9 o'clock in the morning, the festival is just beginning!

cooltext348473710034615.png

"hello, this is your local weather woman and I am here to give you the weather for Maple tree Village! today is going to be a clear and wonderful morning in Maple tree, everything seems so perfect for the festival coming up at-- in fact it should be happening now, later there might be more rain. In fact, did all of you here that storm last night? It sure was a loud one! that's all for today folks, tune in tomorrow for another weather cast!"

"hi and thank you for turning into our show, I hope you all know that today is the new years day festival! It starts at 9 o'clock sharp! don't be late!"

Emmie

The day was cool. The lingering winter chill mixed with the fresh warmth of spring lent for perfect festival weather in Emmie's mind. Tote in hand, she walked towards the empty booth and set her things down beside it. Rather than participating in the activities this year, she would be the activities. Her new full time job at the Mapletree library consisted of far more than checking materials in and out to residents. Now, she would play a vital part in outreach and patron experience. Her first task: set up a booth at the New Year's festival promoting the library's upcoming events and plans for the new year.

From her tote Emmie pulled a plastic banner that read "Spring into Reading!" decorated with various flowers that were made of books in bright cartoon-y colors. She spread the banner across the front of the booth, and then proceeded to pull various pamphlets and calendars from the depths of her belonging's and fanned them out on the booth's tabletop. There was a bundle of free pens with the Mapletree library's logo printed on them, and Emmie set them out among the propaganda for people to take home with them. It wasn't the most amazing booth, but it worked.

Emmie took a seat behind the booth in a very uncomfortable lawn chair and proceeded to watch the Mapletree residents from where she sat. At noon a coworker of hers, a sulky teenage boy, would come and take her place so that she could enjoy the rest of the day. For now, Emmie was content to sit and people watch.

Maximillian rolled strolled up to his booth/pen with his 7 personal dogs, 2 puppies in his hand, and 2 bearded dragons on his shoulder. To his right had 2 cats on harnesses. His staffordshire, Teddy, held another french bulldog pup in his mouth. He opened the door to the dog pen and they all filed in nicely. He moved to the second pen and set all the puppies in it, smiling as they started rough housing and wobbling around on slightly unstable paws. The last pen had a tower for the cats to climb and much higher walls to keep them from jumping out. Her removed their harnesses and then let them get comfy on the tower, making sure to lock the pen behind him. Finally he went to a temporary tank he'd set up on the main table for the bearded dragons and set them inside chuckling as one of them refused to let go of his shoulder, "Alright, Alright, you can stay. But yo better be good for business." He relented.
As he finished setting up he heard King start up barking, he whipped around, bringing his fingers to his mouth, and let out one sharp whistle to get is attention. The dog in question turned to face him but continued barking. "Really, sir. Is that what we're gonna do today?" He asked, one hand on his hip. King let out one more defiant bark, as if to say: 'I'm shutting up 'cause I want to, not 'cause you told me to.' Then he went back to gnawing on Fat's ear.
"That's what I thought." Maxi said smugly, giving some scritches to the bearded dragon still on his shoulder.

Luna

With the sun being much higher in the sky than it was a mere few hours Luna was just about ready to open up the booth she's been working hard to set up for the past hour or so. The booth itself was nothing special. There was a cute banner with some cartoon animals drawn on it along with a mini fridge to store some of the milk and eggs she planned to give away to anyone who wanted some during the festival. Beside the booth was a pen holding: two calfs, three chicks, and one lamb. Along with a sign saying they were up for adoption.

Luna, herself, didn't expect anyone to have the room or the knowledge to care for these animals correctly. But by some off chance that someone did she would be more than happy to let them care for one of these animals. If not she still had plenty of room to raise them herself.

Luna moved to the pen shortly after opening up her booth to greet the animals who were all bustling about. "I'm glad you all seem to be enjoying yourselves." She said with a small laugh and proceeded to hand treats to the six animals before stepping out the pen to take a seat on a small stool placed behind the booth and glance around at the other booths that were setting up. All were rather appealing to her and she couldn't wait to walk around once she was able to take a break.

5b3f0a1062a5465f7ab2a27d79265b58.jpgBeing received at midnight with storm and thunder was quite the unexpected welcome to get from Maple Tree. He wasn't really the superstitious type of guy, but damn... "Dude I just got here..." He said up to the skies after a rumbling thunder right before opening for the first time the door to his new home. "So ominous man. Just give me a chance will ya?" said sighing before closing the entrance, finally getting to meet the cold furniture and temporary residence as long as he was fulfilling his service at the Maple Tree's fire department. He wasn't retreating. No matter how bad it was looking the first day, no matter how complicated it was going to be from now on, he was leaving no space to surrender as an option.

The next morning was a beautiful day to be alive if you asked him. Birds chirping outside of his bedroom, the sun yet to appear over the horizon and the sight of the town at dawn from his house, or you might say his neighborhood, but that was still quite the sight for someone as high spirited as Elias. He was lucky enough to have some food at the pantry his local colleagues left him as a welcoming gift, it wasn't much, but he felt deeply grateful for their gesture. It'd feed him for at least 2 days until he got to know where local stores and grocery shops were located. He'd completely forgotten about the midnight storm at this point while cooking some "Huevos rancheros" with one of the two habanero peppers left at the pantry. The smell of his breakfast and later spicy taste got him ready to go, getting a cold water bath and dressing decently for a proper presentation. Wine red button-down shirt paired with tight blue jeans and a pair of brown boots ready to go. Perfume and a second shirt to leave at the car just in case.

Driving all the way to the fire station, his eyes met the town by day being illuminated with the sunrise on some street walls and floors with an light orange tone quickly fading to the building's colors. The looks of the townsfolk and lively moods all around from both young and elders felt to him like a well orchestrated reception by everyone. On his path there was also just two squares away from home a general store he found to be conveniently close and a pharmacy another block away, firefighters sure know where to set you at, he thought randomly. The green coming from trees, bushes and gardens was more comfortable than how he usually felt it back at the city, making him wonder on what was it that nature gave people their energies. Do countrymen and women have better lives than us?

