It was late spring; a beautiful time of year in the kingdom, especially inside the castle walls. Rows upon rows of vibrantly colored flowers were planted in the gardens. Workers mill about tending to the plants and cleaning up the landscape. The sound of joyous horses can be heard as they prance around their paddocks. Spring was a time of hope.
Princess Kaliyah sat upon a log that overlooked the small pond in the castle gardens. A few frogs hopped about and a dragonfly landed on the princess's knee. In her younger years, the princess would have a servant or soldier guarding her at all times. But since she is much older, she insisted on having her freedom.
A young knight by the name of James walked by with his horse, flashing Kaliyah a toothy grin. She smiled politely in return. The young knights and soldiers-to-be were very cocky and arrogant around her, but she tolerated them. With a sigh, Kaliyah turned her attention back to the pond.
Rodrick silently regarded the Princess from a ways away. He sighed. "Why the hell is she not protected?" He growled under his breath. This made his work harder. If he could not see her guards, he wouldn't know when she was truly alone.
Recently, he had taken a job as a manservant for the Princess's rooms. He had charmed a handmaiden to allow him access when ever he wanted. Now he just had to kill her.
Taking a peek at the sun, he sighed again and made his way to her, a polite grin on his face. "Princess. Your governess is looking for you. She sent me to find you. It's lunch." He said, adding a small bow. "I'm to bring you to her private terrace."
Kaliyah looked up as Rodrick the manservant spoke. She nodded curtly and stood, a welcoming smile spreading across her lips. "I suppose it is lunch time. Alright, let us go."
She was a kind princess and hardly regarded the servants as well... Servants. They were what kept the castle running after all.
After smoothing out her plain blue dress, Kaliyah looked to Rodrick to lead the way to her governess. It had been a very lonely morning, so she was very much looking forward to the lunch.
Rodrick didn't falter once, leading her to the Terrace. "Is there anything I can get for Her Majesty and Lady?" He asked, bowing as Kaliyah's governess came into view.
The governess blushed at Rodrick, her being only one of the many who had fallen under his charms. Rodrick smirked. He knew he had half of the castle under his thumb already. He knew he would regret killing the Princess....after all... she was very pretty.
Kaliyah seated herself beside the governess and turned to Rodrick. "No, thank you sir." She replied politely.
The princess frowned thoughtfully as the governess blushed at the sight of the manservant. Perhaps there was something between them? The thought made her smile slightly.
Over the past few weeks, Kaliyah had noticed the way the maids and women of the castle regarded this particular man and it made her curious. He was quite handsome, she had to admit, but as per custom the process was not allowed to act on such impulses.
Roderick bowed again before leaving. Apparently there was a ball tonight and he was needed to help prepare. He hoped to use the ball as a cover for the assination. He just wanted his money for this job. It was his last.
With the payoff from this job, he would retire, with piles of money to live off.
Kaliyah stood in the middle of the Queen's chambers as maids ran about altering the dress they had stuffed her in. She wasn't too fond of big and elaborate clothes, but if she appeared in her normal plain gowns there would be talk.
With a sigh, the princess made a face as her mother tightened the corset around her middle. She was already slim and a bit curvy in the right places, but the Queen insisted on showing it off even more. Apparently there would be many suitable young men at this ball.
Roderick had altered his appearance a bit and stood in his room, fixing his caravet. It would be easier to get the Princess alone if he were of the same station. Thus tge disguise. He grinned and made his way to the ballroom, fake mustache firmly in place.
Evangel stood outside of the ballroom doors, taking in deep breaths. The Queen, King and herself would be entering the room all together as was custom.
Two sharply dressed men opened the grand doors as another man announced their presence. The King and Queen entered first, the princess second.
All eyes were on the three as the people bowed in respect to their rulers. Young men grinned at Kaliyah as they rose, looking her from head to toe.
"Kaliyah, go mingle." Her mother instructed as she gave her a gentle push. Sighing, she turned and strolled toward a group of young men and women her age.
Roderick stood just behind the group of people that the Princess was heading toward. He stepped forward to interceot her. "Majesty, may I have this first dance?" He asked, bowing and extending a hand to her. He kept his voice at a deep baritone.
