I'm fine with either a small independent crew or a crew that is part of a bigger pirate faction. Both allow for the character I have in mind to come to rights.

I too like the idea of both a small independent group of anarchists the galaxy at large would call "pirates" (more respectable pirates that want the no-rules without the swash-buckling are called "anarchists"), and a small crew which is loyal to something of a galactic gang butting heads with a rival pirate gang.
My character isn't developed enough (beyond lizard priest man) to make either choice unfortunate.

I'm still here, and honestly i think if we're going to go with the idea of pirates and such in space...i'd probably go with independent pirates for now, just to give everyone an easier time with character development then progress from there.

Though, that's jut my idea. Others might have something else.

New here, so I don't think my word gets as much say, but I agree with going as independent pirates. We don't need to share with 'allies' that way, and we get all the loot to ourselves!
