a casual level roleplay about soulmates and college clubs

basic premise
In an alternate world where you and your soulmate share injuries, from bruising to scars, nothing is considered more important than finding and marrying your soulmate. Religions condemn relations outside soulmates, parents harm their children so that they have unique scars so they can find their soulmates easier, and even the government punishes people who enter into long term relationships with people who aren't their soulmates under the Red String Laws. These punishments take the form of being fined for everything from getting a place together, to having a child. However, some people don't agree with this system. Mostly college students, really. And so, in a show of freedom and rebellion against the system, they do the only thing they can do: They form a club.

This is pretty much a slice of life taking place at a college, all the characters are part of a club which wants more rights for those without soulmates. As a result, pretty much every single member of this club would prefer not to marry their soulmate, or for some other reason disagrees with the system. Maybe they're a gay girl whos soulmate turns out to be a guy, or their parents intentionally scarred them so they could find their soulmate easier. Whatever the reason, they know that the system is broken, and they'll do what it takes to bring it down, or at least do their best to while also balancing school, work, and relationships.

Rules
-I will be randomly assigning soulmates via computer generation. That being said, if your character is attracted to 1 gender only, you can specifically request that your soulmate is a different gender.
-Please, no self harm in this. It can be in your backstory, but keep it out of the roleplay itself.
-Follow the RPN rules for content. Obviously.
-The entire point of this roleplay is that your don't agree with the soulmate system, so your character shouldn't fall in love with their soulmate if they do fall in love.
-Be nice. As much as your character is permitted to be the hugest jerk to ever exist, you really can't be.
-I have a mod (Gupi), she wont be joining for a bit becaude of reasons but please respect her when she does get here.
-Multiple characters permitted, but you probably shouldnt do any more than 3

Written Appearance: Standing at five feet and one inch tall; weighing in at 117 pounds, Addilyn is somewhat small. But, she's rocking an hourglass figure, as she developed early. Her upper arms, near her shoulders, and upper tighs are covered in what are now faint self harm scars, and the word why carved into her left tigh. ​

Personality: Addilyn is a rather happy go lucky person. She's always smiling and laughing with you, and there doesn't seem to be a mean bone in her entire body. However, that doesn't mean there's a naive woman who you can take for granted. She's head strong, intelligent, opinionated, the kinda girl who didn't take shit from anyone. But, like everyone, she has her demons. Addilyn comes from a harsh background of self destruction, substance abuse, and chronic depression. While no longer in as bad of a place as she was, the remnants of what she's been through get through.​

Personal History: Born and raised in a small town up north, Addilyn's life starred off a little rough. Her mother and father bit Her worked long days, which left her to be taken care of by her elderly grandmother, and then her uncle u til her father was laid off when she was about three. He took over the responsibility of raising her, as her mother was barely around because she had to take up two jobs because ever father's criminal record got in the way of him getting a job. Thankfully however, he was able to notice that his little girl wasn't like the other little girls. Addilyn was diagnosed at the age of three with depression, and at five, it was officially recognized as Chronic Depression.

Ten years old she starred cutting to deal with the lack feeling something in her young life, which would carry on into her freshman year of highschool where she started drinking. During the summer, her best friend had had enough, and thanks to actually being a senior, was able to get Addilyn into rehab. It took her 18 months to fully recover, but once she did, it was rocky road to keep herself on the right track. She only relapsed once, when she was raped by a member of her family, but thats all in thr past. Addilyn is focuing on her future, and is going to college to study Criminology.​

Reason for joining No Strings Attached: So, Addilyn isn't entirely against the whole soul mate thing. Just, the laws surrounding the soulmate thing. If people were allowed to have relationships outside of their soulmate, than Addilyn wouldn't be part of the club. But, she also has her own issues; She's scared of a long term commitment to someone she may not be worthy of.

1. Addilyn lives off campus with Zeke. They both needed a roommate, and one of their friends sent them up. It's been pretty cool so far.

Written Appearance: Ana is short standing at only 5'3", covered in metal and a little odd looking. She has mousy brown hair falling down past her shoulderblades, a square shaped face and big blue eyes. Her lips are kind of long and thin and she has quite a large forehead. There is a large and noticeable scar on right hand and another scar on starting from the corner of her right eye to the bottom of her cheekbone. (PS if anyone can photoshopthis on please do! )

Personality: Eliza is independent and stubborn. She lives for debating and arguing, though she doesn't admit it. She doesn't create arguments on purpose as such, but she does enjoy being in them. She finds it hard to admit when she was wrong and is extreamly tight lipped about her own emotions and thoughts. Although she finds it hard to express, she cares for her friends and hopes she can do something good for all of them. Any mention of her scars will usually be met with a subject change, any further hassling and you might end up with a scar yourself.

Personal History. Born illegally to a couple of non-soulmates who lied their way into owning an apartment in both their names, Eliza's name was fraught with trouble. The govenment almost took her away from her parents several times but the couple was quite smart and managed to win their court cases. They, however, have not had it easy and wanted Eliza's life to be good. Groing up, Eliza was preached to about finding her soulmate. They said that she couldn't even hold hands with a boy or girl until she found the one. Eliza always had other ideas, and when she was old enough to form romatic bonds with others she decided she knew what was best for herself and started dating a girl.

