Metro 2033 Timeline

Pre-2013

1. Several nations desired control over the Middle East's oil. Hence, a cold war established itself during this era between these nations. One such nation included Russia, who sought the oils as a means to amplify their technologies' fuel consumption. This greed led to a deployment of Russian arms and ideologies in the Middle East to support a proxy war.

2013

1. Heated tensions rise in the Middle East, and the war goes nuclear resulting in World War Three between several nations. Nuclear bombs are dropped on Moscow and other prominent Russian cities. As a result, the surface of Russia is heavily irradiated and cannot support normal human life.

2. The surviving humans escape to the Metro tunnels under the Central Metro Command. The Central Metro Command is controlled by Russian government officials and individuals who worked on the Metro tunnels.

3. Supernatural phenomenon began to sprout up on the surface and in the tunnels. They include Ghosts, Anomalies, and many other strange entities.

4. Animals mutated by high levels of radiation appear.

2014

1. The first stalkers equipped with gas masks survey the surface of Moscow. Stalkers are individuals who brave the surface in search of old world supplies and knowledge.

2. Metro-made weapons, trams, and other technologies are developed using the limited resources.

2015

1. The Central Metro Command falls apart due to differing ideologies within the populace. Therefore, several stations split off and form their own communities.

2. The Polis faction is created around preserving old-world knowledge and protecting humanity's aspirations.

3. The Bandit faction is established around causing anarchy under the motto: "The strongest survive." They take part in crimes that most of the Metro would consider immoral.

4. Watchtower faction is made by Jehovah's Witnesses and believe the survivors of World War Three were chosen by God to ascend to heaven in the Metro.

5. Hansa faction is created by several stations seeking to trade with one another in a succinct, profitable route. They are democratic in nature and believe in free markets.

6. The Arbat Federation is made under non-Russians and Caucasians focused on a capitalistic autocracy. They have a high population of Stalkers too.

7. The 1905 confederation is created according to left-winged principles.

2016

1. The rangers of the orders are developed under the Polis faction to protect against Mutants and Bandits.

2. Red Line, a communistic faction focused on conquering the entirety of the Metro and creating a communist utopia where all live equally, is created.

3. The Savage Cannibals of the Great Worm Cult are made, where they focus on feeding sacrifices to a Great Worm underground. They are cannibals, xenophobic, and techno phobic.

4. Satanists cult is made which believes the underground is the gateway to hell and the apocalypse has occurred for them to meet Satan.

5. The Baumansky Alliance develops to focus on repairing pre-war machinery and trade.

6. Belorusskaya Trade Outposts is a collection of trading stations that focus on food production. They are completely neutral.

2021

1. The mutant threat goes out of control causing some tunnels and stations to collapse.

2. The Hansa-Red Line war occurs over territory disputes. Hansa prevails and obtains stations to form the Ring Line, the best economic route to trade in the Metro.

3. Kuznetsky Most (Armory) is established as a means to provide ammunition and weapons to the Red-Line and the rest of the Metro.

2028

1. A tunnel collapse prevents travel and causes a strange fog to appear in the Metro.

2. Strange disappearances occur in some stations.

2033

Weapons/Equipment list
by adrian_ adrian_
The metro is a cruel place. Anyone and anything will kill you, and no one will find your corpse. In an attempt to stop aggressors almost every station manufactures weaponry and ammo, and those that don't surely ship them in. A large amount of people own atleast a Lolife, but an even larger amount don't know how to use it.
Don't be the latter.

Weapons are organized in their respective classes, with tiers to recognize their effectiveness in a common firefight in the metro. A tier five represents a subpar, almost useless weapon. A tier one is old world, military grade. The best of the best.

Handguns
----------------------------------

Lolife [4]

The Lolife was created by bandits, it requires minimal resources to create, and it is stronger than a zipgun by far, the Lolife is usually chambered in 9mm Makarov and is the Reich's common choice of issued sidearm, it's know for it's 'more annoying than angry' sound and it's modular frame. In the Metro there is no 'real' correct way of creating a Lolife, and it is used as a general term for the Reich issued version.

