Runs with Axes
With further events progressing along with time, most went to the dinner, though a few returned to their own tasks, it was not the ice breaker the Captain had hoped for, but it was a start. Over the next couple of day's time was spent largely in transit to a communications hub in the Artimis sector within UED space, contracts were to be had, and unsurprisingly the source of the disruption was within the ISC. A loosely united collection of worlds that was prone to internal conflict and squables, next to the various rebellions in the Imperium, wild space, and the occasional revolts within the Combine it was one of the most profitable regions for "Free Privateers," Mercenaries and Pirates. So long as one was not an organized faction inside of ISC space the other members couldn't care less.
Still, that didn't much narrow down what they were doing, till bit by bit it did. Near the outskirts Argian Sector in the Gillem System a long and thought to be dormant conflict raged on the 4th planet of the system, Artanis. Overlooking the data on her PDA, Erika was slow to get to her feet, having been laying on her bed as she lazily gazed at the contents. "I like money but I also like sleep... I guess I better summon the rest."
Finally on her feet, Erika enters the commons area and sends a message to the personal PDA's of everyone in the unit, a simple message that left little leeway and was clearly in command. "Commons Room, Fifteen Minutes, drop what you are doing and get here now. We have work."
Pressing Send, it wasn't too long till Sandra found her way to the room, seemingly having been in the room she shared with Fulke. "Huh, already? Damn, good year. So what's up or uh I just piss off till time?" "Just wait around, you get to see me play the part of officer today." "Heh. Alright then."
As the minutes tick by and the rest are assembled, with or without complaint, Erika rolls straight into the briefing, making use of the multimedia displayer in the commons room to showcase the Sector, Star System and Planet.
"Artanis, one of three habitual Worlds in the Gillem System, they had four till the Great War." Not bothering to show what had happened to the 4th planet, Erika zooms in to a continental view. "A temperate world, with a few cities, lots of hills, a few plains, woodlands, bit more comfortable than Mars, main industry seems to be mining and tourism. Population numbers around one billion, Industry is mainly geared to ground warfare of the most basic types.
Durning the Great Galactic War Gilland was wiped out via orbital bombardment and saturation with Nukes, not all of its citizens died but came to reside on the other three hab worlds of the system, some 60 million souls, as Artanis was the most developed of what remained. A majority of the politics, wealth and cultural domenince of the planet fell into the hands of the Gillandians, while the Artanesians were stuck doing most of the work and industrial occupations. Though Sister planets, this state of affairs and the rural minded nature of the Artanesians has led to various disputes and rebellions over the last three hundred years. This time around the Artanesians seem to be rather serious with their aims and goals with a few divisions of troops joining the insurrectionists. The cause of the unrest seems to be over the Central Government's land reform plan, which would have allowed more urban residents to take up land for settlements from the less profitable mines and farms on planet to encourage rural population growth, though with little compensation.
The Artanesians want the Gillandians wiped out among the more radical elements of the rebellion and the more moderate want a more even share of the pie with a democratic government set up. The Gillandians want to prevent this and to save their own necks, decrying the rebels as being unreasonable holdouts from a bygone age. Currently two contracts are being offered, one from the Insurrectionists and one from the Central Government.
Given limited industry in the system, both sides possess limited forces, only a small handful of MS units are on the whole planet and its debatable what sort of condition they are in. The bulks of armed forces are in the form of Infantry and Armored Divisions with some fixed wing and rotary air assets, either side we stand against is going to get steamrolled pretty hard till we run into another Free Privateers force. Though if you get careless they do have the means to make you bleed."
With a few button presses, a number of combined arms forces were shown, with AA, Tanks, Infantry, APCs and IFV's showcased, ancient models based on templates from some five hundred years ago that looked like somewhat modernized ancient earth designs. A pause was then to follow, before she brought up both contracts, or at least the stated pay for both jobs.
The Rebels were offering about the same rate and were in a desperate need to take a section of bases on the Northen landmass, it seemed mothballed weapons and TS's were being reactivated here by the Federal Forces, it was a priority conflict, and the Rebels were outgunned locally. The Central Government, however, was in dire straits on the central plains leading away the Capital City from a sudden mechanized rush that it was barely able to contain. They wanted support to cover evacuations at worst and to push the Rebels back into the hillands and away from the capital at best. The pay however was the same once expenses were caluclated, weapons replenished, armor replaced, and reactors fueled, five to seven thousand credits would be left over, which when one considered a basic infantryman was only getting one to two thousand, then it was still a bit.
"So, what I want from all of you is to answer any questions you have and for what is your pick of the two operations, I can't say you'll get what you want but it helps. I do have some limited information on the order of battle we can expect, also we won't be operating alone across the whole front, but we will likely be thrown at the most difficult spots."
For her part Sandra said nothing as she chewed on some meat jerky of one sort or another, she was interested in seeing how the rest would respond.
