You should read other RPs and see how it's done!
Just take a look around at the RPs in your areas of interest, lurk on the RPs for a while, and when you get a general feel for how to do it, go for it!
Start with "simple", work your way up to "casual", and if you want to go any further than that, THEN DO IT!
