Realistic or Modern Our Romeo and Juliet Stories

Arabella Gabriella Acardi
"Hey, you must be the lucky girl who gets to spend the night with me," the boy sitting across from Arabella remarked jokingly. What an interested, quirky introduction.

Quirking an eyebrow, Arabella grinned, replying, "and you, must be the frog that hopefully returns to his handsome form at midnight." Arabella appreciated the humor and lightheartedness in his introduction. Reaching for his hand, Arabella returned the handshake, suddenly curious as to what this night had in itinerary; maybe, just maybe, she could spare some time out of her nightly mischief.

Like a genuine gentleman, he pulled the chair out of Arabella and introduced himself: "I'm Arthur by the way, it's a pleasure, and you?"

Arabella paused; she hadn't really come to the ball to socialize, though so far, Arthur had obtained her attention for longer than what she normally would have given a stranger. Maybe, she would entertain him and his social-butterfly game for a while: "I'm..." she began, "an alien, from the planet of Jupiter." Or, maybe not.

"Makenzie." Ben said, tasting her name. "A beautiful name. I'm Benedict, but please call me Ben. Only my father calls me by my real name." he said, making a small face. He pulled her gently closer, running a hand up her back. At this point, they song was starting to end, but Ben was swaying to his own private beat. Normally, he'd try and dance with every girl in this room, but for now, he was content to stay attached. "I can't believe I haven't seen you around before." he said, giving her a smile. "Although, I am kind of enjoying the mystery." he said with a chuckle.

He wanted to be alone with her, but now wasn't the time. Not yet. He still had to make appearances. He couldn't just wander off. He knew his father would want to know how the Wilsons and the Jones were. He knew he needed to mingle with the right people, but right now he just didn't give a damn.

Arthur Smith Jr.

Beautiful.

That was all that went through Arthur's head at the moment, thank God he was paired with such a beauty. "and you must be the frog that hopefully returns to his handsome form at midnight." Arthur let out a small laugh, she'd already began playing hard to get. This only caused him to want her even more though, she definitely wasn't like the others. "Would you be willing to stay up with me til then and find out?" He asked, a smile painted across his face. He shifted into his own seat then, and continued on to ask her name.

"I'm an alien... from the planet of Jupiter." She replied, Arthur just let out another short laugh. "How exotic. " He noted. This girl was definitely not like the others, this only managed to intrigue him all the more, though. "I'm certain the aliens of Jupiter often gave the frogs of Earth a chance, that, I learned in History." Arthur added jocularly. He couldn't quite keep his eyes of Arabella though, something about her seemed to just attract him towards her. She definitely was the princess amidst the crowd, and guess who won over the princess? The frog prince, who was that? Arthur.

Charlie looked around at the ballroom again and it felt more and more like a fairy tale. The setting was perfect and he was sitting across the table from a beautiful girl, easily resembling a fairy tale princess. He used the mask as a confidence booster as he smiled over at her. He had noticed other couples taking to the dance floor and figured he could at least find out if he had a shot.
"It definitely is. It's hard to believe we're actually here. I don't know about you, but I have never been used to such royal treatment. Under any circumstances," Charlie said. He had been to his fair share of parties, but party flirting was much much different than ballroom flirting. Party flirting ended in sleeping together where ballroom flirting was supposed to end with maybe a kiss goodbye at the end of the night. However, both were risky when feelings were involved, and at that moment, Charlie's heart was beating out of his chest.
"So Karoleigh, tell me a bit more about yourself. I mean, anything important in your life. Or anyone?" He asked her, immediately knowing he was jumping the gun a bit quickly, but being still pleased with himself for making a move. A mask really did give him the confidence he never would've had before. If things went poorly, she would never find out who he was. If they went well, more power to them.

"Alright...Ben" she said with a smile, she got a little sad that the song was ending, she was hoping that the next song would be a slow song, because she didn't want it to end. "Maybe you have, sometimes we are so busy with other things we never notice the little things" she said placing her hand on his check.

Suddenly the song ended, The mayor of the town got up and took the microphone "I hope all of you are having an amazing time, it's so nice to see people interacting and having fun without knowing who the other is" a few people started to clap, she looked over at the clock only an hour had passed and the ball was only supposed to last about 3 hours at the most "Continue having fun, but make sure to stay for our big announcement at the end of the dance" he said passing the microphone back to the Dj, who started back up playing more upbeat music

"would you like to go and sit down" she said bringing her attention back to Ben "Or we can dance some more" she smiled, it was hard to believe that she had such a connection to this guy, she was still tying to be on high alert, but slowly she was letting her guard down.

Karoleigh studied the man before her, squinting a little bit as though that would help her see through his mask. It didn't, of course, but a girl could try. From what she could tell, he was cute, and for some reason she found she really liked his hair. She wondered what it would be like to run her fingers through the curls, and if they would be soft against her hand. Tilting her head to the side a little, she realized she was daydreaming and cleared her throat, settling back in her seat.

"I'm definitely not a princess." She said in response to his statement about royal treatment. She thought about her father, and the price tag for the dress popped into her mind. She knew he would want her to have fun, but it was hard when she'd seen the numbers.

His next question caught her off guard, and brought her out of her thoughts. She couldn't help but smile at his blatant question; but she didn't mind the forwardness. It was nice to not play a guessing game. "There's plenty in my life that's important to me." She began, glancing around the room. "My dad, my friends. My education, just to name a few." She shrugged one bare shoulder, leaning forward to rest her arms on the table. "But no, no one important." She hesitated, then went on. "What about you? Anyone important in your life?"