Arriving at the fire station some minutes later, Elias got introduced to half of the team with a quick tour around the building's offices and general parts of the facility. He was expecting his visit to last more time, but the captain told him not to worry about it since there wasn't much to show around from a town's small firehouse, plus he'd check on every other detail once he's back tomorrow to cover his shift. "But right now..." added the fire captain "I'll need you to join us at the truck team for the parade. It'll help you know the town and the people a bit more ok?" looking at him waiting for his affirmative answer "Yes sir, you got it." Elias answered with a firm, confident tone in his voice. Though his eyes never helped at showing people his friendly side, speech clarity was a good tool to assert his interest. His last boss at the city firehouse was much more strict and grumpy with newcomers, particularly when it came to dressing codes which Elias never got used to, but at least Eli told the newbies to not pay much attention to his cranky temper and that he'd stay there in case they needed help. This new captain turned out to be more warm than he thought at first sight, and now that he knew about a parade going on and the weather woman's voice at a distance confirming the news through a portable radio, sudden enthusiasm rose to his head for the town event that was coming.

AlthaeaSweetwater.png

Althaea woke up to a crack of sunlight through their window at around 7:30 AM, and although pleased with the prospect of ringing in the New Year with a nice, sunny day โ€“ especially after yesterday eveningโ€™s storm, which Althaea was more than happy to tune out in slumber โ€“ they were also quite tempted to just sleep in. Holidays came rarely for Althaea due to the nature of their work, and they quite liked the idea of spending these days to catch up on sleep. However, since becoming a doctor in Mapletree Village, thatโ€™s never actually happened. Being new to the village and wanting to take every opportunity to ease into the community, Althaea made it a point to attend all the events that had been held thus far.

The New Yearโ€™s festival, though, was especially not a day that Althaea could afford to miss โ€“ unless they wanted to risk their professional image, that is. This event, Althaea had decided, was the perfect opportunity to start becoming more involved with the community and the good doctor was going to set up a booth of sorts.

The concept was simple: A new year, for many, means the opportunity for a new start whether this meant a new diet, a new fitness regimenโ€ฆ

โ€ฆand for almost equally as many it means a good maybe one to two weeks of attempting to incorporate those changes before going back to routine.

Itโ€™s a hard reality, but change is difficult. It becomes even more difficult when people try to make these changes drastically. Althaea understood that nature of change quite well and thatโ€™s where they wanted to come in โ€“ to show people that change is a process and that they had support available to them.

With the thought of helping people and the logistics of setting up the booth starting to emerge from the fog of sleep, Althaea slowly got up out of bed, had a nice stretch, and went about their morning preparations before heading out the door and making their way to the festival.

It was around 8 AM when Althaea arrived and started to formally set up. Around 45 minutes later where Althaea had gone to work was a booth with informational pamphlets of all sorts laden atop a table draped with a tablecloth that clearly advertised โ€˜Mapletree Clinicโ€™ in front. Towards the back end of the table was a tabletop display board decorated with posters detailing a variety of health tips with a header that read โ€˜New year, new you? Advice on how to stay new.โ€™ On the front, right-hand side of the booth was a bowl of sugar-free candies and chocolates for people to sample, and on the left-hand side was an assortment of free pens.

No healthcare information booth was complete without free pens, after all. Althaea themself took to standing beside the table, twirling one of the said pens in their left hand.

Althaea had a warm smile on their face, content with simply watching everyone else set up beneath a sunlit sky. Althaea was, however, also specifically looking out for 1) a booth selling pastries that they would be excited to have as their breakfast for the day and 2) Cassie. Althaea did mention the booth to the ever-hardworking nurse that worked alongside them in the clinic but made sure to explain in the days preceding the festival that helping out at the booth was optional. Althaea was definitely of the opinion that Cassie deserved a break for the new year if she chose to have it. Still, it would be nice to say hello.

location: the festival!!
Marina had spent entirely too much time making sure she looked nice for the festival. She eventually settled on a rose pink ruffly top paired with a midi-length white skirt, her trusty beige coat covering her from any lingering chill in the air. She was rarely late. Could anyone even be late for a festival? The weather woman's voice had faded out long ago by the time she was ready and done fussing with her hair, which refused to cooperate. She really needed to cut it. For today, she tossed it up into a high bun secured with a pretty pearl clip - much messier than she usually liked, but it just wasn't happening for her this morning.

She was just glad she had a day off from teaching and being 'on'. As much as she loved her job and her students, she was very excited to maybe get a little day drunk today. Marina wandered around, stealing a pen from every booth she could and slipping them into her purse (she was always losing her pens) and maybe a sugar-free chocolate or two. Except they were kind of gross.

Marina stopped in front of the library booth, smiling softly at the young librarian. "Good morning," she greeted pleasantly, plucking a pen and dropping it into her purse. Marina learned very early on to always be nice to the librarian. However, she... didn't quite know this one yet. She'd spent so much of her time last year working hard with her students and then she'd had to go to her parents' home unexpectedly for some time... things just got away from her. "I'm not sure we've met yet, I teach at the local school. I'm Marina Yi." She nodded her head respectfully at Emmie.

Cassie was running late on this particular day, she wasnโ€™t a huge fan of the festivals mostly because she didnโ€™t know how to interact with most of people. She had a few of her very close friends, but other than that people made her a little nervous. On top of that, whenever she would get nervous the knots when she would get very clumsy and things would normally go wrong for her. Today was no exception, she accidentally burnt her toast and stubbed her toe on the bed. Finally leaving the house at 9 oโ€™clock, she was already supposed be there and that was stressing her out.

