Alex adjusted her glasses, fixating her eyes on the captivating words of "Out of Orange" by Cleary Wolters. Never had she ever related to such a story like Cleary's but it was as if she was reading a playback of her life. "Alex!" someone yelled, forcing her eyes to shoot up. She smiled at the blonde-haired, blue-eyed love of her life. "Piper," she raised her left eyebrow, wondering what she wanted. "What're you doing, Alex?" she asked, as she sat down on Alex's uncomfortable mattress. "Reading," she replied, folding the edge of the paper to mark where she left off then putting it down on the small table beside her "bed", "What is it, Pipes?" Alex knew Piper wanted something. "We can go in the church," Piper winked, moving closer to Alex. Alex smirked, knowing where she was getting at. "Lunch!" a guard yelled, notifying them that it was time to go into the cafeteria. "I guess we'll have to take a rain check," Alex winked, as they both got off of the mattress and walked out. "Nicky, coming to lunch?" Alex said, as she leaned over the wall that separates two bunks from the other two, talking to the dirty blonde. "Coming, Vause," Nicky replied. Alex nodded, as she made her way to the cafeteria.
Alex walked towards the lunch line, standing behind Taystee and Poussey. "That's some real Harry Potter shit!" Taystee screamed, smiling and laughing with Poussey as they high fived one another. Alex smiled at their conversation. She wasn't that close to either of them, but she still found them extremely funny. When the line finally moved up, Alex grabbed the tray of food, not really looking at the Spanish girls who ran the kitchen. She turned around, in search of the girls she usually sat with. She walked over to where Big Boo, Yoga Jones, Piper and Morello were sitting. "Hey, look. It's Vause, Piper's lover." Big Boo said, laughing, as she sat down. "Fuck you, Boo." Alex smirked, "Hey," she said to everyone else. Piper looked at Alex and Alex looked back, then winked. "So you guys hear we're getting a new inmate?" Morello asked. Alex looked at Morello, wondering how she knew that information. "Oh really? She gay?" Big Boo asked. "Who knows? I just hope she likes make up," she replied. "Of course you do," Big Boo laughed. Alex looked down at the tray of prison food, and sighed as she ate it. She missed the taste of expensive food she used to eat when she was out. Even the taste of McDonalds would satisfy her. Better than this shit, she thought to herself. "15 minutes left, ladies! Eat up!" O'neill, a stout guard, yelled.
A rough, southern-style voice shouted from around the corner, demanding Brynn to make her way to lunch. The short blonde crossed her arms over the ugly orange uniform she had been forced into moments ago, and huffed. With a pivot, Brynn Rhodes was face-to-face with an angry man who had a serious case of Hitler 'stache. The girl smiled, looking down at the name printed on the guard's powder-blue shirt. "Officer Mendez, I'm afraid I forgot the way to the cafeteria. Would you mind escorting me?" Brynn whispered in the most saccharine way that she could manage. All she recieved back was a snarl.
"Rhodes, I am an officer, not an usher. It's this way."
With a shove, Officer Mendez had left Brynn in the corridor with no sense of where she was headed.

Rhodes: "I've always liked fire. And I've always hated boys. Once one collided with me, I used another to solve it. Makes sense?"
Vale: "Miss Rhodes, you're not answering our question. Tell us what sparked your fire, no pun intended."
Rhodes: "You want to know the truth? I'll give you the truth. I'm lesbian. Queer. 100% on the gay train. Girls are rad. Boys are bad. Feminazi. I'm sure you've all heard th-"
Vale: "Rhodes, cut the crap. Tell us about the crime."
Rhodes: "I was getting there, Jesus. A boy made fun of my sexuality. I hate being in the closet. H-a-t-e it. More than I hate men, and, yes, I do hate men quite a lot. No offense to both of you lovely gentlemen."
Patterson: "We get it. The crime, Rhodes. The part where everything goes kablooey."
Rhodes: "Jesus, you boys sure are antsy today. Alright. So, this guy is all homophobic, and that ain't cool with me. So I ask him if he has a problem with it. And he goes all 'Why yes, I do.' Things get rough, and then, he whips out his big boy guns and calls me, and I quote, a 'useless, trashy lesbian.' Wow. I get pissed. Super pissed. So I go over to his house that night, get my good friend 'gasolina', dribble drabble a few drops here and there.. and pull out Mr. Match. Throw it, run, and pray to God nobody saw me. I ain't sorry. That homophobic shit is disgusting. Go ahead. Convict me. That's arson for ya."