Scared, her parents punished her. They scarred her in multiple places and told her that she was not allowed to see anyone unless they had the same scars. She was in isolation for a long time. When she turned 18 she got a job and moved out immediately. She cut all contact with her parents off.

Reason for joining No Strings Attached: Her parents are poor and have no benifits because they are not soulmates and they are living together. Because of the trouble they've been through, they don't want the same life for her, so they have scarred her face and hand in order to help her find the one quickly. She resents them for it.

Personality: Jasper is the definition of a gentle giant. He doesn't like conflict or being put in the middle of an argument. If he can he would avoid getting violent. Jasper is affectionate with his friends and family. He enjoys giving and receiving warm hugs and head pats when attempting to cheer someone up. For the most part Jasper is a rather quiet person. He can usually be caught in his own little world. Daydreaming is something that he does a lot. Because of this people usually believe that he isn't intelligent, not that it bothers him. He was never one to care about what others said about him.Jasper in reality is actually very smart and insightful. He can hold deep conversations and give wide advice when the situation calls for it. While Jasper isn’t the most talkative person he is a good listener. He’s always willing to lend an ear when someone needs to get something off of their chest.

Personal History: Jasper is the son of immigrants. His mother was born and raised in Ghana while his father was born in Scotland. The two of them met during a cruise. The two of them immediately hit it off and kept in contact when they returned home. Eventually they got together and moved to America, where Jasper was conceived. His family was a lower middle class. His mother worked in a nursing home and his father a mechanic. His life was that of the average child. In school Jasper was teased because of his looks but he learned to ignore it. He made good grades throughout elementary and high school. He was able to get a full academic scholarship. Jasper is attending college to become a author and artist.

Malik is a skinny kind of guy. He reaches 6 feet but sometimes likes to joke that he’s taller. He works out so he has a slight muscular build. Not enough to make it completely noticeable but he’s not one that can be pushed around either. He has a sharp face, his dark brown eyes always seeming to be more piercing and cold than anything. HIs face is littered with freckles, sometimes giving him a boyish look though he likes to fight against that. On his left forearm are five scars, each one in a random spot with raised skin in varying red colors. His other arm is adorned with tattoos.His nails are just a tad bit yellowish.

Malik doesn’t always smile so those that don’t know him think of him to be a cold, mysterious asshole! Nope, scratch that. It’s a lie. While Malik has his own resting bitch face, he can be quite the charmer. He’s very sociable, choosing to talk to those around him and get to know them or even meet new people.

He’s got a sort of sarcastic kind of tone, always finding something ironic or funny. So to others, unless they understand dark humor, he’s usually on his own. He doesn’t mind it though since he likes to have his independence often. He has never been one to follow behind one person. Being a sheep will never compare to being the Shepard. Not to say he doesn’t have any idols or role models. He just doesn’t see the point in following after someone the same age as him and treating them like a God.

Like any other person, sometimes he isn’t in the best mood. When he gets like that Malik tends to be more quiet than usual though he does his best not to bring anyone else down. But he’s an open book with his heart on his sleeve so he has no problem talking about his problems. He likes talking anyway.

All in all, Malik is a pleasant person to be around. If you need distraction than he’s your guy or if you just need a good friend he’s there too.

"Does anyone ever truly like their history?"

Malik was brought into this world by his mother Joyce Morocco and his father Devon Johnson. They lived in a quaint and quiet town that had a thing for gossip, cliques, and all around problem making. This would be fine and dandy for the couple as they weren’t particularly a part of the town themselves. They lived about half a mile away from the closet neighborhood, enjoying their peace and quiet. Sometimes the town kids gave Malik a bit of a hard time for living so far but he didn’t mind it and was able to push through it. He’d become a very bright student, making multiple friends and being top of his class. Life for him was wonderful.

Until he reached the age of nine. His parents were soulmates but to his father that meant nothing. His father had come to fall for another woman- one that wasn’t his soulmate. He’d, later on, tell Malik that he hadn’t done it on purpose but love was love and there was only so much he could take. His father would finally leave the home, running off with the woman he loved. Though his mother tried to hide it, the truth would come out and spread through the town like wildfire. He along with his mother would be ridiculed and scorned for his father’s actions. It would take less than two weeks for Malik’s mother to have moved them out.

They would move across the country, now in a small apartment. The story of his father would be that he was killed, dying of a heart attack so there would be no questions about the scarring. As they tried to adjust to their new life, Malik would sometimes find his mother mutilating herself (small cuts and burns) out of spite of knowing her ex would receive them. It made him afraid of finding his own. It made him afraid of love.

