Magic warned him that someone was coming; the scent of fresh pine tickled his tongue. He wanted to turn and check โ it was that medic Erykios, wasn't it? something about his magic reminded Shrike of an ancient wilderness, an old past before hunters where magic had been hidden but free โ but the boy didn't turn, didn't check, because maybe he was strong enough; maybe the medic was just passing by and not because he'd noticed him โ
No such luck.
A hand fell upon his shoulder; the boy tensed at the touch, wrapping his magic even tighter around him โ he begged magic for the medic to leave, but magic only cooed at him, and Shrike cast his gaze downward, ashamed.
"I'm okay," the boy murmured, not all that okay. His eyes were sticky and heavy with fatigue. He refused to rub them, not with so many people here and watching.
He was tired, close to falling asleep. He might even be able to here โ the auditorium was much more familiar than his magical room. Less lonely, too.
But he had to pay attention.
How else would he know what was going on here? He couldn't afford to be a slacker; how then could he ever be his brother's saviour?
No such luck.