Patterson: "There are other charges against you, Miss Rhodes. Arson is 2 years maximum, but you got more on your plate."
Rhodes: "Oh, golly me. Let's hear it."
Rhodes: "Oh, you mean the Extortion and Attempt. Aha, let's do this thing. Okay, so, somebody saw me throwing that little flame stick, and they know me on a personal level, 'mmkay? And later, they confronted me about it. And I'm all over here, like, no way Jose. But then they convince me. So I get mad. Really mad. I tell 'em, 'If you tell anybody, the feds, the police, anybody, you're going to get a lot more than a petty fire.' A few days later, cops are on my doorstep, and I play all shy eyes. But later, I go over to their house, and I'm about to do some scary shit. But before I can, the coppers are right behind me, I'm in handcuffs, and now I'm here.. Ain't this all in my case file?"
Patterson: "It is. We just needed it in recording for the conviction."

The smell of food was Brynn's guide towards the lunchroom.
After wobbling through the halls like a half-stoned, half-drunk teenager, the woman found herself at the entrance. What followed made Brynn wish she hadn't found the cafeteria. Tens, if not hundreds, of pairs of eyes were trained on her like a gluttonous kid were to stare at a cake. Some eyes whispered 'new meat', some eyes whispered 'bitch', and some eyes.. one in particular, were definitely whispering 'crazy'.
"I've found myself a new Dandelion!"
Brynn gasped a little as a voice cut through the heavy silence, taking a few steps back. Her confidence faded as a woman rushed up to her, practically gushing with excitement. She was even more uneasy as her hand was taken by the lady, and downright disgusted as she kissed it. "Um, excuse me.." Brynn exclaimed, drawing back her hand from the stranger. "Oh, Dandelion, I'm sorry. Let me introduce myself. My name, is," Brynn cut her off, crossing her arms over her chest. "Okay, listen, I may like girls, but I don't like them this quickly. Please, just, no." She gave a smirk towards the woman, whose smile hadn't faded one bit, and glided further into the cafeteria.
"My old Dandelion said that. I won't let you slip away like she did!"
"All I'm saying is that if you like vagina, then you sh-" Alex was cut mid-sentence, as the cafeteria got extremely quiet. Everyone turned around to see the cause of the sudden silence. "Oh, she's hooooot," Big Boo commented, eyeing the girl. Alex watched as Suzanne a.k.a "Crazy Eyes" approached the girl. She couldn't help but to smirk at the girl's reaction. She's got balls, Alex thought to herself. A few seconds later, everything went back to normal and the cafeteria erupted in noise. "Looks like your type of girl, Vause," Big Boo smiled, "Chapman, you've got yourself some competition." Alex couldn't help but watch the new girl. Boo had a point, she was hot. "Yeah, right. I will cut her," Piper joked. Alex looked over at Piper and give her one of those "sure you will" looks. "Hellooooo, ladies," a familiar voice said. Alex looked up to see Nicky. She sat beside Morello, who slightly blushed. Alex wondered if she and Nicky were still hooking up in the church. "Hey, Nichols," Yoga Jones replied. Big Boo just nodded her head before asking, "Nichols, you seen that new girl?" Nicky licked her lips, "Of course, she's my new target." Morello rolled her eyes. Maybe they are, Alex thought, assuming her own previous thought. "Hey, Soso," Alex said, acknowledging the dark haired girl who sat down beside Boo. The girl simply nodded in return, slightly nervous. You'd think she'd be used to this place by now, Alex thought to herself.
Suddenly, Alex felt something move up against her leg. She looked across from her, at Piper, and raised her eyebrow. Piper continued to eat her food, smiling. Alex tried to discreetly look under the table, but failed. "What the hell are you two over there doing? Playing footsies?" Big Boo asked, causing Piper to move her leg back. "I'd love to watch," Nicky laughed. Morello scoffed, got up and dumped her tray before leaving out of the cafeteria. "What the hell is her problem?" Nicky asked, confused. Big Boo laughed, before shaking her head. Nicky looked over at Alex, but Alex only shrugged her shoulders in response. Alex looked around, partially wondering where the new girl had went. Nicky followed Alex's eyes and yelled, "Hey, new girl! Come sit with us." Big Boo smiled and then said, "Yeah, we're pretty nice people."
