Five in the morning and Gavyn wakes to the sound of his sisters running around the house, frantically trying to dress for school. The sun would soon rise and the opportunity to catch a good picture and that made him intensely happy. He sat up quickly, stretching his arms and back out, he flipped on a bedside light and began to prepare his camera.
Patches was curled at the end of the bed and was granted a small pat to the head. Gavyn wasn't fond of this cat but was beginning to warm up to him. After the sunrise, Gavyn jumped through a shower and dressed for school.
Malachi purred softly, pressing his head into his Human's hand as he was granted rare attention, and stood, arching his lithe body as he stretched and yawned. He followed Gavyn out as he took pictures of the sunrise, and then back inside and munched on a kibble breakfast while his human showered and readied for the day. He didn't exactly enjoy the dry pebbles that was called catfood, but this form didn't agree with much of what the humans ate, so he contented himself. At least he was being fed.
He popped his head up from the small bowl that read 'Patches' when he heard the familiar footfalls of Gavyn. He stood, and trotted over, weaving around his legs in greeting. "Ready for school?" He asked, knowing only Gavyn would understand his words. He often purred in amusement when someone would comment about such a talkative cat, who meowed rather often.
Gavyn reached down and plucked the cat off the floor, "As ever." He spoke responding to Malachi's quedtion. Gavyn took the small cat up to his room, opening the window so that he could get out later. Patches always seemed to know where Gavyn was and generally met up with him after school. After another short pat, gavy left the room closing the door tightly. The loud roar of his Ford Explorer made for a dreadful drive to school. The school year was hurtling toward a delightful end, which meant that the seniors where constantly being shuffled around from class to specific senior assignments. Finally, two in the afternoon, the only quiet time Gavyn could manage to find at school. An incredible long hour later a bell rang and the students where released. Gavyn took off towards the park, hopeful to collect a few natural photographs.
Malachi slept on the bed the majority of the day, still grumpy that he wasn't allowed to follow his Human to school. It seemed pets weren't exactly enjoyed there, and he didn't have his human form just yet, still not being completely accepted by Gavyn. After two long years of being a cat, Malachi really hoped he'd be able to change from this form soon. His ear twitched as his inner clock told him the time, and he stood, stretching again. He let out a loud yawn, and then leaped from the bed to the window that Gavyn had left open for him. He slinked out of the house, and took his usual route to the ground below. He looked around, his whiskers twitching as he took a deep breath of the warm day. He trotted off the property, tail in the air and ears alert. The small bell on his collar jingled softly as he moved along. It didn't take him very long to arrive at the park and locate his human, meowing loudly in greeting, "How was your day?" he asked.
Gavyn laughed picking the cat up, "Everything was as borong a usual, my friend." Gavyn spoke quietly trying not to gain attention from others in the park. Gavyn put Patches back down and begun to take picture of him playing in the grass. School had been rather boring and dreadful, Gavyn was happy to be away from thay place and in the park doing what he loved to do.
Malachi was happy to oblige his human with entertainment. He pawed at the swaying blades of grass, and chased several different bugs. He found a rather delectable patch of grass in the sun and rolled about, occasionally batting toward Gavyn, claws sheathed. He rolled suddenly, his ears twitching as he heard the sound of a dog, and moved to twirl himself around Gavyn's legs, yowling. "The dogs are here!!" He complained, standing between his Human's legs, tail wrapped around one shin.
Gavyn looked around, "Its okay they wont come near you, if they do they are brave." Gavyn was still trying to wrap his head around this whole familiar thing. He was approached by this cat a few years ago. He didnt think too much about it until the animal spoke to Gavyn. It was hard to accept the story that the cat had to tell, apparently this animal was sent by the universe to guide gavyn through life.
Malachi howled a bit more, complaining about the dogs and how they stank even from this distance. "If you'd just accept that I'm a familiar I'd not have to worry about dogs. I'd be bigger than them." He huffed for probably the thousandth time. He blinked his eyes up at Gavyn, and suddenly hissed as a chihuahua came over, yapping at him. "Leave me alone smelly creature!" He yowled, batting at its face with extended claws.
Gavyn sighed, "Do you understand how confusing this is for me?" He glared at the dogs owner and pulled Patches up off the ground. He took of towards his Explorer and put the cat in the passengers seat while the packed his camera up. The drive home was incredibly slow, traffic was unforgiving today.
Malachi set his paws up on the door, his nose almost touching the glass of the window. "It's not that confusing. I'm just here to be a friend." He meowed simply, tail flicking from side to side. He lowered back into the seat, and turned his large eyes to Gavyn, his tail curling around his paws. "Why do you feel it's confusing?" He asked, his eyes slowly closing and opening in that sage like way cats did.
