[PLANETARY SYSTEM: HEPHESTION]
[LOCATION: SOUTH EASTERN REACHES, SCYILLIAN SUBSECTOR]
[HISTORICAL OVERVIEW]
The planetary system of Hephestion is an oddity to the wider Imperium. Having only formally rejoined the Imperium of Man a mere 500 years ago, the peoples of the Hephestion system had remained ignorant of the wider galaxy since the time before the Great Crusade, and the Emperor of Man's ascension to the stars.
Due to the system's unique location in space, very few hyperlanes even exist that can be navigated through the Warp to reach the system, however for almost ten millenia, the ever unstable tides and storms of the Warp had isolated these people from the wider galaxy. What the peoples of Hephestion were like from the time before the age of strife has been forever lost to the onward march of time, though fragments of their lost civilization, though rare, can still be found.
Due to Warp activity rendering travel to the system impossible for thousands of years, the humans of Hephestion had remained spared from the constant bloody conflicts of the Great Crusade, the Horus Heresy, and nearly every major conflict that has raised its malicious armies against mankind, though the system itself was not fully without its own problems;
For you see, the humans were not the only species to call the isolated system home at the time. It is unclear even to this day how long the people of Hephestion Prime had been enslaved by the Orkoid species, as the Greenskins were not particularly keen on keeping records of the species they enslave, but modern scholars estimations believe that human civilization had collapsed in the region at some point prior to the Unification of Holy Terra, and for thousands of years the humans of the system were nothing more than the playthings, punching bags and slave labor force of their vile greenskin overlords. Though this had all but decimated whatever semblance of identity, history or prior culture the humans of the region had, it did over the brutal millenia forge a tougher breed of human than most.
Because of their enslavement by the Orks, trying to put the time of the great uprising into an Imperial dated calendar is folly, though it is believed that a group of the enslaved humans had stumbled onto an ancient cache of technology from their once mighty civilization, and utilizing this ancient technology, waged a brutal war against the feral Greenskin tribes that ruled them.
The exact length and details of this war are unclear, though it is implied that casualties were astronomical on both sides, and lasted many years, though through their blood and turmoil, the humans of Hephestion Prime had thrown off the shackles of oppression, regained control of their planet, and pushed the Orkoid foe back into the abyss (Although the stain of the Ork would never truly be eradicated from the planet).
The peoples of Hephestion Prime had begun to prosper, having taken control of their planet from the Orks are remaining shielded to the threats that lay beyond. Perhaps having been influenced by the Orks in some way, the Hephestian people had grown into a proud warrior culture, valuing martial prowess and self sacrifice.
Being ignorant to the existence of the Emperor and his Imperium, the Hepsestian people had developed their own pantheon of gods to follow, and possessing no knowledge of their past before their enslavement to the Orks, they believed that their planet was the birthplace of humanity, and that they were the only humans that existed in the wider galaxy.
That was soon to change, as the warp storms after millenia had begun to calm, and access to the system was again possible.
It wasn't long until the Hephestians had made first contact with the Imperium, and their entire perception of reality had come crashing down around them. Not only were they not the originators of their species, but that humans had pretty much dominated the galaxy, and were none too fond of this minor human empire that knew not of the Emperor, and worshiped gods of their own.
A border conflict had begun, and though the Hephestians had advanced to a pre faster than light space faring civilization, they were outmatched completely by the forces of the Imperium.
The conflict didn't last long until negotiations had been opened up. As proud as the warrior like Hephestians were, they knew that winning this war was an impossibility, even before the arrival of the Imperiums powered armored giants. Nevertheless, the planets and moons surrounding Hehestian Prime were rich in adamantine ore, and the presence of an STC fragment had been suspected by the Mechanicum, thus an agreement had been reached.
The Hephestian system would formally join the Imperium, and on top of the expected Imperial tithes of resources and manpower, the Hephestian people would surrender their STC fragment to the Mechanicum, and rigorous indoctrination and Inauisitorial oversight would take place so that the various gods that the locals worshiped were explained away as mere fragments of a greater being; The God Emperor of Mankind.
For the next 500 years, the system had flourished. Hephestian Prime had evolved into partly a hive world, and partially a near planet wide mining station. Millions of Guardsmen would be trained and sent out to the Imperium's many ongoing wars, the Hephestians taking particular inspiration from the doctrines of the Cadian shock regiments.
Now, Hephestion faces the first true Xenos threat to its borders since its ascension into the Imperium of Man; a Shadow in the Warp descends on the system, and alien horrors make themselves known as several mining stations and moons on the edges of the system have gone dark. Vile Genestealer cultists have infiltrated Hephestian society, sabotaging the system from within.
A scratch force of Guardsmen regiments, Mechanicum elements and Sororitas from the Order of Our Blood Stained Thorns have been gathered to try and retake the Psychic beacon on Hephestian Secundus in a last ditch attempt to send a distress beacon to the wider Imperium, and hopefully save the system before the Tyranid threat devours them all.
RULES
1. Don't be a jerk. Pretty self explanatory, show respect to the people you're RPing with, we're all just trying to have fun here. If any issues arise that you want to discuss, this is the thread to do it, just keep it civil.
2. No Godmodding. Obviously if we're on a large scale battlefield I will not bring the hammer down if your character kills a few no name fodder xenos for flourish, but generally don't just assume your character is going to come out on top in any given conflict, ESPECIALLY IF ITS AGAINST ANOTHER PLAYER. I will be running GM as well as my own character.
3. Characters must be approved in this thread before you have the go-ahead. I will post a link to the thread when its up.
4. Tag the people you are interacting with in your posts. The battlefield can be big and chaotic sometimes. To avoid clutter and confusion just tag any member you are directly interacting with at the bottom of your posts.
5. Your character might die. This is 40k, people are going to die lol. Great thing about this setting is there are always more characters to take up your Guardsman's place if you get fragged. Note, I will never just "randomly" kill your character. There will be no rng or anything like that, but if you do something stupid, or you push your luck just a little too hard, you're gonna die.
6. Have fun. That is the point of this after all.