Kaliyah stepped back as the man approached her. He was attractive... And vaguely familiar, but she couldn't place it. With a polite nod, the princess took his hand and allowed him to lead her toward the dancers.
A few of the men she had left behind in the group seemed disappointed at the princess leaving, so she turned and blew them a dramatic kiss.
Kaliyah turned her attention back to the man and spoke quietly, "May I inquire as to what your name is, sir?"
Roderick caught her kiss flinging and almost laughed, leading her. "Lord Marius, Majesty. From the northern lands." He smiled and moved into position, hilding ine hand while the othee was at her hip. Hee skirts brushed against his legs and felt a slight blush on his face.
"Nice to meet you, Lord Marius." Kaliyah responded with a slight curtsy and a warm smile. She was always keen on meeting new people, especially attractive ones.
The princess moved her hand to match his and they began to dance. She stole a quick glance at the Queen who was smiling her approval at her daughter dancing with a man.
"I apologize if my mother or father make a scene from you and I dancing. They claim I am far old to be without marriage." Kaliyah rolled her eyes slightly and laughed quietly as she turned her attention back to the Lord.
He smiled back, green eyes twinkling. Roderick almost forgot why he was here.
He nodded. "It's alright Princessa. I understand. You are far too beautiful to not have secured a marriage, if I may be so bold." He spun her under his arm before pulling her close. He sent a smile to the Queen, who preened at him.
Kaliyah blushed at the man's statement. As he drew her nearer, her blush deepened. "Well thank you, Lord Marius. That is very kind of you to say,"
She could feel the stares as the two of them spun about in their elegant dance. The trumpet sounded to signal that the dancing was over and the royal feast was to begin.
The princess curtsied to her partner and moved with him toward the group again. The King stood tall and addressed the large group before him. "Welcome, welcome! I hope you have been enjoying yourselves thus far. But now it is time for a grand feast! Please be seated and we shall begin!"
Roderick simply smiled. He placed a large, warm hand on the small of her back to guide her to the table. He pulled out her chair for her before sitting next to her. "So tell me about yourself, Princess?" He adked, quietly.
After being seated, Kaliyah turned to the Lord. "Well... There isn't too much to tell. My status as a princess is about as exciting as my life will become, I'm afraid."
The princess was careful to sit up straight and hve her hands folded neatly in her lap. All eyes were on her tonight, after all.
Mstiis grinned at her. She truly was beautiful. "Are sure Princess? There must be something about you that no one knows!" He teased, acting as any lord would. He leaned closer, still maintaining a proper distance.
Kaliyah considered his question while watching the servants pass out part of the meal. Come to think of it, she wasn't too hungry. When the servants moved toward her, she shook her head to indicate that she didn't want any. Confused, they moved on.
"Well alright. But this is purely confidential," The princess began, "I've never really enjoyed people the princess. Most of the time I wish I led a normal life." Kaliyah continued quietly. "It's just too much formality and regulations. Oh well, right?"
Roderick eyes widened and an idea popped into his head. Lowering his voice he smiled shyly. "What if I could get you a normal life. With me perhaps?" He raised an eyebrow.
"What... Do you mean, sir?" Kaliyah responded softly. A normal life? The idea sounded wonderful, but she had only just met the man. She needed more information before accepting or rejecting his proposal.
The Queen seemed to be watching their every move, smiling like it was the happiest moment of her life. Luckily she couldn't read their lips nor overhear their current conversation.
He shrugged, sipping soup before answering. "I can take you away from all of this." He gestured. Screw killing her, they'll just elope and live happily on an island somewhere. "I have enough resorces just disappear. Find an island for the two of us. Do whatever you want." He smiled. "Laugh, your mother is looking at us."
Kaliyah glanced over to the Queen and faked a delighted laugh and charming smile at Rodrick. "Your real name is not Marius now is it, what are you here for? What are you after?"
She had to admit, the idea was persuasive. Yet, if the princess suddenly disappeared there would be an uproar.
He smiled. "Princessa, it is me, Roderick. I was sent to kill you but you have charmed me. Sadly, now I desire only you. And your happiness of course." He gave a mocking little bow, hoping she wouldn't scream. "Truly, I can take you away from all of this. You would rule only my heart." He swore.
