KAI
HENEGHAN

location: school's parking lot ; mood: sleepy, miserable and cold
outfit: x

There was a brutal chill in the air that Saturday morning. The winds nipped harshly at Kai’s cheeks and nose until they were a rosy red. He sniffled, shuffling in place to ward off the cold that was beginning to settle deep into his bones but still a violent shiver overcame his tall, lean frame. Frustrated from the cold and his impatience that was beginning to snowball, he huffed causing white clouds to escape his lips. The condensation floated towards the sky just as a few snowflakes began fluttering down. Great. Now it was snowing and they still weren't being let on the bus.

So far, the only thing the students had been allowed to do was put their luggage away in the compartment underneath the bus. What the hell were they waiting for? It was 7:25 in the morning and they were supposedly leaving at 8. Shouldn't they have started to board the bus by now? Miserable, Kai pulled the hood of his sweater over his head and tugged on the drawstrings to pull the material in close to his face as a pathetic barrier from the howling winds. “I hope the bus doesn’t blow over while driving,” He mumbled to himself. Some girl beside him overheard and chuckled nervously, but agreed.

The rhythmic hum of three coach bus engines, the heady smell of diesel and the sleepy murmurings of his peers all filled his senses, but they all began to fade away as his mind drifted off from exhaustion and boredom. This was such a fucking joke. Kai had been so hyped when the school had initially announced Disneyland as the Class of 2018's senior year field trip. Thrill rides; sticky, greasy foods, warm weather, girls in short shorts, he'd been ready to enjoy it all. But apparently after some budgeting issues they were now headed further North up the state of Colorado for more cold instead.

Kai didn't understand. His broke ass school couldn’t afford Disneyland, but they could afford installing a new marble fountain for no reason whatsoever in the middle of the courtyard... okay. Don't get him wrong, he wasn’t complaining about their new field trip destination. Whiteridge seemed chill, pun intended and he intended to make the most of it. It just would have been better to stick with the original plan of going to a place with a warmer climate, at least to him.

"Thank you for your patience seniors!" Kai was ripped from this bitter thoughts by the loud, nasally voice of Principal Lee. He was a short, round man with a toupee on his head that looked more like a blonde tumbleweed. It seemed to be in a losing battle with the winds and Kai was just waiting for it to blow off. "We misplaced the attendance sheets, but they have now been found. We will start taking attendance so that you can begin to board the buses. Students whose last names fall within the range of A-H please see me, I-P please see..." Principal Lee continued relaying his instructions, but Kai blocked him out in favor of waiting for him to finish so that his attendance could be recorded and he could get his freezing ass on the bus.

Finally, Principal Lee began taking attendance. He took one look at Kai's face and chuckled, recognizing one of his old troublemakers. “Ah! Good morning, Mr. Heneghan!” The man checked off Kai's name as he continued speaking in a jovial manner. “I bet you’re excited. The trip will be as you kids say lit.” And then he fucking dabbed. It happened so quick and awkwardly and when he finished he looked at Kai as if he expected a positive response from the teen. Kai wanted to cringe. Principal Lee chuckled. “Smile more son! It’s a beautiful winter morning and we get to spend it with each other!”

"Yeah. Great." Kai gave a distracted nod, focused more on jogging up the stairs of the bus as the doors finally opened. He welcomed the warmth and shivered out the last remainders of the cold under his skin as he beelined to one of the seats in back of the bus. He nestled himself in the corner, taking the window seat and leaving the outer seat open to whoever he liked enough to let sit there.

DONNOVAN
MAILE

location: car -> school's parking lot ; mood: nervous, excited?
outfit: x

The best part about car rides was the opportunity to gaze out the window, all melancholy like, pretending to be in a movie. However, Donny couldn’t do that because his obnoxious brothers were blasting trash trap music and it was messing up his vibe. He liked to listen to something more peaceful and quiet in the mornings, indie r&b maybe, but that suggestion had been shot down. "Sorry bro, majority rules and your tastes suck." His brother Jacob had told him. This was why he needed to get his license. His brothers never let him take control of the aux cord when either of them drove him somewhere.

He sighed and took a long sip from the cold coffee drink in his hand. It was a sweet and delicious mocha frappuccino, his favorite. On the side of the cup in loopy cursive letters read ‘Dummy’. It was supposed to be a funny play on his nickname that his friend Jules liked to tease him with. He smiled fondly. She was the one who made him this drink. She decided to continue working over break instead of going on the field trip since she wanted to save up as much money for college as possible. He understood he just wished she wasn't basically the only friend he had, well, besides his other favorite cutie Cara.