It was not a long walk to the town square, but she didnโ€™t really want to cause the doctor any trouble. After all they were going to be able to introduce themselves to new people, tell them what they are doing during the year and make sure people knew what they were about. She was very eager when the doctor had told her about this, sheโ€™ll number clapping happily about it because even in her shy ways she still would get very excited about things. This was definitely going to be a good thing for their clinic, she absolutely loved working with the doctor.

She quickly made her way into the area, waving and saying hi to everybody who was there. The turnout was amazing, everybody was so interested to celebrate the new year and it was very important to celebrate. They were truly a unique village, of course they had the harvest goddess on their side and that made things a lot easier. One thing that did make her uncomfortable, was the amount of people coming in from the big cities as usually that would cause problems for the townspeople. But, that wasnโ€™t her job after all.

She ran up to the doctor when she finally arrived, letting out a breath as she panted a little bit because she ran most of the way here. โ€œI am terribly sorry that Iโ€™m late! Wouldnโ€™t you know, this is the one day that everything would go wrong! Iโ€™m still upset about my burnt toast!โ€ She shook her head, the toast was probably the least of her problems but she was hungry. She looked around, soon enough she would be able to eat some of the good festival food. She smiled a little bit, putting a hand over her mouth and excitement showing all around her.

โ€œFree beer! And wine!โ€ The woman began to holler, as she held a tray with many different kinds of alcohol. It was her job, to let people taste what the pub had to offer and while she liked her job, she really wanted to be at home sleeping. This was way too early for her, in fact most of the festivals were which she really had every intention of talking to the mayor about. Still, she had bright smile on her face as people would come over to taste what they had to offer. On another tray which was in her other hand, she offered little snacks for everybody to have while they walked around.

Occasionally she would get a teenager trying to sneak one, but Macy was one step ahead of them as she quickly shooed them off. She had to refill her tray already, which was odd because it was so early in the morning but whatever made people happy. She was wearing a small barmaids outfit, that fit her pretty well and was really good at selling things. Granted sometimes it was because of her looks, which bothers her from time to time because she was hoping that there was more to her than something like that.

After a little bit of time, she could feel her arms getting tired and she had the set down the trays. Rubbing her arm slightly before lifting them up again, high in the air and grumbling about having to stand there before smiling. โ€œAll our hops and fruits are locally grown!โ€ She smiled brightly, she did like the taste of what they sold and it was probably the finest that they have ever had.

Emmie

pinklemonade pinklemonade

Emmie's booth was slow. To be fair, she didn't have anything nearly as exciting going on as some of the other stands. She could see the town vet and his parade of animals from where she sat, and watched them listen to his every command in amazement. To be able to maintain so many animals at once took serious talent. Emmie mentally applauded the man.

"Good morning. I'm not sure we've met yet, I teach at the local school. I'm Marina Yi."

Emmie pulled her attention away from the vet to see the young woman in front of her. She looked to be about Emmie's age, and was dressed rather nicely. "Oh! Sorry about that, I was distracted by the animals." Emmie stood up and held out her hand. "I'm Emerenta Aster, Emmie for short.". Marina didn't look familiar to Emmie. In fact, there were plenty of new faces around Mapletree that hadn't been here when she left for school. Mapletree was relatively small compared to other town's. Emmie wondered what was bringing the sudden influx of people. Maybe her mother would know. She would have to ask when she got home that evening.

"If you're a teacher the Mapletree library has plenty of great resources for you to take advantage of. If you teach younger children we have plenty of story-times and educational, but fun, events for children. For example, next week one of our staff is teaching kids how to make baking soda rockets out of old soda bottles. If you're teaching middle school or high school we have things for teenagers too. Free clubs for teens who like comics, gaming, and art. There is honestly something for everyone." Emmie took the moment to breath in. The spiel was a mouthful. She was sure she would have to give several variations of it before her shift had ended for the day.

"Please, take some of these." Emmie gathered up event calander's and booklets featuring library information and handed it to Marina. "If you have any questions, or need to get in touch, here is my card." From small pile Emmie pulled out a business card with her name embellished on it in a glossy, raised, font. "Oh, and before I forget. Happy New Year." Emmie smiled at Marina.

"Join the library. Raise hell."

A few curious glances were sent to the amiable looking man with an easy smile walking into town. Could be because heโ€™s dressed like Maple Tree is an island paradise: shorts, straw-hat, tropical shirt and all. Or maybe it had something to do with his ingenious way of carrying luggage. An end of rope tied around his waist, the other to a little wagon bouncing along behind him with his suitcases comfortably on top. Then again, people might just be envious that Daisy likes to pretend sheโ€™s a neck pillow and is happily riding along on his shoulders. Whichever reason it was, the quizzical looks went unnoticed since Davie was instead too preoccupied with non-existent bedhead. Gotta look your best when surprising old friends you havenโ€™t seen in seven years. Everybody knows that!

โ€œListen to me Daisy-โ€ a pause to make sure she was listening. She wasnโ€™t but he continued anyways, โ€œtry not to embarrass me in front of my friends when we find them, โ€˜kay?โ€ All at once he halts as a sudden realization dawns on him. He slaps a hand on his forehead and shuts his eyes before letting out a slow groan, โ€œWe forgot to get wrapping paper! Whatโ€™re we gonna do!?โ€ Daisy and the folks in earshot didnโ€™t know or care. โ€œOh goddess I hope the store is open tomorrow.โ€ He brought down his hand to his chin in a moment of very deep and totally serious thought then muttered, โ€œMaybe somebody is doing giftwrapping.โ€ That possibility was enough to perk him up and he started walking again, trouble dashed away as quickly as it came.

