One and Only

Kaliyah was taking aback and it took everything in her not to fall back gasping. He had been sent to kill her?

"You are an assassin then? Of my father's enemies? How do I know I may trust you, Rodrick?" Her eyes were wide and scRed.

"You can't. But you can trust the respect and love I hold for you." He said, eyes dropping to his plate. She should know that if he hadn't hurt her by now...he never would. He'd had plenty of chances.

The princess glanced around the table at all the guests. Most were chatting and eating their meals. Some, mostly young men and envious girls, were stealing glances to Kaliyah.

"Perhaps... If we leave this room I may speak with you more. Before I consider your proposal I would like to get to know you better. Besides, you were sent here to kill me." They would have to wait until the King and Queen were preoccupied.

He nodded. "May I escort her Majesty on a stroll through the gardens after dinner?" He asked loudly. This way, the other guests wouldn't be suspicious.

The Queen looked on the two eagerly.

The meal was nearly finished and the guests were beginning to dissipate either to dance or to go home. Kaliyah turned to Rodrick, her features expressionless. "Shall we go, sir?"

She had to admit. The idea of leaving her life with so many formalities and rules was very appealing. She knew of some places in the countryside they could reside if it worked out.

He stood and offered his arm. As he led her to the gardens, he paused only to bow to the Queen and King.

Once deep enough in the gardens, he offered her a seat on a stone bench and stood in front of her.

"Ask away Princessa." He said, his nickname for her slipping out.

Kaliyah sat carefully on the bench and looked up to the man before her. He was tall and muscular, as all assassins should be. He definitely could have killed her already if he had wanted to. Unless this was an elaborate plan to gain her trust.

"Why were you sent to kill me? Why now out of all the weeks you've been here did you decide to abort your mission?"

"I was sent to kill you so the country would be thrown into chaos and others could invade. The reason I decided to abort..." He paused and took a deep breath. "I fell in love. With My princessa." He said simply, sending a shy smile her way.

The princess sat a moment, unable to speak. "You have certainly charmed many in the castle and I think... I think it's working on me as well."

She looked about to make sure no guards or servants were within earshot of the two. "What do you propose we do then?" Kaliyah asked simply, looking up at him with big eyes.

He smiled and moved to take her hand. "I have a ship. I have men. We go to my island and get married. Live happily by ourselves. Only if you want to marry me of course." He blushed again, unsure. "I can protect you, being an assassin and all...and...I have connections. I would recommend leaving you parents a note so they don't worry." He sat next to her and kissed the back of her hand.

"Not in complete isolation I hope? Perhaps we can build a sort of town ourselves? On your island. Will your men be staying with us?" Kaliyah smiled gently as he kissed her hand.

"As of marrying you right this moment, I am not sure. Perhaps in due time. But I must say your idea is very appealing to me and I am willing to try. And my parents, I do not think it would be a good idea to leave a note. We will have to come up with a way for them to think I am dead, otherwise they will mercilessly hunt you and I down."

"Or we can go to an already existing town. Say we are moving to escape...something." He waved his hand about. "And of course...however much time you need. I wasn't suggesting marriage right away. As for your parents...I'm sure I can figure it out." He ginned. "Shall I escort you back Princessa? We will plan more in the coming days."

"Well alright, Rodrick." The princess replied with a sweet smile. She rose to her feet and glanced at the castle. So suddenly her life was already beginning to change and she hoped for the better.

The two of them walked back inside and to her bed chambers. Kaliyah smiled up at him as they stood in front of her door.
"Goodnight, and thank you." After making sure no one was around, she leaned up and gently kissed his cheek.

He smiled and bowed. "Always Princess. I shall see you in the morn." He accepted her kiss and walked away, humming a happy little tune.

He headed down to his servants rooms and changed to hi normal attire, removing his fake moustache as well. He had a few missives to send out tonight, to prepare for their departure."

Meanwhile, the Queen made her way to her daughter's rooms and knocked, nearly bouncing out of excitement.

Kaliyah began packing some of her belongings. Not all of which she was planning to take, just a few items. A knock sounded on her door and she heard her mother calling.

"Come in mother!" She called as she hurriedly got rid of the things she was packing. The Queen entered, a large smile on her face.

"So... How did it go my dear?" She asked her daughter excitedly. The princess sat on the edge of her bed and shrugged.
"It didn't work out," she lied. She had decided it was probably better to lie anyways. "We are two different people."

Roderick lay down and closed his eyes, a happy smile on his face.

The next morning, he was up and ready to bring his Princessa her breakfast. Grabbing the tray from a maid, he winked at her and went up to the Princess's rooms. The maid behind him blushed and giggled.

Knocking on the door he called in. "Princessa. I have your breakfast."

The sun shone through the princess's stain glass window and illuminated her soft features. A familiar voice was calling for her outside her door.

"Come on in."
Kaliyah yawned, not even bothering to get out of bed. No doubt her brunette hair was tousled a bit, but she didn't mind.

Roderick entered and paused, mouth agape. "G-good Morning Princessa...I have your breakfast. I really must be going. See you later." He bowed, set the tray down and rushed out as if hell hounds were after him.

Kaliyah frowned as Rodrick quickly exited the room. She didn't know why, but she guessed she would find out later.

The princess reached forward and quickly are the breakfast he had brought and moved to change into more appropriate clothing.

Kaliyah left her bed chambers and made her way downstairs. She would follow her usual routine of going to the stables in the morning

Roderick flinched as he burned himself again on the stove. "Damn..." He kept getting distracted by the image of Kaliyah from this morning. She had looked completely and utterly beautiful and Roderick reacted like any man would when presented with such a sight. He had had to make a hasty retreat.

From the window, he saw her going to the stables, now dressed and smiled. "Princessa!" He called with a wave, accidentally showing the bright red burn on his arm.

Kaliyah turned and looked up at the window. She saw Rodrick waving with a bright red mark on his arm. "Are you alright, sir?" She asked him, addressing him formally because of the soldiers walking about.

With a final charming smile, she turned and head into the stables. The stable boy greeted her with a bow and a grin.

He blushed and ducked back inside. woking quickly, he rushed out to the stables. He handed the boy a note discreetly with instruction to give it to the Princess when she came back from her ride.

The note said Tonight, on your balcony, we'll plan more. All my respect and Love, Princessa

Kaliyah stood at the edge of her balcony, awaiting the arrival of Rodrick. The stable hand had given a note to her earlier in the day and it had made her blush.

The princess had changed into a simple tunic with a belt to accent her waist, tights, and riding boots. She had pulled her hair back into a sort of long braid to get it out of her face.

With barely a sound, Roderick flipped up onto the balcony, dressed in black plants and a sweater, both form fitting. He ran a hand through his hair and grinned at Kaliyah. "Princessa." He kissed the back of her hand.

"I trust your day went well?"

The princess couldn't help but stare as he approached. His clothing made his muscular build appear more prominently. She blushed and turned a little to look up at the stars.

"It was quite well, actually. And you?" Kaliyah asked as she moved a bit closer to him. She was a bit chilled now that a soft evening breeze blew aroud.