He absentmindedly played with the straw with his tongue, whirling it around in the cup. He didn't have too many people he could hang out with during this trip. He'd cut so many toxic people off this year and, as a very social person, he really hoped he could make some new friends over these next few weeks. He was likeable, right?

He slid down in his seat, his nerves bubbling up in his stomach causing sharp cramps. Ah, it was too early for his old friend Anxiety to show its ugly face but he couldn't help but worry about the outcome of the trip. His brothers must have noticed his distress because the music suddenly turned down. “So are you excited for the trip, Don?” His brother Louis asked. His voice turned wistful as he continued to speak, “I remember for our year we went to Hershey Park.”

“That sounded fun.” Donny mumbled around the straw in his mouth, grateful for the distraction. "And yeah, I've never been skiing before so that should be interesting!"

Jacob piped in. “Hell yeah it was fun. Someone smuggled in some alcohol, there was wee-”

“Whoa whoa whoa!" Louis cried out. "No need to give our baby brother bad ideas. He’s here for a wholesome field trip, isn’t that right Donny?”

Donny laughed, glancing out the window. They were pulling up the school's driveway now. He couldn't tell if he was still feeling nervous or was it now excitement? “Yeah, I don’t do any of that stuff.” He answered, wrinkling his nose.

“That’s right you don't." Louis agreed firmly. "Get high off life not drugs and alcohol, yada yada." The car slowed to a stop in one of the parking spaces by the buses and Donny got out of the car, dragging his luggage with him. "Have fun baby bro and if you decide to hook up with any guy or gal, remember to use protection.”

“Shut up.” Donny grumbled, slamming the door shut and cutting of the guffawing of his brothers. Suitcase in one hand and backpack slung over his shoulders, he made his way over to the chaperones who were all congregated in a half circle, looking bright eyed and bushy tailed as they took the attendance of the arriving students.

Donny got his attendance recorded, put his luggage away under the bus and hopped up the stairs to board it. His options for seating were plentiful as the bus was barely a quarter full at this time. He looked around and recognized Kai, an English classmate of his, who sat in the back. Their eyes met and Donny waved in return to Kai's nod of acknowledgement. Donny then took a seat two rows in front of him and began settling in.

“Ah! Awesome.” He spotted an outlet placed under the window and immediately plugged his phone in, wanting it to be fully charged for all the pictures he intended to take. In fact, he still needed to take his first one of the day. He opened up his favorite social media app and messed around until he captured a selfie that he liked enough to share.

Uma Darego

tumblr_ofiq10PTLF1refdzgo4_1280.jpg
Her morning had started out pretty decent before she reached the school. She was tired as hell but it wasn’t anything that she couldn’t handle. All of her bags had been packed the night before, so once she was ready her father dropped her off at the school. Uma wished that she could driven her vehicle but sadly the school wouldn’t allow it. When her things were put away Uma stood at the bus entrance waiting to be let in. She noticed that some of her classmates had arrived, everyone looked just as tired as herself. The young woman let out a yawn and wrapped her arms around herself. It was chilly outside, hopefully they’d let them on quickly.

Unfortunately Uma’s hope had lessened as minutes ticked by. She could feel annoyance setting in as she waited and waited. Were they trying to make them icicles before they even reached their destination? She didn’t understand why they couldn’t get onto the bus with the heat on blast. They could call roll from inside, she was sure of it. Uma sighed and shook her head. She tightened the silk headscarf on her head before shoving her hands into her pockets. Eventually the annoying voice of the principal could be heard. After a few words they were let of the bus. With a sigh of relief Uma quickly climbed inside. She sat in the very last seat of the bus. Uma pulled out her phone and earbuds. She placed the buds in her ear and turne on some smooth jazz, bobbing her head to the beat.

"Should I or should I not leave on campus?" Andres asked out loud as he was furiously combing through his hair. He woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning, leaving his hair in an afro-of-a-mess and not enough time to really do anything about it. It wasn't normal for the 18 year old to be so disorganized and unprepared, after all he practically raised his siblings himself, but he'd gotten home late from work that night, which meant staying up even later to finish packing. What did that mean? Well, he was more exhausted than a triathlon runner after a long day of racing.

"Leave it," came a voice from outside the bathroom. Andres instinctively jumped out of surprise and the person who'd frightened him laughed, knowing full well that the male hated jump scares. "It'll be grand theft auto if you don't. Well, you might be able to leave it. I don't know anyone who'd mess with a Corolla."