Davie eventually made his way to the festival grounds as inconspicuous as one could ever be. His eyes immediately started to dart from figure to figure in search of any and all familiar faces. Not finding any, well, not the ones he was really looking for in that disorganized lookover through the crowd, Davie allowed himself a second to simply enjoy the moment. Decorations were up and booths were finishing final preparations just as visitors started to file into the square. It wasnโ€™t hard for him to amusingly notice how little things changed in the years he had been gone. Sure there were lots of faces he didnโ€™t know but Maple Tree still felt the same. Peaking up to the heavens Davie noted that the sky was clear as crystal. Simply perfect weather for a perfect day.

โ€œBeen too long.โ€ Sighing happily he continued the march that skirted around the main festival area.

He actually intended on being a responsible Davie and making the inn his first stop. Drop off the bags, grab a room and check if he was needed anywhere. That was the plan, but he was most certainly keeping his eyes peeled.

Morning. A time Ivy found herself having an interesting relationship with. As a child and teenager, she despised it.

The bright light seeping through her window and blaring right into her eyelids. The sounds of happy morning birds, both literally and metaphorically, filling up her room and suffocating her. The process where she goes through the most excruciating pain imaginable for a detective as herself. Sleep exhaustion.

However, upon taking on the title of flower shop clerk, she found herself forced to reluctantly adapt. Which led to many rude awakenings first and many customers having been greeted to the dreadful sight of a half-awake and grievously moody Ivy who has not fully finished her coffee which often brewed terribly after she rushed all over the house. It was a rough start though she managed to adjust and soon, she found herself faced with the shock that passed people's faces when they'd hesitantly enter the flower shop to see a strangely cheery and charming clerk in the place of the horror from a week ago. Something small but something she found strangely enjoyable in a morbid slightly sadistic way.

That said, even today, which required her to wake up earlier than usual, she managed to wake up today with a grin on her face and wide eyes ready for the day. After all, it had felt like centuries since a festival has happened in Mapletree. Long grueling centuries where every day was a torture. Well at least that is how the past days felt as they built to this very duo of days despite them being fairly decent. Especially upon being reminded that not only will tomorrow be her birthday, but it will be her brother's first spring festival, the male having moved into town a little after this very celebration. Which made the fact that he was planned to be a bit late so he could scramble to decorate his cart more terrible than it sounded alone. And before he could reply, he was assured she'll handle the selling of his good since her cart was luckily ready and pushed the stammering male out the door so he could go off and enjoy the festival. And in a matter of minutes, the sign that read "Fields of the Oaks" in impeccable painted cursive had "and Mapletree Pastries" scrawled right beneath it, and the crowd of flowers that covered her cart surrounded a few trays of pastries in what she found to be an exquisite display. Yes, some of those flowers may be possibly toxic but it leads to some very good puns.

Everything seemed perfect. That was until she attempted to push the cart, the cart practically overstuffed with flora with the baked goods only adding to the weight. Ivy found herself stubbornly denying the fact that she may have placed too much stuff on the cart as rather than lessen the bundles of flowers on the counter, she simply continued to push. Grunts and heaves filled the air as she shoved the cart, heaving it across the town and after what seemed to be a hour or so of shoving, finally got into the fair.

Ivy released a sigh of relief as she finally arrived at a barren spot to park her cart, panting as she finally took a break and doubled over to catch her breath. Despite her physical exhaustion though, she found herself assuring herself that it was fine. As though the fact that she barely managed to push it here. Though she needed something cold to drink after that.

As if by chance, she looked to see a lady standing right next to the spot she dragged her cart to. "Why hello there! Wonderful festival we're having, isn't it," She greeted the woman cheerfully, almost oblivious to how breathless her voice sounded as her eyes lowered slightly to see what was in her hand. Drinks! A gift from the force! They were alcoholic yes but she was desperate. Besides,

"What are you serving, if you don't mind me asking?" She asked the lady with an eager grin as she straightened up and seemed to catch her breath, approaching her but remaining close to her cart as she leaned on it slightly.

Weakling.

Pathetic.

Baby.

So-so.

Give up.

Each word triggered a wave of frustration in the woman. Her brows knitted together, tears threatening to pour from her eyes, Camellia raised her arms upward once more, her hands gripping tightly at the wood in her palms. With all her strength, all her might, she cried out as her arms swung downward, the hammer striking the forsaken stone before her.

Pathetic. The words were illuminated in a bright white light before her, the colour and result like salt, pouring onto her wounded ego and heart.

"Doll, it ain't gonna happen." The plump man sighed, leaning against his booth, "Give it up already and let someone else give it a try." Camellia's eyes narrowed with deviance; she dropped the large hammer in her hands, lifted a foot then battered the life out of the fake stone with her heel. "You've RIGGED this!" She declared vehemently before darting off, ignoring the yells and swears from behind her.

***

'Today sucks...' Camellia muttered into herself as she sipped on the straw to her cola. Sitting on the pavement at the entrance furthest away from the games area, the redhead was sulking; after her daring escape, she had been confronted by Marcus and the man running the 'Test of Strength' game. What followed was a scolding of a lifetime, humiliation and a ban from her playing the game for the rest of the festival.

Now, Camellia was dramatic, but never so dramatic that she'd just randomly batter an innocent item with her foot honestly, she had a perfectly good reason! You see, like all festival games, you got a little prize, but in the 'Test of Strength' game, if you were able to strike that bell at the top of the tower, you'd get a dolphin plushie. A FIVE FOOT dolphin plushie. There were only five available, with no restocks, no additional prizes, nada. Such a limited, adorable and precious prize was something she NEEDED to get, and this guy running it! Oh, he was just a jerk! You could only try once, then you were sent back to queue! She had tried eight times and got no further than a quarter up this tower, and that, quite frankly, was bullshit. Never had she ever come across such an awful game, yet never had she come across such a wonderful prize... So, you see, she was completely justified in having a mini freak-out!

... Okay, maybe not...