Revolver [3]

The revolver is known by many names in the metro, but most of all, it is know by it's stomach-lurching bang. The revolver is an age-old weapon, a metal frame and striker connected to a trigger and cylinder that is manually loaded. There are many variations, but one stays, the cylinder. The cylinder allows a revolver to carry much more powerful ammunition than a magazine fed Lolife or Ashot. Most in the metro carry handmade 44. Caliber rounds, but some carry 357. or 38. Caliber. If you run into a bandit with one, they are most likely skilled with it. Take caution.

Ashot [5]

Towards the end of the government's rule mutants really took a liking to the metro, raids became more common and stations were overrun. The Ashot was a direct counter to that, originally just a pipe and striker carrying a singular shell. The Ashot cleans up mutants in extremely tight service tunnels, however, past that it's practically useless. It does minimal damage from above four meters and only carries one shot to work with.

Submachine Guns
----------------------------------

Bastard Gun [4]

The Bastard gun, also known as Bezpolesuka, is the most common automatic weapon in the metro. It is a horizontally loading submachine gun known for it's tendency to overheat and jam, it chambers in 9mm Makarov and although it is extremely unreliable, it can put down a lot of fire in a small amount of time.

Lolife-Auto [2]

The Lolife-Auto is an automatic version of the pistol, it empties it's magazine extremely quickly, but is a solid choice in the metro.

AKS-74U [1]

The AKS-74U is a pre-war weapon, it's a shortened AK-74 which fires the same round, it's accuracy is mediocre, however it offers a high stopping power and fire rate, giving it the edge over other submachine guns.

VSK-94 [2]

The VSK-94 is the Red Line's favored weapon for their plentiful surface units, it is an extremely accurate weapon that, when used at medium range, offers a powerful alternative to those who don't like the 'run and gun' style of the other Submachine guns and instead want a surgical, efficient weapon. It chambers in 7.62.

Assault Rifles
----------------------------------

AK-74M [3]

The AK-74M, or Kalash as it's known, is the second most common automatic weapon in the metro, it is the main weapon of every stable fighting force. The AK-74M is a workhorse through and through, it can wade in a lake for a week and still do it's job, it offers reliable stopping power, accuracy, and magazine size and all the while can be made fairly easily. If they've got the bullets for it, every stalker will carry one.

Kalash 2012 [1]

Created and issued a year before the Great War, the 2012 is one of the best, if not the best Assault Rifles that can legally be acquired through trade. It boasts extremely large magazine capacity, at 50 rounds, and it's a bullpup, so it also has great accuracy.

RPK-74 [1]

The RPK-74 is a Squad Automatic Weapon version of the baseline AK-74. This classic pre-war machine gun has a great range and is very accurate, while at the same time being able to handle long bursts.

Shotguns
----------------------------------

Abzats [2]

The Heavy Automatic Shotgun, or Abzats, is a makeshift firearm and a fearsome addition to anyone's arsenal. It is derived from a cut-down DShK 12.7mm Machine gun, re-chambered and re-bored for shotgun shells, and completely redesigned to be wielded by one user. It overheats often, and only carries twenty shells, but it is a powerful and terrifying weapon.

Duplet [3]

The Duplet is a scratch-built double-barreled shotgun built in the metro. It has two barrels with one shotgun shell in each. While this system has considerable drawbacks, including a very limited ammo capacity, the Duplet is capable of causing more concentrated damage at close range than any other shotgun and remains a powerful and respectable weapon because of this.

Uboinik [4]

The Uboinik is an automatic revolving shotgun that was created from scrap by the metro dwellers at some point after the Great War. It fairs well in the metro, where tight corners and slim hallways require weapons that can clear areas well. It holds six shells and needs to be manually reloaded by hand, but it can put up a good fight.