Around the age of 16, he’d find someone he came to fall for harder than he’d meant to. They would be the one to take his virginity, something he’d deemed important and special between them. After their intense moment, having bonded more than ever, they’d wonder if they were actually soulmates as both did not have any blemishes to distinguish them as one. At this point, Malik would have joined the crowd of bumming off cigarettes from people to smoke them. He’d light one and without hesitation (As he’d been so sure this was his soulmate) he’d let the burning embers press against his skin. His clear skin would finally be scarred yet through the pain he’d look over to the one he loved- only to see they hadn’t gotten one. Heartbreak would immediately wash over him and he’d find himself begging for them to stay by his side. In a moment of delirium, he’d press the butt of the cig on his arm a few more times before it was taken away from him.

Staring the one he loved in their eyes for one last time, they’d share a bittersweet kiss before leaving him alone. Resentment would then be his mistress following him through the years as he hated the thought of soulmates more and more. So cumin to college and seeing there was a club against it? it was only right that he joined. It was only fair. Because he had a very different opinion of his soulmate and others. He had words that he wished to speak. And with that club? He had the power to do it.

Appearance

Standing at 5'7, Ana's lanky build makes her look even taller than she really is. Honestly, with pale hair and skin, as well as her dark eyes, the woman almost seems skeletal; the main thing which weighs down her form as concrete is her tendency towards dark, if not black, clothing. Most of her scars are covered by her clothes, the most noticeable of those being a stab wound under her rib cage on her right side. Aside from that, she has a scar on her lip that looks like it got split and never really healed properly. She has two tattoos; one's a stick and poke she got in high school of a ghost, the other a professionally done silhouette of a german shepard's head. She also has a piercing through her left eyebrow, and an industrial in her right ear.

History

Ana was born to a single mother in Waterlyn; whoever her dad had been, he wasn't her mom's soulmate. As she grew up, Ana's mother seemed to have an ever changing cast of boyfriends, most of whom treated Ana with indifference at best. This lead to her developing a distrust of men, which she still has to this day. Despite that, though, Ana was always very close with her mother, and grew up to respect her for raising a child on her own income while she also suffered under the Red String Laws.
As she got older, Ana became branded as "the bad girl", with a penchant for getting into fights, rarely caring about class beyond a desire to graduate from high school, and a somewhat stereotypical love of black clothes and leather jackets. On Ana's end, it was less of a genuine rebellious streak, and more of a "I like these clothes and high school's kind of stupid" kind of deal, but she didn't have any reason to fight the label. Pair this with the fact that she was from a fairly poor neighborhood, and didn't seem to really care what people said about her, and she ended up with a label of "future burn out" that ended up sticking, and people believing that she couldn't care less about anything. What she did care about, though, was the Red String Laws, or getting rid of them at least. As a result, she started the first version of No Strings Attached at her high school, where it lasted for about two weeks before she was forced to disband it because none of the teachers there would support the club if she was the founder.
Now in college and mostly free of the burnout label, Ana started up the club again, convincing a law professor that this was a worthwhile club to have, and how it could actually make a difference in the world.

Personality

With a "do no harm, take no shit" view on life, Ana tends to be cheerful, if a little snarky. She's got a bit of a easygoing personality going, battling every problem with some sarcasm and confidence, and acting like she's never had to deal with a negative consequence in her life. Most people assume that this is because she really never has, while in actuality, Ana believes that if she acts like the things in her past didn't screw her up, then no one can tell anything bad has happened to her. Although Ana stands her ground and won't let anyone treat her as if shes inferior, she's fairly even-tempered and it's hard to really rile her up. She typically doesn't go looking to start any fights, though once she's in one she'll give as good as she gets. In fact, the only things that really seem to set her off are insulting people she considers to be important to her, most notably her dog. Ana cares deeply about projecting an invincible and unruffled image at all times, and it's incredibly rare that she lets anyone see her drop that mask; if you do happen to see that, and she doesn't get pissed and throw something at you, it means she really trusts you.

- Ana formed the club because she didn't want anyone to have to go through what she and her mom went through when she was growing up, and because she kind of thinks the idea of fate is incredibly stupid. As far as she's concerned, the concept of soulmates is a scam.
- Lives off-campus, with her mom and her dog, Cerberus.
- "Works" at the campus radio station. Mostly ends up playing rock during her shift, but in her better moods she will take requests.
- Majors in history, as that's always been her favorite subject. Isn't entirely sure what she'll do with her degree yet, though.
- Smokes, and has been insisting that she's quitting since high school. At this point, it's pretty obvious she's not.

Written Appearance: Nora normally stands at 5"7, but wears short-heeled boots to add an inch to her height. She has a slim build, and brown eyes. The tips of each finger of her left hand has a small scar in the shape of a X.

Personality: Nora has something of a grudge against her soulmate. While she's not the most friendly person around, she'll never be openly hostile to anyone who doesn't share her scars. Her personality is a lot like an orange, actually. Hard on the outside, but soft and mushy on the inside. Nora may act like someone stuck in the Rebellious Teenage Phase™, but she cares a lot about the people around her and won't hesitate to help someone if they need it, or even if they just seem like they need it. She's become a master in the art of pretending not to listen to others, while actually listening intently.