A sigh escaped her lips. With no chance of winning her dolphin, melancholy had become her best friend, holding her in a tight, uncomforting hug. However, that would soon change when she spotted a certain someone standing around, a certain strong someone... Maybe she was banned, but Caden... He wouldn't be, right...? He was used to her ridiculous requests and despite the occasional grumble, he didn't seem to mind... Her lips began to pull upwards into a smile. Jumping onto her feet, she shed off her sorrow and perked up, "Caaaaden! Oh, Caaaaaden!!" Her voice rang out loudly and, before he had a chance to escape, she pounced.

"Caden, hiiiiii!" She greeted the taller male as she materialised before him, her cola clasped between her hands, smile wide and eyes sparkling. "Is that a new shirt? It really suits you, you know! You look as good as always!" She beamed. Now, usually, she would give the other person a chance to breathe at this stage, make some idle conversation while keeping as sweet and pleasant as possible, however? Caden knew this routine by now and would obviously know she just needed him to do something, so she wasted no time; "Hey, so? Could I ask you a favour? A teeny, tiny favour?" She asked sheepishly, shifting her weight to one leg as her features became more apologetic, "It's really quick! And I can compensate you for it! You can have a sip of my coke!" She thrust the bottle towards him, "Or I can buy something here for you! Anything! Promise!"

Tired. Tiredness was what he felt most days now. He had bags beneath his eyes at such a depth he would get charged for extra luggage. It was his own fault really, it always was. Despite being told to take more rest, miss a day, have a weekend free: He couldnโ€™t. Caden was a workaholic in a sense; he felt indebted to Alexandre and just the thought of not supplying him with ores and stones left a lump in his throat.

Heโ€™d entered the mine the previous night, hacking away at the walls and filling up on the previous goods and when he finally left; light filtered in and he remembered about the festival- Great.

Caden had already dropped off the minerals at the blacksmith store; treating Alexandre to some coal and an abundance of silver. Thankfully he had a fresh set of clothes at the humble abode, probably set out for a time like this; Bless Alexandre, he really did look out for him, especially with a cup of black coffee that would soon burn his tongue and smack him right in the chops to waken up.

He sipped at his cup, nursing his headache that came from pulling another all-nighter. Two pills and he should be right as rain. Caden caught the shape of a note that nestled on top of the neatly folded clothes, intrigued he lifted it up and read;

Do not stretch,
Do not stain,
Under no circumstances do you lose the tie.
~Alexandre

โ€œTie?โ€ Caden spoke out loud, flipping the note over to check the back. โ€œWhat tie...โ€ He set the cup down, lifting the folded shirt up and instantly grimacing at the style. It was collared for a start, buttons hidden by a piece of material that reminded him of a groomsman shirt; despite the fact it was blue.

Almost immediately he dropped the shirt and lifted the trousers; audibly sighing at the sight of black wool blend. Who the hell did Alexandre expect Caden to marry? There was a bloody tie too! Under no circumstances was he wearing this, absolutely not!

Not even an hour later, Caden stood in front of a mirror upstairs. His hands fussed at the collar; attempting to wrap the stupid silver tie around without straggling himself in the process. The trousers felt tight, the seams screaming at him every time he bent down to reach for something. The fit of the shirt was snug, tight around the arms but he looked ever much the gentleman with it tucked into the trouser waist band. Was the festival actually a wedding?
Growing tired of the tie, Caden stuffed it into his breast pocket, letting it hang out just a little. He looked...Odd? Definitely not a miner. Fingering a necklace in his trouser pocket, he felt the little gemstone that was attached; Would she like it? Camellia had been awful upset last time he saw her: A spider had landed on her favourite lamp and, during a fit of panic, she had picked up a frying pan and smashed the lamp to smithereens. While the necklace was no lamp; perhaps it would return the smile to her face.
-

His time spent at the festival so far had been miserable; nobody else looked as formal as he and his only thought was to throttle Alexandre when he saw him. Surely he thought that this would be such a fantastic jest; the ever so stoic Caden dressed to the nines. All he was missing was suspenders and a bowl hat- Then heโ€™d really look the part. A growl released from his throat as a reveller walked past, snickering in his direction. โ€œWhy you...โ€ He mumbled, pushing the sleeve of the shirt up as far it would goโ€” Just beneath the crook of his arm.

He was about to move forward, confront with calm words, when the shrill voice of the lady he was searching for rang out. Suddenly he felt the need to sleep; Yes, sleep would be good. Cadens eyes darted back and forth, attempting to identify a hiding place but before he could even take a breath; the swish of sunkissed red hair entered his vision; the red was always the shade of the devil, exactly who she was: A little devil.

โ€œCamellia.โ€ Caden greeted, his fingers rolling the gemstone around in his pocket. Did he give it to her now? Surely not, she looked as if she had the whole world on her shoulders.

As always she spoke like a mad woman; words slipping out without a breath between them, her pause only given when her lips pushed over the straw to her coke; something that his eyes focused on purely for the dryness at his own throat from listening to her speak. The girl could work on telecommunications, the amount of customers sheโ€™d get through in a day would be unfathomable.

โ€œThanks,โ€ he managed to get out at the compliment, not sure if she meant it or was purely fishing for something. Before he could compliment her back, out of politeness, she shot back into the conversation. Finally, when she got to the point of the conversation, Cadenโ€™s arm dashed forward and his hand plucked the cola from her own hand and he pulled the straw from itโ€™s secure hole.

โ€œShoot.โ€ He answered, flicking the straw at her forehead before tipping the remainder of the contents back into his mouth; guzzling it down to quench his thirst.

โ€œAh!โ€ He released, rubbing his mouth with the back of his hand. The necklace would have to wait it seemed; Camellia had other plans on her mind.

He could already imagine what she wanted; food was his first go to; the girl loved to eat. Perhaps she wanted to him to escort her through the stalls so she wouldnโ€™t be lonely? How could he turn her down.

