Realistic or Modern Operation Locker - 1 x 1 (closed)

The year was 2020. It had been 5 months since the war had started. The war was a global conflict in which the world had never seen before, not since the 1940's. The three world super powers: the United States, China, and Russia, has all declared war on each other earlier that year. There were no alliances- no help at all in this war. The rest of the world not wanting to get involved, pledged their neutrality in the war, leaving the three major superpowers to duke it out. This war would truly be a brutal one- and it was so far, only 5 months into the war. It was clear that this conflict was certainly not going to be resolved in a matter of weeks or months. Indeed, this war would certainly span over many years.

Private First Class Andrew Whitecloud was a member of the United States Marine Corps: the branch of the US military that had been deployed in the conflict. He was fairly young, only 22 years of age, but had volunteered for the Marine Corps once he learned of the war. Living a relatively uneventful life back at his home in Massachusetts, he felt that he would be able to seek thrill, adventure, and glory by joining the Marine Corps. He also felt as if he were fighting for a good cause, against the "evil empires" of China and Russia. He had also jokingly said to his family members that it was a cool way to get a free ticket to different destinations around the world. This was a war fought on all fronts, and all over the world in many different places and countries. Some battlefields were on the beautiful islands and coasts in the South China Sea. Andrew had hoped he would be deployed to one of the more scenic battlefields. But what he got was anything but. Little did PFC Whitecloud know, he would take part in one of the single greatest military disasters of the war, and the loss of life in the campaign would be devastating. The campaign, of course, was labelled "Operation Locker."

It was May, 2020. What back home in Massachusetts in the USA would bring warm spring weather was certainly not the case up in the mountains where Whitecloud and his unit had been deployed. Andrew's unit had been stationed in the Kunlun Mountains of China, and had been camping out in the mountains for a few days now, preparing for orders of an imminent attack. Ironically, despite being stationed in China, it was actually reports of Russian troops in the mountains that had been some cause for concern. Why the Russians were there was unknown, but it certainly spelt trouble for the US Marines. "God damn, it's cold," said Andrew's squad-leader, sergeant Peter Martin as he rubbed his gloved hands together. Despite all of their gear, the piercing frigid winds of the Kunlun Mountains seemed to penetrate any layer of warm clothing. It had been a few days now camping out in the mountains, and the soldiers were starting to get restless. Morale was slowly beginning to decline, and many were eager to finally see combat. Their goal? Well, the soldiers had been told that if necessary, they needed to attack and hold an old abandoned Chinese prison up in the Kunlun Mountains. Many soldiers had no idea why they needed to be up in those mountains fighting Russians in an abandoned Chinese prison at all, but the commanders and higher-ups seemed to know. The US military had hoped that by taking over and driving any Russian forces out of the prison and the mountains, that they could use the abandoned penitentiary to use as a fortress and a vantage point in one of their enemies', China's, home territory. With Russian troops driven out of the mountains, the US could be free to conduct their operations in the middle of nowhere in the Kunlun Mountains in China. The problem was, the Russian Ground Forces seemed to have the same idea. The resulting conflict would be extremely bloody, and result in massive loss of life on both sides.

It was approaching day 4 that the US Marines had been camping out in the frigid Kunlun Mountains in China. Young and eager privates were constantly reassured by their older more experienced sergeants and squad leaders that they would soon see combat, and that they just had to wait for the orders to attack. The squad leaders were on stand by listening on on COMs from high command. They were waiting for the word: the approval and the go ahead to attack the prison and move troops in. Meanwhile on the other side of the mountain, unbeknownst the US military reconnaissance, the Russian Ground Forces were also planning to attack and hold the abandoned prison. Up in the mountains, it was hard to get any sort of equipment to survey the lands up there. So, both armed forces had no visuals on the other, and no clue who- if anyone, they would be facing, and how many of them there were.