Personal History: Nora was born into a family of soulmates. Her parents were soulmates, as were her grandparents and their parents. To her family, marrying soulmates wasn't about love, or even about the laws forbidding outside relationships. Her mother saw it as part of her culture, and the only way she's ever known. It never occurred to her that there was any other option. So, when Nora learned to talk and started questioning everything about the system she never blinked twice at, it was something of a problem. Her father's initial solution to her curiosity was to take up religion, and Nora spent most of her childhood in church.

Still, Nora was resistant. She questioned why her parents didn't sleep in the same room, and why they married each other at all. Her father gave up trying to sell her on the soulmate system when she was seven, flat out ignoring her questions about the subject. Her mother though, had a very different reaction. She started questioning her own marriage, and her decision to start a family with someone she didn't love. It drove her to near insanity. In trying to keep up the act that she loved being married, she pushed Nora harder towards her soulmate, and even went as far as outright introducing her to others her age to force a connection. Her mother stopped talking to her father altogether. She became more desperate the older Nora became and the less interest her daughter had in finding her soulmate.

One day, she took Nora aside and carved an X into her thumb so she would be able to find her soulmate easier. Her father threatened to call the police when he found out what she'd done, but never actually did. Her mother took her out more often, after that, as if finding Nora's soulmate would save her crumbling mental state. A year later, and each year after that, her mother a X into one of her fingers, then became depressed and distant when Nora's soulmate didn't appear. Nora left home on her eighteenth birthday.

Skye's dark brown hair is cut short, and spikes up at the front. They have pale skin and stand at the height of 5'6. They have hazel eyes that can look like both blue and brown in different lights.

-Background Info
Personality: Skye has an optimistic look on life, and prefers to see the brightside. They are friendly and enjoys talking to anyone. Skye is generous and finds joy in helping others, not to mention is a great listener. They care for all their fellow club members and does their best to help them if they can. They are usually happy and cheerful, however are able to be serious if the situation asks for it. The thing that get's Skye the most happy is video games and spending time with others. They are organised and usually tidy, preferring to not live in a pile of dirt.

Personal History: Skye was born with both female and male parts, leaving them to decide which gender they would like to be identified as. Skye chose to be identified as neither and goes by they or them rather than she or he. Their Father supported them, however their mother wanted a girl not a... genderless person.

This lead to the Skye's parents splitting up when they were fairly young, and them living with their father. Throughout their childhood they were bullied for not being of either gender, however they did not care much. They got rid of their loneliness from having no friends by spending time playing video games. You could almost say that video games saved them from becoming depressed or realizing that the situation they were in was unhealthy.

Skye's mom throughout the years never visited or made any contact with them after the divorce, and due to Skye's father having to support them both was unable to spend much time with them, but they didn't really mind and enjoyed every second they could spend with their father.

Skye's soulmate, however turned out to be a woman with fiery red hair and emerald green eyes. Her face was covered in freckles, and she was very friendly, however she was in love with another. Skye of course told the girl she could have love the way that she wanted it. That was the last time that they ever saw the girl, but not the last time they ever thought of them.

After much thought Skye decided that the idea of loving who you want that was started by their soulmate, was something they wanted to.

Reason for joining No Strings Attached: They no longer have a soulmate, and like their soulmate wishes to fall in love on their own free will. They have yet to find anyone who peeks their interest yet, but is secretly exited for finding their true 'soulmate'.

Written Appearance (build, distinctive marks, etc): Casper is 6’3”, and the kind of thin that worries most parents. However, despite their skin and bones frame, they are not a stick, with noticeably wide hips. They tend to wear sweaters, and often look confused. Their skin’s pretty clear, though it’s laden with mostly hidden scars. Most notably, there are many large ragged marks encircling their waist, as well as a heart carved into the palm of their hand. Their torso, back and upper arms in general are riddled with scars of various sizes and shapes in general. More scars TBA

Background Info​

Personality: In three words, Casper is neat, artistic, and lonely. They're in love with the idea of love, and constantly fall in and out of its many types, even if it’s “wrong”. Despite the importance of soulmates having been drilled into their head from a young age, Casper still doesn’t understand what the big deal is, and often finds himself questioning the very idea of it, especially when it affects various other types of love in the ways it does. Additionally, they’re very trusting. They put a lot of their self-value into their ability to draw- which, honestly, just makes it easier for their parents to tear them to shreds. Casper has a ginormous inferiority complex, and barely sees themself as a person, their forgetfulness and self-perceived stupidity only adding to that. They don't have many friends, despite craving touch and attention, mostly due to self isolation, a defense mechanism developed to protect them from bullies.

Personal History: Casper grew up in a fairly nice area, one of the eldest children of an older pair of accountant soulmates. The pair was deeply in love- that love didn’t necessarily extend to their children. Casper’s childhood was rough, and there was a lot of verbal, emotional, and sometimes physical abuse that only got worse when Casper hit the age of actually being able to do things.

In addition to doing poorly academically, Casper also suffered from a common side effect of being odd- few friends and many bullies. Throughout their childhood, their closest friend was their next-door neighbor, who was only a couple years older. He wasn’t good, and a majority of Casper’s older scars come from him.

Their friendship ended around the same time they began to develop breasts, and it was around this time his parents became more… invested in locating his soulmate, if only to make it easier to get rid of them when the time came.

