No experience

Hello everyone, how's life treating ya?

So, I may have found myself GMing a Dark Heresy game simply because it seemed no one else was going to step up. This is a bit of a problem for me because of two things:

- I have no GMing experience what so ever.

- I have no Dark Heresy experience what so ever.

I really need some help here in terms of learning the system and how to make the game a good one since I really do want to give this my best shot. Please, I need some help here. I'm looking for cheat sheets, examples of gameplay, GM advice in general and in Dark Heresy specifically.

Thanks tonnes.

This will be a bit difficult. It might be best to look up the Dark Heresy wikipedia if you want specific information on how to run the game. General GM'ing information can be given, but it's best if you get info on GM'ing a dice game because the players have different preferences and mindsets than dice-less ones.

I have no dice experience, so I apologise =/ All I can say is, talk to your players. See what ideas they come up with and run with them.

Use Second Edition if you have it.

Decide if you're going with tongue-in-cheek black comedy, or deadly serious tone.

Start the characters at Rank 3 if you're using 1st ed. Can't stress that enough. Ignore anything but the core for now.

Consider using one of the pre-gen scenarios from the back of the book to get some practice in.

General advice, as usual:

- Don't call for a roll if failure isn't equally as useful to the plot as success.

- Lie to the characters, not the players.

- Establish tone out of character as well as through your descriptions, to make sure everyone is on the same page.

- Remember that party balance is a myth and use the asymmetry for drama

I'll offer more when I get home from work.

You might also remember the golden rule of this sort of thing:

No plot, no matter how extensive and well-considered, will fully survive an encounter with your players. Prepare to dance.

1. Read the core all of it and wiki the setting up if you aren't famliar with 40k

2. Decide what your focus is going to be

3. Read the book again

4. make shit up as you go along your plot thread

5. profit.

However if all this feels overwhelming there is no shame in backing down or delaying