Andres rolled his eyes, a hint of a smile on his face as he pushed passed his kid sister. "Wow, don't hate on Frida, Carina. She's been through a lot already." Which was true. The Corolla was his mom's old car, the one she signed for after her first real pay check. It looked like it was in decent shape but throughout his licensed years, there were three occasions where it died on him. The first was on his first day to school during Junior year, the second was on his first date with his ex girlfriend, and the third was after he'd thought it would be cool to try and drift in a 10 year old car.

"What's Mamá doing?" He asked as they both shuffled into his and his little brother's room--Alan still noticeably asleep... on the beanie Andres decided he was going to wear. "Alan, get your butt up." Andres groaned as he slowly pushed his brother to the side, skillfully removing the beanie without waking his brother. Both he and Carina sighed in sync as they walked out. The world could've been ending and that boy would still be snoozing.

"She's finishing up the snacks she started last night for you and Cara." Carina finally answered as they entered the kitchen.

With a soft expression on his face, Andres approached his mother and hugged the small woman from behind. "Aye, Mamá," he began in Spanish, You didn't have to do this. Cara's probably bringing a lot of snacks already." A quiet chuckle left his lips at the thought. One of the things that attracted Andres to his best friend was their snacking habits. It was extremely unhealthy but they were still young, right?

"Oh, be quiet. I know you both could eat everything in less than an hour." Mariana joked as she stuff multiple ziplock bags filled with snacks into the male's backpack. She shoved his backpack into his hands and ushered them both out towards the car, where his suitcase was already waiting. "I already put your things in the trunk because I knew you'd probably wake up late."

"Aye. My heart." Andres sang, linking his arm with his mother and rested his head on her shoulder as they walked. "Mom, let's get married after I graduate, okay?"

The older woman cursed at him before shaking his arm and head off, both of them laughing in response. It was a continuous gag for Andres to ask his mom's hand in marriage ever since she divorced. Even though she acted annoyed by it, he knew it made her happy. What mother wouldn't love hearing how much her child cares for her?

Finally, the two were off towards the school and the giddiness from last night was sinking in once again. Andres was practically dancing in his seat once they pulled into the campus parking lot and he was out of the car before it even completely stopped. He didn't hear his mother yell at him for the recklessness, of course, even though he really shouldn't have done what he did. The doctor had told him that his ankle was healed but he still needed to be careful in case it magically broke again.

After saying telling his mother goodbye, the Colombian boy strolled towards the group of shivering seniors--shaking himself and blowing out a few puffs of mist in response. They appeared to have been huddling outside like a waddle of penguins for quite awhile, and he felt kind of bad for not sharing that pain. Instead of contemplating on why he should've been freezing to death with his classmates in the middle of winter, however, he gingerly went over to Principal Lee.

"Late again, I see," Principal Lee joked as he checked Andres' name off. "Alright, on you go!"

"A-aah, love ya, Mr. Lee!" Andy stuttered while his body still shook, throwing up two finger gun and pretending to shoot hearts at the shorter man. It wasn't long before he was climbing up the steps of the warm bus, humming "Sweater Weather" to himself as he walked down the aisles. He wanted an outer seat so he'd be able to share his snacks with Cara, and whomever else wanted food, in case they couldn't sit next to each other. The only one he spotted that wasn't all the way in the front, however, was next to a guy he didn't really know.

Oh, wellll. Andres thought nonchalantly as he took a seat. After adjusting his coat and jacket, he glanced to the side and realized he vaguely recognized the stranger. "Are you one of Cara's friends?"

Rika Huang

Location: School parking lot > Bus
Mood: Sleepy but excited.
1A175B19-1B7F-48FE-8288-ECB900BB3E4C.jpeg

Saying that Rika was cold was an understatement. The small 18 year old was stood in the middle of the drab parking lot shaking like a leaf as she buried her hands deep inside not her pockets hoping to give them some protection from the bitter cold.

The reason why Rika was in this state compared to everyone else is that her parents had made her walk to school this morning. They lived close enough and Rika wasn’t allowed to take her car and so her mother came up with the brilliant idea that it was for Rika to walk to school on this Arctic morning. Rika’s teeth chattered like something out of a cartoon as she jumped up and down on the spot for a bit hoping that it would improve the circulation to her finger tips which she couldn’t feel anymore.

“We’ve lost the attendance sheet” Their principal with the god awful toupee spoke as Rika groaned as she really was going to turn into an ice block at any moment. Rika just wanted to get onto the warm bus and fall asleep until they reach their budget senior trip destination. As soon as the principal said that they had found the attendance sheet it was like a stampeed had begun and Rika had taken on the role as Simba as she was rushed along with the crowds to her bus but she didn’t now mind as warmth was now ever closer. “Good Morning Miss Huang.” The principle said as Rika nodded and stepped into the bus. As the warm air hit her face it felt like the time she discovered that egg fried rice existed as she was at peace. The 18 year old jogged up the stairs as upstairs was always warmer.