A heart was carved into the palm of their right hand when they entered high school, and a few more marks were added over the years. In their junior year, they were diagnosed with osteoporosis after breaking their hip, and more diagnoses quickly followed.

Reason for joining No Strings Attached: It’s hard for them to imagine one person being meant for them, especially when they love people pretty constantly, and the hardships that go hand in hand with being someone other than your soulmate seem wrong to them.

Written Appearance (build, distinctive marks, etc): Standing at 5’10” Zeke is above average height, but nothing to special. Having been in sports for his entire life Zeke does have a solid build and is very strong. One of his most notable features is his myriads of tattoos all over his body as well as his intimidating disposition. He has a long horizontal scar across his neck that is still slightly visible even with the tattoo meant to cover it.

Personality: Although Zeke had a tragic past he tries to keep those emotions bottled up as he would rather live in the present. It is easy to categorize him as the dumb, jock, who got into college based on talent, but that is far from the truth. He can be thoughtful and caring (in his own way), as easily as he can be condescending and rude. (Something he believes is just being straightforward) Although he has ability, he doesn’t always put forth the effort. If its something outside of sports, he would prefer to only do the bare minimum required, considering anything above what is needed a real “hassle.”

Personal History: Zeke’s parents both grew up in a strict household who obeyed the law dutifully. Needless to say, that in comparison to the average person, they found each other quite easily. In this society, you could say they were the perfect example of a family. Even Zeke did not have any qualms about soulmates, or the systems in place. In fact; he even thought it was efficient to know right away who you’re supposed to be with. It was too much work to go through the drama anyway. However, when he turned 15 he realized how warped this world really was. His father had discovered his mother was cheating on a regular basis with a close friend. He could have called the cops, but he loved her. He endured for another month or so before he finally broke down. After Zeke’s mom was confronted with the issue, she admitted she wanted to run away with this new man. She left; however, she must have made it no further than a few feet before Zeke witnessed his father stab himself in the stomach and fall to the ground. His parents did not die; however, that might have been a blessing compared to the remaining years of his life. His parents got back together, presumably because his mom now feared for her life. Neither of his parents were who they once were. His intelligent, confident mother, was now a fearful shell of a woman akin to a slave. His calm, collected father, was now an obsessive, paranoid, foul beast.

At age 16 Zeke became more rebellious and shut off from the world. He would put his focus into school, and sports to keep his mind off things at home; however, he would find trouble quite frequently. He began to show his displeasure with the idea of soulmates as a whole. Fearing Zeke was going to go down the wrong path and end up taking someone else’s soul mate akin to what had happened to him years ago, Zeke’s father gave him his first scar. It was nothing too grand, just a moderate crescent cut on his left hand. Zeke figured almost every kid goes through this at some point, so he just brushed it off. However, after another year of showing no interest in finding his soulmate Zeke’s father began to engrave a tally mark on his back for each day he went without a soulmate until he left for college. His father, after seeing that not even this “ritual” would move Zeke, began to carve random scars out of rage, including a large scar across his neck somewhat visible through the plethora of tattoos Zeke now possesses to cover up his past.

Zeke still contacts his parents from time to time to make sure they’re still alive. Other than that, he keeps contact with them limited, and refuses to step inside his former home.


Reason for joining No Strings Attached:
There is nothing wrong with loving, or having a soulmate, but no one defines what this is exactly. Sharing injuries, apparently, makes one your soulmate; however, sharing experiences, laughs, and even love itself does not? Aside from the “curse” itself, the laws forcing two people together might be the very cause for disdain with the people they are supposed to end up with if it is to be set in stone. Many relationships are born of negativity, reluctance, and a misguided sense of responsibility. Humans are creatures who desire freedom, and even if a cage is a benefit to us, we will seek to escape that cage even unto our own death. He believes that there should be laws restricting the enormous power soulmates already have over one another. Instead of creating the unnecessary and suffocating laws further promoting control over another’s freedom. Love is now an endangered species synonymous with a lifeless system, no longer akin to the powerful emotion born of the heart.

Appearance​

James is extremely tall, reaching the towering height of 6"10, though he doesn't look gangly or awkward thanks to his slightly muscular frame. He's slim, but isn't slender, and his skin has a dark olive tone. With a history of self harm, both of his arms are heavily scarred. Shaggy describes his hair well- long, thick and unkempt locks of a light hazel brown with natural blonde highlights. His eyes are a warm chocolate brown, they have a kind, comforting gaze. Unfortunately, his bangs tend to cover his eyes. Due to this James has developed the habit of running his hand through his hair, originally to brush it off his face, but now more out of habit or discomfort. He has a thin face with soft features, but a strong jawline. His voice is slightly high-pitched, small, and soft-spoken.

Personality​

James is quiet, so much so that one would think he was mute if he didn't answer questions. He generally gets along with people fairly well and doesn't take too long to get comfortable with them. He smiles constantly, and can talk with anyone. James is comfortable with silence, so it's rare that he'd start a conversation. He's actually very confident, but his predisposition to silence makes people think he's timid. He does, however, get shy and awkward when embarrassed or caught off guard. It's quite obvious when he is, as he tends to stutter and make mistakes when he tries to speak. James is pretty serious and sensitive; he takes what people say to heart. He suffers from serious depression, and refuses to take his medication for it.