Day by day, and hour by hour, the troops were growing restless. The young wide-eyed privates thirsted for their first combat action, and Andrew Whitlecloud couldn't help but feel eager to jump into the battle too. From what he had seen back home, combat was a righteous cause, and a way to earn glory. It looked almost fun, to Andrew, to be in the rush of a battle, killing the bad guy to defend the interests of "freedom" and your country. Besides, before Marine Corps boot camp, Andrew had played countless war games and first person shooters back at home. It looked fun, and although he realized that unlike in the games, bullets in real life would hurt, and certainly kill him, he felt as if he was well-protected, and well-armed. He felt that all of the Marines there were well-equipped to defend themselves from the enemies. Besides, Andrew figured as a young PFC, he could certainly let his older more experienced higher ranking sergeants and officers lead the way.

Private First Class Whitecloud looked up at the bright sun. It didn't help much to warm up anyone, as temperatures were below freezing, and the wind howled loudly as gusts of winds seemed to penetrate through the warm layers of clothings of the Marines. Andrew leaned in, looking over at the Colonel, the highest ranked Marine there. He was listening in on COMs, waiting for any order from the commanders to give the green light for the operation and the attack. He heard a loud beep from one of the radio's and the voice of a stern man speaking. It was inaudible to Whitecloud from where he was, but it certainly seemed important. The Colonel seemed to be jolted by the message. Besides, they had all been waiting 4 days for the go-ahead call from the higher ups. "Right away sir, affirmative," he heard the Colonel say respectfully as he put the radio down. "ALRIGHT! LISTEN UP MARINES!" yelled the Colonel, his voice echoing loudly through the mountains. All of the Marines turned to face their Colonel, many of the younger ones with anticipation in their eyes, the older ones, looking like they had seen this one time too many before. "I have been informed that we have just been given the go-ahead to commence Operation Locker from the commanders." Some muffled cheers erupted from the young privates, as the Colonel put a silencing hand up to quickly stamp out the celebrations. "Squads," the Colonel continued, "group up, and get with your squads. We're moving in now." With that, the squad leaders hurried to get all of their soldiers together, as they all prepared to enter the prison just a few miles away.

Once all the squads had grouped up and prepared to move out, the Colonel gave his troops one final message. He sighed, as if he knew of the carnage that was to come. "You boys are about to embark upon a mission that no one else has. You are all heroes. Godspeed." said the Colonel as he nodded. "GO GO GO!" he barked as he waved his hands, pointing in the direction of the abandoned Chinese prison. With that, loud footsteps of all of the Marines in the squads could be heard in the snow as they marched out of the camp to get to the prison. Andrew went with his squad, as he could hear various different squad leaders yelling "Go go go!" or "Move it!" Andrew stuck close to his squad. "Come on boys, we're steppin'," said sergeant Martin, Andrew's squad leader. Andrew and his squad followed in the mass of US Marines marching to get to the battlefield. Soon, up ahead, Andrew could hear murmurs and soon the shouts of squad leaders telling the troops to halt. There it was, the abandoned Chinese prison up in the Kunlun Mountains. Andrew gulped with fear, and felt a nervous feeling in the pit of his stomach as his heart rate increased. But he also felt a sense of eagerness and anticipation, to finally get out there and experience real combat on the battlefield. He had been training so hard back in Marine Corps boot camp, so finally he would get to put the skills learned there to use in a real combat situation. "Move out boys!" said one squad leader as the troops began moving again- this time into the prison. more squad leaders yelled at their troops to keep moving as Andrew entered the prison with his squad. The footsteps of the stomping Marines echoed in the abandon cavern of the prison. It wasn't much warmer in the prison. It was exposed to the outside elements in various places. Andrew looked above and saw icicles hanging down from a section of the ceiling. It was freezing in here too.

"HALT!" said a squad leader up front as all of the US Marines poured into the opening section of the prison. Andrew and his squad stopped. He looked around. They appeared to be in some sort of storage facility. The place was certainly abandoned, but there were boxes everywhere, suggesting that the prison had been abandoned with haste and that there was no time for the Chinese to move out the items and these boxes. It looked as if it hadn't been touched in years. "Set up a base of operations here," commanded one of the squad leaders, "set up our shit over there." Some troops began setting up radio equipment and supply stations and what not, to maybe use the storage room as a fall back point. Andrew could see a group of US Marines hanging up an American flag. The star spangled banner flapped in the wind that came through the opening of the prison's storage room.