She walked along the aisle looking for any signs of a heater when she found one at the back of the bus as she walked along the aisle pulling off her bag but as she was about to sit down she recognised the face that was in the seat next to her. It was Kai. The two have a class together this year and have the occasional conversation. “Hey.”Rika says her voice as quiet as a mouse. She then placed her backpack down and sat in the seat basking in the warm air that the heater was shooting out just above her head. Rika lifted her hands out of her pockets and lifted them up to have the heater thaw them out.

As Rika was warming up her phone rang and screen read ‘Baba’ in Chinese characthers as Rika picked up her phone answering her fathers call. It was a short call asking if she’d got their safely but Rika was speaking in Chinese so quietly as she didn’t want anyone to hear as it normally brought on a enslave of questions that Rika really didn’t know the answer too. “Okay, see you in a week.” Rika says in English before hanging up the phone and placing it in her pocket. She glanced Kai’s way for a second seeing if he had any strange look on his face as it was the normal reaction when people found out Rika spoke Chinese as she didn’t look Chinese.

I
— Harlan Iver —

Harlan set his brush down on the bathroom counter. Using his finger he parts his hair off to the side. He moves his head around to get a look at his hair.
"That looks fine."
He exits the bathroom and walks down the hall to his room. He takes a cursory glance around at the partial mess that's happening in his room as he walks in. He has his suitcase packed but still unzipped on the bed. His phone charger and headphones hanging out of the suitcase from where he half heavyhearted threw them in just so he wouldn't forget them. He sits down on his bed beside his luggage and folds his cords up and sets them neatly in the front zip up pocket. He lays the upper part of his body onto on his suitcase so he can close it. He sits back up with a huff. He's excited to go on this trip just not this early in the morning. He thought he procrastinated just enough to get all of his packing done, which he did... Probably, maybe, he doesn't actually know for sure but he's hoping.
"Harlan!" a female voice screams from the doorway. Harlan slowly sits up and is greeted by one of his sisters' irritated face. "What are you doing? You were supposed to meet me downstairs, like, ten minutes ago." she walks into the room and pulls his suitcase off the bed. "At the rate you're going you're gonna miss the bus and I told mom and dad you would be out of the house on time this morning."

"I can carry my suitcase" Harlan reaches for it but his sister pulls it away from him.

"I don't think so. I got you up early this morning and somehow you're still managing to press yourself on time. What were you doing? Bruno!" his sister called down the hall to their brother as she walks his luggage to the door, Harlan following behind her.

"I was packing." He cards a hand through his hair. "You just started packing this morning?" her voice raising a few octaves.

"No I started packing yesterday but I finished this morning."

Bruno meets them at Harlan's door "what's up?"

His sister just stares at his for a moment in disbelief before turning her attention to Bruno. "Can you take Harlan and his things to the car please? I still have to go and get my things packed because I have a class later this morning."

"You should have given yourself enough time to get it all packed." he threw at her with.

"I did but I didn't think you would take this long to get out of the house!"

"Well maybe you should have I always take a while to get out of the house."

"Well maybe you should-"

"You know what?" Bruno cuts in. "I can take him I don't have anything to do until later. You go get ready and I'll get this one out of the house.

She sighs in relief "thank you so much I love you." she gives Bruno a hug before pulling Harlan in for a tight hug. "I love you too." She gives his a quick kiss on the head. "and please please please, just for a little bit pretend you can be a responsible adult. And don't get lost!"

"I'll try my best." He gives her a huge smile

"Awww" his sister rubs her thumb across his cheek lovingly "I'm gonna see a missing persons report for you on the news later." Harlan hits her hand away and laughs "you won't shut up."

Bruno lifts Harlan's luggage down the stairs "come on Harlan or you're gonna be left behind"

Harlan goes down the stairs and is shuffled out the door and into the car by his brother.

They make it to the school at a somewhat decent time all thanks to Bruno's... driving habits. Harlan grabs his things from the trunk.

"Alright be safe and have fun" Bruno says

"Will do" Harlan gives his brother a hug. He steps onto the sidewalk and watches as his brother drives away. He takes a deep breath of the cold morning air and turns toward the crown of students. Nothing good ever comes from a bunch of teens on a school trip. I hope the staff know what they've gotten themselves into. he thought as he walks over to one of the buses. A teacher approaches him and starts directing him where to put his things and what bus he'll be on. As he was getting his luggage put away he could hear people shouting and screaming. At one point someone had even run into him. Yeah this was gonna be a fun trip. He smiled to himself.