Dandelion? Where the fuck was she getting that from?, Brynn thought to herself, stopping about halfway from the front of the cafeteria. The girl looked down at her shoes, gray and itchy, with a sigh. Only an hour into her official prison life, and she already had a crazy stalker. Brynn couldn't bear to remember the last time somebody had clung onto her like "Crazy Eyes" did to her, as she heard other inmates address the woman. She scooped her tumbling blonde hair behind her ears, bringing wide eyes back up to the crowd of inmates remorsefully. For a few seconds, she held eye contact with a woman, whose eyes seemed to be latched upon her behind thick black frames and winged eyeliner. Brynn gave a little smirk, before the world went crazy again.
"Dandelion! Sit with me!"
Crazy Eyes had leaped up from her spot, and was now tugging at Brynn's arm ferociously in that direction. The shorter girl gasped aloud this time, and felt the cafeteria go silent once more. "N-no.." She whispered, flashing a glare at the guards in the cafeteria who paid no attention to this ordeal. Brynn ripped her arm away from Crazy Eyes' grasp, and proceeded to back away a few feet. "Listen. To. Me. I don't know what you're getting at with this Dandelion shit, but if you ever touch me again-.." Brynn was cut off by a harsh glare from Officer Mendez, who was observing the entire event from the cafeteria window. The blonde cast a nasty look towards Crazy Eyes, whose infatuated gaze hadn't faltered, and continued to walk forward. The chatter in the cafeteria resumed, and Brynn swore she heard the phrase "New Girl" in every conversation she passed.
One stood out in particular, when an invitation was shouted from the opposite side of the cafeteria.
Her appetite gone, Brynn rushed past her new stalker's table and towards the small cluster of women. She smiled briefly, sitting in an empty seat next to the woman she had seen before and a polite-looking blonde. Brynn rested her elbows on the table, exhaling, before noticing that all gazes were fixed on her, once more.
"I'm Brynn. Brynn Rhodes. And let me just say, thank you for saving my ass."
Alex eyes were fixated on the girl's hair. One thing she loved more than anything were blondes. "Ah, no problem, Rhodes," Nicky was the first to speak up. "So are you into girls?" Big Boo asked. Alex laughed. "Please excuse these two. They think every girl that comes in here is a lesbian or can be converted," she said, "Hi, Brynn. I'm Alex, she's Piper, that asshole over there is Nicky, that's Big Boo" she pointed at the three girls as she announced their names, "Oh, and that's Yoga Jones," she pointed at the blonde haired more mature woman. "Nice to meet your acquaintance," Yoga Jones said, waving. "Just so you know, Piper's fuckin' Alex and Nicky's with Morello. Yoga Jones isn't into girls even though everyone thinks she is," Big Boo said, "And well, I'm single. So you can just come over here with Mama Boo and let me take good care of you." Alex looked over at Big Boo and said, "Jesus, she just got here. Let her at least get settled first." Alex then looked back at Brynn. "Ignore her, she's only kidding." Big Boo scoffed before singing, "No, I'm noooootttttt." She looked over at Brynn and winked. "Hey, I called fuckin' dibs," Nicky said, as if Brynn was a piece of food.
"Ladies! Wrap it up! Time to go!" Pornstache yelled, as he walked into the cafeteria. Alex sighed then got up, with Piper following closely behind. "So, about that rain check," she hinted. Alex looked at her and winked. "Meet me in there in a few minutes, Pipes," she replied. "I'll be waiting for you," Piper whispered into Alex's ear. "HEY! TOO CLOSE, INMATES!" Pornstache yelled, slightly excited to see the two girls that close. Piper moved away from Alex, both of her hands held high. "We aren't doing anything," Piper said. Alex rolled her eyes at Pornstache and then bit her lip as she watched Piper walk away. "Vause," Pornstache yelled, snapping Alex back to reality and yelling for no reason considering he was right beside her, "The new girl is in your dorm. I don't feel like showing her around. So you do it. Got it?" He got closer to her, making her uncomfortable. She nodded her head. "Good! Newbie!" he yelled out to the new girl.