Macy was trying to get and many people as she could to try the alcohol, plus the little snacks would often help guide them over to her. Macy did not like to cook or anything like that, but oddly enough she was pretty good at it. She was surprised when Ivy walked up, but she quickly gave her a smile before introducing the girl to what was available. "Well, for drinks.... We have this lovely wine, it is a strawberry wine.... Something new that the boss was trying, I have to admit it actually tastes rather good!" she blinked her eyes for a moment, figuring out that she just went on for about 10 minutes about the wine. "The hops are just regular ones for the beer, but it was a good harvest and it tastes amazing! I highly recommend it...."

She shifted around a little bit, bringing the other tray down from where she was holding it up high and almost having to remember what was on this tray. "This is some snacks that are made! there are some chips, with homemade salsa and just little bar foods, show everybody what the pub is made of!" she seemed really happy about it, as she let out a giggle before staring at Ivy in that moment. "Would you like some? They're free today!"

Marina didn't quite expect Emmie to be so talkative. It wasn't unwelcome, just unexpected. She stood as Emmie told her about all the activities and goings-on at the library, the same serene smile on her face as she took it in. It all sounded so nice!

She took the pamphlets and no sooner had she tucked them into her purse was she offered the business card, which she also accepted. "Thank you," she said, her smile growing a bit wider. "I appreciate all the work the library does for the students. I try to bring them over twice monthly to encourage more reading, but... it's difficult for some of them, you know. They like the activities a lot." Marina glanced at the business card. "Thank you, Ms. Aster. Happy New Year to you, too."

Now... what else to look at? Marina wasn't sure. She could hear all kinds of commotion nearby, but she really just kind of wanted a snack or something. Festivals made her hungry every single time she went to one and she ended up eating every free sample of food she was offered. It was a little ridiculous.

... maybe she would end up running into one of her friends and just hover behind them while they figured out what to do. Everyone else had some kind of job to do today except for Marina, since the school was pretty self-explanatory and she didn't need to do any sort of recruiting or anything.

Marina let out a tiny sigh, making her way through the festival in hopes of catching any familiar eyes.

Ryan worked very long nights and sometimes into the day, he didnโ€™t always know what day it was or what time it was. He was always working on making sure that they had the medications they needed for the town, as well as making sure to see if he could discover new medications to make their lives easier. One thing he seemed to need, was something to make him with the ability to stay up all the time. He wasnโ€™t even close to something like that, but he was definitely working on some kind of pill.

On this particular day, he had forgotten again what the day was and he often would fall asleep on the benches throughout the village. This day was no exception, he had fallen asleep in the middle of the town square where there was going to be the festival and of course he forgot about the festival. He laid there, falling fast asleep and would stay asleep for a couple hours at least. That was until he was awoken by the sound of people celebrating, walking right past him and some of them didnโ€™t even know him would often just stare at him.

Ryan let out a yawn as he quickly set up on the bench, there was a book on his chest that had to do with pharmaceuticals. He looked around quietly, he was not a loud man at all and in fact quite opposite because he would sometimes talk in a very soft voice. This pleasant to say that he didnโ€™t have passions, on occasions they would even come out and those times were pretty interesting. He often liked the company of men, although he wouldnโ€™t be opposed to a female wanting to spend some time with him. The truth was he didnโ€™t often know what to say to women, except for those who were his friends and knew him.

Ryan finally began to look around the area, everybody seemed to be already having a good time as he quickly tucked his hand into his pocket, while the other one carried the book he had been reading. He wore a lab coat, something that he wore all the time and this time he probably would have changed, but the festival was already underway and he felt it disrespectful to just leave. Occasionally he would waive people, mostly if he knew them and even worked up a little smile some of them.

Steve had been increasingly busy with all the paperwork he had to do; he had every intention of going to the festival because he had to. Not only because it was his job to make announcements and things like that at the festival, but also because grace would have been sad if he didnโ€™t go. He was not the best with children, but there was something about that little girl that made him want to be a better person. He was always going to be arrogant and self-assured, but he toned it down just a little bit thanks to grace. It was also thanks to the schoolteacher, for the first time he was experiencing some extraordinarily strong emotions for someone other than himself.

โ€œUncle Steve! Come on! I want to go; all my friends are going to be there already!โ€ Grace shouted as she was already at the door, she was ready in a cute little sundress and a straw hat. She looked adorable, so Steve quickly put down the paperwork and got up from his desk. He sure hoped he was making the right decisions; he did not want to let anybody in the town down. Then again, he had to make what he thought were the best decisions and the person he would go to help him a little bit from him was the police officer.

Finally, they were walking to the town square, which was just outside pretty much is office and they were there. Grace was so excited; she was running all over the place and that was rather exhausting for Steve. He bit his lip a little bit when he saw the beautiful Marina, man she made his heart skip a beat and he always wanted to be near her. Of course, he would never be creepy about it, he quickly grabbed Grace by the shoulders and gave her a look. โ€œOkay! Iโ€™ll go greet my teacher!โ€ This was the way he was able to talk to her, the only way he felt he could talk to her without sounding like he was creepy.

โ€œGood morning, Miss Marina! Youโ€™ll be happy to know, I got my homework done for tomorrow!โ€ She smiled brightly, she gave the woman a small curtsy and Steve was just staring at her for a moment. Finally, he casually began to look around, rubbing the back of his neck as he could not help but grin. In that moment, Grace ran off and he shrugged it off knowing full well that she was pretty safe in the festival and then he went back to focusing on Marina.

Tobias

The raccoon had made a mess again. While from the town square Tobias could hear the sounds of people celebrating the New Year, he was on his hands and knee's picking up soggy pizza boxes and the usual trash that comes from running an inn. Tobias wanted to be out with everybody else, but he had a job to do. With a sigh he picked up the remains of what once may have been a banana and tossed it back into the rusting dumpster.

