Generations have passed since the time of Halcyon's revenge against Guan Yu and the Revenants' hunt of the Shadow Battalion. Stripped of its resources and its ecosystem in tatters, Earth was quickly becoming incapable of supporting the human race. While some advocated for terraforming Mars and other parts of the solar system, the necessary technology and science were too primitive for such massive projects. Instead a huge exodus was planned. Experimental sciences allowed for the construction of a single use near light-speed drive, and most of the remaining resources were used to construct a gigantic colony ship around it. Packing as many people as they could onto it, the ship was launched towards a solar system believed to be home to a planet similar to Earth.
Thankfully the plan worked, the light-speed drive depositing the ship a few years flight from the solar system, close enough where they could fly in and colonize the planet. The initial years were successful and humanity spread across the planet, of which they officially named New Earth, but it was often called Gaia or Eden by many. Humanity of course reverted to its past habits before long, splitting into several factions and at times going to war with each other. But even so technology and civilization moves forward and now early efforts are being made to terraform the other planets into something livable without the need for special equipment. For humanity at large, hope for the future had been restored.
But not for you.
You have no hope. For one reason or another you have ended up in a situation where either death or a life of disgrace and misery awaited you. Be it because you were jailed for crimes real or imagined, kicked to the streets after a financial disaster, or stuck in a hospital for what remained of your life, you were about to give into despair when you were approached with an offer that would save you and give you a second chance.
The person who approached gave no name and did not identify where they came from, but their offer was one that would restore your hope for a life worth living. If you agreed to become a test subject and serve as a mercenary via the Agency for a year, you would be paid handsomely and allowed to go live your own life, your record wiped clean if necessary. Once you agreed you found out that the experiment was designed to enhance your brain using anything from genetic engineering to cybernetics, vastly increasing your ability to learn. If it worked, you would soon be able to operate on the level of a genius or savant with whatever skills you had trained with. Working as a mercenary would allow you to put this new ability to practical use, letting those in charge of the experiment to gather useful data and see just how successful their work really is. Of course if you spoke of this to anyone, your payment would be forfeit and your life possibly at risk...

Welcome to the third Mercenary Dawn RP, a series about mercs piloting mecha and blowing stuff up! The previous games, run elsewhere, were done with a homebrew system but this time around I'm using a modified Fate Core as I've grown really fond of the system and I'm interested in trying a more narrative system for this kind of RP. If you are not familiar to Fate Core, its a more narrative style of system compared to d20 ones like D&D or Pathfinder. Don't worry if you don't have any experience, neither does half of the current group that's going to be playing! Speaking of which, I currently have 7 people lined up to join this RP (though one may be waiting to join later) and am looking for one more to bring us up to 8. If there are some really good ideas and/or people already experienced with Fate Core I may take up to 3 people but I do not want to go above 10 players.
In regards of what kind of mecha you will be seeing here, I got a lot of inspiration from BattleTech when I originally made the setting and its influence can be felt everywhere and there was also some inspiration from Armored Core in different spots. While the mechs are rather capable in many situations, they are not the end all be all and can not fly. For example, if you go into an open area when there are enemy jets in play, it will hurt.
For anyone who has played Fate before, please be aware that I have changed things to match the setting and story and I am using some of the optional rules like Conditions for the Walkers. You will also be getting skill points at a greatly accelerated rate, but there are a bunch of skills added in for Walkers to help balance that out. Feel free to ask questions if you want to know more about the changes I've made. Otherwise I'll help guide anyone who is selected through the character creation process and learning the system.
While there is a Discord setup for this game, I'll be maintaining the OOC thread for the game on here for important announcements for ease of reference and just in case someone doesn't like to use Discord.
For my requirements for this RP, I don't have much other than following RPN rules, though decent grammar and spelling is appreciated. I do understand that typos and mistakes happen though.
During battles updates will typically come once a week. That should give plenty of time for people to respond. If you know you can't post that week, just let me know.
For this thread, if you are interested, I just want summary of your character idea so I can get a feel for how they would fit into the story. If you prefer to DM it to me because there is background elements you would want to keep hidden should you get in, that's acceptable as well. If you are accepted then I will assist you with building your character sheet to put into the character thread.