Bicycle Gun [5]

The Bigun is a six-round semi-automatic shotgun, made entirely from old bicycle parts, hence its name. It fires quickly for being semi-automatic and can blow up in your hands, the loading is done by hand, through holes a little to small for fingers but perfect for shotgun shells, but it can empty on a group of mutants with havoc.

Saiga-12 [2]

The Saiga-12 is a magazine-fed pre-war automatic shotgun that can be found, extensively on Red Line and Reich forces, it is considered overkill in most situations, however it does it's job with zeal, clearing rooms in seconds. If you are looking to supply an army, look no further.

Rifles
----------------------------------

Valve [3]

The Valve is a makeshift sniper rifle, created from older pre-war rifles by Metro dwellers. It uses a simple pull-bolt and fires 7.62x54R ammunition. It has very high accuracy and is known for the extremely loud sound it makes.

Clapper [1]

The VSSK Vychlop is a semi-automatic, magazine-fed bullpup sniper rifle which uses 12.7x55mm rounds in a five round box magazine. It was developed in 2002 for the special forces units of FSB. It is meant for special operation missions which it is highly effective against combatants in heavy-body armor. At closer range, it can be used as an anti-material weapon.

Preved [2]

The Preved is able to penetrate most forms of cover, retaining more than enough power to kill the enemy behind. It can also drop enemies in heavy armor with a single hit. Its extreme stopping power is useful in taking down large tough mutants such as Demons, though its extremely slow rate of fire means you will have to be accurate.

Hellbreath [1]

The Hellbreath is a metro-made, man-portable electromagnetic accelerator which uses the Lorentz effect to fire metal projectiles at extremely high velocities - in the real world, it would be a kind of railgun. It has stopping power that rivals the Preved, and only requires an electrical charge and ball bearing to fire.

Pneumatic Weapons
----------------------------------

Tihar [4]

The Tihar is a multi-stroke pneumatic air gun that was created from scrap by the Metro dwellers at some point after the Great War of 2013. The Tihar has a wide variety of uses and is quite effective from the moment it's picked up. It's biggest drawback, however is it's pneumatic system, it requires constant pumping, and because of this the Tihar is a niche weapon, doing low amounts of damage in firefights but making game-changing strides in stealth.

Helsing [4]

Silent, powerful, and with ammunition that is near infinitely reusable, the Helsing seems like the ideal weapon for stealth, it works very much in the same way the Tihar does, so the guns are frequently compared to one another, as both are stealth weapons with an emphasis on marksmanship. However the Helsing uses bolts, which have a much more consistent stopping power than the Tihar, however, if a bolt breaks, they can be expensive. This, the same as the Tihar, is also a niche weapon.

Player-created Weapons
----------------------------------

N/A as of yet.

The Hansa
----------------------------------

Upon formation and acquiring a decent foothold in the metro, Hansa quickly developed to be the economic powerhouse of the metro, a hyper-capitalist utopia for the rich. It is one of the few places in the metro where public transportation, running water and large-scale electric lighting are widespread. They usually make "partnerships" with the stations outside of the Ring, causing them to become resource stations dependent on Hansa, like the Arbat Confederation and Belorusskaya Trade Outpost. Although not dependent on Hansa for resources, both the Reich and the Red Line maintain trade relationships.

Polis/The Spartan Order
----------------------------------

Throughout the Metro, Polis is known as a station with wealth and power. The platforms which encompass Polis seem to have been taken up with various machinery, with near building-like structures taking the place of housing. In the novel, there is a hierarchy consisting of the Shudra, who are the servants, the Vashiya, a group of dedicated Polis merchants, Kshatriya, the former Russian Army, special forces, and Government agents who make up the defense force, and finally Brahmins, who are the pre-war scientists, teachers, and other important keepers of knowledge.

The Fourth Reich
----------------------------------

A fascist faction inspired by the ideas and policies of Adolf Hitler and his Third Reich. Led by the Führerand formed around a core of neo-Nazis and pre-war xenophobes, the Reich strives to build a new order, envisioning a Metro free of mutants and non-Russians. To this end, they employ special instruments and techniques to ensure that genetic "standards" are upheld by all inhabitants of and travelers to the Reich. Their home station is the triple station of Tverskaya-Chekhovskaya-Pushkinskaya, though they occupy many other stations and bases on the surface.

