I. Introduction
So for the world I'm creating, I was thinking of making a system of magic that I'd like the community to evaluate and give suggestions on how to improve and clarify its concept.
Inspired by Mahouka Kou Kou no Rettousei, Buddhism, occultism
II. Origins
While I have no definite plans of an origin, I don't want it to be a gift or anything of the sort from gods. I want it to be a natural phenomenon that humans and likely other species have picked up and used.
III. Concept
A. Everweave/Ether
The idea of this system of magic starts with a phenomenon named by scientists as the Everweave or simply Ether. It is an invisible field that encompasses anywhere there is space. What it is is a field of mathematical data of everything that occurs in space (eg. The dimentions of a bird in flight, its velocity, the speed of the wind against it, drag, gravity pulling on it, time, space, etc). Imagine the Ether as bed casing, the universe the mattress within it.
B. Nodes
Then there are nodes, areas in the Ether where there is a higher concentration of mathematical, even incomprehensible data, that the ether warps or 'creases' around. The nodes are living humans, beings capable of complex emotions and interiority. What makes them spike up in mathematical data are the emotions, thoughts, etc of these humans. I would like to distinguish humans from animals at this point. Humans are beings that are capable of interiority, while animals aren't. So, a species of fox that is capable of magic is respects as much as any other human. So animals that are capable of magic, must be able to possess 'internality' thus are equally respectable as humans, and are not even considered as animals.
C. Tug and Pulls
Just like tugging and pulling on certain threads of a fabric makes it contract, knowing the correct line of data in the Ether to 'edit' creates an effect. Imagine pulling on the string of a table cloth to make it contract and eventually tip over a vase off the table rather than tipping the vase by hand.
D. Elements affecting magic
Strength and intensity of the 'tugs and pulls' depend on elements:
1.Emotion
The intensity of emotions affect the strength of the 'tug' on the Ether is in the same way it would be with someone tugging destructively at a loose thread of a fabric in anger. There is a balance of emotions, and remaining stoic or emotionless during the period of casting is how to attain that balance. Masters of magic are those who can tame their passions and remain in balance, focused on tugging on the Ether. It isn't to say that emotion is bad however. There are many emotions, and their effects on magic differ. The strongest of the feelings is love. The feeling of being loved or giving love spikes the strength of one's magic. It is said a magician is at his peak when he is married or has found his soul mate
2.Closeness
When nodes, or sentient beings, are in close proximity, there is a stronger tug and pull on the Ether. Groups that are in sync with each other make their individual magics stronger than when they are apart.
3.Genetics
Some people are just born more attuned to the Ether than others. A certain part of the brain is responsible for 'sensing' the Ether and applying changes to it but doctors have yet to locate it. Only magic users are born from magic users. The population of magic users has declined to less than half of the world's total population. But everyone in Damasceane is capable of magic.
E. Casting magic
Through just will, nodes can see what part of the Ether should be edited. Hand gestures and incantations may help focus. Imagine deleting and/or editing a part of a text document to make the whole different. Only a few lines of data of the Ether can be changed at a time and only for so long. e.g. slowing the vibration of molecules of a leg of a person to freeze him in place, etc. What exactly happens doesn't need to be detailed in the RP.
"Carin casts a spell to freeze her opponent's leg."
