story
welcome
Itβs such a shame you died so young. It must have been a shock to suddenly wake up in these gloomy woods without a single memory in your head and a noticeable stillness in your chest. Sadly, thereβs simply nothing that can be done to fix your past misfortunes, whatever they may be. Itβs probably for the best you left behind all those pesky memories, anyway.
No, we donβt focus on the past. Here at Nevermore Academy, youβll learn to adapt to life as the newly undead, and if you do well in our less than traditional academics, you might just find yourself reborn in your next life.
Hopefully it goes better than the last one.
So, youβve gone and died. Quite tragically too, it seems. Not that you remember your death, or much of your life at all. Your memories feel so close, yet so far away, hidden in the fog that surrounds the mysterious Nevermore Academy For The Recently Deceased. Standing tall in a seemingly endless forest, the Academy looms over all your activities, as if itβs actually alive. (Which is quite ironic, considering literally everyone inside its gates is dead.) Academic in only its name, Nevermore promises reincarnation for the lost ghosts who wander through its iron-wrought gates, or the permanent afterlife for those who fail the increasingly dangerous and bizarre tests

academy
introduction
Based on the Webtoon of the same name, Nevermore follows a group of recently deceased young adults who are stuck between life and death. Left in a stage of being βhalf-alive,β these individuals can still feel pain as if they were alive, while equally being able to access their more βdeadβ form, known as a Spectre. Each character suffers from amnesia and only has clues to what their past life might have been like, whilst all the while trying to pass the increasingly dangerous tests put on by the Academy.
Death is a peculiar thing, but being half dead is even more odd. The Academy seems to only amplify these uncanny new abilities one gains from being half-alive, including access to a form more suited to those without a heartbeat. Reminiscent to how one passed away in the mortal realm, these Spectre forms are ghastly and wonderful to behold. Some may be a bride with their hearts carved out, left to die on the altar. Others might stay hidden behind the mask of a plague doctor, left to rot at the hands of a vile disease. There are seemingly endless ways one can manifest as a Spectre, and each comes with their own unique abilities and drawbacks.
The first transformation is always the most painful, they say.

Below are some potential 'Spectre' forms your character can take, but I want people to be creative too. Anyone and everyone is able to make a Spectre form unique to their own character, alongside their own abilities that go with the form.

the
rules
rules
1. This roleplay will be 18+ due to mature themes. This is non-negotiable.
2. This will not be first-come, first-serve! While there are no set roles nor amount of players, one must apply to be in the roleplay with their character. Everyone may submit up to two characters, but is not required if you simply want to work with a single character this time around. Only one character needs to be done for the application process, but I encourage you to finish both on time for a higher chance of the second character also being approved before the roleplay begins!
3. Absolutely no racism, homophobia, transphobia, or anything of the related matters OOC. You will be kicked from the roleplay, and promptly reported to staff members. While the roleplay itself takes inspiration from historical settings and isnβt exactly modern, please understand that isnβt an excuse for you to have characters behave in abhorrent ways on the excuse of it βbeing appropriate for the time period.β The characters are dead and can turn into ghosts, so accuracy isnβt exactly a key detail here.
4. Activity! Iβm hoping to find those who are able to post roughly once a week, or give notification that said post may be delayed at the very least. Discord will be mandatory for those accepted to help with communication. As long as you communicate with me about activity you will not be removed from the roleplay, but understand Iβll be doing my best to keep the plot going.
5. On that note, Iβm also looking for larger posts for this roleplay. If you feel youβre unable to write at least 2-3 paragraphs per post, this might not be the roleplay for you.
'plagued'
Plagued are among one of the more common types of Spectres, due to the overwhelming nature of diseases in the land of the living. Though the appearance of the Plagued varies on the individual, most are dressed in the attire of a doctor with a mask to hide their face. Plagued are often followed by the pungent smell of sickness and death, and can seemingly induce rot on an individual.
'lady in white'
A rare Spectre, due to the unique circumstances of their death. Though often found to be brides, a 'Lady in White' can be a groom too. All that matters is that the individual died on the day they were to be wed, and not a day sooner. Why brides are far more common among this specimen of Spectra is a sad thought to think, one mustn't linger too long on it. Instead, admire the true beauty and elegance of these ghastly apparitions. Often garbed in their wedding attire, these wailing Spectra always seem to have a heart shaped cavity in their chest to represent their lost love. In the presence of a Lady in White, one might feel an overwhelming feeling of dread and loneliness, while a neverending stream of fog follows suit.
'Valiant'
Valiant Spectra are among the more noble of the ghosts. Those who manifest as a Valiant died protecting someone. Their sacrifice has granted them the appearance of a warrior coated in armor, and they're often equipped with a weapon of their choice. Unlike other Spectre, Valiants carry a warm essence to help soothe those around them and assure them that they too will be protected.
'Mirrored'
As the saying goes, jealousy is truly the green eyed monster, and Mirrored are a manifestation of those feelings. Feeling so jealous of another during their time of death, Mirrored may take on the appearance of whoever is speaking to them, and save said appearance to use again. Unable to be satisifed with themselves, these Spectre are able to travel through mirrors to seek out another person to add to their collection of faces. When a Mirrored is inside a mirror, that is when one is able to see their truly ghastly form.
'cryptids'
With a strong desire to run away from everyone and everything in life, Cryptids are peculiar even among the dead. Taking on beastly appearances, these individuals felt that they never truly fit in when they were alive. The abilities of these Spectre's aren't well documented, due to the different nature of each and every one of them. Most of the time, they seem to have highly enhanced senses and a boost in strength.
'scorned'
Scorned are another common variety of Spectre, but are far more volatile than Plagued. Scorned represent those who were wronged in their death, and those who are unable to let go of that anger. While many Scorned are victims of murder, there are plenty that died with such rage in their hearts, it burned through all other rational emotions. Scorned take on a variety of appearances, though they mainly seem to mimic the appearance of the individual when they died. The only difference is the fact that they're completely drained of color, with only red hues still visible. These rage-filled ghosts often struggle to see reason in their Spectre form, and are imbued with the ability to move objects telekinetically. They may also induce rage in others, hoping to make them feel the anger they are consistently experiencing.