Gavyn snorted in response to his feline, " well i was raised that animals dont talk." He paused taking a breath before continuing'," and then you show up." Gavyn remembered that day very well, its kinda hard to forget a cat strolling up to you and speaking and oddly enough with an accent of age. "How would you have expected me to respond?" Gavyn asked sincerely.
Malachi gave a small chuckle, which as a cat, sounded very odd. "I'm not an animal, I'm a spirit. So that takes care of that. If you'd except that you have a familiar, I won't look like an animal anymore." He meowed exasperatedly, shaking his head rapidly. He paused to lick down a tuft of fur on his chest, "I could also stop with these blasted cat habits and take a real bath." He muttered, which came out in more of a growl. His ears laid back on his head in a sad expression, "You'll come to terms in your own time, I guess." He sighed.
Gavyn thought about it briefly and decided to research the animal later. It was getting dark and Gavyn had finished his dinner, time to do some searching. He didn't find much about the animal, until he dove into his own towns history. It became clear that this familiars had been a part of the towns history as the town itself. The most interesting fact sing that it only occurred in humans with two different eye colors. Gavyn studied for hours before deciding to go and talk to patches. He searched for the cat in the house and found him curled up in a window. "Let's go for a walk." He spoke softly to the cat whilst petting him gently to avoid startling him.
Malachi yawned widely, his tail flicking as his back instinctively arched unto Gavyn's hand as he stood. "Sure." He meowed lightly, turning on the window sill and bumping his head into Gavyn's hand before dropping himself to the floor, tail in the air.
Gavyn walked to the end of his Sub-Sub-divison, if you could call his three house neighborhood that and sat on the curb. ""So I've been thinking about all the information you've given me these past few years." He begun to explain everything and found himself slipping into this thoughts, and babbling on to his friend about the past. Eventually, Gavyn paused to take a breath and wait on his friends reaction. " Accepting you into my life is a very life altering decision, you know?" He begun again and found himself staring into the eyes of the cat, and seeing the animation of the spirit rather than the animal.
Malachi sat beside Gavyn calmly, listening as the boy spoke. He watched him with knowledgeable eyes, and nodded his head. "Yes. It would be rather life altering, but I'm here to be your friend, Gavyn. To help you and talk to you when you may or may not feel like you can talk to anyone else." He meowed calmly. He stood and brushed against the boy's legs. "I can't read your mind, or know your thoughts. I'm only capable to lend an ear if you so choose to talk to me. I know how to find you, where ever you may be. I can also protect you should you ever need it." He explained solemnly. "But only if you accept me as your familiar." He added.
Gavyn thought for a moment, "okay so then how do we do this?" He smiled finally able to find peace with accepting this cat into his life. " is this permanent will you always be around?". Gavyn waited for the beings response, and looked around his surroundings.
Malachi felt a swelling in his chest as the boy smiled at him, and he knew he had finally been accepted. "There is no 'how do we do this' it already is. And yes, I'm a permanent fixture in your life, but no. I don't always have to be around you. I mean, as a cat, I live at your home while you are at school. That shows for something." he said, a small purring laugh rumbling through the cat. He looked around, "But, now that you've accepted me finally, I must show you something. It's a skill all familiars have." he meowed, and then trotted a few steps out in front of the boy.
He turned to face him, and his body began to shimmer slightly, and then began to change. He first changed the color of his coat, and then the kind of cat he was altogether. "I can change myself." he explained as the cat became a small dog, and then, for his final transformation, he became a boy. The same age as Gavyn, with a mixture of blonde and brown in his hair. He turned his gaze to meet Gavyn's, and it was clear he still had the golden eyes of the cat he originally was. "Now, I can tell you my true name. I'm Malachi. Or you can still call me Patches, I guess." he shrugged, and smiled at him.
Gavyn was shocked by the transformation, feeling generally overwhelmed he tried to grasp his thoughts. "I doubt you really want me to call you patches." He smiled at the boy who was now sitting beside him. He laughed at the thought and knew then that calling him patches around his family was going to be hard. Gavyns brain was freaking out trying to logically figure out what had happened.
Malachi shrugged, "It grew on me." He laughed lightly, "If it makes you feel better though, I can stay as a cat." He offered, sensing a kind of distress in Gavyn, though he was unsure of what was bothering the boy. He looked warily at him, curious, and slightly concerned.
Gavyn laughed, "I would rather you not be a feline anymore than necessary." He smiled. "So, why am I so lucky to receive you as a familiar?" Gavyn remembered that Malachi had told him only certain people where granted a familiar. He stood up and started to wonder back to the house, hopeful that Malachi would follow.