RIVEST

HUNTER

THE OPENING
wearing: x minus the large chain combined with these shoes || mentions: Kai ( girl blue girl blue ), Rika ( wendy wendy ) & Uma ( erzulie erzulie ) || mood: stoked

"Come on, come on.." Hunter mumbled quietly to herself, trying to set up the last binding of her snowboard. Several curls of hair that slipped out of her bun, were dangling in front of the dark brown eyes. Every now and then they got blown into the air without it really being a solution. That she had to get out of bed before the sun had even risen wasn't irritating her. In fact, early mornings have never been a problem for Hunter. In her eyes there was nothing better than waking up around seven or eight to catch the first waves of the day or to see the city itself wake up while jogging through the streets. But this morning the 18-year old wasn't doing any athletic activity at all. Well, maybe it could go through as a light arm workout because she had been struggling already for half an hour. For some reason, the screwdriver she needed wasn't in its usual spot so she had to improvise with the other ones. "Thank god" Hunter said with an expression of relief as she heard the last click, meaning that the binding got into the right place. When she turned around she got unintentionally frightened by her father who just walked downstairs. "Jesus.." Hunter exhaled, followed by a laugh as she zipped up her snowboard in the associated bag and set it down by the rest of her luggage. "Seriously? I know i'm getting old, but i didn't realise i looked that bad already" was the response of her father. "I'm sorry dad" she started, raising both of her shoulders lightly as she faked a compassionate expression. But that expression got replaced for a grin quite fast as she continued her sentence "sometimes it's better to lie instead than to hurt someone's feelings". Hunter liked joking around with her father, it was always on the border of being mean but they both knew it wasn't serious. With her mother, she could just laugh for hours about absolutely nothing. "Kidding" Hunter said before she kissed her father on his cheek and sprinted upstairs to get ready.

It didn't take long before Hunter was all set and ready to go. The outfit she wore was quite simple, black skinny jeans, a black turtleneck, a pair of small hoop earrings and her bright red revenge sneakers. Makeup wasn't something she wore often simply because she didn't feel the need to. Special occasions were an exception though, oh and she liked to wear mascara most of the days. Hunter grabbed the charger and her phone off the nightstand and rushed back downstairs. The excitement was running through her veins, growing more and more as the time passed. "Ready?" her dad asked, raising one of his eyebrows as his eyes followed his daughter's movements. "Al....most" Hunter said as she quickly scribbled a short note on a piece of paper. The rest of the family was still asleep and the main purpose of the note was to make sure her youngest brother didn't touch her stuff. Most of the time when he "borrowed" something of her she'd never see it back, or it was back in place but broken. In the meantime, her father already had grabbed a suitcase and loaded it in the trunk. She grabbed the last backpack as soon as she finished the note and closed the door behind her.

The car ride contained a lot of rapping along, dancing as much as possible with a seatbelt on and laughter. Hunter noticed that they pulled up on the driveway of the school, which meant that it was time to get on that bus for a long 5 hours drive. She liked car rides, but during the night and not during the day. Her father pulled into one of the campus parking spots and grabbed Hunter's arm before she was able to jump out of the car. "Promise me one thing, come back for once without breaking any bones will you?" he said with a grin as he reached over to hug her. "Alright alright, i'll try but i can't promise anything" Hunter replied, rolling her eyes. It's not like she broke that many bones, it's just that risky sports bring risky injuries. But she knew he only meant it good. Realising she was on the late side she quickly got her stuff out of the trunk and yelled a "see ya dad, stay safe".

Since Hunter only heard half of the things their principal, Mr. Lee, had said, was another reason to socialize with some of the other classmates she didn't know yet. Most of them seemed to be shaking and blowing out puffs because of the freezing circumstances. The girl on her right seemed to be kind so Hunter asked a quick summary of the things Mr. Lee had said. After that she got her attendance checked and the endless looking legs jogged upstairs. Hunter's cheekbones and nose were covered by a light shade of red, caused by the immediate temperature difference. Once again she moved a curl of hair behind her ear and walked along the aisle. In the back she noticed Kai, not with the happiest expression on his face. Probably irritated by the cold, she thought to herself. The seat next to him was sadly taken already, Rika was the name of the girl that sat next to him if she remembered it right. Hunter shove her hands in the pockets of her jacket and let her eyes gaze through the bus. She let her gaze hang as she spotted Uma, bobbing along the tunes of the music that came out of her earbuds, in the very last seat of the bus with an empty seat next to her. Hunter walked past the aisles to the end of the bus, and couldn't help to mess up Kai's hair a bit as she walked past his seat. "Come on grumpy, this is going to be fun" she said with a grin and a quick smile to Rika before she dropped herself in the seat next to Uma. "Hey there!" Hunter softly said with a small smile on her face, pulling one of Uma's earbuds out of her ear so she wouldn't scare her too much.