Once a base of operations had been set up, and some of the boys took it upon themselves to put up a US flag, the squad leaders gave the orders for the battalion to start moving again. Andrew picked up his feet and started running with the rest of the Marine Corps troops. "We're movin' put some pep in that step boys!" one squad leader yelled. "Come on! We're outta here!" another yelled. Finally, deeper into the prison, the Marines had reached what looked to be what was the mess hall and dining area for the prisoners that had once so long ago inhabited the prison. Soon, more Marines moved to set up yet another base of operations. The mess hall would be used as a secondary base of operations for the US Marines. Andrew watched as a group of young privates set up a US flag right in the middle of the mess hall. Andrew looked around, the walls were old and cracked. This place was practically falling apart. But he had no time to think any longer as once the Marines had set up in the mess hall, the squad leaders were once again parking orders to the Marines instructing them to move out. Andrew once again picked up his feet again and ran with the rest of the troops, deeper into the prison.

As Andrew was marching out of the mess hall with the rest of the battalion, a young looking private- a boy who looked to be no older than 18, struck up a casual conversation with the Private First Class. "Hey bro," the young private said as he leaned in towards Andrew as they were moving out, "ya ever seen combat before?" he asked. Andrew just shook his head, looking at the young man. "Nope," he replied, "this is my first deployment." he added, smiling a bit, realizing that he too was now pretty excited to fight in a real battle. The young Marine smiled back at Andrew, "Me too! I've been waiting AGES for this! I was getting antsy back at camp those four days!" the young man explained, chuckling a bit. Andrew chuckled along with him. Despite the long wait, it seemed that morale was generally high amongst the American troops.

Soon, they passed through an area and came across a large tunnel. Some squads stopped, as per their squad leaders orders, but other squads went head first and charged into the tunnel, and into a large panopticon area on the other side. But that's when things took a turn. Gunshots rang out from the panopticon on the other side of the tunnel. Andrew could have sworn they didn't sound like American guns, but then again it was hard to tell indoors. But his suspicions were eventually confirmed. "HOLY SHIT!" he heard a Marine scream in front in the panopticon area. Andrew's squad had moved into the first tunnel to enter the panopticon from the American side. But father up ahead there were gunshots ringing out as Andrew could see smoke and muzzle flashes emerging from the other side in the tunnel that was opposite from the one the Americans had entered the panopticon through. There seemed to be a mass of movement quickly rushing into the panopticon from the other tunnel. "What in the world is going on?" Andrew wondered to himself inside of his head. His thoughts were quickly interrupted though as he heard screams and expletives as he saw multiple US Marines drop dead. Gunshots and explosions rang out in the panopticon as more smoke was forming in the other tunnel. That's when he saw it: a mass of dark green uniformed troops moving into the area rapidly. They were Russians! "Holy shit," Andrew thought as he ran back to the tunnel they had originally entered from. There was lots of screaming now, and Andrew could hear two languages: both Russian and English. As he ran back to the tunnel, he could hear the screams of US Marines being rapidly cut down behind him, their lifeless bodies dropping to the floor. Andrew's heart rate increased significantly as he ran back to the "safety" of the other side of the tunnel where some American troops were keeping watch. He quickly glanced behind him, seeing the young Marine he had just talked to two minutes prior, firing his rifle. He was instantly cut down by Russian machine gun fire as more Russian troops started moving into the panopticon. It was extremely loud, and the explosions in the close quarters caused Andrew's ears to ring.

Someone had thrown as smoke grenade in the tunnel just as Andrew and a few other US Marines ran back to take safety from Russian fire on the other side of the tunnel. It was a friendly smoke grenade, meant to provide some cover and a smoke screen for the retreating Marines. Andrew panted heavily as he took cover near a wall and a group of frightened Marines, many of who seemed to be fairly young. Fighting continued on the other side in the panopticon. Andrew gasped for air. "Holy shit!" said a young, terrified looking private, "we're getting cut down like grass out there!" He frantically breathed deep breaths in and out. This was not at all what Andrew Whitecloud was expecting. This wasn't fun- this was HELL.
