MEMENTO MORI
WELCOME TO THE LIFE HEREAFTER

You're dead. Welcome to the afterlife, the Hereafter. You're going to be Judged. The sum of your life will be weighed and measured. After Judgment, you will face your Eternal Fate.

You desire a second chance? Hmm...well, are you deserving of a second chance? There are so many others, some far more worthy than you, seeking another life as well. Perhaps you will prove to be of use, protecting the balance between what is Life and Death. Do you think yourself capable of defending this delicate balance?

If that is what you believe, then you are ready. Become a

Collector

, a harvester of lost and wayward souls. My Collectors are known by many names, but perhaps you will recognize the term Reaper. Much like the Grim Reaper of legends and tales, you will find and collect the souls of the departed. These ghosts have been trapped within the realm of the living for a variety of reasons, and must be captured to face their Judgement. We call them

Specters

, dangerous beings whose mere presence upsets the natural balance of Life. They disrupt the natural flow, and must be brought to justice.

Do you think you have what it takes to fight these creatures? Can you bring these poor souls to the Hereafter for Judgment? Only the strongest of souls can accomplish such a task. And so many others have failed where you seek to succeed. Perhaps you will be different.

Do not disappoint me.

The Appendix

Here you will find all the information you need about the world in which Memento Mori takes place in. You can find more information about the Collectors and Specters here, as well as the realm known as the Hereafter. If you have any questions regarding the information found here, please feel free to send them in and I will answer them to the best of my ability. If you would also like to contribute some information or lore to the Appendix, please feel free to share your ideas with me, and we'll see about making some additions.

Regarding Classifications

Below you can find all the information you need about Collectors, Specters and the Detectors. If you have any questions, or would like to contribute, please feel free to message me about it.

  • Primarily dwelling within the Hereafter, the Collectors serve as Death's servants. Tasked with the collection and retrieval of lost souls, or Specters, the Collectors are always entering and leaving the Hereafter. Within the realm of the Living, they can choose to appear to the Living. Though their appearance is distinguishable, typically appearing paler than the Living. They also exude a dark aura, known to lower the temperature around them and cause some anxiety to arise in the hearts of the Living. However, for the most part, they go unseen. Only their aura left in their wake.

While they can enter and exit the realm of the Living freely, they are subject to Fatigue. Their existence within the realm of the Living is made possible by the potent energies of the Hereafter, and being apart from it for too long will leave them in a weakened state. If they remain in the realm of the Living for too long, they will simply dissipate and reform within the Hereafter. There, they must stay until their bodies have had time to recharge and regain their strength. This also occurs when a Collector is defeated. Instead of dying, they simply reform in the Hereafter.

Each Collector is granted a Harvester. A Harvester can be likened to the Grim Reapers scythe. It is a unique weapon that is used for the collection of Specters. It can take any number of forms, typically based upon the Collector's personality or personal preference. A Collectors Harvester is special, and can only be used by their one and only master. It can be summoned when needed by calling its name. For a Harvester to collect a Specters soul, the Specter must be thoroughly weakened. Once in a weakened state, the Harvester will absorb the soul and trap it within itself. The Collector must then deliver the soul to the Hereafter for Judgement. Only one soul can be contained within the Harvester at a time. As far as harming the Living, the Harvester is completely useless. Should a Collector attempt to kill or injure a Living being with their Harvester, it will simply phase through them, leaving them completely unharmed.

The addition of a new Collector is a rare occurrence. Death is rather particular about who he chooses to carry this responsibility. Those who have been Judged worthy of becoming a Collector have the opportunity to live again, albeit with a strict purpose and duty to fulfill. While some may choose to exist as a Collector indefinitely, there are others who grow weary of hunting and harvesting Specters. Those who do, give themselves up to their Eternal Fate. As for those foolish enough to avoid or neglect their duties as a Collector, they are promptly striped of their title and given up to face their Eternal Fate.

Collectors within the realm of the Living act much like ghosts, only seen when they wish to be seen. Their interactions with the Living must be kept to a minimum. For the most part, they are incorporeal, and can phase through walls and solid objects at will. They must make a conscious decision to affect the world if they wish to interact with solid objects, such as picking something up or moving something. It is considered taboo to take advantage of these powers, as it would upset the Living to see things moving about, seemingly on their own. Collectors are free to act like one of the Living, however they must not seek to continue their former lives or meet with anyone they knew while alive.

As far as damage and destruction goes, it is bound to happen. However, there are certain precautions that can be taken to minimize the damage done to the world of the Living. When entering into combat with a Specter, a Collector must invoke a protective barrier, known as a Murum Mortis. A fairly large area is then encapsulated by a barrier of light. While all appears normal from the eyes of the Living, everything is frozen in time for the Collectors and Specters within. From there, the Collector may engage the Specter. Should the Collector succeed, any damage sustained within the barrier will be reversed. It will appear as if nothing had happened once the barrier drops. However, should the Collector be defeated, or the Specter flees, the barrier will be forcibly dropped and any damage done will be made reality.

The Hereafter

The Hereafter is known by many names. The afterlife, purgatory, the underworld or limbo. It is the realm of the Dead, and is ruled over by Death. There are various planes of existence within Hereafter, ranging from glittering metropolises to barren wastelands. While waiting to face Judgement, most souls will dwell here. As they are merely souls, things such as hunger and thirst no longer pose as a danger.

At the heart of the Hereafter is the Arcem Mortis. Souls enter here to face Judgement, and to face their Eternal Fate. Judgement involves the weighing of their mortal life. Their actions against others, affect on the world and sum of their existence will be weighed. Some will enter into Paradise, others may be reincarnated, while those deserving of neither will be plunged into the Void. On very rare occurrences, a soul may be Judged worthy of becoming a Collector. They may choose to accept, or decline and opt for a different Fate.

The Arcem Mortis also serves as the central hub for the Collectors. They may train with one another here, or discuss tactics and missions. There is space for them to dwell here, from sleeping quarters to dining areas, the Arcem Mortis shifts and changes to accommodate the needs of its inhabitants, the Collectors. It is here that Death posts missions, specific tasks for Collectors to pursue. They typically involve finding and harvesting a Specter, but can also range from protecting a Detector to dispelling an Anomaly.

Presiding over the Hereafter is Death. An mysterious and omnipotent entity, he is the decider of Fates and Judge of souls. He commands the Collectors, sending them out to the world of the Living to quell the restless and destructive Specters.

Those classified as Collectors may use the various Portam's located throughout the Hereafter. Large gateways, these portals transport the Collectors to various points within the realm of the Living. They are typically out of the way, so that entering Collectors will not simply appear in the middle of a crowd.

The Hereafter is home to the Collectors. It is the place where souls comes to wait, eagerly or reluctantly awaiting to face their Eternal Fate. Many reside here, though few wish to remain.

Current Missions

Found at the Arcem Mortis is a Mission Board. Every so often, Death will post specific tasks here for Collectors to undertake. It is their duty to fulfill these missions, and to continue to preserve the balance between Life and Death.

General Guidelines
  1. RpN rules apply here. Violence is to be expected. Cursing will be allowed. As for romance, anything beyond kissing must be fade-to-black.
  2. No god-moding, auto-hitting or killing without permission. Try to be fair when it comes to combat. Don't incite out-of-character drama.
  3. While I won't be too strict about it, please try to keep in mind a posting order. Try to allow enough time for everyone to respond. This is especially important during combat. Please be respectful of others, and allow them a chance to react/retaliate before posting again.
  4. And last but not least: Have Fun!
  5. These rules may be subject to change. Updates will be announced accordingly.
