Hope was a funny thing for a commmander to have.

With the way fate twisted its wry neck and spread its havoc, manysurely would have expected Erwin Smith to have reached a point of nothingnes: a void of pessimism as reality struck down with its hammer again and again. Yet, a part of the commander cound't help but feel more invigorated with teh feeling of hope than ever. He'd made it his mission to, in some shape or form, return wall Maria to humanity an finally, there was a possibility. Eren Yeager, as risky and ridiculous as it all seemed, represented a true opportunity for humaniy to gain its much needed advantage. With Eren on side, they could seal the walls once more, and his goal would be complete. At least,t hat's what Erwin had believed, the difficult part had come convicing the rest of the world of such matter.

They'd already won once, finally winning Eren from the Military Police's hands to at least try. The fact alone that the MPs were so insistent of getting rid of even the slightest threat when it could pose such an advantage irked him to no end. The next step in this plan? To have an actual army to take back the walls. That was where the new recruits became vital. Yet, it was not an easy tell. Asking a group of teenagers to risk their lives so willingly for the sake of humanity? Especially after all they'd been forced to live through with the fall and regaining of Trost, it made a hard sell become borderline impossible.

And yet, people had remained. Fearful, yes, but it would be borderline foolish if they weren't. They'd already taken quie a step in earning the man's respect: willing to put their lives on the line when they'd already seen what they'd be handling first hand? It was commendable. Returning from the courtyard and allowing the new recruits to let their own decisions settle, Erwin slinked back into his own office, appreciating what he had expected to be a moment of privacy. Yet the figure on one of the chairs in the room seemed to oppose such a moment. Upon realising that it happeend to only be Tori, he was quick to feel his shulders relax just a little at the sight of her brunette hair.

"Turn out was better than expected." He admitted, returning to his own chair at the other end of the larger desk. How long had she been waiting there? Had she simply been waiting for him? He coudln't be sure, but the thought alone caused his lips to quirk up in the slightest of smiles for a moment. Tori Shoko herself was another ironic factor of the commander's life. For someone who was considered a 'demon' in the eyes of the public and other collegues, the feeling that had resonated in the man's chest at the risght of her alone was anything but. The brunette was a curious one, and one he was more than wiling to be within the presense of. "The fact numbers were anything beyond a handful can be considered a victory in itself, its an upward battle, trying to convince new recruits like that." He sighed, relaxing slightly in the chair as his eyes trailed her.

Was joining the scouts a stupid decision? Caroline couldn't be sure, and she wasn't sure she cared.

Surely, any kind of fate within the scouts would be better than whatever she may have been put through if she'd remained in the underground. Every now and then her mind wondered what would have happened if she had stayed. Would she have followed her mother's fate and just became an object of desire? Would she have been sold into some kind of slavery? Would she have been forced to live some kind of life of crime? She could never be sure, and Caroline was pretty happy to live in a fate where she didn't need to cosnider such factors. Even in a fate where she may be faced with titans on multiple occasions, she'd have chosen that in a heartbeat. All titans could do was eat her after all, that was all.

Whilst the numbers had dwindled slightly from the beginning of the comamnder's speech as they all were dawned with a reality check of a lifetime, a fair few had still remained. Many of them looked like they felt their own death warrants being signed and for many that indeed was the case. In truth, no one exactly looked ecstatic to be joining the scouts, Caroline included, though perhaps that could be blamed on their resounding exhaustion. After all, what had happened in Trost was bound to have a resounding effect on the lot of them.

Grey eyes trailed curiously over the various faces of those who had decided to remain. There were the usual suspects, Mikasa and Armin came as no surprise, Sasha and Connie had already made it retty clear to her they were joining, it would have been an insult if Bertholdt and Reiner handn't. The one face she hadn't quite expected to see still there wqas Jean Kirstein, causing her eyes to widen for a small moment. The girl was sure that he was bluffing when he'd stuttered that he may join the scouts, and she wasn't going to be convinced so easily. Yet there he was.

Needing to satiate her own curiosity, she stepped closer to the male, crossing her arms as she did so. "You really stayed?" She wondered aloud to break the ice. It was notable, the way in which her tone seemed to soften, after all, all she tended to give him prior to this was biting comments and eye rolls. How else was she meant to react to someone so convinced that the best of them would be found within the walls, where she knew the worst resided? "Please don't take this the wrong way, but you surprised me." She admitted, "I didn't think you'd actually join..." It was true, and her tone reflected that, more genuine, almosty respectful. It was almost funny, the way in which one decision could almost entirely change her behaviour.
