Realistic or Modern (OPEN) Roseview Academy for Rebellious Royal Girls (REBOOT)

laceanddoodles

Your run of the mill Victorian lady
“When I say rebellious princess, what do you think of?”
“A girl who hates dresses, doesn’t want to get married, and only wants to be free.”
“A pretty convenient narrative, don’t you think?”
“Pardon?”
“That the only form of feminine rebellion we’ve been sold is one in which the girl must give up all her power?”

———————

The Roseview Academy for Rebellious Royal Girls was founded just three years ago. It is positioned up in the Maedkarm mountains, on a spot of neutral land. It markets itself as a reformatory school, taking in disillusioned young princesses and sending them back able and willing to do all the things a princess must do— ballroom dancing, flower arranging, tea drinking, and the suchlike. It worked well enough, and the first class of 14 girls were sent to Roseview, to great success! They returned home and, to the delights of their royal parents, no longer fought against balls and etiquette and corsets. Instead, they all seemed to take a keen interest in the running of their kingdoms, and the futures of their monarchies. The spark of rebellion seemed to be thoroughly suppressed.

In reality, that spark was far from gone, or even suppressed. If anything, it had been enhanced, just carefully channeled. The headmistress, Katherine Sewald, is the disinherited elder sister of King Bertrice of Arrowyl, an ambitious and cunning woman who has an intimate awareness of the machinations of power and politics. This is the knowledge she strives to pass on to each of her pupils, as well as an enthusiasm for ruling. Dancing and table manners are taught, but they are seen as secondary to the real wealth of knowledge— of rhetoric, philosophy, political theory, battle tactics, manipulation and guile. The girls learn how to wield the expectations placed upon royal women as weapons and tools with which to secure and maintain power.

Now with three graduating classes under her belt, Lady Sewald’s Academy is running stronger than ever. Royal word of mouth is powerful, and there never seems to be a shortage of angry, resentful, rebellious young royal girls.

The students range between thirteen to seventeen years of age, and range in status from the young cousins and nieces of kings to the coveted position of first born daughter. It matters not, Roseview has grand ambitions for them all.

This is a reboot of a rp I almost ran in August, 2020, here on RPN. At that point, I was pretty burned out, and never really got around to actually running it. I’m back now, though, and gearing to go.

There will be roles open for students and faculty, both are important. If you choose to play a faculty member, you aren’t required to read up on political theory, but it is kinda fun.

This is not based on any one era, different kingdoms are welcome to take inspiration from different places/cultures/times within the medieval and Renaissance eras up to the early 19th century. That spans... quite a few centuries. Again, research isn’t required, but can be fun. When making a princess, you’ll also be prompted to put a little bit of thought into her homeland and culture. It can be nice to draw inspiration from history. Makes things feel grounded.

All of my rps are lgbt+ friendly, and as a bisexual woman who loves history, I reject the notion that lgbt+ identities are something new or modern. They have always existed, just sometimes under the veil of secrecy and shame. Through storytelling, we can lift that veil, and illuminate the hypothetical lives and dramas of those who came before us. This is also going to be a highly fictionalized world— I am still toying with the idea of whether or not I should add in a magic system, or if that would take away from the story I hope we can tell.

This rp is intended to be an examination of some of the tropes surrounding stories about princesses and royal women, as well as political intrigue and themes of power and strength viewed through a feminine lens. It will cover a year of this school, focusing closely on character development and growth. I hope I’ve hooked you, and if so, let’s tell a story about a group of angry, disenfranchised, young women learning how to achieve autonomy and power in their lives and also on a political level!

Now for some ground rules.

——————

  1. All rules of RPN apply.
  2. Be nice be respectful out of character
  3. Swearing is okay in moderation, but remember the context.
  4. No one liners. We don’t need novellas, but please give at least a good paragraph.
  5. Anime fcs are okay, but I prefer real people, your own artwork, or artwork you have permission to use from the artist.
  6. Have fun, ask me any questions you might have, and let’s tell a good story!
  7. If you’ve read all of this, mention your favorite historical queen or princess!

Ooh! this sounds lovely! (and, while it is pre Marx... it's post-Locke and roussoue (wait... how do you spell his name? you know, the French dude who wrote the social contract?)... i can work with this. (so like nineteenth-century so... nothing pre-1800. but we still have the industrial revolution. wait... no Marx... but Robert Owens existed, and if you mix his economic theory with the radical idealism of the Jacobins and the feminism of Wolnstonecraft... hehehe.... HEHEHEHEHEH)

Hi, so uh turns out that I'm a history wonk, with a focus on European history... also... ew, you want my favorite historical monarch? no. i have none. i have some least favorite historical monarchs, but they all suck (though sum are less sucky, its the position and the power that corupts.)

oh and yeah i'd like to be a student... and also either the political theory and/or the philosophy teacher. you see, the two feids of study bounce off of one another.

Awesome!! I'll mark you down for a student and a teacher. Do you have a preference on political theory or philosophy? (And yes, you're absolutely right. They are intrinsically linked.)

great!

oh and uh one other thing... I'm not good with decisions... uuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
wait, how are you deciding what goes with what? would hume (reason is a slave to passion) (history is a dialectic process and the ultemet goal is the society that we live in now) be philosophy or political theory? what of Hobbes (humans are inherently bad) (we are born with rights and we aught to give them all up in exchange for security) or locke (humans are inherently good/moral/reasonable) (we have the rights to Life Liberty and Property and we cannot let them be taken away)?

For the purposes of this rp, political theory will have more of a leaning towards the groundwork of power, how it is gained, how it is kept, how it is lost. More Machiavelli than Locke. And philosophy will be geared more towards a base understanding of ideas and schools of thought about people/human nature, the universe, ethics, etc..

In real life, I agree with you, monarchy is bad. But since the premise of this rp is teaching royal girls how to rebel in a way that doesn't mean sacrificing their power...

i know. so political theory is statesmanship, while philosophy is ideals and morals and such. I think i will take philosophy, then :)

who says you cant have an absolute monarchy and a vaguely socialist economy? i mean, Karl Marx? Robert Owens? Flora Tristan? Who're those losers anyway. and, while yes, i shall be playing a *gags* monarchist... but monarchy emplies divine right. and as Europe is primarily Christian, and as the Abrahamic faiths have a tendency to be... misogynistic (source, I've read the bibles of all three faiths, studded the old and new testaments for a class on the council of Nicea... and was raised a jew), so unless if the queen rules behind a puppet than there is a minimal chance that a queen could rule on her own. there have always been exceptions, but uhhh... it's going to be tricky. and as monarchy emplies patriarchy... the best chance a queen would have aside from wedding would be to go the "constitutional monarchy" route, though the monarchy bit is on shaky ground, find some way to appease the nobles and promote universal suffrage. so like... house of lords, house of commons forming the legislative branch while the queen holds power as the executive branch. dual power bases are difficult to keep up, but if the queen is much beloved then you've appeased the masses, the radical groups, the nobles, and the religious people. kinda do an England... mmm montesquieu.

i'd also like to add that im on a steroid to help deal with the covid that i have so this is probably utterly intelligible... sorry

I'm not much of a political expert, but this seems like a rather audacious idea.

Do you plan on having the setting basically be "our world, but with some names changed around" or do you intend to get a bit wacky with alternate history/geography?

Hi! I'd totally be interested in this. It would be my first roleplay on this site, but I have roleplayed before, and I'm excited to get back in. I might need help with figuring out the site lol, but I'd love to join if you'd let me!

Oooh, if this rp is still open, I'd be interested in a student role and the history teacher. As for favorite queen, toss up between Wu Zetian and Hurrem Sultana.