Charlie smiled at her from across the table as she responded. He pushed away a few stray curls that had fallen in his face. "You know, I don't believe you. I believe anyone can be a princess and you... You certainly look the part," Charlie said. He was interested as she began to list some important things in her life. He was definitely excited to say the least when she didn't mention a love life. He smiled back at her before replying.
"Well aside from my mother and my buddy Marcus that I may have literally had to drag here, I don't consider anyone very special in my life," He said, laughing a little at the thought of Marcus probably making a fool of himself across the room. "So I guess it wouldn't be completely out of line for me to ask you for a dance?" Charlie asked, standing up and holding his hand out to her. He knew the possibility of being shot down was there, but his confidence was running pretty high tonight. Despite all of his confidence, however, he could feel his nervous heart pounding in his chest.

Ben leaned into her touch slightly as she placed a hand on her cheek. A part of him just really wanted to kiss her, but he held back for a moment. As the song ended and the mayor came on stage, Ben turned to half listen, one arm wrapping around her waist to keep her close. He smiled as she asked him a question. "Let's sit down. I want to learn more about you.....actually I have an idea. Wanna come with me?" he asked with a smile, holding out his hand for her.

His father had invested in the hotel, so his family was able to see most of it. The room he was picturing was perfect. It would be quiet, with the piano in there too. Mackenzie seemed like she was the type of girl who was a bit romantic, and this was the perfect spot to sweep her off her feet.

Karoleigh couldn't stop the smile that spread across her face, nor the blush that crept onto her cheeks. She was grateful for her mask. Though it didn't hide her cheeks, she could just turn her head slightly and look away and hope he wouldn't see it. There were people dancing, and though she didn't want to be rude to her table-mate, she did have an itch in her body that meant she wanted to get up and be on the dance floor.
As if he read her mind, he stood and extended his hand towards her. Looking back towards him, she smiled and shook her head, reaching out to clasp her hand in his and stand. She left her clutch on the chair, pushing it back in so the little bag was hidden. "I'd love to dance. But I'm sorry in advance if I step on your feet. My dad is my practice partner, and he and I are always stepping on each other's feet." She giggled, the blush still present on her cheeks.

"Alright" she smiled, she was always down for some sort of adventure, but this felt like something much more than that. She noticed that a few more people had started crowding the dance floor, it was a group of guys and they were obviously intoxicated or high off of something. They still had their masks on, the group of guys spread out around the dance floor and one of them walked over to Makenzie. As soon as the kid walked over she recognized him "Miss Makenzie Jacobs, don't you look amazing" he said, the guy went to her school and normally he was a big show off and quite the ladies man but she was never interested and yet he kept trying to chase her. "C'mon Kenzie, come over with us, there's a party going on right now near 4th, alcohol is provided" he went to grab her arm.

"Back off Ryan" she said, breaking away from Ben "Go home before you get in trouble" she said trying to say as calm as she could.

Ben had gotten Makenzie just about to the door, when a group of drunk guys came in and began to head to the dance floor. As one of them made their way towards her, he began to look a little defensive. He clearly knew her, and was not being subtle at all. In fact, he was trying to hit on her with no class at all. He could smell the alcohol coming off his breath and rolled his eyes in disgust as Makenzie moved away from the guy's grasp. No one grabbed a girl like that. It was wrong. "Yeah, go home before you puke spiked punch all over your hundred dollar suit." he said, knowing he was being a bit of an ass.

He took a step towards him, and stopped suddenly. The mask may have hid his eyes, but his nose was slightly swollen and there was tell tale faded bruising, just barely peeking out of the edge of his mask. "I know you." he said, trying to control himself. "You're that little bitch who almost broke my ankle. You got me suspended!" he said, getting pissed off. This cocky jerk was the reason Ben was sitting on the bench during the height of the soccer season, his chances of getting recruited to a good college plummeting downhill fast.

Kenzie glanced back between the boys, although she didn't talk to Ryan, she did remember him bragging about how he won a fight against a Montague kid. Before she could say something, the group of drunk guys that Ryan came in with had started arguing with some one else. The hotel security came in and tried to break up the group, the one managed to get away from the guard.

He ran up to the podium and grabbed the microphone and yelled "Montague and Capulets are both here" the guard ran up and grabbed the guy. Makenzie didn't know what to do, people around her started arguing, some kids were more surprised that anything. She looked back at Ben, it obviously made sense but she didn't want to believe it.

Charlie smiled at her as he lead her towards the dance floor. He laughed at her comment as he assured her, "I never really learned to dance, so bear with me." He kept a respectful distance as he wrapped his arms around her waist, not sure of how far he would be able to push his luck. He noticed other couples dancing on the floor. He wasn't exactly sure what he was doing so he kinda watched the couple beside him and tried his best to seem confident. When a fought broke out on the dance floor, Charlie just ignored it. Fights broke out at any high school party, even one this high class. He couldn't ignore it, however when a boy stepped up to the microphone to announce both Capulets and Montagues were both present. He looked across to the girl he was dancing with and went over the pros and cons of asking her what school she went to. We would love some reassurance that she was a Montague, but he was enjoying her presence so he didn't exactly want to ruin that. He decided to keep it in mind and ask her later.