History

James is the result of an affair, and it twisted his view of soulmates from the beginning. Coming from a very religious family, his mother was shunned for years for having a child out of wedlock, to a married man, who wasn’t her soulmate. His grandparents only returned to his life when his mother did marry her soulmate, but step-father was a very abusive man, both to a young James and his mother (Maria). He left not long after she fell pregnant, and his mother was once again shunned from her family. He despises the Red String Laws and soulmates as a concept after spending a lifetime watching his mother suffer because of them. His only relief was his father, who had always tried to stay involved in his sons life, and keep up a relationship between James and his younger half-sister Carduus.

He lives off campus in a small apartment with his sister, just a few streets away from his childhood home. He regularly visits his mother and baby sister, and is slowly integrating Carduus into their small family. He joined NSA at his sisters insistence, but doesn't do much but attend meetings and make sure she doesn't fight with anyone.

Appearance​

Carduus has long, sandy blonde hair that falls straight to her waist, though the length is hardly obvious as she's prefers to keep it tied up, or braided. She is is thin, frail and delicate looking, and just barely as strong as she looks. Consisting mostly of legs and her short torso, Carduus isn’t very tall for her age, just reaching 5'1, but she has the beginnings of a womanly shape and a decently sized bust. Her skin is lightly tanned, and her eyes a cold, harsh violet-blue. Her voice is high, and slightly nasally. Carduus' speech is usually modulated, words honeyed. Always about her neck is a fine silver chain supporting a small circular locket, engraved with a swirling thistle pattern. A lot of her jewellery is custom, silver decorated with the same patterning and accented with amethysts.

Personality​

Carduus is a natural-born leader. Levelheaded and strong, she’s never been one to follow or go with the crowd. Carduus can be very loyal and kind to those she likes, but is generally unbelievably cruel to the people she doesn’t. She’s not very trusting of others, and when her trust is betrayed Carduus is utterly unforgiving. As she’s rather sadistic and manipulative toward people, it’s difficult for others to become close to her. Alternatively, she has a soft spot for animals. She takes great advantage of the fact that she is in such a high position in society, and revels in her status. Despite this, Carduus is secretly very lonely and quite insecure. Though Carduus is intelligent, she can be naïve and sometimes struggles to grasp simple concepts. Carduus tend to put on an act when dealing with people, becoming very flirtatious and ‘fake.’ It's rare that people get a glimpse of the person beneath the facade she puts forward, and that is only if you're brave enough to look her in the eyes.
She is also lefthanded.

History

Carduus' parents are soulmates, and that is their only connection besides a love of money and Italian heritage. They live in seperate homes and rarely interact unless it’s to argue over their daughter or Jonathon’s multitude of affairs, and his illegitimate son. Neither of them care much for the concept of soulmates, but her mother insists Carduus must marry her soulmate. Carduus isn’t interested at all, especially considering her mother doesn’t care at all for her. Seeing how unhappy her parents are, as well as the way her older brother James’ has been treated because of the way society views soulmates she decided that soulmates were unnecessary.


She lives off campus in a small apartment with her brother and their two cats, and joined NSA as another act of rebellion against her mother

Written Appearance: Rose stands at a solid 5'4" and weighs 116 but she doesn't let that stop her from taking charge or speaking up. Her body is rather lean yet toned from the sports she use to play in her childhood. She has long chocolate brown locks that end at her tailbone and has a slight wave to them. Her eyes are a lighter brown that adds to her innocent appearance, making her seem very friendly.

Personality: Rosalie is the type of girl that acts in a way that conflicts with her rather docile appearance. She appears to be sweet and innocent when she's actually pretty upfront and blunt. There is no hesitation for her to say what's on her mind or to be so honest that some may take offense to what comes out her mouth. She also has a mischievous streak in her and she would often wind up in trouble but look extremely sad when she was scolded. It's always in good fun and no one ends up seriously hurt. Doesn't get extremely angry often but it's likely to happen when she's pushed to the limit. Is usually an overall nice and sweet girl that is considered childish. She also doesn't care for the personal space of others and has been compared to koala quite often with the way she clings and leans on her friends.

Personal History: Rosalie grew up in the loving Ahn household that consisted of two overly doting fathers and a younger half sister. Both of her fathers had chosen the same surrogate so that their kids would be related. Her dads were very successful in their working environment and their relationship so it came as a surprise to them when Rosalie decided that she didn't need to find her soulmate. When she was younger, finding her fated husband occupied her mind a lot but after going through a good amount of boyfriends she had grown tired of looking. Rosalie had decided that it was too much of a struggle to find the one for her and essentially gave up on finding true love. It's gotten to the point that she doesn't even date anymore since it'd be a waste of time to end up with a boy that will eventually leave her for his own soulmate.

Reason for joining No Strings Attached: She hasn't found hers after all this time and finds the idea that 'you'll meet the one you were meant to be with eventually' as a hassle. She now finds it hard to imagine someone out there that's a good match for her.