Brea Faye
"Where is my shoe?" Brea lifted up a couch cushion, searching for her black flat. She just knew that one of the twins had something to do with it, and if that were the case, she'd never find it. "Mom!" Brea glanced at her cell phone, noting the time, realizing they should have left about twenty minutes ago. The buses were going to leave soon, and she didn't doubt that they would leave her behind. "Mom!" She shrieked again, shoving her phone back into her pocket and turning to her bag on the couch.

She zipped up the last section, giving up on finding the shoe. She leaned over and snatched her boots up off the floor, turning to plop on the couch and pull them on. Just as she finished with the second one, her mom rounded the corner, one twin in each arm. "Can you help me find their shoes?" The woman asked, the exasperation in her eyes evident. It caused Brea to smirk slightly, and she shook her head, but pushed herself off the couch and spent another ten minutes hunting down the twins' shoes. Once they were dressed and ready, her mom yelled upstairs at Maria to come down. Despite the fact that Brea's younger sister had known she had to be ready, it was another few minutes before the girl made her appearance.

"Come on, we have to go!" Brea exclaimed, zipping her jacket up and grabbing her large duffel bag. She had another bag with some other things in it that she grabbed as well, and then sped out of the house. Eventually, everyone was settled into the car, and they were off. Brea was really expecting the buses to be gone by the time they reached the school, but surprisingly, they were still there. "Okay, love you guys, see you soon!" Brea turned to her mom and hugged her, then exited the car and kissed the twins bye before grabbing her bags and waving to Maria. She turned and hurried towards the buses, being one of the last ones to put her bag underneath the bus and board.

Once she stepped foot on the bus, reality slapped Brea in the face. She was excited for the trip, sure, but at the same time-- she was still sort of considered the new girl. She didn't have many friends; most people just ignored her. Biting her lip and glancing down, she made her way down the aisle towards the back, finding an empty seat and sliding into it.

REWIND
A whine dances from her lips, feet tapping the ground with a ‘thump’ as a pout paints itself upon pink laced lips; a child within the body of an eighteen year old, Mariella impatiently stands by the door.

Currently, her brothers rushed around the Castillo residence due to both of them waking up late to send Mariella off to the senior’s trip that she begged to attend, craving for the sweet taste of freedom, to touch upon her senses just this once — but, her freedom was off to a late start and was to be halted until further notice. Amidst their rushing, Mariella’s phone let out a sharp ‘ding’ indicating she received a notification, it most commonly being from the many apps she downloaded to occupy herself, but perhaps if she was lucky it came from a text message, and for once luck seemed to be on her side.

( mamá → ) me & your father hope you have fun on your trip sweets! stay safe xx

Her expression visibly softens, a look of fondness overtaking the irritation that was once deeply rooted on her visage after reading the message, before quickly typing back a response.

( → mamá ) thank you, but don’t have too much fun without me!!

Placing her phone in her pocket, hues of brown are met with another pair of eyes that resemble Mateo’s causing her lips to form into a round circle, a gasp emitting from them before they’re quick to mask her surprise.“What took you so long? I feel like I’ve been standing here for 5 hours.” She’s huffing, chest slightly puffed out in annoyance as she looks around for the oldest of the two, Noel, a master of the term ‘fashionably late’, if you counted looking like he rolled out the bed 5 minutes ago fashionable.. He’s the designated driver after he and Mateo battled out an intense game of Rock Paper Scissors that decided on the driver, with Mariella being shotgun naturally; being the youngest and only girl had it’s small benefits.

Ignoring the excuse breathed out from Mateo, the jingling of keys caught her attention almost immediately, eyes darting to find where the sweet melody came from and finding themselves landing on Noel’s hand that held the keys within the confines of his fingers and though he too says something, Mariella can’t hear it over the sound of freedom — she’s the first one out the door, each step she took, she took bouncing, the radiant aura she emitted surely seeming brighter than the brightest star in the sky, because in this moment she was the brightest star.

