Otherworldly Investigations

Blurb:

Otherworldly Investigations is the creme de la creme of investigation companies. With people all over the US and the rest of the world, the company is known as the ones that can always come through with an answer. OI does not accept applications for a job, and they never publish openings. Instead, they very carefully recruit those who are already the best. And make them better.

From the inside, Otherworldly Investigations handles more cases than it seems to the world outside. New recruits are slowly introduced to the world of the supernatural in a manner designed to awaken their souls to the power they could wield. A recruit is not considered a full member of OI until they have awakened their Essence.

From there, they handle cases both mundane and mystical. Sometimes it requires a deft hand to find a spiritual killer that is destroying familial bonds, other times they are called to the scene of the most puzzling mortal murders and are expected to be able to divine the one single clue that has yet to be found, to help solve the case. Regardless, OI investigators are given as much latitude as the company can allow, so long as the case is resolved successfully. As of yet, no one has failed a case.

And then, there are the upper echelons of OI. Those who, by Fate or Happenstance, have been so touched by the supernatural and mystical that is has reflected into their power. Very rarely do these men and women get called in for mortal affairs, but instead they are given the most difficult of spiritual assignments.

Aspect 1: This is going to be an investigation led game. You'll get assignments and be given a wide latitude to solve them. Outside the investigations, you're welcome to do whatever.

Aspect 2: Godbloods and Half-Castes only.

Character Requirements:

  1. Everyone builds their character with Inheritance 2, 0 XP. Build your character with 2.5e rules as if you were an Exalt, but not a Solaroid.
  2. No merits/flaws without specific permission.
  3. Everyone gets Resources 3 to denote your salary with OI.
  4. No freebie purchases of Ox-Body.
  5. All Crafts are rolled into one.
  6. We will be playing with Simplified Astronomy, Firearms, and Drive from Shards.
  7. No mutations that make you obviously un-human.
  8. No half-Caste Alchemicals. :P
  9. Everyone needs to have a minimum of 7 dice before charms in at least two different investigation type skills. Whether that's Cha+Investigate or Dex+Stealth for snooping around, I need to know why you were recruited into OI.
  10. Ask any other questions.

Books:

  1. Obviously, you need Scroll of Heros
  2. Your particular Inheritance's splatbook.
  3. Shards of the Exalted Dream for the new skills.

I'm currently toying with an information broker idea, with lots of contacts and Web-Fu skills.

Knew I forgot something.

I'm toying with the idea of a lawyer character -- a highly-educated, extremely well-connected young woman, raised in a big East Coast power center by an ambitious and demanding single mother. Long-term goals would involve breaking free of her mother's controlling influence (through working to advance justice, instead of working to advance herself alone), and finding her father. (Assuming her unknown father wasn't the one who recruited her in the first place.)

How prevalent are Artifacts going to be in your world? I was wanting to put a couple of points into a Soulsteel computer that has an AI to it like in some of the warstriders, that helps me to perform my investigations and Web-Fu better. Would this be allowed?

Alright this game seems to be meeting the quality standards set by the site. Seems like a pretty cool investigation game if I might say myself.

This is set to Awaiting Players.

If it can be seen as part of the mortal world, it's alright.

Let us know when you have enough so we can move you onto the ST area :) !

Hmm, still need to do some more reading on Arcanoi, but am thinking about a ghost-blood or abyssal half caste might work.. medicine and tracking skills based.

I'm going to wait until I see at least some more detailed information on a couple of characters. If I don't get at least three good players, I can run this as a single thread game instead of needing a forum... But then I can't make you guys come up with a fun banner. Crap. :P

Do any of the 2.5e character creation changes apply to god bloods and half castes? (I'm guessing the BP costs are the same as stated in scroll of heroes, but are there any free specialties, virtues and WP works like the new version?, do limits on ability scores apply as listed in SoH?)

If the character creation rules apply to an Exalt in general, it applies to you all. Solaroid specific stuff does not.

So -- what template seems to fit my crusading attorney? Solar-aspected Essence seems an obvious choice...but are there others less obvious?

*ponders*

Just so everyone knows, I have a ghost blooded character about 90% written up. I specialize in computer work, with my AI. What part of the world are we in, so I can start to set up my background story? Are languages going to be a factor in the game?

Ha, that would be brilliant....! :D
...if there were Terrestrial Half-Castes, that is. :(
I wouldn't have suggested it if I wasn't going to allow it. There is an alternate rule about them.

The southern part of the US currently. Languages might be a factor, but not at the moment.

Sherwood, my WiP ghost blood is here. Feel free to let me know if we're going to be doing overly similar things. I can take it a more half-caste route if need be.

No overlap there, Feantari. I went in a very different direction with my WIP.

This one sounds fun. I'm thinking of going a thief/con-man gone legit. No idea what kind of half-caste or blood yet. Where did you say those Half-Caste Terrestrials were, Lochar?

I have the game crunch done for my character, but the background still needs a bit of work. I put my points into a Necromancy spell, along with a high Int, Lore, and Investigation rolls. That, with my spiffy computer AI, and I have the beginnings of a nasty little vampire. Do you want what I have in a PM?

Sure, that's fine.

Also, Terrestrial Half-Castes are mentioned on page 109 of Scroll of Heroes. Basically, build them the same as any other Half-Caste. Please note which elemental aspect you have. I won't be hitting you with the mote surcharge but it'll still have an effect on you.

Just in case anyone doesn't pick up how you're getting your powers.

OI recruits, and then opens you up to the world of the supernatural in a way that awakens your Essence. Some people in the course of this, or later on due to continued exposure, have their power reflect what they have been dealing with. That makes you the Half-Caste, or demonblood, or whichever.

None of you were born that way.
