One and Only

Kaliyah sighed and turned around, walking over to the window and peering out. Stress wasn't good.

Sabra's eyes followed her mother before peering up at Rodrick. "You're going to replace me when he's born. The whole town is. Besides, imagine how happy everyone will be if it is a boy. The heir to the Mathew's fortune."

Roderick moved to sit beside her, pulling his daughter into his arms. "Is that what you think sweetheart? No, that would never happen. You will always be my little girl. Your sibling can never take that from you. Even if it is a boyx he only gets a partion of the fortune. You being our first born, get at least half. And as the older child, we'll need your help taking care of him. We would never replace you." Roderick assured herx keeping her close. He tilted her head up to look in her eyes that matched his. He kissed her forehead. "You will akways be our Princessa." He said, looking to Kali to agree with him. Assured their 15 year old daughter.

Kaliyah turned and nodded, a sympathetic smile on her lips. "I'm sorry for being so harsh. It's hard with the child. Someday you will understand. But your father is right."

Sabra smiled slightly, happy that her parents felt that way, but she wasn't sure if she should believe it.

Roderick squeezed her into a hug. "Come. Let's eat." He bpunced upx stomach rumbling. "I hope Eloise made lamb stew!"

Sabra shuffled out of the parlor after her father, suddenly aware that she was extremely hungry.

Kaliyah followed last, walking slowly because the fatigue of bearing children was beginning to get to her.

At the table, Roderick looked at his family. "You two are good, right?" He asked, green eyes penetrating.

Kaliyah and Sabra both nodded. Kaliyah was exhausted again, and really didn't have much of an appetite. She sat at the table and tried to keep from dozing off.

Sabra ate most of her dinner. "So when did you want to invite Aiden and his family over for a meal?" She asked her father.

Roderick glanced at Kali, frowning before returning his gaze to his daughter. "Perhaps the night after next? Or maybe this weekend. We could have a dinner party." He said, nodding slightly. "It'll give an excuse for Apolline to come and fuss over your mother." Hevwinked. Kali hated when anyone fussed about her.

Kaliyah looked up, glaring at her husband playfully. "Sounds splendid; just what I need." She muttered.

Sabra smiled excitedly. "I will let him know when I see him next!" She exclaimed proudly.

Roderick looked at his wife. "He likes her! Like likes her!" He waved his spoon around petulant. "Can I torture him at dinner?"

Kaliyah shop her head in amusement. "No, he's probably a nice young man. Be nice, Rodrick. You were like him a while back." She reminded her husband, smiling at Sabra.

Roderick sputtered. "Yeah but...can I at least grill him during dinner? If he proposes to Sabra, I'm not supposed to like him!" He waved his spoon about. "She is my little girl and is not allowed to grow up."

"Rodrick, they met today. He isn't going to propose to her anytime soon. Please calm down." Kaliyah muttered softly, taking his hand in hers.

He sighed and brought his wife's hand to his lips, kissing it. "I'm sorry love...but it's hard to believe that my baby is growing up. I wasn't even around for the first 3 years..." he closes his eyes, pained memories coming to mind.

Kaliyah smiled gently at her husband. "Yes but you are with her now."

Sabra smiled at him as well. "It'll be okay, father."

Roderick pushed back his chair. He held open his arms for his daughter to hug him. "It still hurts baby. Do you remember, when you first saw me, you didn't want to hug me...."

Sabra slid out of her chair to do as her father wished. "How was I supposed to know, though? I was so young..."

Roderick pulled her into his lap, smiling. "I know. I always dreamed that when you saw me, you would cry 'daddy!' And jump into my arms." He chuckled, squeezing her.

Sabra wriggled a bit and slid away from Rodrick after a few moments. She was fifteen after all.

"I'm going to go see if I can get some sleep then. Goodnight," she kissed her fathers and mothers forehead, then left.

Kaliyah stood, softly rubbing her stomach. "I suppose it's just us now. What would you like to do?"

Roderick watched her go before turning to his wife. "I'm not sure...I never got to finish my newspaper...or give Sabra her present.!" He jumped up. "I'll be right back." He ran upstairs.

He knocked on Sabras door. "Sweetheart?"

(Sorry was busy)

Sabra opened the door to see her father. "Hello?" She asked him, her hands on her hips.

Roderick grinned sheepishly and held out the box. "I forgot to give you your coming-of-age present. I hope you like it Sweetheart." He shuffled nervously, waiting for her to opeen her present.
