton Crownsfold (Halfling Sorcerer)

Preferred Game Speed: High Activity - I'll be active mostly Monday through Friday 9-5pm EST (unless work is busy), and will be moderately active later in the day (7 to 10pm EST). Weekends I'll keep up best I can but it'll be sporadic.

Backstory:
Layton comes from a long line of halflings with both incredible power and incredibly poor luck. Family legend tells of a distant ancestor that made a bargain with the Raven Queen that gave them the ability to wield magic; but those born with the gift tend to meet untimely (and embarrassing) early ends. Layton has inherited this gift (curse?), and the teardrop-shaped, unmelting ice shard that allegedly was given by the Raven Queen when the pact was made. He wears it on a necklace against his skin - though to others the teardrop is painfully cold, Layton feels nothing. He uses it as a spellcasting focus.

The "Luck of the Crownsfolds", as other halflings jokingly refer to it, hasn't left Layton untouched, though so far he has miraculously survived the many mishaps that should have resulted in immediate death (an unfortunate accident while watching a knife juggler as a child; slipping on dung and being knocked unconscious face down in a puddle of ox urine; a misunderstanding with a drunken half-orc who thought Layton was trying to sleep with his sheep).

In Layton's 23 years, he figures he cheated death forty or fifty times, and so he has acquired a dark sense of humor about the whole situation. He loves telling stories about his many, many scars, always played for comedy, not tragedy. He knows the Raven Queen will claim him when she pleases, but would prefer to go out on his own terms, doing something heroic - hence, he set out adventuring.

Whether as a result of the Queen's curse, the shadow magic flooding through his veins, or via his many experiences with the other side, Layton has a few distinguishing features and quirks. He is an average-sized halfling, with a jet-black mop of hair he slicks back out of his ghostly-pale face. In daylight, his eyes are a deep blue, though from afar or when dilated in dark spaces, they appear black. He has a tendency to sleep with his eyes open; he rarely blinks and has a tendency to stare, a combination that often proves off-putting to strangers.

Layton is still learning the extent of his powers, and his immediate goal is to find a mentor. When he casts a spell, the area around him in a 5-foot radius gets a little colder, and Layton's breath becomes visible. Since childhood, he has often spotted a large hound seemingly made of shadow lurking around him that others can't see - sometimes sleeping, sometimes barking silently at something unseen, sometimes pacing nervously. Layton isn't sure if it's hunting him, helping him, or keeping an eye on him for the Raven Queen, but he feels a sense of security and contentment when he sees the dog. He'll often absentmindedly talk to it, though it doesn't respond or react.

At a young age Layton chose to pursue intellectual pursuits in an effort to stay out of harm's way and minimize the impact of his bad luck. He also hoped to find more information about Shadowfell, the Raven Queen, and his magical abilities. He found work in a cloister near Daggerford, at first dusting and organizing books, then translating Elvish and Drow texts to common (searching for information on the Shadar-Kai all the while). When it became clear the knowledge he sought was elsewhere, and that he was just as likely to die from an infected papercut as from an arrow to the chest, he decided to strike out as an adventurer.

Hullo!

Character Sheet:

I see nothing wrong here, or at least nothing that catches my eye as being incorrect.

Character Backstory:

This reads really well, the only thing I might say is it sounds like you went down the list of suggested quirks and picked nearly all of them, as well as the radius effects while casting spells. I understand his magic having an effect around him, but perhaps shorten the radius to just being him -- only his breath becomes visible while casting. At higher levels perhaps it could increase, but at this point you still shouldn't be effecting things that much.

The other quirks, I'd suggest maybe keeping the hair, and the sleeping/blinking. The hound I feel is fine since that leads to a later class ability, and the arcane focus sounds like a slightly modified trinket.

If you have any questions, responses, or edits (which should be done to this post), be sure to let me know by tagging me ( Abrahms Abrahms ) in the discord!