"Are you kidding? Girls are.." Brynn smiled, relaxing her posture a little bit with a deep exhale. "..girls are amazing. Breathtaking, really. Amazing. Dazzling. I could go on. So, to answer your question, I dig girls." The blonde smirked, looking down momentarily as she could feel the hint of pink on her cheeks rising. "Nicky. Alex. Piper. Big Boo, and Yoga Jones. I'm assuming Morello is.. the lipstick one who just stormed outta here like it was a race..? I don't know, just a guess." Brynn smiled at each of them, holding her gaze with Alex and Piper for a bit longer. "Y'all can call me Blaze. Or Brynn. Whatever rolls off the tongue. Just none of that Newbie shit. I've gotten enough of that already," Brynn cast a glare to the side at Crazy Eyes, who was making gestures wildly at her from across the lunchroom. She shook her head, smiling at Big Boo. "Thanks for the invitation, sweetie, but I'd rather keep the lesbian activity down for a bit. Considering the way Mendez looked at me earlier, I'd rather not become a late-night porno for him." She nodded.
Within a few minutes of awkward introductions and conversations, lunch came to a closing.
When her new title was called by Officer Mendez, Brynn snapped out of her trance at the table and stood up, walking slowly towards Alex and the officer. She smiled weakly towards the black-haired beauty and grimaced slightly as she felt his breath on her neck, as if he were waiting for something to happen. "Pleasure to meet you once more, Officer Mendez." She gave a little wink to him, before turning to Alex.
"So, we're roomies now, huh? I'm hoping you won't be bothered by the fact that I practically spend all night reading, even if it's in the dark." She gave a little laugh, before cautionarily glancing towards Crazy Eyes, who was exiting at this moment. She stepped aside to make room, accidentally bumping into her new roommate.
Alex looked at Brynn and smiled. "Watch yourself, Rhodes," she said, jokingly, "Follow me, or else." She then remembered that she had to meet Piper in the church. Fuck, she thought. She decided that she couldn't take long or else Piper would think she stood her up and they'd be arguing. One thing Alex didn't like about her relationship with Piper was that they always argued and then a few days later, they would be having make up sex in the library. It was slightly confusing to Alex. There was absolutely no doubt in her mind whether or not she loved Piper but a part of her was growing tired of the break ups and make ups. Alex never had anything consistent in her life and she was beginning to think that her relationship with Piper was #1 of that list of inconsistency. Totally wrapped in her thoughts, Alex sighed. She shook her head, bringing herself back down to Earth. "Now, this prison is probably not like one you're used to. That is, if you'd ever been to prison," she said, hoping Brynn would tell her why she was in Litchfield in the first place.
Alex briefly analyzed Brynn. She doesn't really look like the type to murder you in your sleep, Alex thought. She then looked at Brynn again. Or maybe she is. Alex laughed at herself. "You don't have to tell me," she said, as she walked down the hall, "Now, there are girls you should probably stay away from and not fuck with because although you probably think you're hot shit, which you kind of are," she let those last words slip out of her mouth, "there are other girls here who can kill you with their pinky fingers. Be careful who you trust, too. Girls will turn their backs on you within seconds and not shed a tear when you're laying on the hard, cold floor." She smiled at the girl, "Welcome to Litchfield, gorgeous."
"Sorry, Alex, I was making way for my," Brynn lowered her voice, in case any passerbys were feeling snoopy, "lover," The blonde giggled at the thought, following her roommate out into the vinegar-scented corridor. Brynn took a moment to actually realize where she was. She had committed a felony. She would be spending the next few years of her life in these odorful halls. The blonde shivered at the thought . Doing calculations, Brynn figured, "I'm going to be thirty-one when I get out of here." She spoke with such ease, it was almost like she was talking to her friends at a coffeehouse on First and Congress Avenue. Oh, how she would kill for another drop of coffee. Her eyes swiveled from the peeling paint on the wall to meet Alex's, taking in the full view of her roommate. She was, in her own terms, physically flawless. Brynn held the gaze for a bit longer, before confessing up to the beautiful girl.
"Arson, attempt, and extortion. I burnt a homophobic guy's house down, threatened the witnesses, and wanted to live out my promises once the cops were on my back. I would do it all again in a second. He deserved it, no doubt."
