It's the difference between those who like a simple 'I cast fire magic on you' to getting a vivid description of the fire magic from the searing hot , 1000 degrees flames that burns a brilliant shade of azure. Taste.
I get that, to a point. I think detail in those situations can be good, but overloading it can be boring. It just seems that if you write two paragraphs about a single spell being conjured, there's a lot of parts where it will be details that won't be memorable.

That is true. A lot of players don't realize that to make their character shine doesn't mean force-feeding information. This is something a skilled writer will just know intrinsically...and hopefully something others will grow to realize with time.

As a gm, I think if all my players as main characters in my movie. Therefore I want them all to shine. But I can't help everyone...and I can't especially help those who don't want to their characters to shine. At the same time, I also understand that when a person shines too brightly, they can dim out the light of others...or their own lights (something I think you're trying to point out). Therefore, if the players don't know how to dim their own lights (a good roleplayer), I'll do it for them. That's the job of the gm imo. I know how to trim lights. But when I'm searching for players, the ones that can shine on their own are the ones that are my favorite. The ones who have an active imagination and are willing to put their imagination into words. The ones who want their characters to succeed. If make a game, I want players participating to want win while keeping to the rules. That's what makes games fun in my mind. Of course, good sportsmanship is important in games as well (and following the rules of rping).

Because, for me, it's the words they add that bring flavor and realism to the story. It's what's going on in their mind and they are telling me about their characters IC and giving me ideas. I don't get bored when reading about other characters. Still...I can understand those that say they do. When they don't like what they consider unnecessary details. That's why I say it's all a matter of taste.

I sort of agree with you, but I think we're getting a little bit off topic.

Now my next question to you is this: do you think that there really is a high prevalence of people who write long paragraph replies to be condescending towards others, or is it overblown?

I think those that are condescending to other player's writing style to be wrong. Period.

Ah, wait...that wasn't your question. I believe people that are condescending to other styles exist in the world. A majority of the world is probably judgemental and bias towards their styles. That's pretty much human nature. It's still wrong of course.

I like to think better of people, personally. Maybe people are rather proud of their skill, and are just dying to show it to the world?

That's what I tell myself when I look at excessively long replies. They're just dying to show off their character to the world.
