This role-play will be about the relationship between companions: dragons and riders, riders and other riders, the entire squadron, a whole fort, in the rising tension between two countries, Oren and Serba, and all the attempts to make sure that war does not occur.
This might require playing multiple characters (a dragon/rider pair being most common). If you would like to play a rider or a dragon and have someone else who'd like to play your partner, you are welcome as well.
I would also expect three posts a week in order to have your characters be considered active, but more is never a bad thing. If a hiatus is needed, please let me know.
The era of this is a mix between modern and past: there is no electronics in this world, but there are some modern conveniences such as light/power and plumbing.
Please read all tabs and information before deciding to join in. Any questions or something you would like further explained, do no hesitate to ask.
This was inspired in part by Temeraire, a series I would definitely recommend.
I hope that some of you are interested. I have invested a lot of time in building this world, and look forward to further hashing it out with all of you interested.
I will be making the thread shortly but I wanted to see if we had any interest before starting.
Please be interested.
Gana: The World
Gana is a planet very similar to ours. Water covers a majority, with four continents and some island groups. The main continent of our story is the largest continent, Laeris.
Laeris has five countries within its borders.
Serba is to the northwest, a vast forest for the most part, with the spine of the continent (a large mountain range) separating it from the northeast. There are five main cities spread to each cardinal direction and in the center. Main exports are their specialty timber and unique veins of ore from mining the Spine.
On the other side of the Spine of Laeris is Polla. Polla has a smaller amount of land mass, but it has islands off the coast that it lays claim to as well. There is a stretch of desert for several miles out from the Spine, that then becomes plains. There are three main cities, all along the coast. Their main exports are seafood and their navy is rival to none.
Farthest north is the cold country of Briggad. The people of this country are rather mysterious nomads that rarely venture south to the other countries. Very self-sustaining, and very protective of their country. Distrusting of most outsiders. No one from outside the country knows if there are any main cities or hubs of trade. What does come out of Briggad is beautiful craftsmanship, showing that their people have an eye on detail.
To the Southeast is Juval. Juval lays claim to some desert that scrawls its way down Polla, but underneath that is a tropical environment with rainy season and dry seasons that covers most of the land. Main exports are agricultural in nature.
Oren is the final country and lays beneath Serba, to the west and slightly more north than most of Juval. It is the most densely populated country, with a tempered climate and much of the land being flat near the coast and hilly toward the middle where the Spine reaches its end. Very much a center of commerce for the entire continent, having a massive trading city (Cervis) at the bottom of the Spine towards the center of Laeris.
Dragons have been around as long as Gana has been. They are an extremely intelligent species, and use to be the enemies of mankind. Some dragons eventually became allies, starting the first Fort with the creed of Dragons and Riders being equal in status. There are still wild dragons, but they do not live as long as Fort dragons.
Being longer-lived, dragons often take multiple riders in their lifetime. Riders may or may not be family members of those from before. Dragons also have the option of getting rid of their rider if they deem them unworthy or dishonorable. If that's the case, it's often that the rider is not accepted by any other dragon.
Aerial Corp dragons are arranged in 3 categories: Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Lightweight.
Heavyweights. Often used to carry large amounts of people, supplies. Only one to each squadron because they require a lot of space and care.
Middleweights. Used as escorts and formations around heavyweights, sometimes scouting. Multiple middleweights per squadron. More often than not fighters
Lightweights. Commonly used as messengers or information-gathering. At least one lightweight is assigned to each squad, usually two.
Types of Dragons:
Dragons aren't magical beings. They are creatures long ago created and adapted by natural selection to become what they are now, similar to many species of different animals on Earth today.
Broadbacks: More often than not heavy-weights, they are very large, and provide a good deal of room for many passengers or to carry supplies. Very thick skin, hard claws that can claw out rock and stone. More stocky of body. Found wild along the spine.
Vipers: Nicknamed after the poisonous snakes, Vipers have abnormally long fangs for dragons. Within these fangs is venom that they can inject into others if they are in close combat. It also helps to lock into enemies if their venom has been depleted. They are relatively more delicate and snake-like, long and thinner on average, but pack a punch. Mid-weights to light-weight. Native to Serba and Oren.
Furios: Fire-breathing dragons. They mix some highly flammable liquids in their multiple guts before projecting it in flames through their mouths. They are highly sought due to their usefulness in attacking towns, cities, and fortresses. Also extremely avid fighters. Usually on the outer areas of a formation, mid-weights to heavy-weight. Usually home in the wild in the deserts of Juval and Polla, but they are migratory and have been seen in all countries.