Walking swiftly down the hall with Alex, Brynn felt the glares of several inmates on the back of her neck. Trying her best to shake it off, she smiled at her roommate once more.
"I'm assuming most people here aren't as friendly as you. I'm liking the vibes from your pack, though. Got a pretty bunch of girls with ya, that's for sure. But some people.. Just downright.. Crazy."
Brynn shivered from the last few words, Crazy Eyes' infatuated gaze haunting her thoughts. She shivered once more in her orange jumpsuit.
Four years in prison sure were going to change her.
Alex looked over at the girl and said, "Wow. Yeah, he definitely deserved that shit. It's 2015, people need to get over their homophobic fears. Like, I'm not trying to convert your fucking daughter, for fuck's sake! I'm just trying to be able to have the same rights as you. Anyways, yeah. My girls are pretty harmless. Well, until you fuck them over," she said, with a smirk, "don't ever fuck them over, Rhodes." Alex continued to walk down the hall, stopping in front of the room that had her and the other girls' bunks. "Listen, before we go in there, I want you to know one thing, alright? Never, and I mean never, leave valuable things just laying around. People will snoop through your shit and they will steal it if they like it," Alex said, frankly, "Also, there are girls who will try to make a punk out of you. I've seen you with Crazy Eyes so you probably don't need me to explain to you how to stick up for yourself." With that, she walked inside of the room.
Alex smiled at the red, spiky haired woman and said, "Hey, Red." The woman simply smiled back at Alex before greeting her, "Vause." Alex walked over to the cubix where she and Brynn would be sleeping. "Your bed is over there," she pointed to the empty side of the room with a bed and a night stand in front of it, "That side of the room is completely yours. I only have one rule in here. That is to make sure that you keep your side clean. I don't have OCD or anything, but I hate seeing messes. That's the only thing I ask of you." Alex sat down on her mattress and looked over at Brynn. "Your stay here can either go by fast or really slow. It's your choice."
"So, I'm assuming that's her name. Crazy Eyes? Does she do that to every chick that comes in here? Because, damn, I mean.. I'm flattered, but.. I'd rather have a hot girl finishing me off like Sunday dinner than a lunatic kissing my hand and calling me," Brynn took a second to laugh, covering her mouth with her hand as her hair bounced with ever giggle. "Dandelion? What kind of name is that?" Brynn smiled for the first time that day, bright and wide. She always told me that my smile would be the last thing she'd let go of, she thought to herself, and suddenly Brynn Rhodes wasn't that smiley any more.
Entering the dormitory rooms was like going into a zoo with no crackers to feed the animals.
This is almost like Scared Straight on Netflix, Brynn commented, as some girls hurled nasty names in her direction. They all rose from their beds, or rather bunks, and stood at the edge of their cubes as if they were waiting for a parade. The blonde girl thanked the Lord that her cubicle was near, or else she would lash out sometime soon.
"You're not going to get any messes from me, Alex. The only trouble I think I'm going to get into is with that Mendez with a mustache. Does he treat his girls like that all the time?"
Brynn smirked, plopping down on her hard mattress. This was definitely going to take some adjusting to get through. Her cousin warned her before coming to Litchfield about prison life. "The guards are vicious. The girls are even more lethal. Ally yourself with the right people, Blaze, and you'll be out of there in a snap," she had said to her, reflecting on her own ten years behind bars. The girl faintly smiled at the thought of her nickname.
Maybe, with the right people, the adjustment wouldn't be too hard.
"Yeah, she tends to come off extremely strong but in her defense, she's been through a lot in her life," Alex said, remembering the time she overheard Crazy Eyes and Taystee talking. Their conversation made Alex see Crazy Eyes in a different light. She just wanted to be loved and accepted. Don't we all, she thought to herself. "Mendez is always like that. Always. It's quite uncomfortable to be around him. You didn't hear this from me, but I heard he slept with some of the inmates here. I'm just trying to stay out of his way," Alex confessed, "I just want to finish my sentence and leave here, never to return again." Her mind went back to how it was before she landed in Litchfield. She was unsure if she'd survive in the real world, especially with Kubra still out there.