Finally settling into the car, mutters of displeasure were heard from the side of Mariella where Noel sat in the driver’s seat, much to Mateo’s pleasure who seemed to enjoy seeing his older brother suffering.

“Huh? What was that? I can’t hear you over the sound of me getting sleep.” As if to accentuate his comment, Mateo lets out a string of snores yet Noel does nothing but sigh in defeat; the whole ordeal causing Mariella to giggle as her hand rests on Noel’s shoulder, squeezing it slightly in a comforting way.

“There’s always when I get back. Besides maybe I can let you on to some Rock Paper Scissors tricks.” Winking, her hand fell from his shoulder and went to intertwine itself with her other hand. Behind them, an annoyed Mateo whined a slew of comments, claiming the tricks she mentioned were sacred and only to be used by him and Mariella, but that did little to change her mind. Ignoring him, Mariella’s eyes averted to the world laid outside her window, a world that laid just upon her fingertips, a world that was always taken from her, but would soon be open for her taken, at that thought giddiness overcame her senses while she sat in the car, the low hum of music filling the silence as she sat there almost unable to contain her excitement.

——

The usual dread she felt at seeing the school was no longer there, eyes now lit up as joy danced within her irises, the touch of a smile gracing her lips with every move the car made towards the school before it came to a halt, announcing the end of the trip and starting Mariella’s journey all at once. She wanted nothing more than to throw open the door to the car, quickly grab her things and happily run into the loving arms of the bus that’d be heading to her destination, but she faltered for a second, instead opting to sit still and patiently wait; though it wouldn’t be long before she’d be bustling out the car with energy..

And with a sigh, Mariella could see Noel turn towards her, voice tinged with worry and eyes mirroring a puppy — she’d been dreading this moment where he tells her to be safe, and though Mariella appreciates it, all she can offer is a small smile paired with a ‘trust me’ before she’s out the door and on her feet.

Suitcase rolls behind her while a smaller bag is slung across her body filled with smaller necessities that were deemed too important. Upon arriving to the scene, Mariella is pleasantly surprised that the buses haven’t took off by now, convinced that she would’ve been too late due to her brothers delaying their initial arrival time. Standing behind a few others who put their things under the bus, the weather was rather chilling and the warmth that lingered within her body from being in the car moments ago was starting to disperse the longer she stood outside, but she didn’t rush those in front of her and stayed put until it was her turn.

Clasping her hands together, Mariella was quick to check in with the principal finding his antics to be ‘cool’ quite endearing rather than embarrassing like others. After hopping onto the bus, Mariella takes the time to greet the familiar faces she spots sitting along the seats, and walks farther towards the back, but not the very back before plopping down and sliding near the window. As she settled in her seat, Mariella reached for her phone and pulled it out to find little to no notifications, more importantly none from Jacob. Looking up from where she sat to see if he magically appeared, she was met with more faces that didn’t resemble her best friend causing her to pout. Though tempted to send him a text message, she decided to wait a bit in hopes of him arriving soon.

DONNOVAN
MAILE

Donny was chilling in his seat, head lazily resting on the chilled window of the bus as his thumbs tapped rapidly on his phone. No longer interested in looking at the pictures from others on snapchat, he now found himself consumed in playing one of those piano music games to kill time. With earbuds in his ear, a thousand miles played as he hit the notes with accuracy. He couldn’t help but sing along quietly under his breath. “Cause you know I’d walk a th-” He snapped his mouth shut, distracted by someone taking the empty seat beside him which caused him to falter on multiple notes.

GAME OVER flashed across the screen as he side-eyed whoever it was that decided to sit next to him without asking first. He hoped it wasn’t someone weird, but that worry was soothed with a quickness as he got an eye full of the cutie beside him. Hm. He looked familiar, the longer he stared at him. Donny pulled his headphones from his ears in time to hear himself being questioned if he was Cara's friend.

He lit up with interest. “I am!” He smiled, a crater forming in his left cheek as he turned in his seat to fully regard the boy who decided to sit next to him. He assumed that he must be a friend of Cara’s as well and any friend of Cara could probably become his friend as well. “I’m Donnovan. Most people call me Don or Donny, but you can call me whenever.” He covered his mouth as he laughed at his little corny joke, hoping it'd be appreciated. "But seriously, call me whatever." He waved his hand, not picky with how people addressed him.

“So, um,” He tilted his head, a thoughtful looking overcoming his face. “I’m pretty sure I’ve seen you around before. Probably with Cara right? I’ve never caught your name though.”