Long hair, blue eyes, pale skin. He has several scars around his neck and arms, and he tells people his parents did it so it was easier to find his soulmate, but that's hardly the truth. He's skinny, doesn't eat much, mostly because he indulges in the reputable sin of smoking, and doesn't dress up much either. Impressing people isn't his forte.

Personality: Prone to anger, has depressive episodes here and there, which immediately can be followed by joyous exuberance that can't be explained. Enjoys writing and photography, but lacks confidence to show anyone his work, or just doesn't trust anyone enough to indulge them with his inner musings. Is extremely guarded, keeps to himself most of the time, as the times he's let himself get attached to people have always ended badly. Smokes routinely even though a lot of his family has died of lung cancer, and intermingles drinking whenever he can get his hand on the sweet nectar. Despite his general hate for people, he joins the club only to get away from the other idiots in college, and to have something to do besides wasting time away in his dorm while others are living the "College Life". He also hates the government, despises the routine of society, questions why he's even in college, and thinks himself superior to others.

Personal History: Grown up without a mother most of his life, and doesn't have much contact with his father now that college is able to distance them. Has lived poor most of his life, and only made it to college through a scholarship program. He hasn't made many friends over the years, and the only one he did have for a string of time killed herself after all the pressure of soulmates got to her. He hasn't tried making friends since.

Reason for joining No Strings Attached: Doesn't want to be tied down by a seeming fundamental part of life. He doesn't enjoy the idea of the universe telling him who he can and can't love. He wants to decide for himself. And he hates those who are for it, reinforcing the idea that there is such a thing as a "soulmate" and that you have to be attached to them, and only them from the moment you're born.

Written Appearance: Alana is a little on the taller side with a slim/athletic body. She reaches about 5'8 with long dark hair that can be worn either curly or straightened to perfection. Her eyes are a dark brown hue a (a few shades darker than her skin) while her smile is said to be as bright as the sun; deep dimples adding to the appeal. She has a tiny slash like scar on her right hip from the one time she snuck out to a party back in high school.


Personality: Alana is a stubborn and driven person whether it be in sports, work, studying, or rebelling. Though seen as a little bit spoiled due to her family background, she maintains a proper balance of overconfidence and understanding that there are limits even she can't handle. Upon first meeting she comes off as brash and sarcastic thanks to her casual uninterest in the system that is the possibility of her soulmate appearing in front of her, but once she makes a friend Alana remains as loyal as possible to the companionship. Her real charm is her hatred of losing; Alana is naturally competitive and usually allows that to overrun her voice of reason if she isn't careful enough. Surprisingly enough she does have a great sense of humor. She adores music, something her parents disagree with, and sports (swimming and gymnastics respectively).

Personal History: Born into a wealthy family Alana has always been brought up with everything already set up for her. Her parents marrying one another simply because they were soulmates was the biggest tragedy she had ever experienced. Her family had everything anyone could ever want except the love Alana felt was very much needed. She witnessed her mother pained with secretly falling in love with someone else but being unable to be with them; while her father's only love was his wealth and image to begin with. Alana being their only child was set to carry the burden of keeping their squeaky clean image alive; marrying her soulmate and having a successful career. Once it was found that she joined the opposing side her parents made her choose between living a proper life or being a "heathen" and cutting all ties to their family. Alana, in hopes to find her own path, chose the latter.

Reason for joining No Strings Attached: Freedom and to piss off her parents. Alana feels that the silly soulmate rule is exactly like the trap she's been living in at home her whole life. She wants nothing to do with anything already preset for her and the first step was joining any type of rebellion she could find. This school club was the perfect chance for her to finally live.

With long, dark curling hair always looking slightly too unkempt, the bags under her eyes only partially hidden by thick black glasses, and a wardrobe that seems to mostly consist of paint splattered jeans and sweatshirts, it's amazing that the 5'7 girl manages to look anything other than exhausted. She manages, of course: a few of her other favorite expressions are disgust, irritation, and boredom. Her olive toned skin is always marked up with something, whether it be a hastily scribbled reminder, colorful paints and pastels from her latest project, or merely pencil lead smudged across her face when she tried to rub the last bit of sleep from coffee colored eyes.

History

Gayle grew up with parents who were soulmates, arguably loved each other, and in their attempt to be a normal family, had a single child who they completely neglected. Both her parents were too busy to pay much attention to their child growing up, and what little attention she did receive was pretty much in the form of being scolded. As a result, she grew up with a perfectly decent, well-off family that she felt completely detached from, a feeling which, when she realized wasn't the case for most kids her age, extended to the majority of the world population. Gayle ended up bottling most of her emotions, as she didn't have anyone to talk with about them, and just used the money her parents gave her to focus on something she could use as an outlet; her art.
A decent enough student, Gayle is currently attending Waterlyn University under an academic scholarship, which she chose to do because it was on the opposite side of the country from her parents.