Suddenly, Piper appeared with a frown on her face. "Shit, Pipes. I'm sorry, I completely forgot," she said, as she stood up. "You said a few minutes, Alex. I was in there for far more than just a few minutes! You know no one was supposed to be in there today anyway! Fucking Mendez caught me in there and he gave me a shot!" Piper yelled then she looked over at Brynn. "Oh," she scoffed, "so this is why you couldn't meet me? Because you're up the newbie's ass, probably ready to fuck her." She folded her arms. "Piper, listen, I had no other choice but to show her around. Mendez made me," Alex replied, trying to reason, as she moved closer to Piper. Piper moved back a little and then sighed. "Yeah, whatever," she replied, as she left the room. Alex sighed, then put her hands on her hips before sitting down on her mattress. She wanted to go after Piper but what would be the point? They would just argue.
"I understand that. But.. me? There are plenty of other fine women in here. Pretty much everybody I saw in that cafeteria.. was bangable. Except for the officers. Mendez, sleeping with one of the inmates? I'm half shocked and half expecting it. There's a reason he was picking favorites behind that shiny glass wall, no?" Brynn smiled, leaning back onto the cheap mattress, her golden hair spilling all of the way down to the ground. "You'll get out someday. Just remember how lucky you are. You have somebody here to wait it out with. Somebody that you love, somebody that you could spend the rest of your life with. A year with her is probably like a blink in your timeline whenever she's around. I know how the both of you look. Any fool could see that you two have something different than those girls banging in janitorial closets." With a smile, Brynn closed her eyes. Moments later, the same blonde girl stomped into the cubicle, looking a little more shaken up than usual. Brynn sat up to watch, muttering a little greeting towards the blonde.
Watching the ordeal, Brynn sighed a little. It almost pained her to watch the couple fight. Afterward, she moved to sit up, glancing at Alex.
"I didn't mean to keep you from getting it on with your girl. My apologies. I could have gotten somebody else to show me around here. Go after her. She seems the most important right now. Love of your life, I'm assuming." She gave a little smile towards her roommate in hopes to reassure her.
"Nah," Alex said, sighing, "I'm so tired of running after her, y'know? I'm so tired of dealing with the same shit. I love that girl. Fuck, do I love that girl but she's got some serious shit going on with her, man. She wasn't always like this. I remember a time when she and I were perfect together." Alex's mind went back to when she had first met Piper. Sylvester's Bar & Grill, she thought to herself. She remembered Piper's slightly curly, blonde with black roots hair and the way her whole face seemed to light up every time she smiled. Piper was so much more fun back then. Maybe the fact that she went back to boys and prison changed her, she thought, Who am I kidding? Prison changed all of us. "Anyways," Alex scoffed, as tears welled up in her eyes, "Fuck it." She quickly wiped her tears as they fell down on her cheeks and looked around, making sure no one saw her being weak.
Alex leaned back and sat her head up against the cold wall. She looked over at Brynn and said, "Yeah, sometimes being in here with the person you love is amazing but there are also times where it could suck," she paused, "It could really fucking suck." Alex couldn't believe she was sharing so much with a girl she had just met. "Just ignore me," she laughed, "Here I am, confiding in you and we don't really know each other. You could be sent here to kill me, for all I know. You look innocent but those are the ones you have to look out for," she winked.
Prison does that to all of us, Brynn thought to herself. Her brief stay at another penitentiary had taught her that even a week behind bars could mold the toughest of women. She observed that in herself. Lost in her own thoughts, it was only the sound of her roommate's voice cracking that snapped Brynn out of her daze. The blonde tilted her head in pity, watching the glistening tears on Alex's cheeks be wiped away hastily. "You have somebody to wait it out with you. That's pretty amazing. I don't know if optimism is something you're big on, but it can help. You've got a pretty good throng of girls to lean on. It could be a lot worse." Brynn smiled slightly at the tall woman, crossing her arms over her chest as she laid on the cot. While I'm sitting here, like nobody. That's probably what I'm going to be regarded as.., She thought to herself. Who knows? Maybe those girls at the lunch table would befriend her, maybe they wouldn't.
She wasn't going to bet that they would.
Hearing Alex's next words were almost comical. The woman laughed, genuinely, and made eye contact with Alex. "Do I look like I have the resources to shiv you in your sleep? Heck, Vause, I only got here today. It's not like I have much to work with? Anyways, I'm not going to kill you, and I'm definitely not innocent. Heck, you don't even know half of it." She shook her head in humor, shooting her bright smile once more to her roommate.
