Recap of the story so far:

The colonial world of Verent is suddenly attacked by a smaller Covenant battlegroup. Located near the Inner Colonies (but still far out to count among the Outer Colonies) the planet has managed to steer clear of the ongoing Human-Covenant war.

While the exact reason for their attack is unknown local UNSC forces rally to defend the planet alongside several other external UNSC forces currently on Verent partaking in a military exercise. Together bracing against the Covenant onslaught while preparing to evacuate the civilian population.

Thirteen hours after the initial report of an invasion the Office of Naval Intelligence deploys a team with Section Three's Sensitive Recovery Group. Having been tasked with retrieving a secret ONI weapon currently stuck at a remote outpost on the planet's surface this team of veteran ODSTs and senior ONI operatives attempt a daring mission to collect the weapon and escape before time runs out.

Upon arriving at the isolated township of Mountaineer's Rest- located far and high up within the local Jigsaw Mountains- the SRG team finds the ONI outpost empty aside from two stragglers of which one is killed during a short engagement. After a thorough investigation the weapon is nowhere to be found and all trails point to it having been stolen by Dr. Bernard Kinsley.

Kinsley is a genius in his own right, having earned his infamy within ONI R&D.

At the same time a trooper squad from the 99th Shock Troops Division- ODSTs sent to Verent to participate in the exercise- are sent to the township to scavenge for supplies, unknowing that ONI agents are nearby.

Before the SRG team can regroup and before the 99th STD troopers manage to seize any supplies a Covenant recon party approaches Mountaineer's Rest. Half of the dismounted troops are drawn to the ONI compound situated on the outskirts of town whereas the other half begin to sweep the town for any Humans in hiding.

The SRG team engaged the enemy head-on, utilizing the ONI compound for cover as Grunts with heavy weapons attempt to storm the masked military buildings. Meanwhile the 99th STD ODSTs outflank and kill several Jackals as well as a senior Elite.

As both skirmishes draw to a close Captain Yasir, commanding officer of the 99th's 7th Shock Troops Battalion advance on Mountaineer's Rest having been drawn there by the firefight.

At this point the SRG team has established contact with its orbital support- the ONI prowler UNSC Tangible Excuse- whom in turn have been reinforced by a recently arrived UNSC battlegroup sent on a parallel ONI assignment. Having been informed that the weapon had been seized prior to their arrival, Captain Gentry of the Tangible Excuse work with Captain Danielsen of the UNSC Empire to divert resources ensuring that the SRG team can complete their mission.

While the SRG team awaits extraction from Mountaineer's Rest they mount a daring defense using a lightly armed military truck to distract a Covenant Spirit dropship long enough for the rest of the team to severely damage it. At the same time Captain Yasir and his fresh reinforcements stumble upon a Covenant convoy en route for the town- threatening to kill the ONI team.

Outnumbered, Yasir and his men engage the convoy but not before a squadron of strike craft airstrike the Covenant soldiers in an effort to even the odds.

Now both the SRG team and Yasir's reinforcements find themselves mopping up the last pockets of resistance in the mountains before the mission can proceed.