Fliers: If one is flying long distances or quickly, fliers are the dragons to do it. Several times smaller than their other counterparts, fliers are used as messenger dragons, and their riders are responsible for knowing all manner of correspondence message signals. The most reliable and important aspect of quick and proper communication among Forts and Squadrons. They are also less dense and more light than their bigger brethren, bones exceptionally more hollow. Common to all countries.
Camos: Dragons that have the natural ability to change their skin colors to camouflage are known as Camos. They are more vulnerable than other dragons due to the fact that they do not have thick scale hide. These specialty dragons are lightweights, and are often used for stealth missions or information-gathering. All camos are from Juval, and most camos can trace their lineage back to two specific lines out of the country. Exceedingly rare.
If you have an idea for another species of dragon, please post it or message about it, along with information and what classification you would call it. :3
Riders are often recruited young.
They start out as Grooms in the dragon barracks, learning how to care for dragons. This apprenticeship usually goes for some time, 4-5 years on average, and starts as young teenagers. They learn how to keep dragons fed, cleaned, and get to know the various types of dragons they will come into contact with.
After some time and demonstration of retaining enough knowledge, grooms become Pages. Pages are older teenagers who then go into a side of the rider barracks for schooling. All Pages are given an education on world events, geography, strategics, history, etc.
Once pages have passed their courses and have been deemed ready, they are ready to be Riders. There are multiple ways to become a rider.
One is attracting a dragon's attention after a hatching. Dragons grow quickly and can be ridden a year after their birth. However, the parents can be very particular because they want their children to have the best riders.
Another is if a dragon has lost its rider and decided to allow the new rider to take the deceased's place. Often times this requires a rider to have some merit to them that has garnered the attention of a dragon to request them.
A third is lineage. Often times, dragons who grow close to their riders will take on those riders' relatives if or when the first rider retires or dies.
When not in combat, dragons and riders are often used to serve the public: hunting dangerous animals, helping to build things, escorting through wild areas(because there are still wild dragons), entertaining with aerial stunts, etc.
I would appreciate some of your feedback in whether or not to open this up to other races, or strictly humans. That being said, I am minimizing the fantasy: no magic. Everything should have a scientific background; however, this not being Earth, and having dragons, I am open to the idea of elves, dwarves, etc.
The Forts are large, almost city-like areas. They are built in positions with the greatest possible benefit for both humans and dragons to access easily.
There are multiple areas in Forts: Dragon Barracks, Rider Barracks, Training Yard, Nesting Sands, Stables.
Dragon Barracks: Large caves that the dragons reside in when not on duty or training. Oftentimes, squads that are close will either share caves or reside in caves close together, depending on the accommodations and space available.
Rider Barracks: Housing for dragon riders. Higher ranks get larger rooms and more commodities, but even new riders get the option of rooming with a roommate or by themselves. Also a part of rider barracks is the mess hall.
Training Yard: The vast majority of the Fort's sprawling acreage is the training yard. This consists of both on ground fighting areas (both rider and dragon) and aerial space for practicing squadron formations.
Nesting Sands: The sands are areas off of the dragon barracks where female dragons will lay their eggs after mating. Depending on if their squadrons are deployed, they will usually lay with their eggs until hatched. If they must be called away to war, they will instruct another female that they trust with laying with them. These substitute females are often called Nursemates.
Stables: Stables are where the livestock are often held and kept track of. There is pasture for them to graze, but with all of the dragons around, they are kept close eye on and locked up at the end of the day.
The scene to start the role-play, Fort Kivon is one of the oldest Forts, and is at the bottom of the Spine in Oren, near the edge of the border with Serba.
Fort Kivon is a hollowed out west side of the mountain with many caverns and caves dwelling deep into the earth, and a home of dragons for centuries before the pact between the two.
There is a five kilometer sprawl of plains at the mountain's feet also considered part of the fort. A thick and tall wall surrounds it, with several entries from the other three directions, north, west, and south. The Rider Barracks are huddled at the base of the mountain, the stables off to the farthest south area next to the wall.
There is a stream that runs from the mountain's top to the bottom, ending in a lake at the northwest corner where it is common for dragons to bathe and fish.
The nearest city to Kivon is Cervis, the hub of commerce for the continent. A great diversity of people live there, and in turn, Kivon has Riders of many backgrounds, although they are all sworn loyalty to Oren when becoming a Rider.