KAI
HENEGHAN

location: on the bus ; mood: sleepy

As the departure time grew closer, Kai watched, bored as more and more students he didn’t know began boarding the bus. With them they brought typical teenage chaos. Soon, the quiet atmosphere on the bus shifted into a cacophony of laughter, excited chatter and music from people who didn’t understand the concept of headphones. I’m starting to sound like an old man, Kai swore he wasn’t usually this... bitter. He was just tired, and hungry, because he’d just realized moments ago that he’d tragically forgotten to bring his snacks. He knew exactly where the bag was too. All the way at home, on his kitchen table, looking as stupid as he felt for leaving them. He sighed.

He watched as Andy walked down the aisle, choosing to sit a few seats before him. Kai thought about getting up and saying something to him but it was a far walk, at least to him, and he was too comfortable at the moment to get up. He'd talk to that fool later. As he peered over the seats to see who else had arrived, Rika, a classmate of his, soon appeared down the aisle and sat in the seat beside him. He shot her a small, sleepy smile. “Hey.” He said.

Being so close Kai couldn’t help but overhear the quiet Chinese spoken from her lips. When she finished her phone call and glanced over at him, he was already gazing at her with a curious look. “Parents?” He questioned, assuming so from Rika’s shy demeanor. Then again, she always seemed so shy. At least in all of their interactions so far. His stomach growled, cutting his thoughts off. He felt like a freeloader, but Rika looked like a nice girl so he risked the chance to ask. “Hey, do you have any snacks? I forgot to bring some and I haven’t eaten-.”

His words were interrupted as he was taken by surprise from Hunter messing up his hair. His hands flew up to fix the flyaways after a quick, fond roll of his eyes. "You know that's just how my face looks. Anyways yeah sure it'll be fun after I get food and some sleep." He told her.

Andres' eyes flickered towards the left side of Donnovan's face as it was confirmed that Cara was a mutual friend. The corners of his lips curled into a crooked smile as he noticed the dimple, a look of amusement growing with each passing second. "Donnovan. Don. Donny." He repeated, leaning back in his seat as a quiet laugh escaped his lips. The comment was cute, Andres had to give the guy that much, but Donnovan probably just set himself up for something that was going to be difficult to escape. "You're probably going regret saying that in the future. Nicknaming and petnaming are kind of my thing."

With a chuckle, the boy began digging into the gray backpack he'd placed on the bus floor. It completely slipped his mind that he never introduced himself, making him apologize in a rather abrupt manner. "Oh, sh**." Andres let out an airy laugh. "Agh, sorry. I have a sailor mouth. Cara gets onto me for that. But yeah, I'm usually hanging around her or Kai--when he's not being moody. Andres Silvera is the name." He unconsciously said his name with an accent, offering a hand for a quick shake. "A lot of people call me Andy for short." After shaking Donovan's hand, he immediately went to pull off his beanie and ruffled the ball of fluff on his head. "Or Simba for obvious reasons."

A snicker came from a few seats back which made Andres turn around and say something. "Aye, don't be jealous Uriel. At least I have a full head of hair." His words were snarky but his actions were entirely friendly. The beanie was soon back in place and he was already passing out his mom's homemade snacks to some of his closer companions. It was evident that most of it was for him and Cara since all their favorites were there and that made him laugh out loud. "Kai," Andres called as he sat with his knees on the seat, "why weren't you born a pretty girl? My mom would've at least thought to make you some decent snacks."

He shook his head as he sat back down and pulled out one of the individually wrapped bunuelos. It was the Colombian version of the snack, making it spherical with a generous coat of cinnamon sugar. The sweet, warm aroma filled his nostrils as he said something praisworthy in Spanish. "Oh my.. I might actually cry." Andres whispered dramatically as he simply inhaled the scent. However, a thought crossed his mind and he quickly turned Donnovan, his eyebrow rising inquisitively. "Donny." He said with as much of a serious expression as he could manage. "Donny." He repeated, his lips twitching as he tried not to laugh or smile. "I'm about to ask you a question that will become the foundation and holy grail for a possibly amazing and everlasting friendship. Do you want some?"

His composure finally cracked and that crooked grin of his returned. "If you don't, that's fine. I just wanted to know if you liked sweets."

Uma Darego

Uma had been mentally jamming to her music when she suddenly felt one of the buds being pulled out of her ear. She turned her attention to the culprit and smiled when she saw who it was. “Sup.” She greeted. Uma looked around the bus, it was a lot more fuller from when she had first got on. Uma turned off her music and took out her other earbud. “So are you excited?” She turned back to Hunter. Uma took a moment to stretch, she let out a pleased groan when some bones popped. If this was how she would get after a few minutes she knew that it would be hell for a few hours.