The Red Line
----------------------------------

A Marxist-Leninist and neo-Stalinist faction, the Red Line is the haven of Soviet nostalgists and aging former members of the CPSU and Komsomol. Led by General Secretary Maxim Moskvin, the Communist Party maintains control much as in Stalin's time - through a program of censorship, political and social repression, and webs of spies and informants. The Reds occupy most of the Sokolnicheskaya Line, minus the two stations of the Ring, and possess the largest population and greatest territory in the Metro. Much like the Soviet Army of the Second World War, the Red Line relies on a massive, but poorly trained and equipped, conscript army.

The Arbat Confederation
----------------------------------

Occupying the three-pronged Kievskaya radial, the Confederation is distinguished by its ethnic diversity and hypercapitalist economic system, dominated by an unusually high number of stalkers. Formerly a powerful faction, Arbat was an ally of Hanza in the Hansa - Red Line War but was severely weakened by the war and forced permanently into Hanza's sphere of orbit.

The 1905 Confederation
----------------------------------

The 1905 Confederation was originally a capitalist society much like the Arbat, however eventually they were raided by mutants. Then the entire surviving population seemed to disappear, the station is considered hallowed ground, and many a scary story takes place there. The scariest by far, however, is the true story. The Hansa search party that was sent out to investigate only found a thick coating of blood along the walls, ceiling, and floor. The entire station's population worth of blood had to have been emptied to create as much as was found, and the people of the Metro still wonder what could have happened to the 1905 Confederation.

The Baumansky Alliance
----------------------------------

Occupying the stations of Baumanskaya, Elektrozavodskaya and Semyonovskaya, Baumansky is known throughout the subway for repairing pre-war machinery and selling it around the Metro.

Kuznetsky Most (Armory)
----------------------------------

Occupying Kuznetsky Most, Armory is renowned for the production of weapons and munitions, supplying the Red Line and the Greater Metro with huge numbers of pre-war and improvised arms and ammunition. Its strategic importance to the Red Line has led to the station's integrity being gradually undermined, as communist agents and informants have infiltrated all levels of the station's society and government. Armory's independence is now little more than nominal.

Belorusskaya Trade Outposts
----------------------------------

A collection of trading stations including Sokol, Aeroport, Dinamo and Belorusskaya. Belorusskaya is a leading producer of food in the Metro, particularly livestock. They maintain near total neutrality, even going so far as to buy slaves from the Reich. In the present time, Belorusskaya has suffered from a spate of unexplained kidnappings.

The Great Worm Cult
----------------------------------

A technophobic, xenophobic primitive faction, residing in Park Pobedy, the Great Worm Cult have descended into a state of primeaval living. They worship an entity known as the 'Great Worm', the being that created the entire world, and frequently cannibalise those who use technology. Their leader is actually an old man who hated how technology destroyed the world. The Great Worm Cult's primary enemies are the Arbat Confederation, whose children they frequently steal.

The Satanists
----------------------------------

A myth amongst the Metro, the Satanists are said to occupy the stations from Dubrovka to Lyublino. Driven mad by the apocalypse, the Satanists kidnap Metro dwellers and force them to dig a huge hole in Lyublino station, which they believe is the portal to Hell itself. Given that there is only one known witness of this, whether or not the Satanists truly exist is questionable.

The Revolutionaries
----------------------------------

A military branch of the Red Line, though not directly affiliated anymore, the Revolutionaries travel the Metro attacking Reich territory and patrols, supplied by the Red Line. Following the ideals of Trotsky and Che Guevara, they save Artyom from certain death from a Reich noose.

The Jehovan Watchtower
----------------------------------

The Watchtower are a religious faction occupying the tunnels south of Serpukhhovskaya. Composing mainly of Jehova's Witnesses, their brothers travel the Metro, taking in waifs and strays to indoctrinate into their order.