Personality

One word can be used to describe Gayle: irritable. It doesn't seem to take much to put the brunette on edge, though that might be due to lack of sleep. She doesn't put much stock in niceties, and seems to have little to no mental filter, always speaking exactly what's on her mind no matter how rude it comes off. While sporting a generally grouchy exterior, Gayle can become something verging on nice towards those she likes, especially after she's had her third cup of coffee. The energy she saves by not trying to spare your feelings, she puts to good use- Gayle is devoted to her art, and it definitely shows, as it's one of the few things you can get her to happily talk about. If you manage to convince her you're worth her time, you honestly won't see much of a change, but it is there, and her loyalty to her friends, while seeming somewhat grudging, is unwavering.

- Gayle joined No Strings Attached for two reasons; The first is that she spits upon any idea that your fate can be decided for you in any way, shape or form, and the second is that she shared a class with Ana back when she first started the club and was essentially harassed into joining. Remarkably, despite her seeming disapproval of pretty much everyone in the club, she doesn't appear to regret joining.

Physically- 5’9, a little under average height for men, warm brown eyes, keeps his hair in a partial undercut style to balance out the wavy curly locks of hair. His body has a mix of beauty marks and light colored freckles that show more on his shoulders. Hair is usually a wavy mess on the top of his head. As for scars there is one in the shape of an “X” on the back of his neck, only a little bigger than a quarter, to the left near his hairline that looks like it has been recarved in over the years. There is also a big burn scar over his right calf that starts at the heel and stops a few centimeters away from behind the knee. There is also a tattoo on his right wrists that is just, “XOXO” that really ties into that grungy edgy look ™.

Apparel wise- Ears are pierced with wood grained studs that change in different wood types or styles depending on that day, but they are always studs. He always sports denim in some way, usually with a well worn medium blue denim jacket with fluff lining. T-shirts are usually obscure and shift from odd restaurant shirts that have been tie dyed to outdated meme shirts with splotches of glitter glue or paint stains. For some reason, is always wearing a different pair of timberlands for each day of the week.

Personality: He has a laid back sort of composure, does not mind taking his time where he can, is not necessarily lazy, he just thinks before he speaks. A lot of the time he can be humorous or quick to give out friendly quips, but for the most part he is pretty quiet. He does better in smaller controlled groups than one on one or large groups. He’s easy going and not hard to get along with, but wont be a pushover when push comes to shove, he believes in sticking up for yourself first before anyone else, which is something more for petty arguments then serious discussions and squabbles.
Personal History: Grew up in a small countryside town where his dad owned a flower parlour and his mother ran a car mechanic shop. His family life was quite chaotic, his mother had three more children after Benji, two girls, Iris and Lilly and the youngest a boy, Marcus, making Ben the eldest child. His parents were what they called on the fence about soulmates, for the most part they taught Ben that if he wanted to find his soulmate they would support him, but never really pushed him into it and would hint that if he was not interested in settling with his soulmate to just say that he had “never found” his soulmate. When he was a kid he insisted on having a scar on his neck, and be redone, “just incase it went away,” but stopped around the age of thirteen.
He is a momma's boy, spent his toddler days worrying his mother by playing in her shop, at the age of 8 he got the burn on his right calf from a scalding hot coffee spill from bumping into a customer in his moms shop. After that he had to spend more time at home or his dad’s flower shop, the same treatment carrie don to his sisters and brother.
He grew up being best friends with his sisters, became more distant when his younger brother Marcus was born, but he would be put on babysitting duties a lot. During his “rebellious” phase as a teen he had what society would call “problematic” friends. Two of his friends were in a non soulmate relationship with each other romantically, Benji and his other friend Mikeal became the two third wheels that had a good time with their friends. Of course because of this there was a lot of unwanted eyes on his friend group, mainly the couple, so Benji became hyper aware very quickly on what kind of mistreatment his friends went through for being a non soulmate couple.
Through his friends and experiences with them he learned that there were different kinds of bonds he wanted to seek out with people, as well as how soulmates are different and unique to every each person. Currently he still keeps in contact with the couple he was friends with in high school and lives in an apartment with Mikeal while he goes to school and Mikeal tries to get his life together.

Reason for joining No Strings Attached: Benji joined No Strings Attached because he thinks its just logical to let people be with someone who is not their soulmate and that people who want to be with someone who is not their soulmate should be allowed to without social and legal backlash for something they can't help feeling.

Therapy animal: Technically he has a registered therapy animal, it is a bearded dragon he calls “Squib,” or “Squish,” he even has an official, “Therapy Animal,” cape made for him.

Hobbies- Thrift shopping, collecting odd or new flavors of gum, taking a dance or yoga class every semester for his “me” time, but really he’ll still do it in his free time. Walking in on flash mobs, drinking coffee at 1 in the morning, indulging in nostalgia, questioning what hobbies really are and if he actually has any. He’s pretty sure eating cereal in his pj’s and telling Squish about his day counts as a hobby more than a pastime.

Extra: He has a vape pen but only used it to see if he can trap the vape into bubbles, should have googled it instead, now he keeps it on his person to offer people who do vape, but doesn’t want to just sell it or give it away sense it's an interesting conversation starter. Also he spent $40 dollars on it so... gotta get his moneys worth out of it somehow.