Today the new cook, Davie, was supposed to be arriving. Tobias eagerly awaited his arrival, hoping to go over what was on the menu for tonight's celebrations. Wiping his hands on his jeans, Tobias made his way back inside the inn and picked up the banner that lay folded up on top of the pub's bar. Banner in hand, Tobias went out to the front of the inn where he could see the festivities for himself. He could see his waitress, Macy, handing out free drinks to advertise the pub and smiled. If she looked his way, Tobias would be sure to give her a thumbs up. Dragging a ladder from the side of the building, Tobias began hanging the banner over the entrance to his establishment. He had made the banner himself, and was quite proud of it. It read "Happy New Year!", and in smaller print on the bottom was the times for tonight's celebrations. Tobias had wanted to hold a nice dinner for the town, to kick off the New Year on a good note. Hopefully, thing's would go off without a hitch. He could only hope...

Turns out it still only took a few minutes to cross downtown Maple Tree since Davie already found himself nearing the inn. The blue haired individual hanging a charmingly to the point banner over the entrance did not go unnoticed, rather it was a source of fun interest that temporarily distracted Davie from his search in the sea of faces. He made the safe assumption that the banner lord was one of his new coworkers. Server or bartender perhaps? Whatever the case they are apparently a somewhat handy one considering the situation. Or they just drew the short straw, but Davie wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt since they were going to be working together.

Coming close enough to read the bannerโ€™s fine print, Davie experienced a moment of incredibly excited panic. A town celebration, that uh, that wasnโ€™t ringing any bells. It sounded really fun but, and this was a pretty important but, was he supposed to bring something? Like some special dish or grand creation from a mountain monk. Does anybody do that? Maybe! Oh gosh this could be embarrassing. Then again, itโ€™s the perfect time and place to surpriseโ€ฆwho actually still lives in Maple Tree?

Davie sucked in air at that question.

โ€œDefinitely should have asked somebody.โ€ He oddly didnโ€™t seem very fazed to potentially a ruined reunion which was all thanks to his mostly sometimes trustworthy gut feeling that everything would work itself out. Maybe the lord of ladders can help out with info along with the celebration that may or may not be ruined without the temple offering. Stopping at the ladder Davie tilted his head back, placing one hand on his hat and another on Daisy to keep both from falling off before calling out, โ€œHowdy friendo! Mind telling me where I can find the inn boss?โ€

Emmie had made Marina uncomfortable, she was sure of it. Her sales pitch for the library was too long. Mentally Emmie slammed her palm against her forehead. This was her first full time job, she couldn't screw it up. Although this wasn't what she had been hoping to do with her life, she refused to accept anything that was sub-par. Emmie's mother kept warning her that her sense of perfectionism would be the death of her, but how can you change something about yourself you cant physically touch or see?

"It was a pleasure to meet you." Emmie said to Marina as the teacher began to divert her attention towards the festivities other attractions. Emmie could hear a young woman calling out about free samples of alcohol from somewhere. Oh, how a nice a glass of good wine would be right now. Later, she told herself. For now she had a job to do.

โ€œGood morning, Miss Marina! Youโ€™ll be happy to know, I got my homework done for tomorrow!โ€

A young, cheerful, girl appeared suddenly before Emmie's booth. She was speaking to Marina, and a young, very handsome, man followed behind her. The girl was adorable, Emmie had to admit. Her little curtsy before running off was quite the endearing touch. The man didn't run after the child, instead focusing his attention on Marina. Emmie wasn't sure if she should greet the man, he seemed far more interested in something besides her booth. Emmie chose to stand there quietly, posture straight, hands folded in front of her, in case the man or any other Mapletree resident came up to her booth.

Tobias

Tobias hammered in the last nail holding up his banner and leaned his head back to admire his work. Slightly crooked, but it would do. The tilt added charm he decided.

โ€œHowdy friendo! Mind telling me where I can find the inn boss?โ€

Tobias looked down to see an eccentric looking young man with a dog draped around his shoulders. Wait...a dog? How the? Tobias squinted his eyes to make sure he was seeing things correctly. By some miracle, the dog was completely at ease where it sat. Must have been trained by Max, Tobias decided upon. "That would be me actually." Tobias climbed down the ladder and set his feet on solid ground once again. He held out his hand to the young man. "My name is Tobias. Are you looking to rent a room?"

Tobias took the opportunity to get a closer look at the dog. Yep, that was a real dog draped around his shoulders. "If you don't mind my asking...How did you get them to do that?" Tobias nodded his head toward the dog

location: the festival (still!)
Almost immediately after turning from Emmie's booth, Marina saw Grace running at her. Well, actually, she heard her before she saw her, which was typical. She smiled down at the young girl as she curtsied, her eyes crinkling at the corners in happiness. She looked so cute! Grace always looked cute, though. "Good morning, Grace! I'm so proud of you. I can't wait to see you at school tomorrow!" Marina watched Grace charge off, sure she was off to find a buddy to see or an animal (or seven) to befriend. Grace was just like that. Once Grace was out of her sights, she turned and locked eyes with Steve.

Be cool, Marina. Yes, Steve was gorgeous. Pretty much anyone with working eyes and even a slight interest in men knew and acknowledged that fact. Yes, she did absolutely turn into a blushing mess the second he left, she always did around handsome people, but she was a professional! Besides, she was sure he would never be interested in her. He was just nice because she was a teacher.

"Good morning, Mayor. How are you?" Marina raised her normally-soft voice, just a little so she could be heard better. She fiddled with her purse strap, clamping her fingers down around it so she'd stop messing with it.

Alexandre woke up rather tired, as the storm had kept the house shaking throughout most of the night. Thankfully, last night before going to bed he'd prepared all of his displays in advance for the festival today. Many things were going to be exposed: necklaces, bracelets, gold, silver, rose gold, lots of semi precious stones (much thanks to Caden), a few blades, tools and raw ores. Caden often helped him work on crafting many of the pieces of jewelry, including the ones that were going to be shown, and some fine work it was. For someone so gruff looking, Caden actually had a fine hand as well as a strong one!

They made an excellent duo of relentless perfectionists of sorts; although certainly Alexandre knew better when to take a break, but Caden? Not so much. Alex took it upon himself to help his partner and friend in his endeavours, whether it be a coffee, a pair of slippers or a clean shirt, fixing his pickaxes, or whatever he could need. And always free of charge. The blacksmith couldn't help but admire his friend's perseverance for his craft. In Alex's mind, that deserved to be rewarded - and it certainly made his life easier in terms of running the shop in many ways. He let out a sort of satisfied sigh as he took a moment to reminisce on the last year and what he had to be thankful for. What was he thankful for?

Surely the yearly profits, they had been impressively high. Alex and Caden nearly never ran out of work, and always managed to pummel through big jobs day and/or night to meet deadlines. Something to be proud of, indeed. It's very honourable to make fine, reliable work.

His house, becoming cozier as seasons (and renovations) pass, and his neatly organized shop. Being a blacksmith doesn't necessarily have to mean messy...!

Speaking of renovations: they had been going well, but the main goal was yet to be attained: his grand garden. The project had been running through Alexandre's mind for years now, and slowly but surely he managed to work on landscaping the back of his house into what he hoped would become one of the biggest patches of flowers in all of Mapletree...! Butterflies would come swarming in then! A backyard observatory, essentially, with all the time in the world to marvel at these delicate and fascinating lifeforms. Alex hoped that this year would be the one where he could open his back door and be graced with a marvel of sights and smells right off the deck of his balcony.

Oops, what time is it?

Alex checked the small alarm clock on his nightstand: 8:25! The stand needs to be ready in less than 30 minutes...! It's useless; even though his focus is generally excellent, he can't help but get lost in his mind when he starts envisioning his dearest project. He hopped into the suit he had laid out the night before - a navy blue vest over a soft blue button up shirt, matching navy dress pants, and a shiny pair of black shoes - and so he rushed out of the house, jam packed suitcases in tow, three swords on his back, trying to fix one particularly rebellious strand of hair flipping upwards as he made his way towards the town square. He panted in frustration as he walked, rather upset that he didn't have the time to clean up more nicely, since even though appearances are not everything, they are surely something, and Alexandre always favoured looking put together over, well, not. He rapidly set up his booth and wiped a tiny drop of sweat from his forehead. He took a seat behind his setup and drank some leftover water from his bottle, looking around to see many of the villagers mingling, sampling, and chatting.

Then, some sort of squeaky voice - oh Goddess no - that squeaky voice. Alexandre quickly noticed Caden and Camellia interacting a little further away, and immediately turned in his seat so as to face away from them.

Mathias got up bright and early to suit up and look as dashing as possible to step out for today's festivities. Throwing his long red hair back into a neat ponytail, he slips into a pure white, slightly bouffant type of shirt. Some people would worry about staining such a gorgeous piece with, Goddess forbid, a drop of wine. But anyone who knows anything about Mathias knows that he never spills a single drop, regardless of how drunk he may get. He adjusted a slick black leather belt over a pair of neat, black jeans and tied up his favourite pair of horseriding boots (from one of his promotional trips abroad). He would need the help of his steed, Starlight, to haul three of the six crates of wine requested by the town council. The other half could wait until noon, at the very least. The young man took care not to fatigue the beast in any way.

Starlight, trained alongside Mathias since he was a child, was a gorgeous black horse covered in white speckles across its coat, with a long, white, carefully braided mane. Obedient to a fault and very calm around humans. Folks have found it strange to see a young, rich man such as Mathias using horseback as a means of transportation when he could easily own an expensive car "like a Mustang, for instance." His response? "I do own one, but the original kind." What's the fun in a car out in the country like this, anyway? Nature's meant to be softly walked on, not rolled over on tarmac roads. Blech!

It was still rather cool outside in spite of the bright morning sun shining over the village. Mathias threw a scarf over his shoulders before packing up his stock, making his way towards the town square to attend his favourite festival of all year: New Year's! What's there not to love about it? All the food, drinks, dances, girls... Everyone is so merry! Deep down, Mathias wished every day was New Year's, but besides him, who could possibly keep up? He smiled to himself as he wondered.

Then, as he arrived at the edge of the square, he could hear a slow crescendo of chatter, laughs, and clinking glasses. He chimed in near a crowd of folks unknown to him: "It's 5'o'clock somewhere, huh?" he said, smirking as he hopped off his horse. The tiny gang burst out laughing, nodding and bringing their glasses up to cheer together.

Mathias laughed with them for a minute and pushed back a strand of hair that fell forward when he got off the horse. He brought out the crates and deposited them at key locations for different stations to fill or refill drinks. The crates looked heavy, but the young businessman wasn't bothered much by this. He often helped out wherever he was needed at the vineyard, and sometimes, hah - who are we kidding - most days, that meant carrying crates back and forth to help out the guys in shipping. Mathias didn't mind though; all the lifting only added to his already fit physique, much to his satisfaction.

As he turned around, he noticed a familiar silhouette. A pleasant one, at that. Lovely, even. It was Macy, the new waitress from the pub. They hadn't talked much outside of the usual chitchat whenever he'd drop by to bring some of his wine, but today he was feeling pretty confident. He strutted over somewhat nonchalantly, carrying himself gracefully regardless, headed towards Macy. He stopped for a moment to listen to her gushing over this strawberry wine she was serving: it did sound delicious, and it would be sampled. At least twice.

"I love a woman who knows her alcohol," he said as he grabbed a glass off of Macy's platter. "Strawberry is such a fantastic fruit to turn into wine, it makes any event extra... Special." He flashed a smile. "Had we officially been introduced? I am Mathias De Verger, owner and producer of De Verger Organic Winery. You're... Macy, correct?" He feigned, remembering perfectly well the moment they met. Such vibrant eyes are not easily forgotten...!
